Live 2017 NFL Draft Grades: Round 7

These Live 2017 NFL Draft Grades will be posted minutes after each pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Follow @walterfootball for updates.

2017 NFL Draft Grades - Round: Picks 1-16 | Picks 17-32 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | NFL Draft Team Grades

  1. Minnesota Vikings: Stacy Coley, WR, Miami: C- Grade
Stacy Coley was productive at Miami, but teams questioned his effort and passion for football. I wouldn’t have wanted to draft someone like that at any point. This might end up being the worst pick in the seventh round for that reason.

  2. Minnesota Vikings: Ifeadi Odenigbo, DE, Northwestern: B+ Grade
This Minnesota selection is much better. Ifeadi Odenigbo displayed terrific athleticism in pre-draft workouts, and he also happened to be productive at Northwestern. It wouldn’t surprise me if he became a solid contributor at some point for the Vikings.

  3. Oakland Raiders: Shalom Luani, S, Washington State: C+ Grade
The Raiders can say hello to a new special-teamer of theirs in Shalom Luani. The Washington State product struggled with tackling in college, and he doesn’t have the great athleticism for it, so perhaps Oakland will be saying goodbye quite soon.

  4. Jacksonville Jaguars: Jalen Myrick, CB, Minnesota: A+ Grade
This might end up being my favorite pick in the seventh frame. Jalen Myrick was slotted in the fourth or fifth round of all of my mock drafts. He has very good athleticism, and he was productive in college. He also offers some great special-teams ability to boot. Even though he’s a seventh-rounder, I’ll be mildly surprised if he doesn’t make Jacksonville’s roster.

  5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Steve Tu’ikolovatu, DT, USC: B Grade
The downside with Steve Tu’ikolovatu is that he turns 26 soon, and he’s also extremely unathletic. However, the latter part isn’t very important because his role, if he makes the pros, will be to stuff the run, which is the only thing he’s very good at doing. The seventh round is the time to select specific specialists like that, even if they’re going to need adult diapers in the near future.

  6. Cleveland Browns: Zane Gonzalez, K, Arizona State: B+ Grade
For those who know little about Zane Gonzalez, the Arizona State kicker drilled seven of his nine attempts from beyond 50 in 2016. The Browns would’ve won two games had they owned a better kicker, so Gonzalez will surely be an upgrade.

  7. Los Angeles Chargers: Isaac Rochell, DE/DT, Notre Dame: B Grade
I’m sure 3-4 teams, even those in Milan and Minsk, would’ve appreciated this pick of Isaac Rochell. However, I’m not sure where he plays for the Chargers, who are moving to a 4-3. My guess is he’ll be a rotational, interior pass-rusher. That’s my prediction with Rochell, as Rochell has solid athleticism and could be a decent contributor.

  8. Seattle Seahawks: David Moore, WR, East Central Oklahoma: C+ Grade
Here’s the home run pick Seattle likes to take, as David Moore from East Central Oklahoma (how can something be East Central?) had solid testing numbers. However, there were better options available in the seventh round. Moore could’ve been signed as a UDFA in all likelihood.

  9. Tennessee Titans: Josh Carraway, DE/OLB, TCU: B Grade
I had Josh Carraway in the fifth round of one of my mock drafts, but he was in the seventh frame (or out of it) otherwise. Carraway was productive at TCU, but didn’t test very well. That hurt, given that he’s on the small side (6-3, 242). Perhaps he can emerge as a situational pass-rusher at some point.

  10. Dallas Cowboys: Joey Ivie, DT, Florida: C+ Grade
I didn’t have Joey Ivie as being drafted in my mock, but he was close at least. Still, it’s unlikely that he’ll make Dallas’ roster, though I do understand why the Cowboys would go after defensive line depth.

  11. San Francisco 49ers: Adrian Colbert, CB, Miami: C Grade
I had neither talked to anyone nor seen a report that Adrian Colbert would be drafted. He wasn’t productive at Miami, but he did run a 4.38 at his pro day, so at least that’s something. It’s doubtful Colbert makes the 53-man roster.

