2026 Indianapolis Colts Offense:
The Colts are arguably the most challenging team to evaluate for the 2026 NFL season because of Daniel Jones’ injury status. Jones tore his Achilles late in 2025, so it’s unclear how he’ll perform this upcoming season, or if he’ll even be available for Week 1. The two most recent quarterbacks to undergo torn Achilles rehabilitation are Aaron Rodgers and Kirk Cousins, and both had miserable 2024 campaigns before bouncing back a bit in 2025. However, there are two elements to consider. On one hand, Jones is much younger than Rodgers and Cousins, so perhaps he’ll be able to make a more successful recovery. On the other hand, Jones utilizes his legs much more than Rodgers and Cousins, so his ability to perform on a high level could be compromised.

Indianapolis failed to win without Jones last year, so it’ll be imperative for him to return to action. Not even Jonathan Taylor could save the Colts last year in the wake of Jones’ injury. The Colts leaned on Taylor heavily when Philip Rivers and Riley Leonard were at the helm, but opposing defenses were able to stack the box and prevent Taylor from having too much success. Taylor is still young enough (27) to have another dominant year if he can get some quarterback support.

Jones will have plenty of pass-catching weapons as well, though one from last year departed during the spring. That was Michael Pittman Jr., who was traded to the Steelers. However, Indianapolis re-signed the blossoming Alec Pierce to a big contract. Pierce always had incredible talent, but didn’t put it together until the second half of the 2025 season. Pierce should continue to be a dynamic deep threat, while Josh Downs’ role will be expanded with Pittman gone. There’s also second-year tight end Tyler Warren, who will look to build on a stellar rookie campaign.

Another thing that helped Jones succeed last year was a stellar offensive line. The blocking unit lost a starter, however, as Braden Smith signed with the Texans in free agency. Jalen Travis, a fourth-round pick from the 2025 NFL Draft, will serve as the bookend for the excellent Bernhard Raimann. Smith was a stout right tackle, so he’ll sorely be missed unless Travis can step in as a quality replacement.

The interior of the Indianapolis front will at least remain intact. Quenton Nelson will continue to serve as one of the top guards in the NFL. The other two starters, center Tanor Bortolini and right guard Matt Goncalves, will reprise their roles. Bortolini was a pleasant surprise last year, performing on a very high level as a former fourth-round pick. Goncalves was just mediocre, but he’s also entering his third season, so he could improve.

2026 Indianapolis Colts Defense:
Prior to Daniel Jones’ injury, the Colts believed they were one of the frontrunners to win the Super Bowl. This is why they packaged multiple draft picks, including the extremely valuable 2027 first-round selection, to the Jets for Sauce Gardner. Jones, of course, suffered a season-ending injury, capsizing Indianapolis’ chances.

The Colts still have Gardner in their secondary, which gives them two extremely talented corners, with Charvarius Ward serving as the other. It appeared as though Indianapolis would have three stellar cornerbacks with Kenny Moore serving in the slot, but he was released shortly after the 2026 NFL Draft. The Colts will move forward with 2025 third-rounder Justin Walley in the slot. Walley has no NFL playing experience, so this could be a problem.

Safety is another area of concern. Camryn Bynum is a solid player, but the Colts could have a liability next to him if third-round rookie A.J. Haulcy struggles early in his career. With two players with no NFL experience starting in the secondary, there could be some communication issues in the Indianapolis defensive backfield.

Haulcy won’t be the only rookie starter patrolling the middle of Indianapolis’ defense. The Colts used a second-round pick on C.J. Allen, who figures to start alongside the pedestrian Akeem Davis-Gaither at linebacker. Allen is an instinctive player some projected to be chosen in the first round, so perhaps he’ll be able to provide an upgrade at a position of weakness.

While safety and linebacker are areas of major concern, the defensive line is far more stable. Still, it has question marks as well. Laiatu Latu is an extremely talented blossoming edge rusher who recorded 8.5 sacks in his second season. However, the Colts don’t have another proven pass rusher to complement Latu. Arden Key and Michael Clemons were signed in free agency, but they’re just mediocre veterans.

The Colts are much stronger in the interior of their defensive front. DeForest Buckner is one of the top defensive tackles in the NFL, though at 32, he could begin to decline soon. Grover Stewart is coming off a down year, but he’s usually a dominant run stuffer. The Colts signed Jerry “Crooked” Tillery for depth.

