Live 2020 NFL Draft Grades: Round 7

These Live 2020 NFL Draft Grades will be posted minutes after each pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Follow @walterfootball for updates.

2020 NFL Draft Grades - Round: Picks 1-16 | Picks 17-32 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | NFL Draft Team Grades

  1. Cincinnati Bengals: Markus Bailey, LB, Purdue – B+ Grade
Markus Bailey would’ve been chosen earlier than this if he didn’t miss the 2019 season with a knee injury. The Bengals could be getting a nice bargain here because of that, but the knee issues could linger.

  2. Washington Redskins: Kamren Curl, S, Arkansas – B+ Grade
Kamren Curl would’ve been a solid, mid-round prospect if it weren’t for speed concerns, but he’s a solid choice in the seventh frame. He might be able to provide nice depth in the secondary if he makes the roster.

  3. San Francisco 49ers: Jauan Jennings, WR, Tennessee – C+ Grade
The 49ers traded away Marquise Goodwin, so it makes sense that they’d target a receiver late in the draft. Jauan Jennings is another prospect with speed concerns, but he has nice size (6-3, 215) at least. I don’t think he’ll make the 53-man roster, but crazier things have happened.

  4. New York Giants: Carter Coughlin, DE/OLB, Minnesota – B+ Grade
Carter Coughlin needs to bulk up and get stronger, but he has some talent and skill that could allow him to stick in the NFL as a rotational edge rusher. I like this pick in the seventh round.

  5. Baltimore Ravens: Geno Stone, S, Iowa – A+ Grade
Geno Stone has incredible instincts, so naturally, he fell to the Ravens in the seventh round. He’s not very athletic, but he’s a smart player who can potentially be a mediocre starter at some point. This is a steal.

  6. Los Angeles Chargers: K.J. Hill, WR, Ohio State – A+ Grade
I look forward to Charlie Campbell’s Why the Slide on K.J. Hill because he could’ve been chosen in the third round. He’s a great route runner, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he makes an NFL roster and contributes sometime soon despite being a seventh-round pick.

  7. Carolina Panthers: Stantley Thomas-Oliver, CB, Florida International – B+ Grade
Stantley Thomas-Oliver needs to be developed, but the potential is there. He has nice size (6-2) and he runs a 4.48 40. The Panthers might be able to turn him into a viable NFL player. He certainly has the upside.
  8. Arizona Cardinals: Eno Benjain, RB, Arizona State – B+ Grade
I wasn’t a fan of Eno Benjamin when I thought teams might take him in the fourth round. He’s a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none back, but he’s a solid value in the seventh frame. He could end up becoming a decent backup for Arizona.

  9. Jacksonville Jaguars: Chris Claybrooks, CB, Memphis – C- Grade
Chris Claybrooks is not in my top 600, so I can’t say I like this pick at all. However, it’s the seventh round, so it’s not a horrible time to draft a no-name special-teams player.

  10. Tennessee Titans: Cole McDonald, QB, Hawaii – B Grade
Cole McDonald is a smart quarterback, so if he sticks in the NFL, he’ll be a nice backup who will be beneficial in the meeting room. However, his arm strength is horrible, so he may just become a coach.

  11. Minnesota Vikings: Kenney Willekes, DE, Michigan State – A+ Grade
Kenny Willekes is yet another player I’m looking forward to seeing featured on Why the Slide. I imagine some injuries may have had a factor in it, but Willekes should’ve been chosen in the third round. This pick has tons of upside, so I love it.

  12. Chicago Bears: Arlington Hambright, OT, Colorado – C- Grade
I never imagined that Arlington Hambright, who sounds like a Harry Potter character, would ever be drafted. He should’ve been a UDFA, but I can at least appreciate the Bears addressing their diminished offensive line.

  13. Chicago Bears: Lachavious Simmons, G, Tennessee State – D Grade
I’ll be honest, I never heard of this man. I’m not even sure if he’s a real player. Certainly, he could have been obtained in UDFA, but it’s the seventh round, so it doesn’t matter too much.

