2026 Denver Broncos Offense:
Sean Payton was criticized for his decision to select Bo Nix in the opening round of the 2024 NFL Draft, but the Broncos have been very successful with him at quarterback. Nix engineered a terrific final drive to defeat the Bills in the divisional round of the playoffs, but injured himself in the process. He missed the AFC Championship with a broken ankle and will be in jeopardy of being hindered by the injury when he takes the field in 2026.

Payton made sure Nix would be able to take the next step when he fully returns from injury. Nix’s completion percentage dropped from 66.3 in his rookie campaign to 63.4 last year, and Payton must have thought it was because of the lack of experience at receiver, save for Courtland Sutton, who accumulated 1,017 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in 2025. Rather than hoping that the likes of Troy Franklin and Pat Bryant will develop, Payton traded a first-round pick to the Dolphins for Jaylen Waddle. The 27-year-old wideout is coming off a very disappointing season in which he failed to reach 1,000 receiving yards despite Tyreek Hill being absent for most of the year. In fact, Waddle hasn’t posted 1,000 receiving yards since 2023, so it’s curious as to why Payton relinquished such a premium draft choice for him.

In addition to the other receivers – Bryant has the most potential as a third-rounder from the 2025 NFL Draft – Nix will be able to continue working with Evan Engram and R.J. Harvey as receiving threats. Engram is a quality tight end who had some big games in 2025, but saw his snap count reduced as the year progressed. Harvey, meanwhile, caught 47 passes as a rookie. While Harvey was an effective pass-catching threat out of the backfield, he struggled as a rusher. Harvey has poor running vision, so he had issues finding the proper rushing lanes. J.K. Dobbins is better, but has severe problems remaining healthy. Fourth-round rookie Jonah Coleman is not as physically talented as Harvey or Dobbins, but he is better at finding open running lanes.

Denver’s offensive weapons will continue to benefit from a strong offensive line. All five starters return from last year. The best tandem up front is the duo of tackles, Garett Bolles and Mike McGlinchey. Bolles can commit one too many penalties at times, but is an outstanding blocker otherwise. McGlinchey missed four games in 2024, but was on the field every game last season. McGlinchey has been superb, but he turns 32 in August and could begin to regress due to age.

The top player in Denver’s blocking unit is guard Quinn Meinerz, a former third-round selection. At just 27, Meinerz has a very bright future ahead of him. The rest of the interior is comprised of guard Ben Powers and center Luke Wattenberg. The latter isn’t great by any means, but is coming off his best season as a pro. Powers, conversely, was limited to just eight games due to injury. He’s not a bad player, but is the weak link on the unit.

2026 Denver Broncos Defense:
Most NFL fans would agree that the Broncos had one of the best defenses in the NFL last season. Denver led the league in sacks, so it’s an easy statement to make. However, the Broncos were known to have a paper tiger defense, according to this publication. That declaration was made even before Trevor Lawrence shredded the Broncos in a convincing 34-20 victory just prior to Christmas. The Broncos surrendered 26 or more points on several occasions, including their near-upset loss to the Giants at home. Denver’s defense ranked just 12th in defensive EPA.

The Broncos are not even expected to be as good this year on defense because they suffered a huge loss. John Franklin-Myers isn’t a household name, but he’s one of the best five-techniques in the NFL. His absence will create a void on the defensive line that might be filled by third-round rookie Tyler Onyedim or perhaps underwhelming veteran Malcolm Roach. One of them will join terrific pass rusher Zach Allen and run-stuffer D.J. Jones on the three-man front.

Franklin-Myers’ 7.5 sacks will be missed, as he was third on the team in that category. Allen accumulated seven, as he and Franklin-Myers trailed Nik Bonitto’s 14 and Jonathon Cooper’s eight. Bonitto has emerged as one of the best players in the NFL. Cooper, meanwhile, is a former seventh-round selection who has made the most out of his career until this offseason when he was arrested twice in the same week, once for domestic violence allegations and then the second time for violating a restraining order. If Cooper is unavailable, Denver will have to turn to one of Jonah Elliss or Dondrea Tillman to pick up the slack. It’s safe to say that Denver will produce far less pressure if Cooper is unavailable.

One other player the Broncos definitely lost on defense was Dre Greenlaw. This departure, however, won’t be as impactful. This is because Justin Strnad emerged as an excellent starter in relief of the injured Greenlaw last year. Strnad was great in coverage and decent in run support, so he can play all three downs. Alex Singleton is the opposite of Strnad; he’s stout in run support, but can be beaten in coverage.

Of course, Denver’s best coverage player is Patrick Surtain II, one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL. Throwing at Surtain is impossible for most quarterbacks, so they tend to target the other outside cornerback Riley Moss, who is coming off a mediocre season. Nickel corner Ja’Quan McMillan fared much better.