2026 Indianapolis Colts Schedule and Intangibles:
Kicker Spencer Shrader played just five games last year due to injury. He was nearly flawless in those five games, going 13-of-14.

Rigoberto Sanchez was one of the top punters in the NFL last year, finishing third in net punting.

The Colts could be buried with an early start of Ravens-Chiefs-Texans-Redskins. The schedule gets easier after that, aside from the three matchups against the Texans and Jaguars, as well as the battles against the Eagles and Bengals.

2026 Indianapolis Colts Analysis: Daniel Jones’ status will dictate how the Colts fare in 2026. If Jones can make a quick recovery from his torn Achilles and perform like he did in the first half of 2025, Indianapolis will be in contention for a deep playoff run. However, the more realistic scenario is that Jones struggles, especially in the first half of the season. In that scenario, the Colts will be buried in the standings, which will result in another season without a playoff appearance.

NFL Draft Team Grade: B- Grade

Goals Entering the 2026 NFL Draft: The Colts don’t have a first-round pick, so they’ll need to wait until the second round to address their pass rush. They lost countless defensive ends recently, with Laiatu Latu being the only viable threat remaining. The Colts will need to address a few other needs as well, including linebacker and right tackle.

2026 NFL Draft Accomplishments: It was shocking to see that the Colts didn’t address their pass rush until their fifth pick, No. 156. The good news is that they were able to obtain an unbelievable value in C.J. Allen in the middle of the second round. Allen easily could have gone in the teens, yet plummeted a whole round. He’s a very instinctive linebacker and will be a big upgrade in the middle of Indianapolis’ defense.

The bad news is that none of the Colts’ other picks really stood out. Outside of Allen, no Colts pick scored higher than a B+ until the 210s when Indianapolis obtained some good values. The Colts should have considered drafting edge rushers instead of a second linebacker or a guard, though I didn’t mind the guard pick (Jalen Farmer) too much.

Indianapolis inevitably landed two edge rushers in George Gumbs and Caden Curry. Both were good values, but they were chosen at Nos. 156 and 214, respectively, so it’ll be tough for them to be impactful right away. Thus, the Colts will likely struggle against Trevor Lawrence and C.J. Stroud this upcoming season.

NFL Draft Individual Grades:

53. C.J. Allen, LB, Georgia – A+ Grade

This pick is crazy because if the Colts had their natural pick in the first round and selected C.J. Allen there, no one would have had a big issue with it. The Colts then could have taken Allen in the second round, but they traded down and still got him! The Colts are filling a huge need with a very instinctive linebacker.

78. A.J. Haulcy, CB/S, LSU – B- Grade

A.J. Haulcy makes sense in the third round, which is where I had him slotted. He’s very good in zone coverage, though he’s a bit stiff. His versatility is nice, so the Colts should be graded fairly. I would have preferred an edge rusher though.

113. Jalen Farmer, G, Kentucky – B+ Grade

The Colts had to address their offensive line at some point after losing some talent recently. Jalen Farmer is a fierce blocker with long arms, and he also tested well athletically. He’s a solid choice in Round 4.

135. Bryce Boettcher, LB, Oregon – C+ Grade

Bryce Boettcher is undersized, but can cover well and seldom misses tackles. The Colts need linebacker help, but Bryce Boettcher was seen as a sixth-round prospect, making this a bit of a reach.

156. George Gumbs Jr., OLB, Florida – B+ Grade

George Gumbs is a raw edge rusher who has a high ceiling. The Colts needed as many edge rushers as possible entering the 2026 NFL Draft, so I like that they’re swinging for the fences.

214. Caden Curry, DE, Ohio State – A Grade

Caden Curry is a highly productive pass rusher with a nonstop motor. The Colts are filling a position of need with a great value; I had Curry slotted in the fourth round, so this is a steal.

237. Seth McGowan, RB, Kentucky – A- Grade

Seth McGowan is a patient runner with great vision, but didn’t have many explosive plays in college. Still, he’s a decent enough prospect to emerge as the backup behind Jonathan Taylor. I had McGowan as a fifth-round prospect, so there’s good value with this choice.

254. Deion Burks, WR, Oklahoma – A+ Grade

Deion Burks is small, but has terrific play-making ability. This is quite the fall for him; I had him in the third round. What an amazing value! It also fills a need with Michael Pittman Jr. gone.
