2026 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Offense:
The Buccaneers were one of the hottest teams in the NFL to begin the 2025 season. They were 6-2 in their initial eight games, scoring at least 23 points in all but two contests. This was done without Mike Evans and Chris Godwin playing the majority of games during that stretch. Things took a turn for the worse afterward, however, with the Buccaneers prevailing just three times after that. They failed to score more than 20 points in six of the final nine matchups.

The difference between the first and second half of the season was Baker Mayfield’s health. Mayfield suffered an injury to his shoulder at the midway point of the season and was never the same after that, despite the return of Evans and Godwin to the lineup. First-round rookie Emeka Egbuka, who stole the show during the first half of the year, was a non-factor once Mayfield hurt his shoulder. Egbuka is expected to step up as the No. 1 receiver this season in the wake of Evans’ departure, while Godwin plays in the No. 2 role now that he’s fully recovered from the foot injury he sustained in the middle of the 2024 season. The Buccaneers also have Jalen McMillan, third-round rookie Ted Hurst, and tight end Cade Otton to serve as viable threats for Mayfield.

While there are no lingering issues at receiver for a change, there’s some concern about the health of Tampa Bay’s primary running back. Bucky Irving is dealing with his own shoulder issue. He has yet to practice fully, but he at least is being active now, so the injury may not be a factor come September. With Rachaad White gone, newly signed Kenneth Gainwell should play plenty of snaps, especially on passing downs. The Buccaneers also have Sean Tucker, who has performed well in limited action.

Irving and Mayfield will continue to see excellent blocking. The Buccaneers have one of the best left tackles in the NFL, as Tristan Wirfs is only 27 and has many great years ahead of him. Wirfs missed five games in 2025, but doesn’t have any current health issues. His bookend is Luke Goedeke, who made a very smooth transition from guard to right tackle. Goedeke has developed into a very capable right tackle.

Tampa Bay’s interior blocking wasn’t as good, especially because talented guard Cody Mauch played just two games in 2025. Mauch is coming off patellar tendon damage, which could be a detrimental injury, so it’s unclear if he’ll be able to make a full recovery. If Mauch can’t return to full strength, the interior will be weak overall, given that center Graham Barton and guard Ben Bredeson aren’t very good starters. Barton is fine, but Bredeson is a big liability. Fifth-round rookie Billy Schrauth could challenge for the job.

2026 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Defense:
Mike Evans isn’t the only long-time Buccaneer to depart this offseason. While Evans signed with the 49ers, Lavonte David retired. David had been a force in Tampa Bay’s linebacker corps for a long time, and he won’t be very easy to replace.

Given that David was such a key member of the defense, the Buccaneers brought in two new linebackers to potentially replace him. Alex Anzalone was signed away from the Lions, and then a second-round pick was used on Josiah Trotter. Anzalone has been an adequate starter in his career, but he turns 32 in September, so he could regress. Trotter was considered a bit of a reach because he was pegged in the third round.

Another big loss on this side of the ball was Jamel Dean, who signed with the Steelers. Dean had been Tampa Bay’s top cornerback for several years, so his departure will hurt. The Buccaneers drafted Dean’s potential replacement in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft, as Benjamin Morrison will be asked to take on a greater role in 2026 after struggling as a rookie. The other starting outside cornerback is Zyon McCollum, who is coming off a mediocre season. Nickel cornerback Jacob Parrish, chosen in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft, was a pleasant surprise in his initial NFL season.

Tampa Bay’s safeties will have to carry the secondary, and they have the talent to do that. Antoine Winfield Jr. is one of the best safeties in the NFL. His partner at the position is Tykee Smith, a third-round selection from the 2024 NFL Draft. Smith was solid in run support last year, but was just mediocre in coverage.

Given the state of the Buccaneers’ secondary, the pass rush will have to do a better job of rushing the quarterback. This was not a strength last year, as Yaya Diaby was the only player on the team to record more than 4.5 sacks. Diaby is a very talented young edge rusher who should continue to improve. However, the Buccaneers needed lots more help on the edge, so they used their opening-round choice this past April on Rueben Bain. The Miami product posted some huge numbers in college, but there are questions about his length and overall upside.

The best player in Tampa Bay’s front seven will continue to be Vita Vea, a monstrous nose tackle who can stuff the run and rush the passer extremely well. Vea, however, wasn’t as dominant as usual last year. He still performed on a high level, but at 31, there’s reason to believe there is some regression at play. Vea will be flanked by Calijah Kancey and newly signed A’Shawn Robinson. While Robinson has been a mediocre journeyman, Kancey has shown some major potential. No one saw it last year, however, because he played just three games due to a torn pectoral.

