Go to 2014 NFL Draft Rumors: Picks 17-32

  1. Houston Texans:
5/9: “For those asking about HOU drafting Louis Nix, keep in mind O’Brien said he expects to play nickel 70%. Too few snaps to take a NT at #33.” – Lance Zierlein, Sports Talk 790

5/9: Adam Schefter says Houston’s likely pick is Louis Nix. That makes sense, but we’re hearing Stephon Tuitt or Marqise Lee. Regardless, it’s almost certainly not going to be a quarterback.

5/9: Barring a trade, the Texans will decide between Stephon Tuitt and Marqise Lee at No. 33, according to Charlie Campbell.

5/9: Ryan Mallett is not available for a trade, according to Ed Werder.

5/9: “Texans listening to offers and open to moving the top pick in the second round.” – Adam Schefter

5/8: “From what I hear from the Texans, theres still a chance at a trade for No. 1. Talks will heat up when they are on the clock.” – Ian Rapoport

5/8: “It’s “highly unlikely” that Falcons will trade up to 1.” – Ian Rapoport.

5/8: “Second source says nothing doing at the moment on Mallett to Houston. We’ll watch how it plays out. Makes sense if Clowney is No. 1.” – Tom Curran, CSN NE

5/8: “A source tells me Ryan Mallett to the Texans may soon be done.” – Tom Curran, CSN NE

5/8: “Houston is now locked in on its player and is not expecting a trade, per sources. Texans happy to sit at 1 and take player it wants.” – Ian Rapoport

5/8: “In a trade for top pick, Texans are hoping to get a 1st-round swap and picks in 2nd and 3rd rounds this year and a No. 1 in 2015.” – John McClain. It’s actually more than that; it would be surprising if Houston dropped its asking price so drastically all of a sudden.

5/7: The Texans are not considering Khalil Mack or Johnny Manziel at No. 1, according to Charlie Campbell. Go here for more in our NFL Draft Rumor Mill.

5/7: Echoing what we’ve been reporting for weeks now, Ed Werder said that the Texans want a Robert Griffin-type package for the No. 1 pick.

5/7: The Texans want to trade down and select Khalil Mack, according to league media sources. Once again, Houston wants a Robert Griffin-type deal for the No. 1 pick because it’s content to take Jadeveon Clowney at No. 1.

5/6: Bob McNair loves Johnny Manziel, but he’s allowing the coaching staff and general manager to make the call, according to Adam Caplan.

5/5: NFL.com’s Gil Brandt predicts that Khalil Mack will be drafted ahead of Jadeveon Clowney.

5/4: “In talking to people who know Texans GM Rick Smith well, I no longer believe its a certainty that Jadeveon Clowney would be their 1st pick.” – Ian Rapoport

5/4: The Texans aren’t sold on Jadeveon Clowney in the 3-4, according to Charley Casserly. However, Casserly believes (correctly) that Clowney will be the pick at No. 1 if Houston can’t move down.

5/2: “I do not believe Khalil Mack can be dismissed from the conversation at the No. 1 pick.” – Adam Schefter. This sounds fun, but it’s pretty much a certainty that the Texans will be picking Jadeveon Clowney, barring a Robert Griffin-type trade offer.

5/2: The Texans and Falcons will not be working together on a trade for the first-overall pick, per 610 Houston. We reported days ago that Houston wasn’t trading the No. 1 pick, barring a Robert Griffin-type deal.

5/2: “I’ve been saying since December, and will continue to say with a week out that I believe Johnny Manziel will be Houston’s pick in the 1st RD.” – Shawn Zobel

5/1: The Texans are considering passing on a quarterback in the second round because they believe a first-round prospect will fall to them at No. 33. Go here for more in our NFL Draft Rumor Mill.

4/30: Houston’s pick is down to Jadeveon Clowney and Johnny Manziel, according to John McClain, Houston Chronicle. Again, this pick is almost certain to be Clowney.

