Live 2014 NFL Draft Grades: Round 5

These Live 2014 NFL Draft Grades will be posted minutes after each pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Follow @walterfootball for updates.

2014 NFL Draft Grades - Round: Picks 1-16 | Picks 17-32 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | Team Grades
  1. Philadelphia Eagles: Taylor Hart, DE/DT, Oregon: B Grade
I figured the Eagles would pick Taylor Hart, but in the sixth round. I wouldn’t call it a reach though because Hart fell because of injury concerns. He could develop into a starter for Philadelphia, a team that had to find another defensive lineman.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

  2. Washington Redskins: Ryan Grant, WR, Tulane: C Grade
The Redskins are stacked at receiver, so I would have liked to have seen the Redskins continue to address their abysmal defense. Ryan Grant fits this range – I had him at the bottom of the fourth round – but I don’t really see where he fits in.

  3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Kadeem Edwards, G, Tennessee State: C+ Grade
The Buccaneers don’t need a tackle, as some NFL analysts have stated. They did need to find a guard though. Kadeem Edwards is a slight reach here, but it’s the fifth round, so it’s not a huge deal.

  4. Jacksonville Jaguars: Telvin Smith, OLB, Florida State: A Grade
Wow, Telvin Smith fell far. He was projected as a third-rounder prior to testing positive at the Combine. We know of two teams that removed him off their board, so it’s not a huge surprise that he dropped into Round 5. But the Jaguars are getting great value while filling a need at linebacker. Their fans have to be happy about this.

  5. Minnesota Vikings: David Yankey, G/OT, Stanford: B+ Grade
David Yankey was once seen as a possible first-round prospect – one known analyst declared that he would be the first guard chosen in the draft – but the Stanford product fell because of poor play this past season. I still think the Vikings are getting good value here, and Yankey could potentially challenge to start at left guard.

  6. Dallas Cowboys: Devin Street, WR, Pittsburgh: B Grade
Someone stop the presses because Jerry Jones didn’t reach for a change. The Cowboys wanted another receiver after losing Miles Austin-Jones, so this selection makes sense.

  7. Atlanta Falcons: Ricardo Allen, CB, Purdue: B+ Grade
Ricardo Allen could have been chosen a bit earlier than this, so I like this selection. The Falcons had to address their cornerback depth, so this is a pretty solid choice.

  8. Caroina Panthers: Bene Benwikere, CB, San Jose State: C+ Grade
The Panthers continue to address their secondary; they needed to find another cornerback in the wake of losing Captain Munnerlyn to the Vikings. I’m not sure they needed to trade up for Bene Benwikere though, as I think this is slightly early for him.

  9. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Kevin Pamphile, OT, Purdue: D Grade
A starting tackle wasn’t needed, but the Buccaneers had to find depth behind Anthony Collins and Demar Dotson. Kevin Pamphile might be able to eventually emerge as a decent backup, but this is just too early for him. Throw in the fact that Tampa moved up for him, and I don’t like this selection very much.

  10. San Francisco 49ers: Aaron Lynch, DE/OLB, South Florida: C Grade
There are major character concerns with Aaron Lynch that I can’t get into, and I know that one team wasn’t even going to consider signing him as an undrafted free agent. I don’t like this pick, but I wouldn’t say it’s terrible. Lynch is talented, but the 49ers could have probably obtained him later.

  11. Tennessee Titans: Avery Williamson, ILB, Kentucky: C Grade
This is too early for Avery Williamson, but I can’t say I’m surprised that the Titans are picking an inside linebacker out of the SEC. The position was a big need, especially with a new 3-4 scheme being installed. Wesley Woodyard was signed, but depth is needed.

  12. New York Giants: Nat Berhe, S, San Diego State: C- Grade
I didn’t think Nat Berhe would be drafted, so I can’t give this a good grade. The Giants are at least addressing a big need though. They needed a safety in the wake of Will Hill’s most recent suspension.

  13. Buffalo Bills: Cyril Richardson, G/OT, Baylor: B- Grade
Cyril Richardson did not look like a draftable prospect in the Senior Bowl, but he has decent talent and could emerge as a quality backup for the Bills. Buffalo could be in trouble if he starts though.

  14. New York Jets: Jeremiah George, ILB, Iowa State: D Grade
Remember when I said that the Jets don’t understand how value works in the NFL Draft? This is yet another example. Jeremiah George was not a draftable prospect, and there were so many better inside linebackers available like Shayne Skov and Yawin Smallwood. Inside linebacker was a need, but this is a mega reach.

  15. Miami Dolphins: Arthur Lynch, TE, Georgia: B Grade
The Dolphins had to find an intermediate target for Ryan Tannehill. Arthur Lynch makes sense in the fifth round. This isn’t a great pick, but it makes a lot of sense.

  16. Denver Broncos: Lamin Barrow, LB, LSU: B Grade
The Broncos really wanted C.J. Mosley, but he didn’t make it to their first-round pick. Better late than never for a linebacker, I guess. Lamin Barrow was viewed as a fifth-round prospect, so this is a logical selection.

  17. Pittsburgh Steelers: Shaq Richardson, CB, Arizona: B+ Grade
Shaq Richardson was seen by some as a fourth-rounder, so this is decent value. Richardson is a tall corner, which Pittsburgh likes, and he happens to fill a huge need on the roster. The Steelers had to improve this area earlier.

  18. Detroit Lions: Caraun Reid, DT, Princeton: B+ Grade
Caraun Reid could have gone in the third round, and no one would have complained very much. The Lions are getting very good value, and it’s not a surprise that they’re taking a defensive tackle. They said they wanted to pick someone who could perhaps push the lethargic Nick Fairley.

