2014 NFL Mock Draft: Round 3

Last update: Wednesday, March 5, 2014. Major changes in all 5 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

The order of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft is based on my NFL Power Rankings.

*** 2014 NFL Mock Draft (5 rounds) was updated Feb. 28. This mock draft will be updated at least once per week (Tuesday afternoons and other times for important events.). Check out old versions of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft in the archived mock draft section. Follow @walterfootball for updates. ***

  1. Houston Texans: Cameron Fleming, OT, Stanford
As mentioned earlier, the right tackle position was a huge problem area for the Texans. They’ll have to find an upgrade in Rounds 2-4.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

  2. Washington Redskins: Taylor Hart, DE/DT, Oregon
The Redskins need help all over their defense, including up front. They had no push from their defensive line this past season.

  3. Oakland Raiders: David Yankey, G/OT, Stanford
The Raiders need multiple upgrades on their offensive line. Lucas Nix might be the worst starting guard in the NFL, so he needs to be replaced.

  4. Atlanta Falcons: Gabe Jackson, G, Mississippi State
The Falcons have some major issues on the offensive line. Everyone wants to look at left tackle, but the guard position is an area that must be upgraded as well.

Pick change; previously Ed Reynolds, S

  5. New York Jets: Ed Reynolds, S, Stanford
The Jets have to address the issues in their secondary. They signed Ed Reed during the season, but that didn’t work out so well.

Pick change; previously Deone Bucannon, S

  6. Jacksonville Jaguars: Jeremiah Attaochu, DE/OLB, Georgia Tech
Jacksonville finished dead last in the NFL in sacks this past season. Given that the Jaguars have to get through Andrew Luck to win the AFC South, they’ll need to bolster their pass rush.

Pick change; previously Bishop Sankey, RB

  7. Cleveland Browns: Christian Jones, LB, Florida State
The Browns already needed help at inside linebacker before they released D’Qwell Jackson. Now, addressing the position becomes a priority.

Pick change; previously Gabe Jackson, G

  8. Minnesota Vikings: Craig Loston, S, LSU
The Vikings have an awful secondary that they’ll need to address. A new safety is needed next to Harrison Smith.

  9. Buffalo Bills: Shayne Skov, ILB, Stanford
Kiko Alonso is a stud, but the Bills need someone else to play next to him, especially given that Arthur Moats is heading into free agency.

  10. New York Giants: Devonta Freeman, RB, Florida State
The Giants are another team that will be hunting for a new running back. Andre Brown is a free agent, while David Wilson may not be ready for the 2014 season.

  11. St. Louis Rams: Tajh Boyd, QB, Clemson
The Rams should think about drafting a quarterback on Day 2 just in case Sam Bradford continues to be mediocre (and injury-prone).

  12. Detroit Lions: Jared Abbrederis, WR, Wisconsin
We all saw what happens to Detroit’s offense when Calvin Johnson is unavailable. The Lions need an insurance policy of sorts. Besides, having a solid No. 2 across from Megatron would make the Lions’ scoring attack even more explosive.

Pick change; previously Loucheiz Purifoy, CB

  13. San Francisco 49ers: Deone Bucannon, S, Washington State
The 49ers spent a first-round pick on a safety last year, but they may have to use another selection on one with Donte Whitner heading into free agency.

Pick change; previously Christian Jones, ILB

  14. Dallas Cowboys: Telvin Smith, OLB, Florida State
When defenders like Ernie Sims and DeVonte Holloman are playing major snaps for the defense, something absolutely needs to be done.

  15. Baltimore Ravens: Lache Seastrunk, RB, Baylor
Given Ray Rice’s struggles and legal issues, the Ravens may use a pick in the middle rounds on a new running back.

Pick change; previously Travis Swanson, C

  16. New York Jets: Jarvis Landry, WR, LSU
Geno Smith has looked like the worst quarterback in the NFL on many occasions this season – even worse than Brandon Weeden and Jeff Tuel – but it’s not like he has much of a chance with his horrific receiving corps. Santonio Holmes can’t stay healthy, while Stephen Hill is a bust.