4/29: If Texans don’t trade down, Garoppolo could be the guy – PFT

4/28: The Texans are expected to draft Jadeveon Clowney despite the Atlanta trade rumors, according to Chris Mortensen. “The coaches cant wait to get their hands on him.”

4/28: There’s a 40-percent chance that the Falcons trade up for Jadeveon Clowney, according to Peter King. A trusted source laughed at this speculated trade.

4/25: “I have my doubts about the Texans-Falcons rumor. That smells like Rick Smith trying to create a market there.” – WF source

4/24: “Teams expect Texans to trade down, maybe to Falcons at 6.” – Ed Werder

4/24: Adam Schefter says the Texans will pick Jadeveon Clowney or Khalil Mack, or trade down. Mack won’t be the selection at No. 1 overall, so if Houston stays put, Clowney will be the choice.

4/23: “Good chance Texans move down. Trade similar to Giants-Chargers trade, preaarnged to take Clowney for some other team.” – Gil Brandt, NFL.com

4/22: The Texans have met with Dee Ford twice thus far (Combine, pre-draft visit). Go here for the entire NFL Draft Prospect Meetings List. Ford will be an option for the Texans at No. 33 if they take a quarterback with the first pick. That’s not the scenario I have happening in my 2014 NFL Mock Draft.

4/21: “The Texans stand a good shot of landing Teddy Bridgewater at 33. Thus it makes no sense to pass on Jadeveon Clowney with the first pick.” – Charlie Campbell

4/21: Adam Schefter said that he expects the first four picks in the 2014 NFL Draft to be Jadeveon Clowney, Greg Robinson, Khalil Mack and Sammy Watkins in some order.

4/21: A friend of general manager Rick Smith told Peter King that the Texans prefer Khalil Mack over Jadeveon Clowney. This is 100-percent smoke.

4/18: “The Texans could wait until the second round for their quarterback, and the level of interest in Tom Savage lately might indicate early second round could be an option.” – Tania Ganguli, ESPN Texans

4/17: The “prevailing thought around the league” is that the Texans will pick Jadeveon Clowney, according to Adam Schefter.

4/15: John McClain, who has said all along that the Texans will be picking a quarterback, has mocked Jadeveon Clowney to Houston. “The most extraordinary physical specimen since Tyrannosaurus Rex!”

4/14: Johnny Manziel is not in play for the Texans at No. 1 overall, according to Adam Schefter.

4/14: “Johnny Manziel is in play anywhere from No. 3 with Jacksonville to the Rams’ second first-round pick at No. 13.” – Adam Schefter

4/14: The Texans, Jaguars, Browns and Raiders are all “strongly considering” passing on a quarterback in Round 1 and waiting until Round 2 to address that need.

4/2: Bill O’Brien called Jadeveon Clowney a “team guy” during South Carolina’s Pro Day. However, Clowney, by most accounts, did not look great in the linebacker drills.

3/28: “No way Texans trade with Buffalo to ninth.” – John McClain

3/28: Long-time NFL writer Dan Pompei is reporting that the Texans are “trying hard” to trade down and may have found a partner in the Bills. Buffalo would likely be targeting Jadeveon Clowney, as it could obtain one of the top four quarterbacks at No. 9 overall. Having Clowney on the team would give the Bills one of the league’s best pass rushes. The Texans, meanwhile, could still get a quarterback with the ninth pick.

3/22: “By signing quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and trading Matt Schaub to Oakland, the Texans have given another indication they plan to use their first-round pick on a quarterback.” – John McClain

3/19: “I’m told 3/4’s through Blake Bortles workout Houston Texans coach Bill O’Brien let it be known “I’ve seen all I need to see.” – Tony Pauline

3/19: “Blake Bortles impressed a contingent of NFL people, including Texans coach Bill OBrien and general manager Rick Smith.” – John McClain

3/19: “I still believe Texans will draft a QB with first pick. I have no clue who it’ll be. They have not ruled out any of the top three.” – John McClain

3/18: “I doubt Teddy Bridgewater’s pro day will have much to do with Texans’ decision. They can watch every game he played and have private workout.” – John McClain