  14. Atlanta Falcons: Sterling Hofrichter, P, Syracuse – C Grade
Punter pick. Meh. The Falcons needed a punter, but they grow on trees.

  15. Washington Redskins: James Smith-Williams, DE, N.C. State – A Grade
James Smith-Williams is a skilled and smart player, but injuries have wrecked his draft stock. He would’ve gone a few rounds earlier than this if health wasn’t a problem. It’s a shame, but maybe he’ll end up being a rotational edge rusher. I like taking a shot on him in the last round.

  16. New England Patriots: Dustin Woodard, C/G, Memphis – B Grade
Yet another versatile offensive lineman for the Patriots! I’m shocked. Anyway, Dustin Woodard was a stellar blocker for Memphis, but we’ll see if his play in the AAC translates to the NFL. This is a fine pick in the final round.

  17. Dallas Cowboys: Ben DiNucci, QB, James Madison – B Grade
Ben DiNucci transferred from Pittsburgh to James Madison. He improved his play, albeit against lesser competition. He probably won’t make it, but Mike McCarthy likes developing late-round prospects.

  18. Pittsburgh Steelers: Carlos Davis, DT, Nebraska – B Grade
Carlos Davis offers very little as a pass rusher, but he’s a solid run stuffer. If the Steelers need an extra defensive lineman to clog the trenches, Davis will be able to make the 53-man roster.

  19. Philadelphia Eagles: Casey Toohill, DE/OLB, Stanford – B Grade
I’m not sure about Casey Toohill’s fit in the Eagles’ 4-3. He’s more of a 3-4 player, but I’m sure the Eagles have a plan for him to rush the quarterback somehow. Philadelphia needed to upgrade its pass rush, and Toohill is a nice value.

  20. Los Angeles Rams: Clay Johnston, LB, Baylor – A- Grade
Clay Johnston is another player who dropped because of numerous injuries. The Rams needed a linebacker in the wake of Corey Littleton’s departure, and Johnston could eventually step in and contribute if he can remain healthy.

  21. Detroit Lions: Jashon Cornell, DT, Ohio State – A Grade
It’s unclear why more attention wasn’t paid to Jashon Cornell, as he may have suffered from not being able to show off at his pro day because of the pandemic. Cornell was a disruptive player last year who was able to generate a pass rush. He’s a bit undersized, but he should’ve been chosen earlier.

  22. Green Bay Packers: Vernon Scott, CB/S, TCU – C- Grade
I didn’t view Vernon Scott as a draftable prospect. He’ll be able to play on special teams, but I wouldn’t count on him making the 53-man roster.

  23. Kansas City Chiefs: Bopete Keyes, CB, Tulane – C Grade
Bopete Keyes doesn’t appear to be an NFL player. He has nice size at 6-1, 195, and he has long arms, but he’s not a pro athlete, so I don’t see him making the 53-man roster.

  24. New York Giants: T.J. Brunson, LB, South Carolina – B Grade
I didn’t think T.J. Brunson would be drafted because of injury concerns. I’d say the seventh round is the right place for him, as he’ll have to contribute on special teams to make the Giants’ roster right away.

  25. Buffalo Bills: Dane Jackson, CB, Pittsburgh – B+ Grade
I’ve constantly had Dane Jackson in the sixth round of my mock draft, so this is a mini-bargain. A team can never have too much cornerback depth, so I like Buffalo’s latest pick.

  26. New Orleans Saints: Tommy Stevens, QB, Mississippi State – B- Grade
Taysom Hill will take over for Drew Brees in the future, but the Saints needed a developmental quarterback for the future. Or rather, a developmental Taysom Hill. Tommy Stevens is a lot like Hill, minus the passing ability.

  27. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Chapelle Russell, LB, Temple – C- Grade
Normally, I’d say that a player coming off double ACL surgeries is someone who slipped in the draft, but Chapelle Russell isn’t even a good player. I don’t get this pick, but it’s the middle of the seventh round.

