This 2011 NFL Mock Draft order is based on the official 2011 NFL Draft Order.
2011 NFL Mock Draft: Round 1, Picks 1-16
-
New England Patriots: Muhammad Wilkerson, DE/DT, Temple
I’ve had Cameron Jordan here what seems like forever. He’s still an option, but he’s not available in this version of my 2011 NFL Mock Draft despite being seemingly available. I’ll explain in the Tampa pick.
If Jordan isn’t on the board, the Patriots may trade down. I know, shocker.
One player the Patriots may target at No. 17 or the early 20s is Muhammad Wilkerson. They have a huge need on the defensive line, and Wilkerson seems like he would be a great fit in Bill Belichick’s scheme.
Other 2011 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Cameron Jordan, DE/DT – As mentioned above, Cameron Jordan is an option.
2. Lots of other options – I compiled a list of every team’s 2011 NFL Draft Team Big Boards. I listed 12 players for New England at No. 17.
MISSING
-
San Diego Chargers: Cameron Heyward, DE/DT, Ohio State
Jacques Cesaire, a declining defensive lineman, is a free agent. He needed to be upgraded anyway.
Cameron Heyward is the best player available who makes sense for the Chargers (I can’t see Cameron Jordan making it to No. 18). Heyward seems like the type of player A.J. Smith would go after.
Other 2011 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Muhammad Wilkerson, DE/DT – Another possible five-technique.
2. Anthony Castonzo or Gabe Carimi, OT – The Chargers have needed an upgrade at right tackle for years. The fact that A.J. Smith has not upgraded the position makes me believe that he won’t spend a first-round pick on a right tackle. But either Anthony Castonzo or Gabe Carimi could be the best player available on Smith’s board.
-
New York Giants: Anthony Castonzo, OT, Boston College
The Giants need a left tackle of the future because William Beatty has struggled thus far in his brief NFL career.
As Greg Cox mentioned in his 2011 NFL Mock Draft, Anthony Castonzo could appeal to Tom Coughlin because of their Boston College ties.
Other 2011 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Gabe Carimi, OT or Mike Pouncey, G – The Giants will probably take the best lineman available.
2. Akeem Ayers, OLB – Keith Bulluck is a 34-year-old free agent. The Giants are in need of an upgrade at strongside linebacker.
-
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: J.J. Watt, DE, Wisconsin
Let me make this clear – I DO NOT think J.J. Watt will be available at No. 20. That’s crazy talk. However, I know for a fact that the Buccaneers want to trade up for the following four defensive ends: Robert Quinn, Watt, Cameron Jordan and Ryan Kerrigan (not Aldon Smith).
I listed several possible 2011 NFL Draft Trades here. One of the projected deals I don’t have on the page has Tampa leapfrogging New England to move up to No. 15. The Buccaneers could then select Jordan or Kerrigan. I have Jordan as the better player, so he’s the guy.
If Tampa stays put at No. 20, this selection will be Adrian Clayborn, per a very reliable source.
By the way, if you’re a Bucs fan, make sure you check out Pewter Report.com. It’s the ultimate source for inside news on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, including all of the draft prospects they’re targeting.
Other 2011 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Adrian Clayborn, DE – Adrian Clayborn is Tampa’s guy if the team can’t trade up.
2. Akeem Ayers, OLB – If, for some reason, all of the defensive ends are off the board, this pick will be Akeem Ayers.
Pick change; previously Cameron Jordan, DE
-
Kansas City Chiefs: Nate Solder, OT, Colorado
In 2009, Scott Pioli drafted for positional value when he selected Tyson Jackson. Last year, he went the “best player available” route with Eric Berry. Both draft strategies would come into play here with Nate Solder.
Kansas City has a gaping hole at offensive tackle. I’m not a big fan of Branden Albert, but the huge void is at right tackle, where Barry Richardson struggled last year.
Solder, one of the top talents on the board, would be an instant upgrade on the right side, and could eventually transition to left tackle if Albert doesn’t improve. Greg is hearing from a source that the Chiefs really like Solder.
Other 2011 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Phil Taylor, NT – Pioli needs his Vince Wilfork. Unfortunately, Phil Taylor was diagnosed with an inoperable foot condition, which could cause him to drop out of the first round.
2. Brooks Reed or Akeem Ayers, DE/OLB – Kansas City needs help across from Tamba Hali.
3. Julio Jones, WR – The Chiefs want to trade up for Julio Jones. There’s a good chance they may do so if Jones drops to No. 12.
-
Indianapolis Colts: Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin
We all saw what happened to Peyton Manning amid pass protection issues against the Chargers on a Sunday night and the Cowboys the following week. Upgrades are needed everywhere.
