2026 New England Patriots Offense:
It was predicted in this space last year that Drake Maye would have a Josh Allen-type “big leap” in his second season, but no one could have predicted how colossal his leap was. Maye transformed from an inconsistent rookie who showed flashes amid many mistakes to the MVP runner-up. Maye was incredible in his second year, and the scary thing for the opposition is that he can only get better with more experience and a bolstered supporting cast.
The Patriots needed to give Maye two things. The first was a No. 1 receiver. Maye had good chemistry with Stefon Diggs, but Diggs is on the downside of his career. It was no secret that the Patriots had plans to acquire A.J. Brown, as everyone discovered via New England’s top beat reporter. The trade was made on June 1, with the Patriots dealing a 2028 first-round pick for the stud receiver. Brown has never caught passes from an elite passer like Maye, and given how top receivers tend to produce in Josh McDaniels’ offense, Brown could have his best season ever.
Brown will also make the other skill players better because he’ll be drawing so much attention from the defense. Romeo Doubs, signed over from Green Bay, will be a reliable slot receiver, while Kayshon Boutte and Mack Hollins will continue to make plays downfield. Hunter Henry, meanwhile, may lose touchdowns because of Brown’s presence, but he’ll still be a dependable target over the middle of the field.
The second thing the Patriots had to address was the offensive line. Maye was sacked at least five times in every playoff game. Part of that was on rookie left tackle Will Campbell, but it was clear that Campbell was playing hurt. He was so bothered by his injury that the Seahawks discovered a tell with him, as Campbell’s stance told them if the Patriots were going to run or pass. Campbell was much better when he was healthier earlier in the year. Now armed with better health and more experience, Campbell should be much improved in 2026. However, the Patriots sorely needed a better bookend for Campbell, and they may have gotten one with their first-round pick, Caleb Lomu. It remains to be seen how Lomu will perform, but he’s a promising prospect coming out of Utah.
The interior of New England’s offensive line needed a makeover as well. The Patriots may have gotten a big upgrade by signing Alijah Vera-Tucker. The former Jet is an extremely talented and versatile lineman, but he’s dealt with numerous injuries throughout his career thus far. He’ll be a big upgrade at guard when healthy, and he can play tackle in a pinch if there are multiple injuries at the position. The other guard, Mike Onwenu, was the team’s best offensive lineman last year. As for the final position in the interior, Jared Wilson will move from left guard to center. Wilson struggled at left guard last year, but he was just a third-round rookie. He may be better at center.
The running backs will be pleased to be running behind an enhanced offensive line. Many were expecting TreVeyon Henderson to have a huge rookie campaign, but he never earned the coaches’ trust because of his shoddy pass protection. This was a surprise because Henderson was lauded for his pass-protecting ability coming out of Ohio State. Perhaps that’ll improve, and if it does, he may unseat Rhamondre Stevenson, who was solid last year.
2026 New England Patriots Defense:
While many were shocked by the improvements New England’s offense made last year, everyone likely suspected that the defense would be bolstered. Mike Vrabel had his fingerprints all over the defensive unit, improving the defense so much that it surrendered nearly a touchdown fewer per game. The Patriots allowed 24.5 points per game in 2024, but only 17.9 in 2025.
Aside from Vrabel’s elite coaching, the greatest factor for New England’s defensive improvement was the bolstered pass rush. The Patriots spent nine figures on Milton Williams last offseason, and it paid dividends. Williams was just a rotational player on Philadelphia’s stacked defensive line, but he became the key cog for the Patriots. Williams missed five games in 2025, but was otherwise dominant, especially in the playoffs. He’ll continue to start alongside Christian Barmore and Cory Durden. Barmore is a talented player, but is coming off a down year. Still just 27, Barmore could rebound. Durden filled in well at the end of last year.
Williams wasn’t the only major signing to impact the pass rush. The Patriots also brought in Harold Landry, who thrived under Vrabel in Tennessee. Landry ended up leading the team in sacks with 8.5. Still, New England wanted even more of a pass rush, so the team acquired two new players this offseason. It signed Dre’Mont Jones, a talented and versatile front-seven player, and then spent a second-round pick on Gabe Jacas. These new defenders should be able to further enhance the pass rush.
A bolstered pass rush can only help the cornerbacks, who played well last year. All three starters return, with Christian Gonzalez and Carlton Davis playing on the outside, and Marcus Jones being stationed in the slot. Gonzalez is one of the better corners in the NFL, while Davis performed well after coming over from Detroit. Jones was also solid in addition to being a major threat as a punt returner.
There were changes at safety, but not for the better. Jaylinn Hawkins was excellent last year, but he’s gone after signing with the Ravens. To fill the void, the Patriots signed Kevin Byard, who used to be a terrific player in Tennessee. He’s now 33, however, so his best days are long gone. Byard will start next to 2025 fourth-round pick Craig Woodson, who had a rough beginning to his rookie year, but improved as the season progressed.
At linebacker, the Patriots had some amazing play from Robert Spillane. The former Raider and Steeler was elite in run support and strong in coverage. He’ll start next to Christian Elliss, who was mediocre last year.
2026 New England Patriots Schedule and Intangibles:
The elephant in the room is the scandal involving Mike Vrabel and the top Patriots beat reporter, Dianna Russini. The two were involved in an affair that has prompted many to call for Vrabel’s firing. While it’s unlikely that the Patriots will fire their stellar coach, the scandal could serve as a distraction.
Since 2003, the Patriots are 153-47 at home. The magic vanished following Tom Brady’s departure, but Drake Maye was 8-3 as a host in 2025.
The Patriots have had kicking woes for a couple of years prior to 2025. They decided to use a sixth-round pick on Andy Borregales to provide a solution. It worked, as Borregales was 27-of-32, including a perfect 4-of-4 from 50-plus.
Another sixth-round pick, Bryce Baringer, was obtained in 2023. He was 19th in net punting in 2024 and 23rd in that category last year.
The Patriots had the second-easiest schedule in the NFL last year. Things are more difficult this time. Tough opponents include the Seahawks, Jaguars, Bears, Lions, Chargers, Chiefs, and Bills twice. They still have some easy opponents like the Raiders, Steelers, Jets twice, and Dolphins twice.