  17. Miami Dolphins: Jack Mewhort, OT, Ohio State
As noted earlier, the Dolphins must make multiple upgrades on their offensive line. If they want to use Zack Martin at guard, they could take a tackle later on.

  18. Chicago Bears: Terrence Brooks, S, Florida State
Chicago has a huge void at the safety position; Major Wright is a free agent, while Chris Conte’s ineptitude was quite apparent in the win-and-in season finale versus the Packers.

Pick change; previously Ahmad Dixon, S

  19. Cleveland Browns: Donte Moncrief, WR, Ole Miss
If Greg Little is “Mr. Dependable,” does that make Davone Bess “Mr. Reliable?” Sounds like an episode of Emmitt on the Brink…

  20. Arizona Cardinals: Ahmad Dixon, S, Baylor
The Cardinals will have to address the safety position, as Yeremiah Bell happens to be an impending free agent.

Pick change; previously Terrence Brooks, S

  21. Green Bay Packers: Tre Boston, S, North Carolina
Is there any doubt that the Packers need to improve their secondary? Their defensive backfield blew so many coverages throughout the season, and they had no chance against Colin Kaepernick.

Pick change; previously Jordan Zumwalt, ILB

  22. Philadelphia Eagles: Trevor Reilly, DE/OLB, Utah
The only linebacker who consistently put pressure on the quarterback was Trent Cole, and he won’t last beyond next year because he’s due $10 million in 2015. Another pass-rusher is currently needed anyway.

Pick change; previously Jordan Zumwalt, ILB

  23. Kansas City Chiefs: JuWuan James, OT, Tennessee
I’ve been told that the Chiefs will allow Branden Albert to walk. They’ll want to address the tackle position at some point during the middle rounds if they can’t do anything about it in free agency.

  24. Cincinnati Bengals: Travis Swanson, C, Arkansas
The center position is the No. 5 need I have listed in the Bengals team needs page. Kyle Cook needs to be upgraded.

Pick change; previously Jackson Jeffcoat, DE

  25. San Diego Chargers: Cyril Richardson, G/OT, Baylor
The Chargers have some issues on the interior of their offensive line. Both Chad Rinehart and Rich Ohrnberger are impending free agents, while Jeromey Clary struggled at his new position.

  26. Indianapolis Colts: Joel Bitonio, G/OT, Nevada
Adding an offensive linemen who can play multiple positions would be a good idea for the Colts, who have issues up front.

Pick change; previously Ed Stinson, DE/DT

  27. New Orleans Saints: Loucheiz Purifoy, CB, Florida
The Saints have some issues at cornerback. Jabari Greer was recently released, as he was coming off a torn ACL.

Pick change; previously Marcus Smith, CB

  28. Carolina Panthers: Cyrus Kouandjio, OT, Alabama
Both Cyrus Kouandjio and Antonio Richardson took major hits at the Combine because of their failed physical exams. I didn’t know what to do with them, so I dropped both to Rounds 3-4. The Panthers need a tackle in the wake of Jordan Gross’ retirement, so maybe they’ll take a chance on Kouandjio.

Pick change; previously Dominique Easley, DE

  29. New England Patriots: DaQuan Jones, NT, Penn State
Perhaps this is an overreaction pick, but Vince Wilfork will find it difficult to come back from a torn Achilles at his size and age. DaQuan Jones had an awesome 3-cone time at the Combine, which is something Bill Belichick loves.

  30. San Francisco 49ers: Kareem Martin, DE, North Carolina
The 49ers have Tank Carradine waiting in the wings, but with four second-day picks, they can afford to go with the best player available who fits their scheme perfectly.

Pick change; previously Tre Boston, S

  31. Denver Broncos: Christian Kirksey, LB, Iowa
Wesley Woodyard has looked out of place trying to play middle linebacker. Paris Lenon is a disaster. This is an area Denver may want to upgrade to help improve its defense, which couldn’t get off the field in the Super Bowl.

  32. Minnesota Vikings: Dominique Easley, DE, Florida
Jared Allen, an impending free agent, is not expected back in Minnesota. The Vikings will have to find someone else to rush the passer.

Pick change; previously Ka’Deem Carey, RB
