Baltimore Ravens: C.J. Mosley, ILB, Alabama: C Grade
Five-Year Grade: B- Grade
C.J. Mosley is one of the most overrated players in the NFL. He defends the run very well, but looks like he’s running in quicksand sometimes in coverage. He’s a solid linebacker, but he’s nowhere near the stud people make him out to be. Some teams projected Mosley to be a second-round pick in this draft, so this was a reach at the time. The selection makes more sense now, but it still isn’t very good.
Original Write-up:
I hate to question Ozzie Newsome, but I’m not a fan of this pick. Trusted sources who wouldn’t smokescreen us told us that they had C.J. Mosley in the second round because C.J. Mosley was damaged goods. We actually spoke to two teams that thought Mosley would be available in the second round. The pick makes sense for need purposes, and Mosley could pan out, but this selection has a very high bust rate.

New York Jets: Calvin Pryor, S, Louisville: B Grade
Five-Year Grade: F Grade
Calvin Pryor lasted just three years with the Jets. He’s now out of the NFL. I guess this wasn’t such a great pick!
Original Write-up:
This is a solid pick for the Jets. I’m not sure if many expected this, given the need for receivers and corners, but I had Calvin Pryor to New York in my mock because he was such a perfect fit for Rex Ryan’s defense. Jet fans will love Pryor’s hard hitting, and I’m sure they’ll be relieved that the huge need at safety has been filled. The Jets won’t be signing Ed Reed during the middle of this upcoming season, that’s for sure.

Miami Dolphins: JaWuan James, OT, Tennessee: C- Grade
Five-Year Grade: A- Grade
This pick was a reach at the time. I wrote that I thought the Dolphins could’ve obtained Ja’Wuan James in the second round. Still, this selection worked out. James has mostly been solid for the Dolphins at right tackle, and he’ll likely receive a large contract this offseason.
Original Write-up:
I loved the crowd reaction to this, as many of the people in the seats responded, “Who?” The Dolphins have loved JaWuan James all along, but there’s no doubt that this is a major reach. James might have been available at Miami’s second-round pick. I would give Miami a dreaded Millen grade under normal circumstances, but think about what happened last year. The Dolphins almost had to go offensive line to protect Ryan Tannehill, and with the top four tackles off the board (as well as C.J. Mosley and Ryan Shazier), they didn’t have much of a choice. I just wish Miami would have traded down.

New Orleans Saints: Brandin Cooks, WR, Oregon State: A- Grade
Five-Year Grade: B Grade
Brandin Cooks is an electric player, but he’s caused some drama in the locker room in New Orleans and New England. There’s no doubting Cooks’ talent, so it says a lot that two smart organizations were so eager to give up on him. That said, I can’t re-grade this poorly because Cooks is such a dynamic player.
Original Write-up:
The Saints are giving up a third-round pick to move up from No. 27 to 20. I’d say it’s worth it, considering they landed the top receiver available. Wideout was a big need for New Orleans; Marques Colston is always banged up, while Lance Moore is gone. Brandin Cooks will take Moore’s spot and will be a huge upgrade. It’s almost scary to imagine the Saints’ offense now with Cooks joining Drew Brees and Jimmy Graham. Sean Payton will have lots of fun with Cooks.

Green Bay Packers: Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, S, Alabama: A- Grade
Five-Year Grade: A- Grade
It was odd that the Packers traded away Ha Ha Clinton-Dix during the middle of the 2018 season, considering that he was such a good player for them. Despite the deal, this selection should still be graded favorably, as Clinton-Dix has been one of Green Bay’s best defenders from 2014 to the early stages of 2018.

The talented prospects just have a knack of falling to the smart teams. That’s what happened here, as Ha Ha Clinton-Dix was projected to go as high as No. 10 to Detroit or No. 13 to St. Louis. Clinton-Dix was one of the better players available, and he will undoubtedly improve an abysmal secondary that gave up giant passing performances to nearly every team they battled this past year.

Cleveland Browns: Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M: A+ Grade
Five-Year Grade: F- Grade
Man, I missed on this one. Johnny Manziel looked like a winner coming out of Texas A&M, but his career (and life) has been derailed by substance abuse issues. The silver lining is that the Browns didn’t select Manziel with their first pick, though the Justin Gilbert pick was a bust as well.

