2026 Detroit Lions Offense:
There were a number of reasons to be bearish about Detroit’s chances last year. One was Ben Johnson’s departure. The premier offensive coordinator was hired by the Bears, so Detroit clearly missed his creative playcalling. This was evident when his replacement, John Morton, was demoted during the middle of the season. Dan Campbell took the reins as far as playcalling was concerned, and while he did a much better job than Morton, he was still far inferior to what the Lions possessed with Johnson.
Another reason why the Lions were not projected to qualify for the playoffs in last year’s season preview was that the offensive line was diminished. Jared Goff is a talented passer who can thrive when everything around him is perfect, but the offensive line broke down at times last season, causing Goff’s stats to worsen. Goff’s completion percentage fell from 72.4 to 68.0, while his touchdown total dropped from 37 to 34. Goff still played very well at times, but he was not as great as he was in 2024 when he led the Lions to a 15-2 record.
The Lions made sure to address the offensive line this offseason, though long-time right tackle Taylor Decker departed after an ugly spat with the front office. The Lions had to draft Blake Miller as a replacement to be the bookend for All-Pro Penei Sewell. Decker is coming off a down year, so perhaps Miller won’t have too difficult a time filling his shoes.
Detroit acquired another offensive lineman to help bolster the interior of the front, which was the major problem area. It hurt that Frank Ragnow retired and Kevin Zeitler left for Tennessee in free agency. Ragnow was one of the better centers in the NFL, and the Lions came nowhere near to replacing him. Now, they’ll have Cade Mays, who was signed over from Carolina. Mays was solid, though not great, for the Panthers last year, and he’ll still be an upgrade over what Detroit had. Mays will be flanked by Tate Ratledge and Christian Mahogany. Ratledge performed well for a second-round rookie in 2025, and he could improve now that he has experience. Mahogany wasn’t as good, but he’s also young (25), so he could play better in his second full season as a starter.
An improved offensive line will help Goff get the ball to his playmakers. Top receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams will continue to operate as dynamic threats. Williams saw a surge last year when Campbell took over for Morton, so he should continue to perform on a high level. There’s also Isaac TeSlaa, a very athletic receiver entering his second season. TeSlaa, who has shown he can be a threat in the end zone, will get more playing time this year with Kalif Raymond gone. Goff will have access to Sam LaPorta as well; the gifted tight end missed the final seven games of the season.
Goff’s best weapon hasn’t been mentioned yet, and that would be Jahmyr Gibbs. Arguably the most talented running back in the NFL, Gibbs is set to have a monster season because David Montgomery is no longer on the roster. Gibbs saw a big uptick in production following Morton’s demotion, so that will be even more apparent this year with Montgomery now in Houston.
2026 Detroit Lions Defense:
Another reason why there was so much pessimism surrounding the Lions last year was because they had a number of players who were returning from injury. Some were still hurt, like Alim McNeill, who ended up missing the first six weeks of the season and was never healthy upon his return. The Lions still have some players who will be back from injury, but they’re in much better shape than they were last year.
Beginning with McNeill, the stud defensive tackle was sorely missed late in 2024 and then the early portion of 2025. The Lions couldn’t pressure opposing quarterbacks very much from the defensive interior, but that’ll change now that he’s 100 percent. He’ll start next to 2025 first-round pick Tyleik Williams, who will have to rebound from a rough rookie campaign.
Of course, the best player on Detroit’s defensive front will be Aidan Hutchinson, who was another key player absent from Detroit’s shocking loss to the Redskins in the playoffs during the 2024 NFL season. Hutchinson notched 14.5 sacks and a ridiculous 100 quarterback pressures in 2025, so there were no lingering signs of his injury. Hutchinson also didn’t have anyone commanding attention from the other side, so the Lions signed D.J. Wonnum and then spent a second-round pick on Derrick Moore to find a far greater threat opposite Hutchinson. Wonnum is very talented and has a history of high production, so he could be a big contributor. Moore has loads of potential as well.
Two of the Detroit defenders who are still nursing injuries are safeties Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch. When healthy, they’re one of the top safety tandems in the NFL, so their absences will be felt if they can’t make it back to the field to start the year. They seem likely to miss time, given that Branch tore his Achilles in December, while Joseph is dealing with a chronic knee issue. Because of these injuries, the Lions signed Chuck Clark and Christian Izien to compete with Avonte Maddox and Thomas Harper for those two spots. Clark is an experienced veteran, but he’s not very good. Izien is worse, so perhaps the incumbents will remain at their positions after passable jobs last year.
The Lions also had injury issues at cornerback late in the year. D.J. Reed and Terrion Arnold were slated to be starters, but the latter was released after a shocking off-the-field incident. Arnold had two underwhelming seasons, so he won’t be missed very much. Reed is better, and he’ll start opposite Rock Ya-Sin, a mediocre performer. The Lions also signed Roger McCreary, who can fill in well in the slot.
Rounding out the defense, the Lions will once again have some great play at linebacker. Jack Campbell is one of the top off-ball linebackers in the NFL. Malcolm Rodriguez, conversely, had a putrid 2025 campaign because, like McNeill, he was coming off injury and was never 100 percent once he returned to action after missing some time. Rodriguez is a solid player, particularly in run support, so he should be much better in 2026.
2026 Detroit Lions Schedule and Intangibles:
Jake Bates was 26-of-29 in 2024, but wasn’t as good last year. He was 27-of-34, going just 4-of-9 from 50-plus.
Punter Jack Fox placed 11th in net average, and he did a good job of pinning the opposition inside the 20.
The Lions have the easiest schedule in the NFL. They get to battle the NFC South, the Titans, Cardinals, Jets, Dolphins, and Giants. Their only truly tough games are against the Bills, Patriots, and Bears (twice).

