2017 NFL Draft Grades - Round: Picks 1-16 | Picks 17-32 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | NFL Draft Team Grades
-
Green Bay Packers: Vince Biegel, LB, Wisconsin: B+ Grade
Vince Biegel seems like a nice pick for the Packers. They’ve needed inside linebacker help seemingly forever, and he could finally fill that void. He could also rush the passer in a pinch. I had Biegel going around this range, so Green Bay deserves a good grade.

-
Minnesota Vikings: Jaleel Johnson, DT, Iowa: B+ Grade
Make that two solid picks to start off the fourth round. The Vikings had to address defensive tackle with Sharrif Floyd’s future in question. Jaleel Johnson is a solid 4-3 nose tackle who can stuff the run very well. I had him going later in the fourth round, so the range is right.
-
Jacksonville Jaguars: Dede Westbrook, WR, Oklahoma: C Grade
Dede Westbrook probably would’ve been a second-round pick if he didn’t have off-the-field issues. He also interviewed extremely poorly at the combine. I think he’s too much of a risk in the fourth round, but perhaps he’ll grow up and become a solid slot receiver for the Jaguars.
-
Seattle Seahawks: Tedric Thompson, S, Colorado: B- Grade
Tedric Thompson was a fifth-round pick for me, so this is a slight reach, but we’re in the third day, so that’s not a big deal. Thompson is not a good athlete, but he has positive instincts, so he could pan out. It’s not a surprise Seattle selected a safety here; I thought that could’ve happened much earlier.
-
Chicago Bears: Eddie Jackson, S, Alabama: B Grade
The Bears moved up five spots for this selection, and the Bears finally get their safety. Better late than never, I guess. Eddie Jackson is an instinctive safety who has special-teams ability. Unfortunately, he has injury concerns. He’s worth the risk in the fourth round, however.
-
Los Angeles Chargers: Rayshawn Jenkins, S, Miami: C Grade
I had Rayshawn Jenkins going in the seventh round, so I’m not a big fan of this selection. I can see why the Chargers picked him, however. Jenkins is a very good athlete and has strong upside. He also fills a need, but happens to be a project.
-
Washington Redskins: Samaje Perine, RB, Oklahoma: A Grade
I had Samaje Perine bouncing around the second and third rounds, so I love the value here atop Round 4. Perine also fills a need, as the Redskins just had Robert Kelley at running back. Perine isn’t an explosive runner, but he’s a solid back who catches the ball well.
-
Arizona Cardinals: Dorian Johnson, G, Pittsburgh: A- Grade
Dorian Johnson would’ve been a likely second-round pick had he not dealt with any injury concerns. Unfortunately, he has a liver issue, and some teams had him off the board as a result. However, he’s very much worth the risk in the fourth round. Arizona will have a solid starter if Johnson can stay on the field.
-
Cincinnati Bengals: Carl Lawson, DE/OLB, Auburn: A Grade
Carl Lawson had a chance to be a first-round pick had it not been for multiple injuries. Unfortunately, those are a concern. If Lawson can stay healthy, he’ll be a terrific edge rusher for the Bengals, filling a big need. That’s a huge “if,” however, but I think he’s worth the risk here.
-
Los Angeles Rams: Josh Reynolds, WR, Texas A&M: A- Grade
Josh Reynolds was an underrated player coming out of Texas A&M, as he was a productive receiver who tested well. Reynolds needs to gain some weight to avoid injury, but it seems like he’ll be a quality wideout for the Rams.
-
Philadelphia Eagles: Mack Hollins, WR, North Carolina: B Grade
It’s no surprise that the Eagles drafted a receiver, as both Alshon Jeffery and Jordan Matthews are impending free agents after this season. I had Mack Hollins taken in the fifth round, but this isn’t a big reach. Hollins is a huge receiver (6-4, 221) with some decent speed, but he has struggled to stay healthy. If it weren’t for durability concerns, he could’ve been chosen on Day 2.
-
Chicago Bears: Tarik Cohen, RB, North Carolina A&T: FLY, KIELBASA, FLY MILLEN Grade
The Bears had an awful draft heading into Day 3, and that has continued, apparently. Tarik Cohen was a late-round prospect at best, and I had him as a UDFA. Cohen is a very, very poor man’s Darren Sproles, but may not make the roster. I’m not sure what Chicago is doing.
