2026 Houston Texans Offense:
Two years ago, C.J. Stroud broke rookie quarterback records and led the team to the second round of the playoffs versus the Ravens. Houston lost that game, but it appeared as though Stroud would become one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL.

That has not happened. Stroud has not lived up to his potential. In fact, he was so terrible in the loss to the Patriots in the divisional round of the playoffs in January that he was nearly benched in favor of Davis Mills at halftime. Excuses were made for Stroud in 2024 – a poor offensive line, a clueless offensive coordinator – but the issues persisted into 2025. This became especially apparent when Mills replaced an injured Stroud during the season and performed admirably. Stroud will have one more chance to redeem himself, but if he continues to struggle to read defenses and operate the offense, Houston may decide to move on with another quarterback.

The Texans cannot be blamed for Stroud’s continued regression because they spent significant resources on the offensive line this spring. They signed two free agents on the open market and then used their first-round pick on a third blocker. The two free agent additions were Wyatt Teller and Braden Smith. Teller was one of the best guards in the NFL a couple of seasons ago, but isn’t the same player as he once was, perhaps due to age (32 in November). Smith, meanwhile, is a talented right tackle, though he’s endured an extensive injury history. He hasn’t played a full season since 2022. As for the draft pick, Keylan Rutledge was chosen to be the team’s new center. Rutledge is a natural guard, so it remains to be seen how he’ll fare at his new position.

With three new starters on the offensive line, two of the blockers will reprise their roles. Aireontae Ersery, a second-round pick from the 2025 NFL Draft, showed the potential to be a franchise left tackle. Ed Ingram, meanwhile, performed on a high level as the team’s right guard.

Houston’s front office also made sure that Stroud would be paired with a better rushing attack. Joe Mixon failed to play a single game last year because of a foot injury, forcing rookie Woody Marks into the lineup. Marks played well for a mid-round rookie, but wasn’t a potent rushing threat that teams had to respect. David Montgomery will do a much better job of picking up yardage in between the tackles.

Stroud may also get a boost in the receiver corps, though that all depends on Tank Dell’s health. Dell is a dynamic receiver, but suffered a horrendous injury toward the end of the 2024 season. He missed all of 2025, but there’s a chance he’ll be able to return this year. If so, he and All-Pro Nico Collins will form one of the better receiver tandems in the NFL. There’s no guarantee Dell will be fine, however, and if he can’t play again, Stroud will have to lean on a pair of recent second-day picks: Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel. Higgins had some bright moments as a rookie last year, while Noel flashed when Christian Kirk was out of the lineup. Kirk is now gone, which will open some opportunities for Noel. Meanwhile, tight end Dalton Schultz will reprise his role as Stroud’s reliable intermediate target.

2026 Houston Texans Defense:
The Texans have reached the second round of the playoffs in each of Stroud’s three NFL seasons. Given Stroud’s decline since his rookie campaign, it’s evident that the defense has been the primary reason for Houston’s overall success.

Houston’s defense is loaded with great talent at every level. Beginning with the defensive line, the Texans have one of the best pass-rushing tandems in the NFL. Will Anderson is a monstrous pass rusher who recorded 12 sacks last year and was given a record-setting contract, and yet Danielle Hunter logged even more sacks, accumulating 15.

The interior of the defensive line isn’t as strong. Sheldon Rankins is a solid player who can pressure the quarterback and handle the run well. He started next to the mediocre Tommy Togiai last year, so the Texans needed to make a change. They signed Logan Hall away from the Buccaneers and then used an early second-round pick on Kayden McDonald, a player some thought would be chosen in the opening frame.

Houston’s consistent quarterback pressure aids an already-terrific secondary. Derek Stingley Jr. is a shutdown cornerback who’s only 25, so he could continue to improve. Kamari Lassiter, a second-round pick from the 2024 NFL Draft, has developed into one of the top No. 2 corners in the NFL. He’s even younger than Stingley (23), so his potential is through the roof. The “old man” among the corners is Jalen Pitre, who is capable of playing safety and nickel. The 27-year-old is coming off a fantastic season.

The Texans aren’t quite as strong at safety as they are at cornerback, but they’re still in good shape at the position. Calen Bullock was solid in 2025, but with Pitre playing more at nickel, the Texans wanted to add another safety to the mix. They did so by acquiring Reed Blankenship in free agency. Blankenship was a quality safety for the Eagles, so he’ll make Houston’s secondary even stronger.