Left tackle Charlie Johnson will be a free agent in March. He’s definitely not the elite blind-side protector Manning needs.
Other 2011 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Derek Sherrod or Nate Solder, OT – The Colts will explore all tackle options.
2. Mike Pouncey, G – Bill Polian spends his first-round picks on offensive players and pass-rushers.
-
Philadelphia Eagles: Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado
I’ve had Gabe Carimi slotted here for months, but it’s time for a change.
Andy Reid usually focuses on one player throughout the draft process. If he has to trade up to grab that player, he won’t hesitate. If he can stay put and still acquire that player, that’s even better. But if he misses out on that player, he trades out of the pick.
With Howard Mudd now on the coaching staff, I don’t think that Reid is targeting a tackle. Instead, it’s probably a cornerback – namely Prince Amukamara or Jimmy Smith.
The Eagles have the ammunition to trade up to Nos. 10-12 for Amukamara if they love him enough. Meanwhile, Smith has all the talent in the world. He has character issues, but Reid likes giving second chances to talented players.
Cornerback is a huge need, and I’ll be shocked if Philadelphia doesn’t address the position in the first two rounds of the 2011 NFL Draft.
Other 2011 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Prince Amukamara, CB – To move up to No. 10, the Eagles will have to surrender their second- and third-round selections. They have two picks in both the fourth and fifth rounds, so I can definitely see that happening.
2. Derek Sherrod or Gabe Carimi, OT – Derek Sherrod and Gabe Carimi both fit Philadelphia’s scheme to a tee. I also wouldn’t count out local product Ben Ijalana.
-
New Orleans Saints: Da’Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson
A big drop for Da’Quan Bowers. Bowers had a miserable Pro Day. His measurables were terrible, and he fatigued quickly in the drills. The medical recheck confirmed major concerns about his knee. He could fall out of the first round all together.
But this is a good spot for Bowers. The Saints need help on their defensive front, but it’s not like they’d need Bowers to contribute right away. They can afford to take a chance on a prospect with immense upside, and Bowers has the size New Orleans likes in its defensive ends.
Other 2011 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Muhammad Wilkerson, Marvin Austin or Corey Liuget, DT – The Shaun Rogers signing won’t keep the Saints from spending this selection on a defensive tackle.
2. Cameron Heyward or Adrian Clayborn, DE – The Saints need help across from Will Smith. Like Bowers, these defensive ends have the size New Orleans likes.
-
Seattle Seahawks: Corey Liuget, DT, Illinois
Brandon Mebane is a free agent, so the Seahawks need to find someone to fill those shoes if Mebane defects for another team.
Corey Liuget is a major steal at No. 25. He could go as high as No. 14 to the Rams, so I expect Seattle to be all over Liuget if he drops this far.
Other 2011 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Muhammad Wilkerson or Marvin Austin, DT – Other possible replacements for Mebane.
2. Jimmy Smith, CB – Despite his character concerns, I don’t think Jimmy Smith makes it past Seattle.
-
Baltimore Ravens: Derek Sherrod, OT, Mississippi State
The Ravens met with Derek Sherrod at the Senior Bowl and Combine. They’re obviously interested in him, and will probably select the athletic left tackle prospect if he’s available.
Jared Gaither missed the 2010 season with back injuries. Depending on what happens with the CBA, Gaither will probably be a free agent. If the Ravens don’t retain him, they’ll need a replacement.
Other 2011 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Jimmy Smith, CB – Baltimore needs corner help. Three of the team’s top four cornerbacks – Chris Carr, Josh Wilson and Fabian Washington – are all free agents this offseason.
2. Cameron Heyward, DE/DT – As Brian Baldinger said on Path to the Draft, “I know for a fact that if Cameron Heyward’s there at 26, the Ravens are not passing him up.”
-
Atlanta Falcons: Kyle Rudolph, TE, Notre Dame
Tony Gonzalez is definitely entering the final year of his career. But what if there’s no season? Gonzalez said he would retire if the lockout lasts a long time. Never mind the fact that Gonzalez was completely ineffective in 2010; this alone has to be a huge concern for the Falcons.
Atlanta has a ton options at No. 27, but Kyle Rudolph could be the top player on its board.
Other 2011 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Brooks Reed, DE – Atlanta likes defensive ends who can drop into coverage. Brooks Reed, a multi-year starter and a team captain, fits that description, and he’s the type of player general manager Thomas Dimitroff looks for.