  28. Green Bay Packers: Jonathan Garvin, DE/OLB, Miami – B+ Grade
Jonathan Garvin was a very inconsistent player at Miami. He has nice ability, so if he’s coached up, he could be a valuable rotational piece in the edge-rushing group.

  29. Tennessee Titans: Chris Jackson, S, Marshall – C Grade
I didn’t have Chris Jackson in my top 600. He’s a UDFA player, obviously, but we’re getting near the end of the draft, so it’s not terrible to take someone like this.

  30. Minnesota Vikings: Nate Stanley, QB, Iowa – C Grade
Nate Stanley is a weak-armed quarterback with poor accuracy. It’s difficult to imagine him sticking around in the NFL. Perhaps he’ll be a coach in the near future.

  31. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Raymond Calais, RB, Louisiana-Lafayette – C+ Grade
Raymond Calais made a name for himself at the combine by running one of the fastest 40s, but he’s a small running back (5-8, 188) who isn’t very skilled. I wouldn’t have drafted him, but he was at least in consideration.

  32. Miami Dolphins: Malcolm Perry, RB/WR, Navy – C Grade
It’s unclear what position Malcolm Perry will play in Miami. He was a quarterback at Navy, but he’ll have to move over to running back or receiver in the pros. I didn’t think Perry was a draftable player.

  33. New York Giants: Chris Williamson, CB, Minnesota – C Grade
Chris Williamson wasn’t on the draftable player list for me. He’s an injury-prone player who misses a ton of tackles. I don’t really get the appeal with him, but we’ve reached the compensatory portion of the seventh round.

  34. Los Angeles Rams: Sam Sloman, K, Miami of Ohio – C- Grade
The Rams needed a kicker, but there was a better kicker available. Not good.

  35. Minnesota Vikings: Brian Cole, LB/S, Mississippi State – B Grade
Brian Cole is a tweener who struggles in coverage, but he at least does one thing well, which is play well in run support. He might have a spot on some team’s roster in the NFL.

  36. Los Angeles Rams: Tremayne Anchrum, OT/G, Clemson – B+ Grade
Tremayne Anchrum played at tackle at Clemson, but he’ll likely have to move inside in the NFL. Anchrum plays with good technique, but the athleticism is rather lacking. Still, he might be able to latch on with the Rams because of his good technique.

  37. Seattle Seahawks: Stephen Sullivan, TE, LSU – C- Grade
Another tight end!? Did the Seahawks learn from the Drafting for Dummies book written by Ryan Pace? I don’t understand why the Seahawks need so many tight ends, and how Stephen Sullivan will fit into the roster. I don’t dislike Sullivan, but just stop it with the tight ends, Seattle.

  38. Denver Broncos: Tyrie Cleveland, WR, Florida – B+ Grade
Tyrie Cleveland had a ton of acclaim coming out of high school, but never lived up to it at Florida. He’s a great athlete, however, so why not take a shot on him with one of the final few picks in the draft?

  39. Minnesota Vikings: Kyle Hinton, G, Washburn – C+ Grade
Kyle Hinton has nice technique, but he’s a major project because he’s not nearly strong enough to be in the NFL. I don’t think he’ll make the cut, but I don’t blame the Vikings for taking a chance on him.

  40. Denver Broncos: Derrek Tuszka, DE/OLB, North Dakota State – B+ Grade
Derrek Tuszka got himself drafted with a stellar combine. He performed very well in the on-field drills. He could’ve been taken a round earlier, so I think the Broncos got a nice value pick with a player who could contribute defensively at some point. Tuszka will have to do well on special teams in the meantime.

  41. New York Giants: Tae Crowder, LB, Georgia – C Grade
Tae Crowder wasn’t a draftable prospect, but it’s the final pick in the draft, so who cares? Crowder is still learning how to play linebacker after switching from running back, so maybe he’ll be something more than a special-teams player at some point. But probably not.
