2026 Carolina Panthers Offense:
The Carolina coaches and front office personnel were excited when the team moved up from No. 9 to 1 ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft. Everyone was thrilled about the prospect of selecting C.J. Stroud, but owner David “Axe” Tepper had other ideas. Not only did Tepper force Bryce Young to be the pick; he then fired everyone who disagreed with him. Tepper looked like an utter fool for two years, but Stroud declined in 2025, while Young had his best season. Stroud over Young is still the consensus, but it’s much closer than it used to be.

Young had the luxury of playing behind a better offensive line last year, but that changed in the playoff loss to the Rams when left tackle Ikem Ekwonu tore his patellar tendon. This was a devastating injury that will sideline Ekwonu until 2027. The Panthers signed Rasheed Walker to a 1-year deal to compensate for this unfortunate incident. Walker was solid but not great for the Packers, so he’ll be a fine short-term replacement. Carolina drafted another replacement for a different tackle with the No. 19 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. They selected the athletic Monroe Freeling, who could take over for Taylor Moton down the road, or fill in at left tackle in 2027 if Ekwonu still isn’t healthy. Moton has been a terrific right tackle for Carolina, but he’s entering his contract year.

The Panthers also have some talented interior blockers, though one had to be replaced. Guards Damien Lewis and Robert Hunt are a talented duo, but the latter played just two games in 2026 because of a torn bicep. Center is the problem area, thanks to Austin Corbett and Cade Mays both departing in free agency. Luke Fortner was brought in to start, but he was just a mediocre blocker with the Saints last year. Fifth-round rookie Sam Hecht could challenge for the job.

Aside from center and left tackle, it’s pretty much status quo for the Panthers. There are a couple of minor exceptions, with one being the third-round pick used on Chris Brazzell. The Tennessee product is a very athletic player, so he could challenge the disappointing Xavier Legette for snaps. Young will continue to utilize 2025 first-round pick Tetairoa McMillan and the reliable Jalen Coker. McMillan could make a big leap in his sophomore campaign, but he could also regress a bit due to his reported poor work ethic.

The other minor change is that Rico Dowdle is gone. Dowdle took over for an injured Chuba Hubbard in the middle of the 2025 season and had a couple of great performances. He signed with the Steelers, but the Panthers will get 2024 second-round pick Jonathon Brooks back from injury. Brooks has lots of potential, but has barely played in the NFL because of knee issues. Hubbard is likely to lead Carolina in carries, and he’s proven he can do a decent job of being the bell-cow back.

2026 Carolina Panthers Defense:
While the Panthers largely remained the same offensively this offseason, they made wholesale changes on the defensive side of the ball. This was imperative, given Carolina’s severe defensive struggles in recent years.

Jaelan Phillips is one of two prominent defenders the Panthers added. Carolina’s pass-rushing struggles persisted for many years, but that may now be a thing of the past. Phillips is a Pro Bowl edge-rushing talent who will give his new team a double-digit sack threat. Phillips’ presence should open up some opportunities for Carolina’s other primary edge rusher, Nic Scourton. A second-round pick from the 2025 NFL Draft, Scourton showed some potential last year with five sacks, tying the team lead in that category.

There’s not much difference in talent between Phillips and Carolina’s other mega signing, Devin Lloyd. The former Jaguar is one of the top off-ball linebackers in the NFL. Lloyd will be a huge boost for the Panthers, who have lacked great play at linebacker for a long time. The other starter, Trevin Wallace, was just mediocre last year.

The Panthers also used a second-round pick to strengthen the defense, picking up nose tackle Lee Hunter. Stopping the run has been a problem for many seasons, so Hunter and Lloyd will strongly aid those efforts. Of course, the best player on Carolina’s front will continue to be the stellar Derrick Brown, who was sorely missed in 2024 when he missed most of the season. Brown tied Scourton for the team lead in sacks with five last year.

Carolina’s secondary is the only area that remains unchanged on the defense, save for a couple of third-day draft choices. Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson will continue to serve as the outside cornerbacks, while Chau Smith-Wade will once again line up in the slot. Horn is considered one of the better cornerbacks in the NFL, but he’s coming off a down season. In fact, Jackson had a much better 2025 campaign. Smith-Wade, a fifth-round selection from the 2024 NFL Draft, has been mediocre at best.