Wow. I was critical of the Browns passing on Johnny Manziel with their first pick, but it turns out that they may have come away with the best draft class of all the teams. They got themselves a stud defender and a potential franchise quarterback. Oh, and they also have a probable top-12 pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.
I obviously love this selection. Manziel is a leader and a winner, and he is exactly what the Browns need to energize their morbid franchise. He has a somewhat high bust rate because of his small frame, but the Browns will actually be interesting for the first time since 2002.

Kansas City Chiefs: Dee Ford, DE/OLB, Auburn: D Grade
Five-Year Grade: B+ Grade
Dee Ford is coming off a great year, but it took him a while to live up to expectations. Ford has struggled for most of his career, so credit the Chiefs for sticking with him for so long. It finally paid off, as Ford was a late bloomer. He ranked among the top of the league for sacks in 2018. He ultimately hurt the Chiefs by lining up offsides, which negated a Tom Brady interception in the AFC Championship, but the Chiefs have to feel optimistic about Ford moving forward.
Original Write-up:
Ugh. The Chiefs have not been drafting well in this new regime. Their class last year was Eric Fisher (who struggled), Travis Kelce, Knile Davis and Nico Johnson. They dealt this year’s second for mediocre Alex Smith. And now they’re taking a second-round prospect who fills a minimal need. Things are not looking very bright in Kansas City.
There’s no doubt that Ford is a reach. The Chiefs could have moved down and still picked him. Ford also won’t start anytime soon with Tamba Hali and Justin Houston in front of him. This is the worst pick of the first round thus far, but at least it’s not on a Millen level.

Cincinnati Bengals: Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State: A Grade
Five-Year Grade: B- Grade
Darqueze Dennard has been a solid slot cornerback for the Bengals. He hasn’t played poorly, but the Bengals expected more out of him when they used a first-round pick on him five years ago. I think re-grading this as a B- makes sense.
Original Write-up:
Great pick. This is really the best the Bengals could have hoped for. They had a big need at cornerback – thanks to aging players and the departure of Mike Zimmer – and some could argue that Darqueze Dennard was the best player at his position in this class. I wouldn’t have said that, but the fact remains that this is very good value for Dennard, who could have easily gone at No. 14 to Chicago.

San Diego Chargers: Jason Verrett, CB, TCU: B+ Grade
Five-Year Grade: D Grade
Jason Verrett has played well when he’s been on the field. Unfortunately, he hasn’t been on the field very much. He has missed 53 games in five seasons, which is just absurd. This has to be graded poorly as a result, though I wouldn’t go with an “F” because I don’t think anyone saw Verrett having this much trouble staying healthy.

So much for the report that Jason Verrett would fall to the second round because of a bum shoulder. Verrett is a very skilled player despite his 5-foot-9 frame. The range is right for him, and he fills a huge need at corner. San Diego had to address the position if it wanted to stand any chance against Peyton Manning.

Philadelphia Eagles: Marcus Smith, DE/OLB, Louisville: C Grade
Five-Year Grade: F Grade
Unlike some of the other draft busts from this class, this Chip Kelly beauty is still in the NFL. However, Marcus Smith is just a fringe player, and he was active for only two games last year. Time is running out for him to make an impact in the NFL.
Original Write-up:
This is a reach, as Marcus Smith was a second-round prospect. However, there are two things that save the Eagles from receiving a dreaded Millen grade: First, Smith is a very good fit for Chip Kelly’s defense and happens to fill a big need as a pass-rushing linebacker. Second, Philadelphia obtained another selection while moving down for Smith, so they at least understood that they were overdrafting him.

Arizona Cardinals: Deone Bucannon, S, Washington State: D Grade
Five-Year Grade: D Grade
I called this one of the worst picks in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft when it happened, and the only thing that saved this from being an “F” was that Arizona traded down. Bucannon was a second-day prospect who had no business being chosen on Thursday night. He has played down to that distinction, struggling mightily for the Cardinals over the years. This re-grade remains a “D,” as Bucannon is still at least on Arizona’s roster.
Original Write-up:
Oh man. This might be the new worst pick of the first round. Again, the trade down saves the Cardinals from receiving a Millen, but Deone Bucannon was a concrete second-day pick. I had him in Round 3. I knew that was a bit too late, but I never envisioned him being chosen on Thursday.
At any rate, Bucannon fills a huge need at safety. Arizona had to address the position during the draft after losing Yeremiah Bell this offseason. Bucannon will be an upgrade over what the Cardinals had, but he’s still a reach.

