2026 Kansas City Chiefs Offense:
The Chiefs are often recognized for their explosive attack, but their offense has not met expectations in recent seasons. The Chiefs averaged 29.2, 28.2, 29.6, 28.2, and 35.3 points per game in Patrick Mahomes’ first five seasons as a starter, but that number dipped to 21.8 in 2023. That average was slightly better in 2024 (23.1), but it still paled in comparison to what Mahomes and the Chiefs were able to produce prior to 2023. Last year, prior to Mahomes’ injury, the Chiefs averaged just 23.4 points per game, so despite some changes they made to the offensive line, the Chiefs haven’t been able to replicate the dynamic offense they generated in Mahomes’ early years.

It seems unlikely that the Chiefs will be able to bounce back in 2026 for several reasons. One issue is Mahomes’ injury. Mahomes tore his ACL in Week 15 and may not be ready for the start of the season. If Mahomes can’t play, new backup Justin Fields will be the starter. Fields has talent, particularly with his legs. He’s never been coached up well in the NFL, so perhaps Andy Reid can get the most out of him, like he’s done with almost every quarterback he’s been paired with in the NFL.

Even if Mahomes can play in Week 1, he still has to deal with a miserable group of receivers. Rashee Rice is his best option, but Rice is returning from an offseason in which he had multiple off-the-field incidents and a knee procedure. Otherwise, Mahomes will be throwing to the pedestrian Tyquan Thornton, first-round bust Xavier Worthy, and decrepit tight end Travis Kelce. Mahomes had the third-worst completion percentage of any NFL quarterback when throwing 10-plus yards downfield to an open receiver, and that’s likely because he’s been paired with so many scrubs.

Mahomes’ offensive line is still a question mark. With Jawaan Taylor gone, the Chiefs will start Josh Simmons and Jaylon Moore at tackle. Simmons, who has an extensive injury history, had a mediocre rookie campaign but has loads of upside and could develop well if he can remain healthy. Meanwhile, Moore will take over as the full-time starter as a bookend to Simmons with Taylor gone. Moore isn’t a liability, but he’s not a great blocker by any means.

The strength of the Chiefs’ offensive line is in the interior. Creed Humphrey is one of the top centers in the NFL, while Trey Smith is an excellent guard. Kansas City had a great third member of the trio in Joe Thuney, but he is now with the Bears. Thuney’s replacement last year was Kingsley Suamataia, who had a mediocre 2025 campaign. While Suamataia wasn’t a glaring weakness, he certainly wasn’t the great blocker Thuney was.

One positive aspect of Kansas City’s offense is the improved running game. Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt were both shells of their former selves the past couple of seasons. Reigning Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker was signed to serve as a huge upgrade in the backfield.

2026 Kansas City Chiefs Defense:
With the offense sputtering throughout the past three seasons, the defense had to pull its weight. It did exactly that during the first two years, surrendering just 17.3 points per game in 2023 and then 20.4 points per contest the following year. However, things changed last season. The numbers say the Chiefs surrendered just 19.3 points per game, but they progressively got worse throughout the year. They had no chance at stopping the Cowboys on Thanksgiving, for example.

The biggest issue with the Chiefs was their pass defense. They ranked 23rd versus aerial attacks during the second half of the season. Their pass rush was very lackluster, with Chris Jones and George Karlaftis being the only players who logged more than 3.5 sacks. And it’s not like Jones and Karlaftis registered a ton of sacks; they tallied just 13 combined sacks, with Jones edging out Karlaftis, seven to six.

The Chiefs brought in some new defensive linemen to help. They signed Khyiris Tonga in free agency and then spent their second opening-round selection on Peter Woods. Tonga is a run stuffer who won’t assist with the pass rush. Woods might be able to, but as a late first-round pick, the odds are against that happening right away. Second-round edge rusher R Mason Thomas may be able to emerge as a starter across from Karlaftis. He’ll be competing with 2025 third-rounder Ashton Gillotte, who notched 1.5 sacks as a rookie.

The pass rush will have to improve to offset the losses in the secondary. Kansas City’s defensive backfield had issues last season, mostly because the pass rush didn’t offer any support. The Chiefs had quality defensive back talent, but that’s largely not the case anymore because the top two cornerbacks and best safety all departed this spring. With Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson gone, the Chiefs were forced into moving up for Mansoor Delane, who would not have been considered the best cornerback in the 2026 class had Jermod McCoy not been injured. Delane will start along with Nohl Williams and Kadar Kohou at cornerback. Kohou has displayed some upside as a slot cornerback, but has been injured frequently as a pro. Williams, meanwhile, had some bright moments as a third-round rookie last year, but doesn’t have much starting experience. The Chiefs also made a late signing by adding L’Jarius Sneed, who has struggled in recent years, but has good experience in Steve Spagnuolo’s system.

As mentioned, the Chiefs also lost their best safety, Bryan Cook. That will be a big loss, as Cook is considered one of the top safeties in the entire league. The Chiefs brought in Alohi Gilman as someone who will start alongside Chamarri Conner, who struggled last season. Gilman has been a mediocre starter for the Ravens and Chargers.

Kansas City suffered another loss to its defense when Leo Chenal departed. Now in Washington, Chenal is a stout run defender as a two-down player. Chenal may only be missed as a depth piece because the Chiefs still have a great tandem at linebacker with Nick Bolton and Drue Tranquill returning for another year. Bolton, in particular, is a fantastic defender.

