2024 Fantasy Football Busts (Aug. 27):
This is a list of my top 2024 fantasy football busts – players you should avoid unless they fall far in your draft. The Average Draft Position (ADP) is found on FantasyPros.com. I was dead on with some of my busts in 2022, when I said to avoid J.K. Dobbins, Ezekiel Elliott, and David Montgomery, though I whiffed on Josh Jacobs. Last year was a mixed bag with Cooper Kupp, Javonte Williams and Aaron Jones being successful bust picks, while other selections had half-decent seasons.
People are excited about Derrick Henry enough to draft him in the second round? Why? Henry was splitting touches with Tyjae Spears last season. Now a year older, Henry will be running behind an offensive line that lost three starters to free agency. This is a ‘member berry pick if I’ve ever seen one. ‘Member when Henry was a great running back? Yeah, I do, but that was a few years ago.
De’Von Achane has serious upside, but there’s also a very low floor because of how brittle he is. Miami also won’t be running the ball as well in 2024 because it lost a couple of starting offensive linemen to free agency. Meanwhile, some defensive departures mean that the Dolphins won’t be able to easily run out the clock in the second half, which is what they did often last year.
Nick Chubb may not play this year. Even if he does, he’s at major risk to re-injure himself. He’s coming off a brutal knee injury in which he tore many ligaments. It’ll be shocking if he even sees the field prior to November.
Mike Evans is coming off a great year, but there’s reason to believe that he’s due for regression. Evans is 31, which is usually the age in which speed receivers decline. He also won’t have the luxury of Dave Canales coaching him again. Instead, it’ll be Liam Coen, whose offenses often emphasize slot receivers. Chris Godwin will be stationed in the slot this year, so it’s reasonable to expect Godwin and Evans to have similar production.
Anyone who drafts Travis Kelce in the third round wasn’t paying attention last year. Kelce was dreadful during the regular season. Sure, he came alive in the playoffs, but he’s now a year older, and he’s still distracted by Taylor Swift. Also, everyone seems to remember the Kelce from 2022. The reason he was so good that year was because the Chiefs had nothing at receiver. That’s no longer the case with Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy and Marquise Brown at Patrick Mahomes’ disposal.
I don’t like drafting running backs on bad teams. The Patriots certainly qualify, and one of the reasons they’re a bad team is their dreadful offensive line. There is no bargain to be had with Stevenson, so he’s someone to avoid.
There’s a lot to hate about Alvin Kamara. He tends to miss a few games every year. He loses goal-line touches to Taysom Hill. His coaching staff sucks. All of this was prevalent last year. Now, he has to deal with one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL. I don’t mind him in PPR, but I’m avoiding him in standard leagues.
We saw Lamar Jackson regress after winning MVP in 2019, and history may repeat itself. Jackson declined in 2020 because the offensive line lost several pieces, and that’s exactly what occurred this offseason. Baltimore lost three blockers to free agency, so that could adversely affect Jackson.
Rachaad White is another player who will be impacted by Dave Canales’ departure. I like White in PPR formats, but if there are no points per receptions involved, he becomes a very pedestrian pick in the third round. White isn’t a very good runner, and his interior offensive line figures to be rather poor this year.
To the person who drafts Kyler Murray at the end of the sixth round or beginning of the seventh round in my league: Good luck finding another quarterback once Murray is injured by mid-October. I don’t mind Murray late because of his upside, but drafting him before Round 8 is insane.
