2026 San Francisco 49ers Offense:
Many in the fantasy football community believed that Christian McCaffrey would suffer an injury last year, but in an odd turn of events, McCaffrey was the only significant 49ers player to remain healthy all year. In fact, McCaffrey had a terrific season in which he rushed for 1,202 yards and caught 102 passes for 924 receiving yards. McCaffrey was incredible, but his usage was through the roof. He led the NFL in carries, so history suggests he will regress in 2026, most likely as a result of injury.
If McCaffrey misses time, Brock Purdy will be tasked with carrying the offense, so the 49ers will have to hope that they have better injury luck with their aerial offense. Purdy, George Kittle, and Ricky Pearsall all missed significant time last year. Purdy performed at a high level when he was on the field, completing 69 percent of his passes. However, he’ll once again be operating without Kittle, who will miss a chunk of the season with a torn ACL. However, Jake Tonges has proven to be a capable replacement.
Purdy will no longer have Jauan Jennings as a downfield weapon, though the 49ers replaced him with Mike Evans. That could prove beneficial, considering Evans has been one of the league’s premier playmakers for years. However, there’s a downside, which is Evans’ age and injury history. Evans, who turns 33 in August, has a habit of missing action with hamstring issues. San Francisco will be hoping for a reversal of that, as well as better injury variance concerning Pearsall and Christian Kirk. Pearsall has missed extensive time through two seasons, while Kirk has had a habit of being unavailable throughout the years. Second-round rookie De’Zhaun Stribling could see extensive playing time if the players in front of him get hurt.
All of this would have mattered very little for the 49ers had they not agreed to terms with Trent Williams during the offseason. Despite his age (38 in August), Williams is still one of the top left tackles in the NFL. San Francisco’s offense has proven to be dysfunctional when Williams has missed time due to injury, so having him back is enormous for the team’s Super Bowl aspirations. However, given Williams’ age, there’s a possibility of regression. The good news is that Colton McKivitz has proven to be an excellent bookend for Williams.
The 49ers are much weaker along the interior of their offensive line, though 2024 third-rounder Dominick Puni is a quality guard. Jake Brendel is a passable center, but left guard Connor Colby has been a big liability. The 49ers signed former Cowboy Robert Jones and used a fourth-round pick on Carver Willis to compete with Colby.
2026 San Francisco 49ers Defense:
The 49ers ranked in the top eight in fewest yardage allowed to the opposition every year between 2019 and 2024. That changed last year, with the 49ers ranking 20th in that regard. The difference was that the 49ers suffered a barrage of defensive injuries. Their two best defenders missed a combined 25 games.
Nick Bosa suffered a season-ending injury during the Week 3 victory versus the Cardinals. His absence had an adverse impact on the pass rush, which was one of the worst in the NFL. The pass rush was so putrid that no San Francisco player logged more than four sacks. Clelin Ferrell and Bryce Huff paced the team with just four sacks apiece, while Bosa had two sacks in the three games he played. Bosa’s return to full strength will obviously help the 49ers apply more pressure on opposing quarterbacks. The 49ers will be hoping that 2025 first-rounder Mykel Williams will be able to produce opposite Bosa after a lost rookie year. Third-round rookie Romello Height could be in the mix as well.
San Francisco couldn’t just rely on Bosa returning to action. They made a move to strengthen an especially weak defensive tackle situation by trading a third-round pick to the Cowboys for Osa Odighizuwa. The 6-foot-2, 280-pounder is a liability against the run, but can apply decent quarterback pressure. He figures to start next to Alfred Collins, who is coming off a miserable rookie season. Collins, chosen in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft, was a huge disappointment, but is young and can improve. The 49ers used a fourth-round selection on Gracen Halton, so perhaps he’ll compete with Collins for the starting job next to Odighizuwa.
The other primary San Francisco defender who missed extensive action was Fred Warner, who was sidelined for 11 contests. Warner is arguably the best off-ball linebacker in the NFL, so his presence was sorely missed. The 49ers had poor play from their other linebackers, so they knew they had to acquire another talent to join Warner in his return to action. That other talent is a former 49er who played very well for the team in the past. That would be Dre Greenlaw, who has missed extensive time over the past couple of years with an injury. However, Greenlaw is further removed from the injury he suffered in the Super Bowl loss to the Chiefs, so he’ll have a good chance to return to his previous form. If so, the 49ers will go from having the putrid play at linebacker they were stricken with during the final three months of the season, to possessing elite play at the position.
If Bosa and Warner return to full strength, the 49ers will be weakest in the secondary. Cornerbacks Renardo Green, Deommodore Lenoir, and Upton Stout all struggled last year, partly due to the lack of support from the pass rush. However, they’re not great talents in the first place. Lenoir has been inconsistent throughout his career, while Green is a recent second-round pick who was better during his rookie campaign than he was in 2025. Stout, a third-round rookie last season, had a middling campaign, but is young and could improve, just like Green. San Francisco brought in veteran Nate Hobbs and fourth-round rookie Ephesians Prysock to compete for playing time.