2026 Kansas City Chiefs Schedule and Intangibles:
The Chiefs needed to bring back the Arrowhead magic that existed prior to 2007. Since that year, Kansas City was a dreadful 20-37 as a host heading into the 2014 campaign. However, Kansas City is now 85-29 at Arrowhead over the past 11 seasons, including a perfect 10-0 in 2024. That regressed to 5-4 in 2025.

Harrison Butker drew the ire of cat ladies more than a year ago, but there’s no denying his kicking talent. He was 33-of-35 in 2023 and 21-of-25 the following year. He was 33-of-38 in 2025. Harrison Butker aprons are available for sale by clicking the link.

Punter Matt Ariza finished in the middle of the pack in net punting, and did a fairly decent job of pinning the opposition inside the 20.

The Chiefs have a tougher schedule than most teams. While they get to beat up on the Cardinals, Jets, Dolphins, and Raiders twice, they also have to take on the Seahawks, Rams, 49ers, Bills, Patriots, and Bengals in addition to battling the Chargers and Broncos twice each.

2026 Kansas City Chiefs Analysis: Completely counting out the Chiefs would be a big mistake. As long as Patrick Mahomes is the quarterback, and Andy Reid is the head coach, they’ll always have a chance. However, Mahomes may not be quite himself this year because of the injury, and the roster itself has been depleted of talent. Kansas City will likely still be competitive, but the many holes on the roster could cause the team to once again miss the playoffs.

NFL Draft Team Grade: C Grade

Goals Entering the 2026 NFL Draft: It’s truly amazing how many needs the Chiefs have, considering that they were in the Super Bowl recently. Aside from their backfield, the Chiefs need to address everything. The Chiefs lost their entire secondary in the offseason, so they need to focus on that and the pass rush. However, helping Patrick Mahomes recover from his torn ACL is essential, whether it’s via a receiver, a tight end, or more offensive line help. 2026 NFL Draft Accomplishments: The Chiefs must have disagreed that they have so many needs because they used two resources, including a valuable third-round pick, to move up from No. 9 to 6 in order to secure Mansoor Delane. This was a vital mistake because the Chiefs couldn’t afford to squander so many resources when there were so many needs to address. Besides, there was a good chance Delane would have been available at the ninth pick. I know for a fact that the Redskins were not drafting him. The Saints may have, but the Chiefs could have just obtained another talented prospect like Caleb Downs, Jordyn Tyson (available if the Saints pick Delane), Francis Mauigoa, or Rueben Bain.

Kansas City rebounded with its remaining two picks that it had prior to Day 3, securing Peter Woods and R Mason Thomas to bolster the weak front seven. The Chiefs should’ve had another second-day choice, but they lost it in the ridiculous trade for Delane.

The Chiefs made some strong value picks on Day 3, namely Emmett Johnson and Garrett Nussmeier. Overall, however, this was an underwhelming draft class because the Chiefs weren’t able to address many of their needs because they surrendered too much in an unnecessary trade.

NFL Draft Individual Grades:

6. Mansoor Delane, CB, LSU – MILLEN Grade

The Chiefs traded up three spots for a player they easily could have taken at No. 9. Wow. Mansoor Delane is considered the top cornerback in this class, but only because Jermod McCoy isn’t healthy. McCoy is a better corner, making this a very strange pick. It’s not like the Chiefs didn’t have any other needs.

29. Peter Woods, DT, Clemson – B+ Grade

I didn’t like that the Chiefs traded up for Mansoor Delane, but I like this pick much more. Peter Woods is a talented, disruptive interior defensive lineman who easily could have gone in the 18-22 range. In fact, he would have made more sense at the 18th pick than Caleb Banks. The Chiefs are getting great value with Woods, who will be the successor for Chris Jones. We’ll have to see if Woods finally lives up to his potential, but there’s a ton of upside with this pick.

40. R Mason Thomas, DE/OLB, Oklahoma – B+ Grade

I’d say the Chiefs needed an edge rusher, but that would be unnecessary because they need almost everything. They struggled to get to the quarterback last year, so an edge rusher in the top two rounds makes sense. R Mason Thomas is a speedy edge rusher with good potential, so this is a solid pick.

109. Jadon Canady, CB, Oregon – B- Grade

Another cornerback for the Chiefs makes sense because they lost their entire secondary this offseason. However, there were better options. Jadon Canady is great in coverage, but is frail and struggles to tackle. I had him in the fifth.

161. Emmett Johnson, RB, Nebraska – A Grade

Emmett Johnson is a very agile running back with great vision. Pass protection is a concern, however. The Chiefs needed depth behind Kenneth Walker because Walker isn’t known as someone who can handle a full workload. I had Johnson in the third round, so I love this value.

176. Cyrus Allen, WR, Cincinnati – B Grade

Cyrus Allen is a terrific route runner with quality hands who can make plays after the catch. There are some durability concerns, however. Given how poor the Chiefs’ receiver group is, there’s a chance that Allen plays plenty of snaps sooner rather than later.

249. Garrett Nussmeier, QB, LSU – A+ Grade

Garrett Nussmeier has great arm talent, but really struggled last year. He was wincing in pain after almost every throw. It turns out that he has a dire injury issue, but there’s a chance he can overcome it, and if he does, the Chiefs might be able to develop him and eventually trade him to a team that needs a starter.