-
Minnesota Vikings: Ben Gedeon, LB, Michigan: B- Grade
It’s no surprise the Vikings are selecting a linebacker, as they needed a replacement for Chad Greenway. Ben Gedeon is not indestructible as one might think, but he was productive at Michigan, albeit in 14 starts. He’s an average athlete, so he projects as a potential solid backup or low-end starter.
-
San Francisco 49ers: Joe Williams, RB, Utah: D Grade
After a hot start, John Lynch has cooled off. I’m not sure why he traded up for Joe Williams. The Utah prospect is already 24, and he has some off-the-field issues. He was arrested for credit card theft and then quit the team last year. Williams is talented and fits the offense, but he’s a huge risk.
-
Baltimore Ravens: Nico Siragusa, G, San Diego State: A+ Grade
This might be the best pick in the fourth round, though that award could go to the team that selects Desmond King. Siragusa could’ve been chosen in the second round. He’s a tough, smart, productive guard with some great athleticism. It would not surprise me if he makes the Pro Bowl at some point.
-
Washington Redskins: Montae Nicholson, S, Michigan State: B+ Grade
Montae Nicholson was drawing consideration from another team in the fourth round, so I believe the range to be correct. He fills a need for the Redskins, who had to add a safety to potentially start in a year or two.
-
Detroit Lions: Jalen Reeves-Maybin, LB, Tennessee: C Grade
I’m shocked the Lions selected a player with a poor 3-cone time. Jalen Reeves-Maybin barely played last year because of a shoulder injury, so I expected him to go later on Day 3. This seems like a reach, though not an egregious one. Reeves-Maybin seems like a career special-teamer.
-
Los Angeles Rams: Samson Ebukam, DE/OLB, Eastern Washington: D Grade
The Rams just moved up 16 spots to select a sixth-round prospect. That’s their drafting inteptitude in a nutshell. They and the Bears have really struggled this weekend. Samson Ebukam has great upside with his incredible athleticism, but he’s a big-time project.
-
Cleveland Browns: Howard Wilson, CB, Houston: B+ Grade
Howard Wilson has nice size and tested well at the combine. He has great instincts despite not having much experience in college. Wilson fits the range, and he potentially fills a need as well.
-
Detroit Lions: Michael Roberts, TE, Toledo: B Grade
Michael Roberts was very productive at Toledo this past season, but doesn’t have much experience beyond that. He’s also a poor blocker, and he didn’t test well at the combine. Roberts makes sense here in the fourth round, however, as he could emerge as a reliable pass-catcher for Matthew Stafford.
-
Cincinnati Bengals: Josh Malone, WR, Tennessee: C+ Grade
The Bengals were expected to go after two receivers, given their dire need at the position. Josh Malone is much different than John Ross, as he’s not explosive and struggles to separate. However, he’s a big wideout with deep speed, so maybe he’ll pan out. I would’ve taken him a round later.
-
Oakland Raiders: David Sharpe, OT, Florida: A Grade
I’m shocked David Sharpe has lasted this long. We were told by a team that they were going to consider him in the second round, but they made other upgrades to the offensive line. I had Sharpe in the third frame even though he tested poorly athletically. Sharpe could become a powerful run-blocker, perhaps emerging as Oakland’s starting right tackle.
-
Houston Texans: Julie’n Davenport, OT, Bucknell: A Grade
I had Julie’n Davenport going to the Texans in the third round several days prior to the NFL Draft, so I definitely like the value they’re getting with him in the fourth round. Davenport is an athletic, lengthy tackle, but lacks strength and happens to be a project. Still, he potentially fills a huge need at right tackle.
-
New England Patriots: Deatrich Wise, DE, Arkansas: A Grade
I had Deatrich Wise going four picks before this, so the range is right. Wise has been very inconsistent throughout his collegiate career because of a poor motor. However, he’s long and athletic, and he possesses upside. He potentially fills a need, as the Patriots needed another defensive end.
-
Philadelphia Eagles: Donnel Pumphrey, RB, San Diego State: C Grade
Earlier in the fourth round, the Bears selected a very, very poor man’s Darren Sproles. Donnel Pumphrey is just a poor man’s Darren Sproles. Pumphrey tested poorly at the combine, but was highly productive at San Diego State. I had him going in the fifth round, so I’m not a big fan of the Eagles moving up for him.