At safety, the Broncos have a couple of talented players in Talanoa Hufanga and Brandon Jones. Hufanga has an extensive injury history, but managed to play all 17 games for the Broncos last season. Jones, meanwhile, is coming off a down year, but could rebound and play as well as he did in 2024.

2026 Denver Broncos Schedule and Intangibles:
The thin Denver air creates a hostile environment for opponents, which explains why it had an NFL-best 77-18 home record from 1995 to 2005. The team tailed off after that for a few years, but has since reestablished its great home-field advantage. In the Peyton Manning era, the Broncos were 32-6 as hosts, including the playoffs. Denver struggled as a host since Manning’s retirement, so we’ll see if it regains that with Sean Payton. The early results are promising, as Denver is 15-3 against the spread at home with Bo Nix at the helm.

Wil Lutz followed Payton from New Orleans to Denver. Lutz has done well with the Broncos. He was 28-of-32 last year, drilling 4-of-6 attempts from 50-plus.

Punter Jeremy Crawshaw, chosen in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, was just 21st in net punting last season, though he did a good job of pinning the opposition inside the 20.

The Broncos had an easy schedule last year, but that won’t be the case in 2026. They begin the year by playing against the Chiefs, Jaguars, Rams, 49ers, Chargers, and Seahawks. Five of those six teams made the playoffs in 2025, and the lone exception is the Chiefs. Denver’s schedule gets easier after that – opponents include the Cardinals, Panthers, Steelers, Dolphins, Jets, and Raiders twice – but then there are three difficult games to close out the year: Bills, Patriots, and Chargers.

2026 Denver Broncos Analysis: The Broncos certainly won’t win 14 games again this year, and they could have issues making the playoffs. There’s a chance Bo Nix won’t be 100 percent, so the offense could struggle. Defensively, they lost John Franklin-Myers and could be missing Jonathon Cooper because of his off-the-field issues. With a tougher schedule this year, the Broncos are prime candidates to regress to the mean.

NFL Draft Team Grade: B Grade

Goals Entering the 2026 NFL Draft: The Broncos don’t have a first-round pick, yet they have several positions they’d like to address. In no particular order, they want to find upgrades at tight end, running back, linebacker, and edge rusher.

2026 NFL Draft Accomplishments: Thanks to a couple of trades, the Broncos didn’t make a selection until the third day of the 2026 NFL Draft. They’re difficult to grade for that reason, but it must be noted that of their seven selections made on Day 3, only one scored worse than a “B” grade.

Denver spent the third day addressing its needs. It acquired a potential replacement for John Franklin-Myers with Tyler Onyedim. R.J. Harvey was then potentially upgraded via the Jonah Coleman selection. Justin Joly, chosen in the fifth round, could be the type of Joker tight end Sean Payton has been looking for during his tenure with the Broncos.

I can’t grade the Broncos very highly because the chances of them landing an impact player for 2026 are slim because of when they acquired their prospects. However, there’s definitely some promise to this draft class, and Denver did well with the limited resources it possessed entering the 2026 NFL Draft.

NFL Draft Individual Grades:

66. Tyler Onyedim, DL, Texas A&M – B Grade

This is a fine pick. The Broncos lost a valuable defensive lineman, so it makes sense for them to find a replacement. Tyler Onyedim doesn’t really produce much of a pass rush, but he’s stout against the run.

108. Jonah Coleman, RB, Washington – A Grade

Jonah Coleman is a quick running back with a strong build. I was a fan, and thought he could have gone as high as No. 64. R.J. Harvey was a huge disappointment last year, and so Coleman could be an upgrade.

111. Kage Casey, OT, Boise State – B+ Grade

The Broncos have to protect Bo Nix, and Kage Casey can begin his career as a swing tackle because he can play left and right tackle. I had Casey going at the end of the third round, so there’s a bit of value with this pick.

152. Justin Joly, TE, N.C. State – A+ Grade

The Broncos were interested in a tight end earlier, and they could have taken this tight end earlier. Justin Joly is a great athlete with outstanding hands, but he’s undersized and doesn’t block well. Still, he could fill Sean Payton’s Joker role and be a great weapon.

246. Miles Scott, S, Illinois – B+ Grade

Miles Scott is a physical safety with some decent instincts. He was seen as a sleeper by some. This is a solid selection by the Broncos.

256. Dallen Bentley, TE, Utah – C Grade

Dallen Bentley has plus size with good receiving ability, but he’s not a great athlete and doesn’t block well. There’s not much upside here, which is what you want in Round 7.

257. Red Murdock, LB, Buffalo – B+ Grade

Red Murdock is a strong tackler, but struggles to cover. He could potentially be a two-down linebacker down the road, but will have to make the team via special teams. I had him as a sixth-round pick, so this is a quality selection with the final pick of the 2026 NFL Draft.
