2014 NFL Mock Draft: Round 1 – Picks 17-32

The order of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft is based on my NFL Power Rankings.

  1. Baltimore Ravens: Marqise Lee, WR, USC
    It should be quite apparent that the Ravens desperately need help at receiver. Neither Jacoby Jones nor Marlon Brown should be a No. 2 wideout in the NFL. Think Joe Flacco misses Anquan Boldin?

    If Baltimore decides to go with a wideout – a likely scenario if Eric Ebron and C.J. Mosley are off the board – Ozzie Newsome will have plenty of players at the position to choose from. Thus, the Ravens would be a candidate to move down unless they really love Marqise Lee. Perhaps a team looking to nab the falling Anthony Barr would like to trade up.

  2. New York Jets: Brandin Cooks, WR, Oregon State
    The Jets need to add more play-makers to the roster because Geno Smith is surrounded by the worst supporting cast in the NFL. The top weapon who can be added to the roster is Brandin Cooks, who blew up the Combine. For more on the Jets potentially choosing Cooks, check out the 2014 NFL Draft Team Rumors page.

  3. Miami Dolphins: Zack Martin, OT/G, Notre Dame
    Zack Martin had an outstanding Senior Bowl, and there’s talk that despite his short arms, he could be used at left tackle. Worst-case scenario, he’s a stud guard. Miami needs help at both positions in the wake of the Richie Incognito-Jonathan Martin incident.

    Also, here’s something to keep in mind: As Charlie Campbell noted on our NFL Draft Rumors page, “Dennis Hickey has a huge inclination to go for high-character players. If a player is perceived to be a thug, gang-banger or have a drug issue, that could knock them off Miami’s board. I could see Zack Martin being a fit.”

  4. Arizona Cardinals: Anthony Barr, DE/OLB, UCLA
    The Cardinals have a habit of going with the top player on their board. The prospect who fits that description is Anthony Barr, who was previously slotted at No. 11. Some are souring on Barr, so he could slip into the teens or early 20s on Draft Day. If so, I’m sure Arizona will be thrilled to scoop him up, as he could potentially be a great pass-rushing threat across from Sam Acho.

  5. Green Bay Packers: Ra’Shede Hageman, DE/DT, Minnesota
    The Packers spent last year’s first-round pick on a defensive lineman, but that doesn’t mean that Ted Thompson won’t double dip there. B.J. Raji happens to be a free agent, and his price tag is simply too high for Green Bay. Ra’Shede Hageman is one of the top players available and happens to fit what the Packers want to do up front in terms of getting quicker.

  6. Philadelphia Eagles: Calvin Pryor, S, Louisville
    Philadelphia’s defense was terrible for many reasons, one of which is the safety position. Nate Allen is an impending free agent, while Patrick Chung is absolutely terrible. The Eagles want to address this position in free agency, but they really need to make two upgrades here, and that could prove difficult to do.

  7. Kansas City Chiefs: Odell Beckham, WR, LSU
    The Chiefs need another outside receiver to start across from Dwayne Bowe. They’re very likely to attack this position early. I’ve been mocking Kelvin Benjamin to them, but Odell Beckham has jumped over Benjamin on my board.

  8. Cincinnati Bengals: Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State
    Mike Zimmer did a great job of getting the most out of Terence Newman and Pacman Jones, but he’s moved on to be the head coach in Minnesota. The Bengals will have to compensate with some new corners. Darqueze Dennard happens to be one of the top players available, despite his underwhelming Combine performance.



  9. San Diego Chargers: Louis Nix, NT, Notre Dame
    The Chargers currently lack a starting-caliber nose tackle, so they’ll be thrilled if Louis Nix falls to them. This has a good chance of happening, as many teams won’t be interested in Nix because he’s not very good at rushing the passer. San Diego won’t care though, as it needs an upgrade over Cam Thomas, who happens to be an impending free agent.

  10. Cleveland Browns: Derek Carr, QB, Fresno State
    Cleveland has been linked to Derek Carr, so the front office may opt to draft him here instead of spending the No. 4 pick on a much better quarterback. Hey, it’s the Browns; they like to do things a bit “differently” because they are a “special” team.

  11. New Orleans Saints: Kony Ealy, DE/OLB, Missouri
    Considering that New Orleans has to deal with Matt Ryan and Cam Newton twice per year, the team could stand to bolster its pass rush. The Saints can’t count on Victor Butler, who is coming off a torn ACL. Butler will be a free agent following the 2014 season anyway.

  12. Carolina Panthers: Jason Verrett, CB, TCU
    The Panthers have some cornerbacks hitting free agency, including Captain Munnerlyn, so they’ll need help at the position. Ron Rivera highlighted the secondary and the receiving corps as two areas that need to be fixed.

  13. New England Patriots: Kyle Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech
    The Patriots will need depth at cornerback behind Alfonzo Dennard and Logan Ryan if free agent Aqib Talib walks, which is why I’ve been mocking a corner to them in the middle rounds. However, they could spend their first-rounder on the position if Talib leaves; Dennard struggled a bit last year.

  14. San Francisco 49ers: Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Florida State
    Anquan Boldin was re-signed – go here for my Free Agent Grades – but he won’t be around much longer. Also, Mario Manningham is about to hit the market. San Francisco needs to add a deep threat at wideout, and Kelvin Benjamin certainly fits that. The 49ers like Benjamin, so they may trade up for him.

  15. Denver Broncos: Stephon Tuitt, DE/DT, Notre Dame
    The Broncos have some issues at defensive end. Shaun Phillips, 33 in May, surprised many by playing extremely well after struggling in San Diego the previous season. Unfortunately, his contract expires in March. Robert Ayers also happens to be a free agent.

  16. Seattle Seahawks: Dee Ford, DE/OLB, Auburn
    The Seahawks need another edge rusher. Cliff Avril will be a free agent after this upcoming season, and Seattle probably won’t be able to afford him. Chris Clemons, meanwhile, could be released soon.