-
Dallas Cowboys: Ryan Switzer, WR, North Carolina: C- Grade
Ryan Switzer was like the college football version of Cole Beasley last year, but he’s not a projection like Beasley for the NFL, as he tested very poorly athletically. However, he could become a dynamic special-teamer for the Cowboys. I had him in the seventh round, but Switzer could score some touchdowns as a returner.
-
Green Bay Packers: Jamaal Williams, RB, BYU: B- Grade
Jamaal Williams is not going to run away from anyone, but he’s a powerful back who could become a solid goal-line contributor in a platoon. I had Williams in the fifth round, so the range is close to being correct. However, there were other running backs I would’ve chosen over Williams, including Marlon Mack and Jeremy McNichols.
-
Pittsburgh Steelers: Joshua Dobbs, QB, Tennessee: B+ Grade
And finally, the Landry Jones era is over. Joshua Dobbs didn’t emerge as the first-round prospect Todd McShay expected him to be, but Dobbs did legitimately get some second-day buzz. Dobbs is a very smart quarterback, but doesn’t possess much ball velocity. Still, he projects to be a better backup than Jones, who has been the worst quarterback in the entire NFL for quite some time.
-
Atlanta Falcons: Sean Harlow, G, Oregon State: C+ Grade
The Falcons had to fill a big void at guard, but I’m not sure Sean Harlow is the answer. He’s a tough blocker, but has lacking athleticism and sub-par size. On the bright side, he’s versatile, as he can play tackle or center in a pinch. He’ll be a quality backup, but probably not much else.
-
Indianapolis Colts: Zach Banner, G, USC: C Grade
I had the Giants selecting Zach Banner three picks later than this, so it makes sense from a range perspective. However, the fit isn’t ideal. Andrew Luck needs blockers who can pass protect, and Banner can’t do that. He’s a powerful run-blocker, but he’s way too slow and won’t be able to shield the quarterback.
-
Cincinnati Bengals: Ryan Glasgow, DT, Michigan: B- Grade
I slotted Ryan Glasgow in the fifth round, so he makes sense at the end of the fourth frame. Glasgow tested extremely poorly athletically, but was very productive at Michigan. He could end up being a solid rotational lineman for the Bengals, but probably won’t ever be a decent starter.
-
Kansas City Chiefs: Jehu Chesson, WR, Michigan: B Grade
Jehu Chesson was a mid-fifth-rounder in my mock draft. This is a bit early for him, but the Chiefs traded down to acquire him, so that helps. Kansas City had to find another receiver with Jeremy Maclin’s time coming to an end soon with the team. Chesson has the athletic upside to emerge as a starter one day, and he was also productive at Michigan.
-
New York Giants: Wayne Gallman, RB, Clemson: B- Grade
Wayne Gallman made his debut in my mock draft as a second-round pick for the Giants back in September. He has fallen steadily since, and he ended as a fifth-rounder. Gallman catches the ball well, but doesn’t really have any other positive attributes. He really needs to improve his pass-protection skills to get on the field.
-
New York Jets: Chad Hansen, WR, California: A- Grade
I thought Chad Hansen could potentially be chosen in the third round, so I like this value, and Hansen obviously fills a need with Brandon Marshall gone. Hansen was a productive receiver at California who made acrobatic catches, but his speed is a major question mark.
-
Houston Texans: Carlos Watkins, DT, Clemson: A- Grade
The Texans wanted to add an interior pass-rushing specialist, and Carlos Watkins did get to the quarterback on occasion in Clemson with 14 career sacks. Watkins is a solid prospect who could’ve been chosen in the third round without any complaints. He’s not consistent, but as a rotational player, that’s not as big of an issue.
-
Indianapolis Colts: Marlon Mack, RB, South Florida: A Grade
I’ve had the highly athletic Marlon Mack slotted in the third round pretty consistently, though I did have him in the second frame on occasion. He provides great value at the end of the fourth frame. He could potentially emerge as Indianapolis’ starting running back once Frank Gore moves on.
-
Indianapolis Colts: Grover Stewart, DT, Albany State: B- Grade
I had Grover Stewart in the seventh round, but I don’t mind a home-run selection like this at any point on the third day. Stewart is huge (6-5, 334) and has tremendous athleticism for someone at his size. He has the potential to become a solid starter one day, but his floor is pretty low as well.