Tre’von Moehrig and Nick Scott are also back to reprise their roles at safety. Moehrig was signed away from the Raiders last offseason and did a solid job in run support for the Panthers. Nick Scott, meanwhile, just had his best season after being a journeyman safety for many years. Scott, however, just turned 31, so there could be a decline on the horizon. Lathan Ransom had some nice performances late last year despite being a fourth-round rookie, so he could be the long-term starter. Fifth-round rookie Zakee Wheatley will also be in the mix.

2026 Carolina Panthers Schedule and Intangibles:
Ryan Fitzgerald had a solid initial season as the Panthers’ kicker. He went 24-of-29, with most of his misses occurring from 50-plus (2-of-5).

Sam Martin isn’t a great punter, but he’s consistent. He was 25th in net punting in 2024 and 25th in net punting in 2025.

The Panthers have a first-place schedule, so their non-divisional games will be tough. They have to take on the Lions, Bears, Eagles, Seahawks, and Broncos. Luckily for them, they have some easy divisional games.

2026 Carolina Panthers Analysis: If the Panthers figure out their issues on the offensive line – pertaining to the new left tackle and center – they’ll be a better team in 2026 than they were last year because of the improvements they’ve made defensively. Despite this, however, the Panthers could still have a similar record this season because they have a much tougher first-place schedule.

NFL Draft Team Grade: A Grade

Goals Entering the 2026 NFL Draft: Panthers owner Axe Tepper will always do whatever it takes to make his Bryce Young decision look good, so he could force another offensive player with the pick. The Panthers, however, need to improve their defense. They could target the best defensive player at No. 19 if Tepper doesn’t meddle again.

2026 NFL Draft Accomplishments: The Panthers had seven picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, and five of them scored an A- or better. The two exceptions were graded as “B” and B-. It’s safe to say that Carolina put together a tremendous draft class.

The terrific drafting began in the first round when the Panthers secured Monroe Freeling to protect Bryce Young. With tackle being a huge issue suddenly, the Panthers correctly identified that they had to address this position, and they did so with a high-upside player who can play on the blind side. Then, on Day 2, the Panthers obtained two steals in Lee Hunter and Chris Brazzell, both of whom could have been chosen 20-30 picks earlier with no real complaints. Brazzell could develop into a dynamic weapon for Young.

The Panthers continued their success on Day 3, snagging a talented cornerback in Will Lee, a potential starting center in Sam Hecht, and a possible future starting safety in Zakee Wheatley. This capped off their excellent draft.

NFL Draft Individual Grades:

19. Monroe Freeling, OT, Georgia – A- Grade

Some thought that Monroe Freeling would be the first tackle off the board early in this process. That turned out to be nonsense, but Freeling seems like good value here. The Panthers suddenly need tackle help with Ikem Ekwonu dealing with a devastating injury and Taylor Moton heading into his contract year. Protecting Bryce Young is very important, so I like that the Panthers decided to make this decision.

49. Lee Hunter, NT, Texas Tech – A Grade

Lee Hunter had some first-round buzz, but bigger nose tackles tend to fall. The thing is, Hunter has good athleticism for someone at his size. I like the value the Panthers are getting here, as they are improving their troubled run defense.

83. Chris Brazzell, WR, Tennessee – A- Grade

Chris Brazzell is an absolute play-maker. He would have gone much earlier than this if he didn’t have character concerns. There’s a low floor here, but the ceiling is huge. Bryce Young has to be thrilled by this pick.

129. Will Lee, CB, Texas A&M – A- Grade

Will Lee is a cornerback with plenty of upside, as he has great length and size. The Panthers had a need for multiple defensive backs entering this draft, and you could argue that Lee could’ve been chosen a bit earlier than this.

144. Sam Hecht, C, Kansas State – B- Grade

Sam Hecht has supposedly maxed out his frame, so there’s not much upside. He has below-average power. He should be a fine backup, and I had him going around this range, so this pick is just OK.

151. Zakee Wheatley, S, Penn State – A Grade

Zakee Wheatley is considered a sleeper safety prospect. He was stout against the run for Penn State. I had him going late in the third round, so this is spectacular value and fills a need.

227. Jackson Kuwatch, LB, Miami of Ohio – B Grade

Jackson Kuwatch needs to be developed, but tested well at his pro day. The Panthers need to continue to address their defense, and I like that they’re swinging for the fences in Round 7.