3/17: “Scouts texts me at end of UL pro-day, ‘Bortles was my #1 QB yesterday & is still my #1 QB today’ ..big disappointment in Bridgewater workout.” – Tony Pauline

3/9: “I told you last week Texans wouldn’t be signing Matt Cassel. And they won’t be trading for Ryan Mallett, either. … If Texans are going to try to trade for a QB, I think Browns Brian Hoyer would be the most likely target. Spent three years with Bill OBrien at New England.” – John McClain

3/8: “On the Ryan Mallett-Houston rumors that are out there Source says that the interest is real, but nothing is definite.” – Nick Underhill, Mass Live

3/7: “Bridgewater, Bortles and Manziel are being seriously considered by Texans for top pick. Long way to go. Nobody eliminated from list.” – John McClain

3/6: “From talking to guys I trust, I just don’t think Manziel is the fit for the Texans.” – Todd McShay

3/6: “Texans are considering lots of QBs to back up first round pick. They may sign two veteran back ups to go with the rook.” – John McClain

3/6: “Looking more and more like Texans go with best player on their board (likely Clowney) and a QB later in the draft. Traits usually win out.” – Lance Zierlein

3/4: “Khalil Mack’s pro day performance put him in top-pick coversation.” – Gil Brandt

3/3: “I’ve been saying 4 weeks and I will say until I believe differently, but the Texans are taking a quarterback. I’ll be shocked if they don’t.” – John McClain

2/23: “Sitting at workout & impressed as hell by timing Blake Bortles is showing with strange receivers…has a lot of teams in attendance buzzing.” – Tony Pauline

2/21: “Bill O’Brien and Rick Smith will take the highest player on their board, and that player will be a quarterback.” – John McClain. McClain also said Johnny Manziel doesn’t fit O’Brien’s offense, but hinted that Manziel could convince Houston to take him.

2/20: Blake Bortles and Johnny Manziel are the favorites for the No. 1 pick according to CBS’ Dane Brugler.

2/19: “WalterFootball.com has spoken with sources with two of the four quarterback-needy teams picking in the top five, and both of those teams are rating Central Florida’s Blake Bortles as the top signal-caller over Louisville’s Teddy Brigewater and Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel. However, both of those teams see flaws in all three quarterbacks to the point that these sources think their organizations would get a better player by passing on the quarterbacks.” – Charlie Campbell

2/11: “Broke down a dozen TAMU games & can say I see no justification for taking Johnny Manziel w/1st pick; too many floaters, forced passes, etc.” – Tony Pauline. Mel Kiper recently said Manziel is the “consensus” No. 1 quarterback. Apparently not.

2/6: “If the Texans do end up taking a QB, don’t be surprised if it’s UCF’s Blake Bortles over Louisville’s Teddy Bridgewater.” – Todd McShay

2/6: “Wade Phillips told owner Bob McNair when he interviewed for the job that Bill OBrien landed that they should draft Texas A&Ms Johnny Manziel, suggesting he could have the same impact Earl Campbell once had on the Oilers.” – Dale Robertson, Houston Chronicle

2/4: “If I had to bet money I would bet on Bortles. He likes his size and arm and he played under O’Leary who was a big mentor for O’Brien.” – Lance Zierlein

2/4: The Texans are leaning toward Blake Bortles or Johnny Manziel, according to Russ Lande.

2/4: “WalterFootball.com has spoken with a number of the quarterback-needy teams in the top 10, and a lot of them are taking a liking to Bortles over the other top quarterback prospects. These sources feel that Bortles has the best physical skill set for the NFL as he possesses the best combination of size and athletic ability.” – Charlie Campbell.

1/31: “Some even view Khalil Mack as a dark horse candidate for the Texans at No. 1 overall.” – Rob Rang, CBS

1/30: “Each day I get asked multiple times: Who are Texans drafting? I tell them 1 of the 3 top QBs. Forget about any other position.” – John McClain, Houston Chronicle.

