2014 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2

Last update: Wednesday, March 5, 2014. Major changes in all 5 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

The order of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft is based on my NFL Power Rankings.

*** 2014 NFL Mock Draft (5 rounds) was updated Feb. 28. This mock draft will be updated at least once per week (Tuesday afternoons and other times for important events.). Check out old versions of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft in the archived mock draft section. Follow @walterfootball for updates. ***

  1. Houston Texans: Carl Bradford, DE/OLB, Arizona State
The Texans would kill two stones with one bird with this pick, as Emmitt would say. They need to upgrade their pass rush and find some help at inside linebacker. Carl Bradford would satisfy the former, which would allow Brooks Reed to move inside.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

Pick change; previously Lamarcus Joyner, CB/S

  2. Washington Redskins: Ryan Shazier, LB, Ohio State
ESPN loved talking up London Fletcher by saying he was still great this past season, but he could barely move. He was one of the reasons the Redskins were so inept on defense. He has announced his retirement anyway.

  3. Cleveland Browns: Carlos Hyde, RB, Ohio State
The Browns planned on courting Ben Tate in free agency, but that was when Michael Lombardi was in charge. As for now, Carlos Hyde is the type of running back Cleveland is looking for per our NFL Draft Team Rumors page.

  4. Oakland Raiders: Zach Mettenberger, QB, LSU
The Raiders obviously have to go quarterback early in the 2014 NFL Draft. If they pass on one at No. 5, they’ll almost certainly select one here.

  5. St. Louis Rams: Bradley Roby, CB, Ohio State
The Rams acquired this selection from the proposed Jadeveon Clowney trade, as noted in Round 1. Bradley Roby’s stock is on the rise after a strong Combine. St. Louis will definitely consider him atop Round 2, as the disappointing Cortland Finnegan due $9 million next year.

  6. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Jimmy Garoppolo, QB, Eastern Illinois
The Buccaneers have discussed bringing in a new quarterback. They have a new regime, so they have no allegiance to Mike Glennon, who faded down the stretch.

Pick change; previously Derek Carr, QB

  7. Jacksonville Jaguars: Tre Mason, RB, Auburn
Maurice Jones-Drew is an impending free agent (go here to check out my 2014 NFL Free Agent Rankings). He’ll likely want to leave such a terrible situation, so the Jaguars will need to find a new running back.

Pick change; previously Jimmy Garoppolo, QB

  8. Minnesota Vikings: Xavier Su’a-Filo, G, UCLA
The Vikings can help their new quarterback (as well as Adrian Peterson) with improved interior offensive line play. Charlie Johnson, the weak link on the unit, happens to be a free agent.

Pick change; previously Zach Mettenberger, QB

  9. Buffalo Bills: Jace Amaro, TE, Texas Tech
The Bills add yet another play-maker for E.J. Manuel, who needs all the help he can get. The tight end position definitely needs to be upgraded.

Pick change; previously Troy Niklas, TE

  10. Tennessee Titans: Morgan Moses, OT, Virginia
The Titans will be looking for some long-term solutions at tackle. Michael Roos will be a free agent in 2015, while David Stewart could be released this offseason because he’s due $6.4 million next year.

  11. New York Giants: Scott Crichton, DE, Oregon State
New York could double dip in the trenches. Justin Tuck is a free agent, so the Giants will need another pass-rusher if he moves on.

  12. St. Louis Rams: Jordan Matthews, WR, Vanderbilt
There’s a chance the Rams take Sammy Watkins with their initial first-round pick. If not, perhaps they’ll address the receiver position with one of their next couple of choices. St. Louis needs to make sure Sam Bradford succeeds.

  13. Detroit Lions: Jimmie Ward, S, Northern Illinois
The Lions cut Louis Delmas recently. If they can’t find a safety in free agency, they’ll have to use an early selection on one because they have nothing at the position.

  14. Pittsburgh Steelers: Lamarcus Joyner, CB/S, Florida State
The Steelers have to address the cornerback position. Ike Taylor was dreadful this past year, as the receivers he battled – save for A.J. Green, oddly enough – posted season-high totals against him.

Pick change; previously Marcus Roberson, CB

  15. Dallas Cowboys: Dion Bailey, S, USC
Dallas had horrible safety play all year. An upgrade in this area would have allowed it to beat Philadelphia in Week 17.

