2026 Minnesota Vikings Offense:
The Vikings had the reigning Super Bowl-winning quarterback on their roster in 2024, but they let him go. They did so because they believed strongly in J.J. McCarthy. This decision could end up costing many jobs in Minnesota, as McCarthy was arguably the worst starting quarterback in the NFL last year. McCarthy had a few nice moments, but he was so dreadful that the Vikings attempted to trade him to the Rams this offseason. They pursued a Joe Burrow trade, but ultimately settled for Kyler Murray. The former Arizona quarterback has largely been a failure thus far in his career, but he’s never had the great coaching that he’ll receive in Minnesota. Murray also tends to get injured often, so the Vikings may have to go back to McCarthy at some point this season.
Aside from the improved coaching, Murray will be able to benefit from a stronger offensive line than he saw in Arizona. The Vikings have one of the best tackle pairings in the NFL. Right tackle Brian O’Neill is coming off an amazing season. Christian Darrisaw is an elite blind-side protector when healthy, but he also tends to get injured often. Because of this, Minnesota acquired quality depth. They signed Ryan Van Demark and then spent a third-round pick on Caleb Tiernan. Perhaps one of them will fill in well if Darrisaw suffers another injury.
The Vikings’ blocking isn’t as good in the interior, though Will Fries had an exceptional 2024 campaign before regressing a bit last year. He and center Ryan Kelly were signed over from Indianapolis, but Kelly unexpectedly retired. Blake Brendel, who filled in when Kelly was injured last year, had a mediocre season, so at least he wasn’t a liability. Left guard Donovan Jackson was worse, but he was a rookie, so he could improve in his second year.
With better protection, Murray will be able to make greater use of Minnesota’s talented playmakers. This is something McCarthy could not do last season. Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson all had down years because of McCarthy’s incompetence. All three should rebound, particularly Jefferson, who is one of the best receivers in the NFL. Hockenson is also another year removed from his torn ACL, so he’ll be able to bounce back as well with a better quarterback.
Murray won’t have much of a running game to lean on, as the Vikings’ rushing attack is the weakest part of their offense. The oft-injured Aaron Jones is on the downside of his career, while Jordan Mason is just a mediocre runner at best. Minnesota spent a sixth-round pick on Demond Claiborne, who could be used as a receiving threat out of the backfield.
2026 Minnesota Vikings Defense:
The Vikings had severe offensive issues last year, yet were still able to produce a winning record. The reason for this was their outstanding stop unit. Defensive coordinator Brian Flores was a mastermind who devised some wicked game plans for opposing offenses. Flores, however, won’t be operating with a full arsenal this season.
Minnesota lost some key defenders during the offseason, including Jonathan Greenard. The talented edge player logged just three sacks last year, but led the team with 47 quarterback pressures. However, he was deemed to be a poor fit for the chemistry of the team, so the Vikings dealt him to the Eagles during the 2026 NFL Draft. With Greenard gone, the Vikings will have to rely more on Dallas Turner and Andrew Van Ginkel to generate heat on opposing passers. Turner led Minnesota with eight sacks in 2026, but had five fewer quarterback pressures than Greenard. However, Turner is a recent first-round pick and happens to be only 23, so the sky is the limit for him. Van Ginkel, meanwhile, doesn’t particularly specialize in pass rushing, but he’s an extremely versatile player who can do everything. He was sorely missed last year in the five games he missed due to injury.
The Vikings also lost a prominent player on their three-man defensive line, prompting them to spend two early draft choices on the area. Javon Hargrave is gone, though he’s an older player whose decline had already begun. He’ll still be missed unless Caleb Banks and Domonique Orange, chosen in the first and third rounds, respectively, can play well right away. Banks should be able to produce some quarterback pressure, while Orange is a run-stuffer. The best player on Minnesota’s defensive line is Jalen Redmond, who tallied six sacks and held up well against the run last year.
Of course, the most well-known defender to depart is Harrison Smith. The long-time Viking still played well last year, but at 37, he’s obviously no longer the perennial Pro Bowler he once was. Many speculated that the Vikings would draft athletic safety Dillon Thieneman as a replacement, but they passed on him in favor of Banks. Minnesota eventually selected a safety in the third round (Jakobe Thomas), but it’s unclear if he’ll be able to start this year. The favorites to get the nod in the opener are Joshua Metellus and Jay Ward. However, Metellus struggled last year, while Ward didn’t play very much. Theo Jackson will be around to compete for the starting job as well after being decent in relief last year.
There was some concern at cornerback as well, so the Vikings signed James Pierre away from the Steelers. Pierre was excellent down the stretch for Pittsburgh last year, but he’s a career backup, so it’s unclear if he can continue this level of play. The Vikings will be hoping that he can perform well opposite Isaiah Rodgers, who was Minnesota’s best cornerback last year. Byron Murphy, meanwhile, will continue to play in the slot. Murphy was a decent cornerback in the past, but had a down season.
Rounding out the defense, the Vikings will continue to start Blake Cashman and Eric Wilson at linebacker, though they drafted Jake Golday in the second round to eventually compete for playing time. They’ll be hoping Golday can provide an upgrade in pass coverage because that’s an area in which Cashman and Wilson struggle. Both are terrific in run support, however.
2026 Minnesota Vikings Schedule and Intangibles:
Minnesota’s home-field advantage has been tremendous during the past decade; the team is 75-40 as a host since 2012, but just 4-4 last year.
The Vikings endured kicking issues for years before they drafted Will Reichard in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. He was amazing last year, going 33-of-35, including 11-of-13 from 50-plus.
Ryan Wright finished 22nd in net punting in 2024, but improved to fourth in that regard last season.
The Vikings have a third-place schedule, and they get to battle every team in the NFC South. Their tough non-divisional games are against the Bills, Patriots, 49ers, and perhaps the Redskins if Jayden Daniels can rebound.