Carolina Panthers: Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Florida State: C- Grade
Five-Year Grade: C- Grade
Kelvin Benjamin flashed at times in Carolina, but the Panthers grew tired of his lethargy and poor attitude and traded him away to the Bills. Benjamin did absolutely nothing in Buffalo, then struggled in Kansas City upon getting cut. Benjamin, whose stats have declined every single season in the pros, is running out of chances.
Original Write-up:
Ugh, over Marqise Lee and the other tackles? One trusted source we spoke to had Kelvin Benjamin slotted as a mid-round pick. He said that Benjamin couldn’t run, and that he was very inconsistent with dropped passes. Lee probably would have been the better option, but at least Carolina is filling a huge need. The team almost had to pick a wideout or a left tackle with the 28th pick.

New England Patriots: Dominique Easley, DT, Florida: B Grade
Five-Year Grade: D Grade
Dominique Easley had major injury concerns entering the 2014 NFL Draft, so it’s no surprise that those have carried over into the NFL. Easley has missed 39 of his 80 possible games in the pros, and he hasn’t registered a sack since 2016. This is all a shame, as Easley is a big-time talent, but hasn’t been able to live up to it because of his poor durability.
Original Write-up:
This pick surprises me because Dominique Easley doesn’t fit Bill Belichick’s profile. That’s not to say Easley isn’t a good player. He’s very talented, and would be a top-15 choice had he not sustained torn ACLs. But the injuries have to be a factor, so this is a big high-risk, high-reward selection. Easley could be a force for the Patriots, but he could also frustrate the coaching staff by always being banged up.

San Francisco 49ers: Jimmie Ward, S, Northern Illinois: C+ Grade
Five-Year Grade: C- Grade
Speaking of injury-prone players, Jimmie Ward has played more than 11 games just once in his career. He’s played double-digit games only twice. He’s landed on injured reserve four times. Ward plays well when given the chance, but his career has been derailed with all of the injuries he has suffered.

Jimmie Ward will apparently be used as a nickel corner, so this pick makes a bit more sense, given that the safety position is filled. Still though, that doesn’t change the fact that Ward is a bit of a reach; everyone we’ve spoken to had him in the second round. I’m also wondering why the 49ers didn’t move up. What are they going to do with all of their picks?

Denver Broncos: Bradley Roby, CB, Ohio State: A- Grade
Five-Year Grade: B Grade
Bradley Roby was a solid third cornerback for the Broncos before Aqib Talib left the team. Roby was expected to take a step up after Denver got rid of Talib last offseason, but the opposite occurred. Roby had a poor 2018 campaign, but he still has the potential and talent to bounce back. Roby appears to be at a crossroads in his career, and I don’t think anything would surprise me about him at this point.
Original Write-up:
You know what’s great about Denver’s win-now philosophy? They won’t care very much if Bradley Roby gets into trouble down the road. The Broncos had to find players who could help them win right now, given Peyton Manning’s career status, and Roby should help them do that. Roby had a brutal 2013 campaign, but he was stellar in 2012. Had he declared last year, he would’ve been a top-10 pick. Denver can coach him up and have him perform up to his ability.

Minnesota Vikings: Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville: B Grade
Five-Year Grade: B Grade
This is a tough re-grade. Teddy Bridgewater seemed like he would be a franchise quarterback, but he suffered a devastating knee injury a few years ago, which derailed his career. Bridgewater is healthy enough to play now, but it remains to be seen if he’ll be the same talented signal-caller we saw lead the Vikings into the playoffs in 2015. If the Vikings had to do this over, I imagine they would select Bridgewater again and hope that he wouldn’t blow out his knee again.
Original Write-up:
Many of Teddy Bridgewater’s fan base on Twitter will praise this pick, but I’m not in love with it. It’s solid, but remember that there’s a reason nearly every single team in the NFL passed on him. Bridgewater doesn’t have any great traits. He doesn’t have any glaring negative ones either, but this all just means that he’s going to be an average starter at best, and I’m concerned about him playing outdoors over the next couple of years. Having said that, “average starter at best” is a big upgrade over what the Vikings have had at quarterback since Brett Favre.