  16. Baltimore Ravens: Marcus Martin, C, USC
Ray Lewis, Ed Reed and others all left, but perhaps the player the Ravens missed most was Matt Birk. His replacements at center have been horrible. Almost anyone would be an upgrade.

Pick change; previously Martavis Bryant, WR

  17. New York Jets: Troy Niklas, TE, Notre Dame
Kellen Winslow proved to be an insufficient replacement for Dustin Keller, so this is a position New York will look to upgrade this offseason.

Pick change; previously Kyle Van Noy, DE/OLB

  18. Miami Dolphins: Bishop Sankey, RB, Washington
The Dolphins don’t trust Lamar Miller at all, while Daniel Thomas isn’t very good. They’ll likely be searching for a new starting running back this spring.

Pick change; previously Tre Mason, RB

  19. Chicago Bears: Marcus Roberson, CB, Florida
Chicago was able to re-sign Tim Jennings recently, but Charles Tillman’s contract is expiring soon. The Bears have to deal with Aaron Rodgers and Matthew Stafford twice per year, so they’ll definitely look to upgrade their secondary with multiple selections.

Pick change; previously Bashaud Breeland, CB

  20. Arizona Cardinals: Brandon Thomas, OT/G, Clemson
The Cardinals are going to try to sign Branden Albert this offseason. If they miss on him and the other top tackles, they’ll have to address the position early in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Pick change; previously Jeremiah Attaochu, DE/OLB

  21. Green Bay Packers: Trent Murphy, DE/OLB, Stanford
The Packers need pass-rushing depth in the event that Clay Matthews gets hurt again. As Charlie Campbell reported, the Packers are very interested in Trent Murphy.

  22. Philadelphia Eagles: Martavis Bryant, WR, Clemson
The Eagles just re-signed Jeremy Maclin and Riley Cooper – go here for my Free Agent Grades – but Maclin was brought back for just one year, while DeSean Jackson could be traded.

Pick change; previously Carl Bradford, DE/OLB

  23. Cincinnati Bengals: Kyle Van Noy, DE/OLB, BYU
The Bengals will need pass-rushing help if Michael Johnson leaves via free agency. The Bengals like for their strongside linebackers to rush the passer (James Harrison). Here’s Harrison’s eventual replacement.

Pick change; previously Marcus Martin, C

  24. San Francisco 49ers: Keith McGill, CB, Utah
San Francisco’s group of cornerbacks isn’t very strong, as Carlos Rogers has understandably declined at 32. He’s due $6.25 million next year, so the team could cut ties with him. The 49ers extended Tramaine Brock, but they’ll still need corner help.

Pick change; previously Davante Adams, WR

  25. San Diego Chargers: Bashaud Breeland, CB, Clemson
The Chargers’ defense made every single quarterback look like a Pro Bowler early in the year. They have a dreadful cornerback situation, which could be remedied with the use of an early-round pick in May’s draft.

Pick change; previously Keith McGill, CB

  26. New Orleans Saints: Allen Robinson, WR, Penn State
The Saints could use another receiver. Marques Colston disappointed this season prior to the Carolina victory, yet he’s still New Orleans’ top option by a wide margin.

  27. Indianapolis Colts: Chris Borland, ILB, Wisconsin
The Colts need help all over their defense, including the linebacking corps, where the injury-prone Pat Angerer will be a free agent next week.

  28. Carolina Panthers: Davante Adams, WR, Fresno State
Ron Rivera talked at length about upgrading the receiver position during the Combine press conference. He even refused to say that Steve Smith will be back next year. The Panthers were already hurting at wideout with Smith; now they may need two upgrades.

Pick change; previously Brandon Thomas, OT/G

  29. San Francisco 49ers: Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE, Washington
Jim Harbaugh loves to run multiple-tight end formations. He missed Delanie Walker this past season, so I could see San Francisco using one of its many second-day selections on a replacement.

  30. New England Patriots: Weston Richburg, C, Colorado State
Ryan Wendell, an impending free agent, has been most responsible for Tom Brady’s poor pass protection.

  31. Denver Broncos: Stanley Jean-Baptiste, CB, Nebraska
You have to wonder what the Broncos plan on doing at cornerback in 2014 and beyond. Champ Bailey and Quentin Jammer will be 36 and 35, respectively, in June. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, meanwhile, will be a free agent in March.

  32. Seattle Seahawks: Paul Richardson, WR, Colorado
Golden Tate and Doug Baldwin are both impending free agents, but the Seahawks can do better at receiver anyway. I’m sure Cris Carter would agree.