1/27: “Perhaps Bill O’Brien feels differently, but from what I hear they aren’t fans of LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger. If the Texans reach on a quarterback in the first round, I bet it will be Bortles. I still think they’re more inclined to go with a veteran.” – Charlie Campbell via sources

1/26: “Teams that WalterFootball.com has heard could be interested in trading for Roethlisberger include the Houston Texans and Arizona Cardinals. The Texans selection at the top of the second round and a 2015 conditional pick could mimic what the Chiefs gave for Alex Smith last year. For more on the Ben Roethlisberger trade rumor, click the link.” – Charlie Campbell

1/24: “Still early but source beleves if its up to Bill O’Brien expect Blake Bortles/UCF at 1st pick or Zach Mettenberger/LSU at the top of rnd 2.” – Tony Pauline

1/24: “Bortles is also a Bill OBrien type of passer and Houston is a franchise in desperate need of a signal caller. The owner would prefer Johnny Manziel.” – Tony Pauline

1/24: The Texans feel as though they need to improve the following positions: quarterback, right tackle, edge rusher and nickel corner.

1/24: General manager Rick Smith was scouting Teddy Bridgewater at the Russell Athletic Bowl.

1/24: “Rick Smith has scouted any quarterback he can draft with the No. 1 pick.” – Adam Schefter.

1/24: “In the event that the Texans trade way down, they won’t be taking Louis Nix. “They feel they can land NTs later and the value isn’t there for a first-round pick.” – Charlie Campbell

  2. St. Louis Rams:
5/8: “On a more serious note, unless Clowney is there at No. 2, looks like Rams’ trade options are more likely at No. 13.” – Jim Thomas

5/8: Jeff Fisher, appearing on stage along with Sam Bradford at a pre-draft party, told everyone that Bradford is “our guy.”

5/7: The Rams want to move down to take Jake Matthews, according to league media sources. This is pretty much a combination of two recycled stories; league media sources tend to reycle other reports and take all the credit when possible. This is a legit scoop steal though; St. Louis would love to move down, and Jim Thomas already noted Matthews to be a prospect of interest.

5/7: The Buccaneers are expected to target Johnny Manziel in a move up to No. 2, per Pro Football Talk. This is obviously just a guess, as Sammy Watkins could also be the target. People like that or they dont like that, I dont know.” – Vikings’ head coach Mike Zimmer on Johnny Manziel’s Pro Day. If this is indeed how Zimmer feels about Manziel, this makes it three quarterback-needy teams in the top 10 that wouldn’t draft him (we know of two others). This makes it seem that Manziel is in for a draft-day fall. I have him going No. 26 in my 2014 NFL Mock Draft.

2/15: “I think there’s a chance the Vikings could trade back from No. 8 and pick up another choice or two in the process. That’s especially likely if the top QBs are gone by No. 8, since the number of underclassmen in this draft have pushed the depth to a point where the Vikings can probably get a good defensive player at, say, No. 12 or 13.” – Ben Goessling, ESPN

2/15: “The Vikings’ needs (other than QB) are on the defensive side of the ball — which GM Rick Spielman essentially admitted on Friday — and if they found themselves unable to get a good QB or a top 10-caliber defensive player at No. 8, it’s as easy to envision them trading back as it is to see them taking Sammy Watkins.” – Ben Goessling, ESPN

2/13: “Mallett and Adrian Peterson have a friendly relationship through a mutual coaching connection, and Vikings general manager Rick Spielman has done a number of deals with the Patriots. 2/4: “With a new head coach and a new offensive coordinator in the fold, with starting left guard Charlie Johnson scheduled to hit unrestricted free agency on March 11 and with a full complement of draft choices plus Seattles third-rounder from the Percy Harvin trade, it would not surprise me in the least to see the Vikings add an offensive guard this offseason.” – Mike Wobschall, Vikings.com

1/30: “The Vikings took Rhodes in Round 1 last year, and if there’s a good cornerback available at No. 8, they could look in that direction if they can’t find a quarterback. … Someone like Oklahoma State’s Justin Gilbert could be a good fit for the Vikings in the first round.” – Ben Goessling, ESPN