Safety isn’t in much better shape. Malik Mustapha and Ji’Ayir Brown will reprise their roles as starters, but this was an area San Francisco was expected to address. Neither player is a big liability, but they haven’t exactly been quality performers either.
2026 San Francisco 49ers Schedule and Intangibles:
The 49ers had some major kicking woes in 2024. Jake Moody was terrible, going 24-of-34, so it seemed certain that the 49ers would replace him. They signed Greg Joseph to challenge him in training camp, but eventually went with Eddy Pineiro, who was almost perfect. He was 28-of-29, including 6-of-7 from 50-plus.
San Francisco will have its third different punter in three years. Corliss Waitman will replace Thomas Morstead. Waitman finished 17th in net punting while with the Steelers last year.
The 49ers had one of the easiest schedules ever seen last year. Things project to be tougher this time. Instead of battling the NFC South, they go against the Broncos, Chargers, Chiefs, Eagles, and the Seahawks and Rams twice. There are some easy opponents as well, but the 49ers have to travel outside the country twice, including once to Australia.

NFL Draft Team Grade: MILLEN Grade
Goals Entering the 2026 NFL Draft: Though the 49ers made it to the second round of the playoffs last year, they had severe issues pressuring quarterbacks. They’ll need several new defensive linemen. They’ll also have to find insurance for Trent Williams, while also addressing a receiver group that is led by a 34-year-old newcomer and a third-year injury-prone player.
2026 NFL Draft Accomplishments: I received a text during the weekend that said, “I don’t think John Lynch prepared for the draft.” If he did, we certainly saw no evidence of that in a disastrous performance for San Francisco.
Things started off well for the 49ers, who moved out of the first round to pick up some draft capital. They received calls for the No. 33 pick throughout Friday, but opted not to trade the pick. They definitely should have because they used it on third-round prospect De’Zhaun Stribling. This was just the beginning of the disastrous weekend for Lynch. I didn’t mind the Romello Height pick like others did, but selecting Kaelon Black in the third round when everyone was passing on running backs seemed irresponsible. The 49es didn’t even need a running back, as they could have continued to bolster their weak defense.
Lynch kicked Day 3 off on a positive note with Gracen Halton to improve the defensive interior, but conducted a series of reaches after that. The worst pick as fifth-rounder Jaen Dugger, who wasn’t even listed in my top 400.
The 49ers deserve a Millen grade for this debacle. They made very minimal upgrades to their roster and spent too many picks on unnecessary positions.
NFL Draft Individual Grades:
33. De’Zhaun Stribling, WR, Ole Miss – MILLEN Grade
The 49ers had all day to trade down, and they should have done so because they wasted the No. 33 pick on a third-round prospect. De’Zhaun Stribling has some big-play ability, but he probably would have been available 20 picks later. Why not trade down and get some capital, even if it’s not at full value?
70. Romello Height, DE/OLB, Texas Tech – B Grade
I got a text from someone saying, “I don’t think John Lynch prepared for this draft.” This pick is at least a decent one. I had Romello Height going in this range, and he potentially fills a big need for a team that couldn’t get after the quarterback last year.
90. Kaelon Black, RB, Indiana – B Grade
Kyle Shanahan drafted a running back. Surprise, surprise! I had Kaelon Black going in this area, as he’s a player who’s a quick, powerful runner. I’m intrigued to see what Kyle Shanahan can do with Black, and it’s not out of the question that he could be a starter down the road.
107. Grace Halton, DT, Oklahoma – A- Grade
The 49ers finally make a decent pick. Gracen Halton is an interior pass rusher and a disruptor. The 49ers had a huge weakness here, and Halton could’ve been taken in Round 3 with no issues.
127. Carver Willis, OT, Washington – C+ Grade
A successor for Trent Williams in a few years? Maybe, but probably not. I had Carver Willis in the seventh round. Willis improved throughout his collegiate career, but needs to get stronger for the pros. He’s a project.
139. Ephesians Prysock, CB, Washington – C Grade
Ephesians Prysock is a tall and lenghty cornerback who can match up with big wide receivers. He’s pretty stiff though, so I had him going in the seventh round. The 49ers are not drafting for value this year.
154. Jaden Dugger, LB, Louisiana – MILLEN Grade
I didn’t have Jaden Dugger as a draftable player, or even a priority UDFA. He was not in my top 400. This is an embarrassing pick.
179. Enrique Cruz Jr., OT, Kansas – D Grade
Enrique Cruz Jr. is an athletic offensive tackle, but has short arms and may have to move to guard. I didn’t have Cruz in my top-400 prospects, so he was nowhere near my mock draft, but at least the 49ers are taking someone with a bit of upside.