Rounding out the defense, the Texans have a strong presence at linebacker with Azeez Al-Shaair. Thriving mostly against the run, Al-Shaair will start next to Henry To’oTo’o, a fairly mediocre player. Former Colt linebacker E.J. Speed was added on the open market for depth purposes.

2026 Houston Texans Schedule and Intangibles:
Ka’imi Fairbairn had a great year. He drilled a ridiculous 44 field goals (out of 48), going 9-of-13 from 50-plus.

Punter Tommy Townsend had a mediocre net average of 41.6, placing him 18th in the league. However, he did a great job of pinning the opposition inside the 20.

The Texans have a second-place schedule, but this just means that they have to battle the Bills instead of the Patriots, and the Chargers instead of the Broncos. They have other tough opponents like the Ravens, Bengals, and Eagles, but they also get to beat up on the Browns, Giants, and Steelers.

2026 Houston Texans Analysis: The Texans will continue to be a very competitive team in the NFL because of their elite defense. It’s possible that they’ll qualify for the playoffs and win one postseason game again, but their upside will be capped as long as C.J. Stroud continues his regression. However, if Stroud can buck the trend and revert to rookie-year form, the sky will be the limit for the Texans.

NFL Draft Team Grade: D Grade

Goals Entering the 2026 NFL Draft: The Texans have made some improvements to their offensive line this offseason after a sketchy start. They need to continue to add blockers. Houston otherwise doesn’t have any glaring needs, so it can stand to obtain the best player available.

2026 NFL Draft Accomplishments: Houston addressed the offensive line in the first round, but it certainly didn’t take the best player available. Keylan Rutledge as a second-round prospect, yet the Texans moved up a couple of spots to draft him. This did not make any sense, and neither did squandering a second-round pick on tight end Marlin Klein, who was considered a fourth-round prospect.

It wasn’t all negative for the Texans during the first two days because Kayden McDonald was a steal atop Day 2. However, Houston continued to make horrible selections on the third day. Febechi Nwaiwu was a slight reach, while fourth-rounder Wade Woodaz was someone I didn’t have being drafted. I liked the Kamari Ramsey and Aidan Fisher selections, but there were far too many negatives for Houston.

I recommended that the Texans take the best players available. In far too many instances, however, it felt like they were eager to draft the worst players available.

NFL Draft Individual Grades:

26. Keylan Rutledge, G, Georgia Tech – C- Grade

The Texans moved up for Keylan Rutledge? Why? They easily could have gotten him two picks later because he’s a second-round prospect. Rutledge is a monster in the running game, but pass protection could be an issue, which is not ideal with C.J. Stroud regressing each year. But hey, at least the Texans used draft capital to move up for someone who can help a 29-year-old running back get more yards.

36. Kayden McDonald, DT, Ohio State – A Grade

Kayden McDonald is a first-round prospect who fell to the second frame. This is great value for the Texans, who needed to address the interior of their defensive line. They also smartly leapfrogged the Giants, who had planned on selecting a defensive tackle like McDonald.

59. Marlin Klein, TE, Michigan – C- Grade

We’re seeing tight end reaches in Round 2. Marlin Klein is a reach, as I had him going in the fourth round. He’s a speedy tight end, but was never productive at Michigan. Houston could have waited a bit longer to get him.

106. Febechi Nwaiwu, G, Oklahoma – C Grade

I had Febechi Nwaiwu in the fifth round. He’s not very quick, and he’s not a good run blocker. He is versatile, but the Texans could’ve made a better selection.

123. Wade Woodaz, LB, Clemson – D Grade

I didn’t have Wade Woodaz being drafted. In fact, I didn’t have him as a top-400 prospect. He’s a speedy linebacker, but mostly a special-teamer. The Texans could’ve made this pick two rounds later.

141. Kamari Ramsey, S, USC – A Grade

Kamari Ramsey has excellent coverage skills. I thought he could have gone two rounds earlier than this, so the Texans are getting a great value atop Round 5.

204. Lewis Bond, WR, Boston College – C Grade

Lewis Bond was very productive at Boston College. He’s light, but he’s a good route runner. I didn’t have him being drafted, so I’m not a big fan of this pic

243. Aidan Fisher, LB, Indiana – A- Grade

Aidan Fisher is an instinctive linebacker, but has some limitations for the NFL. Fisher figures to be a quality backup and special teamer in the NFL. He could have gone much earlier than this.