2026 Minnesota Vikings Analysis: The Vikings will be an interesting team to watch this year. If Kyler Murray can live up to his No. 1 overall billing with a superior coaching staff, and the offensive line can stay healthy for a change, they’ll be able to compete for a playoff spot. If the Seahawks could win the Super Bowl with Sam Darnold, perhaps Minnesota can make a deep run into the playoffs with Murray. However, the Vikings also have plenty of downside, given the injury history of Murray, Christian Darrisaw, and others. If J.J. McCarthy is forced into playing again, the Vikings certainly will have no chance.

They’ll also need to add talent at cornerback and safety. Quarterback remains a question mark, so perhaps a mid-round pick can be used on a future replacement if J.J. McCarthy is to be traded. Regardless of who the quarterback is, he’ll need a better center in front of him.
2026 NFL Draft Accomplishments: I heard from one team during the draft that said the defensive tackle class was “trash” this year. The Vikings, apparently, disagreed, because they spent two picks in the first three rounds on defensive tackles. Both of these players were reaches, particularly Caleb Banks, who was flunked medically by some teams. I understand that defensive tackle was a need for the Vikings, but they should have recognized the lack of talent at the position this year.
Banks and Dominique Orange weren’t the only reaches. The Vikings spent a second-round pick on third-round linebacker Jake Golday. Another instance of reaching was when the Vikings used a late third-round selection on Jakobe Thomas, whom I had slotted in the middle of Day 3.
It wasn’t all bad for the Vikings. For instance, third-round tackle Caleb Tiernan provided solid value, while fifth-round cornerback Charles Demmings was a nice bargain. However, the Vikings didn’t really make much of an improvement to their roster. In fact, one could argue that they are now way worse than they were entering the 2026 NFL Draft because they traded Jonathan Greenard and didn’t replace him at all. It’d be one thing if they received a nice haul for Greenard, but that wasn’t the case, as two third-round picks was not enough for someone as talented as Greenard.

NFL Draft Individual Grades:
18. Caleb Banks, DT, Florida – C Grade
Caleb Banks got hurt during the pre-draft process, so it’s nice to see that he wasn’t dinged for that. This still seems too early for Banks, but I don’t hate the pick. The Vikings had a major weakness on the defensive front that had to be addressed. Still, bigger defensive tackles tend to go later than this usually, so I think the Vikings could have gotten more value with this selection.
51. Jake Golday, LB, Cincinnati – C- Grade
I’m not a fan of this pick. Jake Golday is a big and fast linebacker, but he doesn’t have good instincts, so he’ll be out of position often. I had him in the third round, so this is a slight reach.
82. Dominique Orange, DT, Iowa State – C- Grade
Dominique Orange is a big nose tackle with work ethic concerns. I would worry about him getting very fat and eating himself out of the NFL. If not, he’ll be able to help against the run, but won’t give anything in the pass rush.
97. Caleb Tiernan, OT, Northwestern – A Grade
I had Caleb Tiernan going at the beginning of the third round, so I like this value for the Vikings. Tiernan can play left and right tackle, which is perfect for the Vikings because Christian Darrisaw is always hurt, while Brian O’Neill is entering his contract year.
98. Jakobe Thomas, S, Miami – C Grade
Here’s the safety everyone thought the Vikings were going to draft. Except, Jakobe Thomas is not quite Dillon Thieneman. Thomas is a lengthy safety with good ball skills, but struggles to tackle. I had him in the middle of Day 3, so this isn’t a very exciting pick.
159. Max Bredeson, FB, Michigan – B Grade
Max Bredeson is a tough run-blocking fullback. The Vikings had issues with their ground attack last year, so Bredeson should help.
163. Charles Demmings, CB, Stephen F. Austin – B+ Grade
Charle Demmings has good height and potential, but was flagged too often. Cornerback was a need, and perhaps Brian Flores can get Demmings to play his best because there’s definitely a lot of upside with him.
198. Demond Claiborne, RB, Wake Forest – A Grade
Demond Claiborne is a smaller back, but is a gritty and shifty runner. I’m a fan of Claiborne, and I thought he could have easily been chosen much earlier than this. The Vikings don’t have much of a running game, so Claiborne could see some playing time.
235. Gavin Gerhardt, C, Cincinnati – B Grade
The Vikings needed a center because of retirement. Gavin Gerhardt is a prospect with tons of starts. He’s a good run blocker and has plus leadership skills.