  12. Washington Redskins: Josh Harvey-Clemons, ILB, Louisville: A- Grade
Had Josh Harvey-Clemons been clean off the field, he may have gone in the second round. Unfortunately, he has failed multiple drug tests throughout his collegiate career. Still, I had him in the fifth frame, so I think he offers very good value at this spot. Why not take a chance on him at No. 230?

  13. Oakland Raiders: Jylan Ware, OT, Alabama State: B+ Grade
Here’s another “swing for the fences” pick. Not much is known about Jylan Ware, aside from his unbelivable 4.99 40 time for a player at his size (6-8, 317). He’s worth taking a chance on this late.

  14. Minnesota Vikings: Elijah Lee, LB, Kansas State: A- Grade
Elijah Lee is a bit undersized (6-3, 229), and he’ll be a liability against the run, but he projects as a solid coverage linebacker in sub packages. I had him going in the fifth round, so I like the value the Vikings are getting in the final frame.

  15. Carolina Panthers: Harrison Butker, K, Georgia Tech: C- Grade
We didn’t have Harrison Butker in our kicking rankings, so I don’t know what to make of this. Surely, the Panthers could’ve signed him as a UDFA. I don’t understand the logic behind this selection.

  16. Los Angeles Rams: Ejuan Price, DE/OLB, Pittsburgh: B+ Grade
Ejuan Price is a mildly athletic pass-rushing specialist who was very productive at Pittsburgh, when healthy. The problem? He’s had a myriad of injuries throughout his career, so he’s difficult to trust. However, the seventh round is a nice time to take a chance on someone like this.

  17. Washington Redskins: Joshua Holsey, CB, Auburn: C Grade
Joshua Holsey is a limited player with multiple knee injuries in his past. This isn’t a horrible pick, but the Redskins could’ve done better.

  18. Tennessee Titans: Brad Seaton, OT, Villanova: B Grade
Brad Seaton garnered a lot of interest late in the draft process, and I had him projected to go around this range. This pick makes sense to me, as Seaton has the potential to be a solid backup tackle in the NFL.

  19. Miami Dolphins: Isaiah Ford, WR, Virginia Tech: B Grade
Isaiah Ford has speed concerns – he ran a 4.6 at the combine – but I’m still shocked he lasted this long. I had him in the fourth round, so I love this pick. Ford battled injuries in college, but he makes the most difficult catches look easy. He’s talented and has lots of potential.

  20. Green Bay Packers: Devante Mays, RB, Utah State: C Grade
I liked Green Bay’s other running back picks, but not this one. Devante Mays has some upside – he posted a 40.5-inch vertical – but I didn’t have him anywhere close to being drafted. The Packers could’ve gotten him as a UDFA.

  21. Dallas Cowboys: Noah Brown, WR, Ohio State: B- Grade
Noah Brown made a huge mistake by declaring early, falling all the way to the middle of the seventh round. He had very little production at Ohio State, and he doesn’t have intriguing athleticism at all, so it’s not a surprise that he fell this far. He’s going to regret his decision for a very long time, as I’ll be surprised if he makes Dallas’ 53-man roster. I don’t mind taking a chance on him, but it’s disappointing to see this happen.

  22. Jacksonville Jaguars: Marquez Williams, FB, Miami: B Grade
I can’t say I’m surprised that Tom Coughlin added a fullback to pair with Leonard Fournette. I have no issues at all with this selection.

  23. Tenessee Titans: Khalfani Muhammad, RB, California: C Grade
I’m not sure where Khalfani Muhammad fits with the Titans. He’s not really an offensive football player, as he is a track star, and he also struggled on special teams during his time at California. I don’t see him cracking the roster.

  24. Oakland Raiders: Elijah Hood, RB, North Carolina: A- Grade
Elijah Hood is not exactly the new sheriff in town because Marshawn Lynch was signed to be the new starter, but Hood has the potential to be the top back down the road. I had Hood slotted in the fifth round, so I like this value. Hood isn’t very athletic, but he’s a powerful between-the-tackles carrier.