2026 Detroit Lions Analysis: The Lions were projected to miss the playoffs in this space last year. That won’t be the prediction this season, as it’s very likely that they’ll rebound. Their offensive line and coordinator situations are better, while the defense doesn’t have nearly as many players returning from injury. Detroit also has the easiest schedule in the NFL, so it won’t be difficult for the team to rack up plenty of wins.

The pricing is correct, as the Lions need multiple blockers. They’ll also need to find another pass-rushing presence to complement Aidan Hutchinson.
2026 NFL Draft Accomplishments: The Lions wanted Kadyn Proctor so much so that they were considering trading up for him. That idea went out the window when the Dolphins snatched Proctor at No. 12. Detroit had to settle for Blake Miller, who is just fine a consolation prize.
With their new tackle, the Lions entered Day 2 looking to address their pass rush. They identified a pass rusher they wanted and traded up for him, which was an irresponsible decision because they squandered resources when there were plenty of other edge rushers available, and it’s not like Derrick Moore is any better than Zion Young or Gabe Jacas.
The blunders continued into Day 3, where the Lions neglected to address the rest of their offensive line. They made some fine picks – Keith Abney was a quality value in Round 5 – but it’s shocking that the Lions, who had severe blocking issues at times last year, exited the 2026 NFL Draft with only one offensive lineman. Drafting a blocker over Kendrick Law, for example, would have been a much better strategy.

NFL Draft Individual Grades:
17. Blake Miller, OT, Clemson – B+ Grade
The Lions desperately needed a tackle with Taylor Decker gone, and there was some discussion that they’d move up for Kadyn Proctor. Instead, they get Blake Miller, who fills an obvious need. I would have preferred Monroe Freeling over Miller, but I can see why Detroit would make this move. He’s a great athlete with lots of upside, but needs to get stronger for the pros, so he’s a project of sorts.
44. Derrick Moore, DE, Michigan – MILLEN DON’T FORGET YOUR KIELBASA FOR KIELBASA DAY Grade
Yuck. I thought the Lions were going to trade up for Zion Young or Gabe Jacas. All of these talented edge rushers seemed like the Lions were going to fall to the Lions at No. 50. Yet, they moved up six spots for … Derrick Moore? The Michigan edge rusher was productive in school, but he’s undersized, so I definitely ranked him behind the other edge rushers. Horrible!
118. Jimmy Rolder, LB, Michigan – B Grade
The Lions lost a linebacker in free agency, so a replacement makes sense at this spot. Jimmy Rolder is a quality tackler, but struggles to cover. He hasn’t started many games. Still, he’s someone I had in the fourth round, so this is a fine pick.
157. Keith Abney, CB, Arizona State – A Grade
Keith Abney is a small cornerback but projects to play very well in the slot. The Lions have had issues with their cornerbacks recently, and they’re taking a quality prospect with value at this choice.
168. Kendrick Law, WR, Kentucky – C Grade
Kendrick Law is a speedy slot receiver. The Lions obviously already have someone to play in the slot, but this is insurance in case Amon-Ra St. Brown gets hurt. I had Law as a Round 6-7 player, however.
205. Skyler Gill-Howard, DT, Texas Tech – B+ Grade
Skyler Gill-Howard is extremely explosive, but happens to be very undersized. Injury history is a concern as well. If it wasn’t for the injuries, he would have gone around the fourth round, so you could argue the Lions are getting some value.
222. Tyre West, DE, Tennessee – B+ Grade
Tyre West has a good motor and versatility, but he’s undersized. I had West going to the Lions at No. 213, so I have to support this selection. The Lions need more pass rushers, so this pick makes sense.