2. Torrey Smith, WR – Dimitroff is all about finding players with great character and work ethic, which makes Torrey Smith a great fit for the Falcons. Smith is a high-effort guy who earned his degree in 2-and-a-half years. Oh, and he’s pretty talented too.
-
New England Patriots: Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama
The Patriots will probably trade this selection. With so many quarterback-hungry teams, someone is bound to trade up for a signal-caller. And if that’s Tennessee, Washington, Minnesota, Buffalo or Cincinnati, New England could land a potential top-10 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. Heck, if they do the same thing with No. 33, they could have three first-rounders (two in the top 10 with a rookie wage scale) next April. Wouldn’t that be insane?
If New England stays put, Mark Ingram is a strong option. The Patriots certainly don’t need Ingram, but he’s undoubtedly the top player available and certainly couldn’t hurt New England’s offense. The Patriots are actually fully expected to address the running back position this offseason.
Ingram falls because of the aforementioned concerns about his arthritic knee. However, there is some speculation that the Patriots like him, and could take him as high as No. 17. I think that’s more of a smokescreen, but he just presents too much value at No. 28.
Other 2011 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Muhammad Wilkerson or Cameron Heyward, DE/DT – Both of these guys would be strong options if available.
2. Akeem Ayers or Brooks Reed, DE/OLB – Now that Justin Houston’s stock is dropping after testing positive at the Combine, Akeem Ayers and Brooks Reed are the only rush linebacker options at No. 28.
-
Chicago Bears: Marvin Austin, DT, North Carolina
The poor Bears can’t upgrade their offensive front because all the first-round prospects are off the board. They could reach for Ben Ijalana or Stefen Wisniewski, but they might as well just wait until Round 2 to upgrade the line.
The Bears really like Marvin Austin. He could be the pick of the top linemen are off the board.
Other 2011 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Derek Sherrod, OT – The Bears would love to improve their offensive front, but all of the top linemen are off the board.
2. Aaron Williams, CB/FS – The Bears will look to upgrade the cornerback position this offseason. Aaron Williams is the top cornerback on the board, and he’s a great fit in Lovie Smith’s defense.
-
New York Jets: Phil Taylor, NT, Baylor
The Jets reportedly really like Phil Taylor. I dropped him in a previous version of my 2011 NFL Mock Draft because of his inoperable foot condition. However, the general consensus seems to be that it’s not much of an issue. Taylor wasn’t even asked to come back to Indianapolis for the medical re-check.
If the New York doctors give the front office the green light, I’m sure the Jets won’t hesitate to grab this year’s top nose tackle.
Other 2011 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Muhammad Wilkerson or Cameron Heyward, DE/DT – The Jets will certainly look at Muhammad Wilkerson and Cameron Heyward if they’re available.
2. Brooks Reed or Akeem Ayers, DE/OLB – New York has to improve its pass rush, both at five-technique and rush linebacker.
-
Pittsburgh Steelers: Aaron Williams, CB/FS, Texas
This is a tough spot for the Steelers. General manager Kevin Colbert takes the best players on his board, but the top prospects available are running backs, wide receivers and 4-3 personnel.
The best player who makes sense for the Steelers is Aaron Williams. Williams is a better fit for Pittsburgh’s defense than Brandon Harris, and he can play free safety in addition to cornerback. So, if he fails at corner, he could always replace Ryan Clark down the road (think Antrel Rolle).
Other 2011 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Brandon Harris or Ras-I Dowling, CB – The Steelers would love to obtain Maurkice Pouncey’s brother, but he won’t last this long. They’d have to trade up for him. Another cornerback option is more realistic.
2. Ben Ijalana, OT/G – Pittsburgh really needs to upgrade its blocking to keep Ben Roethlisberger healthy. Ben Ijalana would be a slight reach, but he just had a great Pro Day.
-
Green Bay Packers: Brooks Reed, DE/OLB, Arizona
If the Packers stay put at No. 32, they’ll be targeting Cameron Heyward, Akeem Ayers, Muhammad Wilkerson and Brooks Reed. Ayers and Reed are left, so either one could be the selection.
Frank Zombo had an important sack in the Super Bowl, but the Packers still need an upgrade across from Clay Matthews.
Reed had a great Combine; he ran the fastest 10-yard split of all the defensive linemen. In fact, his 10-yard split was only 0.05 seconds slower than Matthews’ – and we’ve all seen how explosive Matthews has been in Green Bay’s defense.
Other 2011 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Cameron Heyward or Muhammad Wilkerson, DE/DT – Johnny Jolly was recently arrested for drug possession. Cullen Jenkins is a free agent.
2. Akeem Ayers, DE/OLB – The other rush linebacker option.