  25. Houston Texans: Kyle Fuller, C, Baylor: A+ Grade
The Texans have an excellent scouting department, as proven by their tendency to hit late-round picks and UDFA signings with high frequency. Kyle Fuller could be another hit, as I had him projected in the fourth round. Fuller’s tape is very good, and he has great length for an interior lineman.

  26. Oakland Raiders: Treyvon Hester, DT, Toledo: B+ Grade
The Steelers showed interest in Treyvon Hester, but the Raiders broke their cross-country rivals’ hearts by snatching him off the board. The Raiders have such a need at defensive tackle that Hester could see playing time soon as a situational pass-rusher.

  27. Minnesota Vikings: Jack Tocho, CB, N.C. State: B- Grade
I didn’t have Jack Tocho in my mock draft, but I considered him when I generated my seventh round. You can never have enough cornerback depth, and the Vikings are getting a player with leadership skills who happens to fit their scheme.

  28. Dallas Cowboys: Jordan Carrell, DT, Colorado: B- Grade
Jordan Carrell tested well at his pro day, which is why Dallas drafted him. His production was just OK, not great, at Colorado. It might be difficult for Carrell to make the roster, but perhaps he’ll emerge in a couple of years after being on the practice squad.

  29. Green Bay Packers: Malachi Dupre, WR, LSU: A+ Grade
It’s crazy that Malachi Dupre dropped this far. I’ve had Dupre slotted in the third round pretty consistently, though I did move him into the fourth frame at the end. There are some separation questions with Dupre, but one thing that is for certain is that at 6-foot-3, he’s a vertical threat in the end zone. Davante Adams will be a free agent after 2017, and the Packers could have Dupre replace him in 2018.

  30. Pittsburgh Steelers: Keion Adams, DE/OLB, Western Michigan: B Grade
Keion Adams wasn’t in my mock, but I considered him for the seventh round, so he fits the range. Even though the Steelers selected T.J. Watt in the first round, it doesn’t hurt to add more pass-rushing depth.

  31. Seattle Seahawks: Chris Carson, RB, Oklahoma State: B Grade
As mentioned earlier, the Seahawks tend to swing for the fences in the final couple of rounds, and this is another example of that. Chris Carson is highly athletic and possesses great upside. I had him going in the seventh round, so the range makes sense. He wasn’t productive at Oklahoma State, but the potential is there for that to change.

  32. Detroit Lions: Pat O’Connor, DE, Eastern Michigan: C+ Grade
I didn’t have Pat O’Connor on my board, so I’m not a big fan of this pick. I don’t hate it though, as O’Connor has great leadership skills and could contribute on special teams.

  33. Cincinnati Bengals: Mason Schreck, TE, Buffalo: B- Grade
I’m sure the Bengals aren’t trying to troll their fans by selecting a tight end every year, but Mason Schreck has above-average athleticism and could compete for a roster spot. It’ll be tough for him to beat out the players behind Tyler Eifert, however.

  34. Cleveland Browns: Matt Dayes, RB, N.C. State: A- Grade
I had Matt Dayes going to the Browns in the sixth round, so there’s some value here with the penultimate pick of the 2017 NFL Draft. Dayes is a change-of-pace, third-down back with good pass-protection skills. The Browns coached him in the Senior Bowl, so it’s nice that they’re familiar with him.

  35. Denver Broncos: Chad Kelly, QB, Ole Miss: A- Grade
Chad Kelly has second-round ability, and he may have even snuck into the first round had he been clean. Unfortunately, Kelly has dealt with off-the-field problems and a myriad of injuries. Kelly, however, possessed too much ability to go undrafted, so I slotted him at the bottom of the sixth frame. The Broncos took him later than expected, so I think they’re getting good value. Kelly is young, so perhaps he can turn his life around before it’s too late.
