2026 Los Angeles Chargers Offense:
The Chargers looked like the best team in the NFL through three weeks last year. They slaughtered the Chiefs in Brazil and then had no issues dispatching the Raiders. They followed that up by defeating the eventual 14-3 Broncos, giving them a commanding sweep in the division. And then, everything collapsed, as they suffered some key injuries. Both tackles were lost, so Justin Herbert had poor protection in the pocket for the remainder of the season. It’s a testament to Herbert’s great talent and Jim Harbaugh’s terrific coaching that the Chargers were able to qualify for the playoffs despite the blocking issues.

The offensive line figures to be much better in 2026. Ra’Shawn Slater and Joe Alt will be back from injury to start at tackle again. Slater and Alt are a fantastic duo, so Herbert will be shielded quite well against edge rushers as long as they remain on the field.

The interior blocking was extremely poor as well last year. Center was a glaring weakness, while Mekhi Becton was so out of shape that he had to rotate off the field on some drives. The Chargers addressed both areas, acquiring three new interior linemen. Center Tyler Biadasz isn’t a great player, but he’ll be a big upgrade over what the Chargers had last year. Cole Strange was an underwhelming signing, but second-round pick Jake Slaughter could be an improvement as well. Slaughter can also play center, so he’ll give the Chargers insurance at that position if Biadasz were to suffer an injury.

With upgraded blocking and Mike McDaniel taking over as offensive coordinator, Herbert could have his best season yet. He’ll have nearly all of his receiving weapons back from last year, aside from Keenan Allen, who appeared to be running on fumes. Herbert already had a connection with Ladd McConkey, and he was able to establish some rhythm with Quentin Johnston, who finally lived up to his potential after being viewed as a first-round bust for several seasons. There’s also 2025 second-round receiver Tre’ Harris, who showed flashes at times, and tight end Oronde Gadsden Jr., who had a bright rookie year. The Chargers added David Njoku as a second receiving threat at tight end.

Herbert won’t be the only one who will be thrilled by the improved blocking. Omarion Hampton, last year’s first-round pick, will enjoy wider running lanes this season. Hampton didn’t have much to work with last season, but will have the job all to himself this season. Hampton drew some praise from McDaniel, who compared Hampton to Hall of Fame running back Terrell Davis.

2026 Los Angeles Chargers Defense:
As mentioned in the offensive portion, Justin Herbert and Jim Harbaugh did a great job of leading the Chargers into the playoffs. The defense also played a huge part, ranking second in EPA. This was despite some players missing time due to injury.

Khalil Mack was someone who missed a chunk of the season, as he was absent for five games. Despite this, the Chargers were able to record 45 sacks on the season. Trading for Odafe Oweh was a big part of that, with the former Raven logging 7.5 sacks. Oweh left via free agency, but the Chargers still have Mack and Tuli Tuipulotu on the edge. The latter led the Chargers in sacks with 13. Tuipulotu is just 23, so he has immense upside. On the other end of the spectrum, Mack turned 35 this offseason, so he could begin to decline soon. This would explain why the Chargers used their first-round pick on Miami edge rusher Akheem Mesidor.

With the help of a great pass rush, the Chargers’ secondary was able to perform above expectations. Cornerbacks like Tarheeb Still and Donte Jackson were able to show improvement last year, though Cam Hart struggled in coverage. The Chargers should have upgraded this position during the offseason.

The best player in the Charger secondary continued to be Derwin James, one of the elite safeties in the NFL. James has an extensive injury history, but missed only one game last season. The two other primary safeties, Tony Jefferson and R.J. Mickens, didn’t have the same injury luck. They missed four and seven games, respectively. Both were solid, but unspectacular when they were available.

Another Charger defender who missed extensive time was Denzel Perryman, who was sidelined for seven games. Perryman doesn’t do much in coverage, but he’s excellent in run support. He plays next to Daiyan Henley, a 26-year-old linebacker coming off a down season. Henley thrived in coverage during the prior season, so perhaps he’ll revert to that level in 2026.

The weakest part of the Charger defense is the front line. An upgrade was expected in this area, but all the Chargers could do to improve it was to sign declining veteran Dalvin Tomlinson. The journeyman will start alongside 2025 third-rounder Jamaree Caldwell and Teair Tart. Neither offers much in the pass-rushing department, but both handle the run well.

2026 Los Angeles Chargers Schedule and Intangibles:
The Chargers have no home-field advantage. They are 37-35 as hosts since moving back to Los Angeles in 2017. They’re 41-38 as visitors in that span. The NFL will have to consider moving the Chargers, perhaps to Oakland, Oklahoma City, San Antonio, or Salt Lake City.