2026 New England Patriots Analysis: The Patriots endured poor coaching and inexperience at quarterback in 2024. With Drake Maye improving, and Mike Vrabel joining the team, New England reached the Super Bowl. However, part of the equation was having the easiest schedule in the conference. The Patriots’ road will be more challenging in 2026, and it remains to be seen how much of a distraction the Vrabel scandal will cause. However, the Patriots have also made big improvements to the weak points of their roster, so perhaps they won’t suffer a big decline after all.

Multiple offensive linemen must be acquired to give Maye a better chance next year. Meanwhile, the defense must acquire some help in the secondary, with both cornerback and safety being areas of need.
2026 NFL Draft Accomplishments: The Patriots had a dilemma. They were drafting at No. 31, yet all of the first-round tackles were flying off the board. They had to trade up, and they were lucky enough to find an unusual partner in the Bills, who allowed them to obtain the final opening-round tackle on the board. New England secured Caleb Lomu, who could provide a big upgrade for New England at right tackle.
The Lomu pick earned the Patriots an “A,” as did the second-round choice, Gabe Jacas, who provided great value at No. 55. That’s where the overwhelming positivity ends, however, as none of New England’s seven other draft choices scored better than a “B” grade. This began with the third-round selection, Eli Raridon, who should have gone later because of his checkered injury history. None of the picks made on Day 3 really stood out, but none of them were overly horrible either.
While the Patriots had a mixed bag of draft scores, what helped was that they addressed their weak offensive line twice. They could have spent a third pick on a blocker, as some of the wasted third-day choices could have been used to help Maye’s protection. Still, the Patriots did well overall.

NFL Draft Individual Grades:
28. Caleb Lomu, OT, Utah – A Grade
We’ve seen some sketchy trade-ups, but this was a great one. Caleb Lomu was the final tackle available in the first round, and he easily could have gone to the 49ers or Chiefs. Drake Maye was sacked at least five times in every single playoff game, so New England had to obtain someone like Lomu.
55. Gabe Jacas, DE, Illinois – A Grade
The Patriots have traded up again, and I like that they did so once more. Gabe Jacas could have been chosen early in the second round as a quick and strong defensive end. He’s a good player in run support and the pass rush, so the Patriots are getting a quality upgrade on the edge.
95. Eli Raridon, TE, Notre Dame – C Grade
It’s not a surprise that the Patriots drafted a tight end, with Hunter Henry aging. Eli Raridon is a good route runner with plus athleticism, but carries a very checkered injury history. I thought he would go later than this because of his injuries.
171. Karon Prunty, CB, Wake Forest – B Grade
Karon Prunty is fine for this range for the Patriots, who needed to bolster secondary depth. Prunty is a talented zone corner, but he’s very weak and needs to beef up for the NFL.
196. Dametrious Crownover, OT, Texas A&M – B Grade
Dametrious Crownover has a big body and needs to improve his conditioning. If he can, he could end up competing for a starting job if the Patriots have injuries up front. I had him going in this range, so this is a nice choice for the Patriots, as any sort of quality blocking is welcome.
212. Namdi Obiazor, LB, TCU – C Grade
Namdi Obiazor is an athletic and productive linebacker, but he’s small and may not have much of a role outside of special teams. I didn’t have him being drafted.
234. Behren Morton, QB, Texas Tech – C- Grade
Behren Morton is accurate, but doesn’t see the field well and makes poor decisions. This is not a pick I would have recommended. Why not just go with Garrett Nussmeier?
245. Jam Miller, RB, Alabama – B- Grade
Jam Miller was not impressive last year and appeared to be weighed down by injuries. Maybe he can overcome them and be a decent backup behind TreVeyon Henderson, but that probably won’t happen.
247. Quintayvious Hutchins, DE/OLB, Boston College – C+ Grade
Quintayvious Hutchins is an extremely fast edge rusher with a high motor, but is severely undersized. He might just be too limited to be in the NFL.