2026 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Schedule and Intangibles:
Prior to the 2009 season, the Buccaneers were 68-36 as hosts. However, they’ve maintained one of the worst home-field advantages in the NFL since. They’re 42-69-1 at the New Sombrero dating back to 2009. They were 6-3 and 8-2 in 2020 and 2021, respectively, which includes their Super Bowl win over the Chiefs. They’ve been 14-13 as hosts since 2023 despite making the playoffs two years.

Chase McLaughlin has enjoyed three great seasons in Tampa Bay. He was 32-of-38 last year, impressively drilling 11-of-12 from 50-plus.

The Buccaneers used a fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft on punter Jake Camarda. This was a poor decision, as Camarda was 18th in net punting in his second season. Instead of Camarda, the Buccaneers could have taken Tariq Woolen, who was chosen about a dozen selections later. Camarda isn’t even on the team anymore, as the Buccaneers signed Riley Dixon a couple of offseasons ago. Dixon was just 28th in net punting last year, but did a fine job of pinning the opposition inside the 20.

The Buccaneers have some tough opponents on their schedule like the Ravens, Bengals, Lions, Bears, Rams, and Chargers. There aren’t many easy games outside of the division.

2026 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Analysis: The Buccaneers were 8-9 last year, and yet they face a tougher schedule after having lost Mike Evans, Lavonte David, and Jamel Dean. There’s reason to have a bearish sentiment on the Buccaneers, but the glass half-full approach is to trust that Mayfield will continue to perform like he did prior to his shoulder injury. Mayfield will need to be at his best, given the key losses on defense.

NFL Draft Team Grade: A- Grade

Goals Entering the 2026 NFL Draft: The Buccaneers lost some key free agents like Mike Evans and Jamel Dean, who must be replaced (Evans perhaps in the form of Kenyon Sadiq). Otherwise, the Buccaneers need help defensively, particularly in their front seven. The edge rush must be addressed, while Lavonte David will need to be replaced.

2026 NFL Draft Accomplishments: There was a ton of buzz about the Buccaneers drafting Akheem Mesidor at No. 15 to improve their pass rush. I thought this was too rich for an old Mesidor. Luckily for the Buccaneers, Mesidor’s teammate, Rueben Bain, fell to them. Bain has short arms, but is likely to have a solid career. He was expected to go around No. 9, so the Buccaneers obtained a steal.

The opposite of that was Josiah Trotter in the second frame. Trotter fills a big need in the wake of David’s retirement, but he was chosen a round too early. The same could be said of third-rounder Ted Hurst.

Tampa Bay rebounded with some strong picks on Day 3. Both Keionte Scott and DeMonte Capehart went way later than they should have, and they both will bolster the defense. Another steal was fifth-rounder Billy Schrauth, who will provide a needed upgrade to the interior of the offensive line.

The Buccaneers had a strong draft. They had a couple of mishaps on Day 2, but otherwise came away with a strong group of players who will improve their roster.

NFL Draft Individual Grades:

15. Rueben Bain, DE, Miami – A Grade

What an amazing value. Rueben Bain could have easily gone in the 7-10 range, and no one would have blinked an eye. Bain was dinged for short arms, but he’s a great player and should be able to be productive in the pros. The Buccaneers desperately needed an edge rusher, and they got the best one who’s been on the board since the fifth pick was made.

46. Josiah Trotter, LB, Missouri – D Grade

The Buccaneers had C.J. Allen fall right into their lap, but they took a different linebacker instead. This one is a head-scratcher. Josiah Trotter is a third-round prospect because he has issues in coverage. He’s good in run support, but this is a reach.

84. Ted Hurst, WR, Georgia State – B Grade

I had Ted Hurst going a bit later than this. He’s a tall and lengthy receiver who fills a need, as Tampa Bay needed to find depth at receiver in the wake of Mike Evans’ departure.

116. Keionte Scott, CB, Miami – A- Grade

Cornerback makes sense for the Buccaneers, who needed to address the position even before they lost Jamel Dean. Keionte Scott is very instinctive, but missed a lot of tackles. I had him in the third round, so I don’t think this is a great bargain like others do, but this pick is still a decent value.

155. DeMonte Capehart, DT, Clemson – A Grade

DeMonte Capehart is a massive defensive tackle with upside. I thought Capehart was a Round 3-4 guy, so to get him in the fifth round is a nice move by the Buccaneers.

160. Billy Schrauth, G, Notre Dame – A Grade

Billy Schrauth is great in pas protection, but he has an extensive injury history. The Buccaneers needed to strengthen their interior blocking, so if Schrauth can stay healthy, he could offer an upgrade sooner rather than later.

185. Bauer Sharp, TE, LSU – C Grade

Bauer Sharp is an atheltic tight end, but he’s a project. I didn’t have him in my top 400. I get the idea behind this selection, as the Buccaneers are swinging for the fences, which is fine.