The Chargers have endured major kicking woes for years, but perhaps they found a solution in Cameron Dicker. “Dicker the Kicker” went 31-of-33 in 2023 and then 39-of-42 in 2024. He had another great year in 2025, going 38-of-41. He was 5-of-6 from 50-plus this past season.

J.K. Scott routinely finished near the bottom of net average, but that was not the case the past three years. He’s been in the middle of the pack recently. He’s also done a good job of pinning the opposition inside the 20.

The Chargers have a few easy non-divisional games against the Cardinals, Jets, Dolphins, and Buccaneers. There are more difficult games versus the Seahawks, Rams, 49ers, Bills, Patriots, Ravens, and Texans.

2026 Los Angeles Chargers Analysis: Last year was Murphy’s Law for the Chargers, and yet they still were able to qualify for the playoffs. If they have better injury luck this season, Justin Herbert could have an MVP-caliber season, as he’ll have great protection and terrific coaching aiding him. The defense, meanwhile, could continue to serve as a top-10 unit, though there could be some regression without Jesse Minter. This could allow for the Chargers to finally get over the hump and make a deep trip into the playoffs.

NFL Draft Team Grade: C+ Grade

Goals Entering the 2026 NFL Draft: The Chargers will be getting their two tackles back from injury, but they need an overhaul for their interior blocking to make sure that Justin Herbert is actually shielded well this year. There are certain areas the Chargers need to upgrade on defense, namely the interior defensive line, linebacker, and cornerback.

2026 NFL Draft Accomplishments: The Chargers spent a whopping four picks on offensive linemen, but they took a quick detour in the first round when they addressed the other side of the trenches with Akheem Mesidor. This wasn’t a very good pick because Mesidor is an old prospect who was able to benefit from the presence of Rueben Bain. He was a second-round prospect, so the Chargers should have traded down or targeted another player.

The first blocker was chosen with the next pick, as Jake Slaughter was targeted to play the interior. Slaughter can start at guard and center, so his versatility will be key if the Chargers have mass injuries again. Fourth-round tackle Travis Burke can play both the left and right side, so his presence will be important for the same reason. Logan Taylor and Alex Harkey were both strong values toward the end of the draft. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if one of them eventually fought for a starting job at guard.

The Chargers had some other decent picks, including fourth-rounder Brenen Thompson, a dangerous threat as a slot receiver who can replace Keenan Allen’s production. There’s also Genesis Smith, who may not have sonic speed, but possesses great instincts at the position.

I’d say the Chargers came away with a passable draft class. I would not call it great, or even good though. The Chargers had eight picks, and only one (Taylor) scored higher than a B+. They also whiffed on their opening-round choice.

NFL Draft Individual Grades:

22. Akheem Mesidor, DE, Miami – C- Grade

I’m not a fan of this pick. It fills a need, but Akheem Mesidor is an old prospect (25), so there’s not much upside. Mesidor was also able to ride Rueben Bain’s coattails, so there’s no way of knowing how he would have performed if opposing teams were able to focus on him.

63. Jake Slaughter, C, Florida – B+ Grade

The Chargers had a disaster of an offensive line last year. Part of that was the injury to the tackles, but the other part was poor interior blocking. This will help. Jake Slaughter is a solid prospect who is strong and athletic.

105. Brenen Thompson, WR, Mississippi State – B+ Grade

Brenen Thompson is an undersized slot receiver, but he’s a dangerous threat. The Chargers needed a receiver with Keenan Allen gone, so they had to address the position. I thought Thompson could’ve gone in Round 3, so I like the value.

117. Travis Burke, OT, Memphis – B Grade

The Chargers needed another tackle in case Rashawn Slater can’t stay healthy. Travis Burke is a huge and long tackle with upside, but has slow feet. He’ll probably be a backup, but there’s a chance he could emerge as a starter down the road.

131. Genesis Smith, S, Arizona – B Grade

Genesis Smith may not have sonic speed, but he’s an instinctive safety with great length. I had him slotted around this range, so this pick makes sense.

145. Nick Barrett, DT, South Carolina – B Grade

Nick Barrett is a stout defensive tackle, but doesn’t have much quickness. He’s also raw and inexperienced. There’s some upside though, and he could potentially fill a need. I had him going around this range.

202. Logan Taylor, G, Boston College – A Grade

Logan Taylor is a strong lineman, but lacks any sort of quickness. Still, I had Taylor slotted in the fourth round, so I love the value the Chargers are getting. Even better, they’re filling a need and making Justin Herbert happy.

206. Alex Harkey, OT/G, Oregon – B+ Grade

Another lineman. Justin Herbert must be thrilled. Alex Harkey is a nasty run blocker, but must improve his pass protection. So, maybe it’s Omarion Hampton who is happier. Still, the more blockers, the better.