  19. Jacksonville Jaguars: Chris Smith, DE/OLB, Arkansas: B+ Grade
Most mocks had the Jaguars picking Khalil Mack, but it made more sense for the team to wait to obtain their LEO because they have Gus Bradley to coach that player up. Bradley will get the most out of Smith, who could have been chosen a bit earlier than this.

  20. Arizona Cardinals: Ed Stinson, DE/DT, Alabama: C+ Grade
The Cardinals wanted to take a five-technique to succeed Darnell Dockett, but two five-techs? It’s a little puzzling, but I guess having good depth never hurts. Still though, I’m not a big fan of this pick; it’s not like Ed Stinson is this great value, or anything.

  21. Green Bay Packers: Corey Linsley, C, Ohio State: C+ Grade
The Packers had to find a center after allowing Evan Dietrich-Smith to walk in free agency. This is a bit high for Corey Linsley, but I wouldn’t call it a huge reach. Considering the need, I can’t blame the Packers too much for taking Linsley earlier than expected.

  22. Philadelphia Eagles: Ed Reynolds, S, Stanford: B Grade
I cannot believe that Chip Kelly is taking a Pac-12 player. Wow. Projections were all over the place for Ed Reynolds, with one team telling us that they had him in the sixth round. This range makes sense, and Reynolds could fill a need if he pans out.

  23. Kansas City Chiefs: Aaron Murray, QB, Georgia: A Grade
Nice. Alex Smith cannot lead the Chiefs deep into the playoffs, but perhaps Aaron Murray will be able to. Murray would have gone much earlier had he not torn his ACL, so Kansas City is getting a steal and perhaps its future starting quarterback. This is an awesome pick in the fifth round.

  24. Cincinnati Bengals: A.J. McCarron, QB, Alabama: C+ Grade
Did A.J. McCarron mean he would be picked around the 16th selection in the fifth round? I don’t like this pick as much as Kansas City’s Aaron Murray choice because McCarron has no chance to be a starter. I can’t stand it when analysts say that McCarron was a winner. That’s like saying Mark Sanchez was a winner for the Jets in 2009-2011. McCarron’s defense carried him, and any other quarterback would’ve enjoyed similar success. He’s a career backup at best.

  25. San Diego Chargers: Ryan Carrethers, NT, Arkansas State: B- Grade
Some thought the Chargers would pick Louis Nix at No. 25 because of their glaring need for a nose tackle. They waited a long time, and it’s unknown if Ryan Carrethers can ever develop into a starter, but this pick is close to his range.

  26. Indianapolis Colts: Jonathan Newsome, DE/OLB, Ball State: C Grade
The Colts didn’t have many picks in this draft, so they had to nail all of them. Instead, they chose a seventh-round prospect at a position that’s not a huge need. Blegh.

  27. New Orleans Saints: Vinnie Sunseri, S, Alabama: C Grade
The Saints like to use three safeties on the field, so they were expected to take one even after signing Jairus Byrd. However, Vinnie Sunseri is a reach; I didn’t think he would be drafted.

  28. Atlanta Falcons: Marquis Spruill, ILB, Syracuse: C Grade
The Falcons had to find some linebacker depth, so picking a player at the position in the fifth round makes sense. However, they chose a seventh-round prospect; they could have obtained him later and chosen a better prospect here instead.

  29. New Orleans Saints: Ronald Powell, DE/OLB, Florida: B- Grade
There’s a bit more value with this New Orleans pick. The Saints really needed to get another pass-rusher because they can’t count on Victor Butler contributing. I guess it’s better late than never, but they should have obtained an outside linebacker earlier. Ronald Powell makes sense here though.

  30. San Francisco 49ers: Keith Reaser, CB, Florida Atlantic: C- Grade
The 49ers have done a great job of picking value players thus far, but that does not apply to this pick. Keith Reaser had no buzz as a draftable prospect, so it’s worth wondering if San Francisco could have chosen him in the seventh round or picked him up as a UDFA.

  31. Miami Dolphins: Jordan Tripp, OLB, Montana: A Grade
The Dolphins were expected to choose a linebacker much earlier than this – perhaps even as high as the first round. It’s late for one, but it helps that Jordan Tripp provides great value. Tripp probably should have been off the board in the Round 3-4 range.

  32. Seattle Seahawks: Jimmy Staten, DT, Middle Tennessee State: A Grade
This is a bit early for Jimmy Staten, but the Middle Tennessee State product received a ton of pre-draft attention, so perhaps the Seahawks figured he would be off the board by their next pick. It’s not a surprise that they chose an interior defensive lineman because depth had to be addressed.

  33. Pittsburgh Steelers: Wesley Johnson, C/OT/G, Vanderbilt: B+ Grade
Some figured the Steelers would go offensive line earlier, but that wasn’t very realistic because it wasn’t such a need. Depth had to be addressed though, and Wesley Johnson can play most of the positions on the front. Solid pick.

  34. New York Giants: Devon Kennard, DE/OLB, USC: B+ Grade
An edge pass-rusher makes sense here, as it’s something the Giants haven’t addressed yet. Devon Kennard was expected to go a bit earlier than this, so I like this selection.

  35. Baltimore Ravens: John Urschel, G, Penn State: B+ Grade
The Ravens are set at guard, but they needed some depth at the position. John Urschel fits the range as a fifth-round prospect, so this is another logical choice by Ozzie Newsome.

  36. Green Bay Packers: Jared Abbrederis, WR, Wisconsin: A Grade
I had a tip that the Packers liked Jared Abbrederis, but I actually thought they’d choose him earlier than this. They picked Davante Adams instead, and didn’t need a receiver. The value was too much to pass up on him at this juncture though. Green Bay is getting great value.
