Live 2020 NFL Draft Grades: Round 4

These Live 2020 NFL Draft Grades will be posted minutes after each pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Follow @walterfootball for updates.

2020 NFL Draft Grades - Round: Picks 1-16 | Picks 17-32 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | NFL Draft Team Grades

  1. Cincinnati Bengals: Akeem Davis-Gaither, LB, Appalachian State – B+ Grade
Another linebacker is a logical route for the Bengals to take. They need to do everything in their power to slow down Lamar Jackson, so upgrading their poor linebacking corps was essential. Akeem Davis-Gather, who can rush the quarterback well, was someone who had third-round discussion, so this is a nice bargain to kick off Round 4.

  2. Washington Redskins: Saahdiq Charles, OT, LSU – A- Grade
This is another solid pick to kick off the fourth round. The Redskins need to replace Trent Williams, and they’re getting a talented offensive lineman who easily could’ve gone in the second round had it not been for character issues. Charles will be a great pick if he can stay clean and work hard.

By the way, the Redskins traded Trent Williams to the 49ers for a fifth this year and a third in 2021. It’s a great trade for San Francisco, but I have to wonder if Joe Staley is going to retire. I’ll grade this trade once the draft is over.

  3. Las Vegas Raiders: John Simpson, G, Clemson – B+ Grade
The Raiders traded up about a dozen picks for John Simpson. There’s a decent chance he wouldn’t have been available at their selection, so I think this is a fine move. The Raiders are shopping Gabe Jackson, and Simpson is talented enough to start in place of Jackson on Day 1.

  4. New York Giants: Darnay Holmes, CB, UCLA – A- Grade
Dave Gettleman’s excellent draft continues. Darnay Holmes is a cornerback I mocked in the third round consistently, so this is very good value atop Round 4. The need is obvious; despite the James Bradberry signing, cornerback had to be addressed, and Holmes should definitely help to strengthen the position at nickel.

  5. Miami Dolphins: Solomon Kindley, G, Georgia – A+ Grade
The Dolphins apparently felt it necessary to trade up for a guard after the Raiders did the very same thing. This was a smart decision. Solomon Kindley, a large lineman who moves well for his size, could have easily gone in the second or early third round. The Dolphins are addressing a huge need with him.

  6. Los Angeles Chargers: Joshua Kelley, RB, UCLA – B Grade
The fit is obvious, as the Chargers lost Melvin Gordon and needed to find a running back to pair with Austin Ekeler. Kelley was projected as a fourth-round choice, so it makes sense for the Chargers to take a local product at this spot.

  7. Carolina Panthers: Troy Pride, CB, Notre Dame – B+ Grade
Troy Pride was very inconsistent at Notre Dame, but he ran a very fast 40 time at the combine and showed nice potential. The Panthers needed to add a cornerback in the wake of James Bradberry’s departure, and Pride makes sense in this spot as a third- or fourth-round prospect.

  8. Arizona Cardinals: Leki Fotu, DT, Utah – B Grade
Leki Fotu doesn’t offer anything as a pass rusher, but that doesn’t matter very much in the fourth round. Fotu is a stout run plugger, which is something the Cardinals needed to help defend San Francisco’s ground-heavy attack.

  9. Cleveland Browns: Harrison Bryant, TE, Florida Atlantic – B Grade
The Browns want to run two-tight end sets, so it makes sense for them to obtain another player at the position to go along with Austin Hooper. Harrison Bryant is a pass-catching H-back who could end up being a nice weapon for Baker Mayfield.

  10. Jacksonville Jaguars: Ben Bartch, G, St. John’s – A- Grade
There are some solid guard choices being made atop Round 4. Ben Bartch is another one. He has a nice frame and good potential. Level of competition is a question, but not much of one in the fourth round. I think Bartch could’ve gone in the second.

  11. Minnesota Vikings: D.J. Wonnum, DE, South Carolina – C+ Grade
I had D.J. Wonnum in the sixth round, so this is a bit of a reach. It’s not an egregious one, however, and the Vikings are at least filling a need with Everson Griffen gone. Wonnum has nice athleticism and potential, but he’s raw.

  12. Denver Broncos: Albert Okwuegbunam, TE, Missouri – B+ Grade
Yet another weapon for Drew Lock! This is a fine one, as Albert Okwuegbunam was once projected to be a first-round pick. This was obviously wrong, and he was eventually corrected to be a third- or fourth-round prospect, but there’s no doubt the potential is there for Okwuegbunam to be a solid starter in the NFL.

  13. Atlanta Falcons: Mykal Walker, LB, Fresno State – D Grade
I’m not going to give this an O’Brien, but I don’t like this pick at all. Mykal Walker is a smart linebacker, but I don’t think he has the physical tools to be someone who can remain in the NFL. I had him in the seventh round.

  14. New York Jets: Lamical Perine, RB, Florida – B Grade
Lamical Perine is a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none running back who was consistently mocked in the fourth round. He could end up being a solid backup behind Le’Veon Bell. This is a fine pick, but not one that’s very exciting.

  15. Detroit Lions: Logan Stenberg, G, Kentucky – A Grade
Logan Stenberg had some questions about him being able to block speed rushers, but he answered those questions at the Senior Bowl. I thought he may have improved his stock to go as high as the second round, but apparently not. The Lions won’t complain, as they’re getting a potential starter in the middle of the draft.

  16. Indianapolis Colts: Jacob Eason, QB, Washington – B Grade
I wasn’t going to be a fan of Jacob Eason in the second round. The upside is there, but he has attitude and work ethic issues, which is just horrible for a quarterback to have. However, the fourth round makes much more sense for Eason. I wouldn’t count out Frank Reich developing Eason into a good NFL quarterback – as long as Eason wants it.

  17. Dallas Cowboys: Reggie Robinson, CB, Tulsa – B+ Grade
Reggie Robinson is a raw player, but he’s tall and athletic. He could end up being a good NFL starter, or he could be out of the league in two years. I like swinging for the fences on Day 3, and the Cowboys are potentially addressing a big need.

  18. Pittsburgh Steelers: Anthony McFarland Jr., RB, Maryland – C Grade
I think this is a bit too high for Anthony McFarland Jr., but he’s not an egregious reach. There were some reports that he has character concerns, but I’m not sure about those. McFarland is athletic and possesses upside, so he should be able to fit into Pittsburgh’s running back rotation somehow.

  19. New York Jets: James Morgan, QB, Florida International – A+ Grade
This is a steal. James Morgan is the quarterback teams should’ve been targeting in the third round as someone who has loads of potential. Morgan is a smart quarterback with a nice arm and great leadership skills. He could easily end up being a starter in the NFL, and he’s a nice project for the Jets to eventually flip into a second-round pick.

  20. Houston Texans: Charlie Heck, OT, North Carolina – B Grade
The Texans have finally upgraded Deshaun Watson’s pass protection. Well, maybe. Charlie Heck is a better run blocker than pass protector, so I’m not sure if Watson’s protection will improve. Still, Heck is a solid choice in the fourth frame.

  21. Philadelphia Eagles: K’Von Wallace, S, Clemson – B Grade
I thought the Eagles might go with a seeker here to catch the snitch. Instead, the Eagles actually made a semi-decent pick. K’Von Wallace makes sense as an athletic safety in the fourth round. With Malcolm Jenkins gone, Philadelphia needed help at the position.

  22. Buffalo Bills: Gabriel Davis, WR, Central Florida – B+ Grade
Gabriel Davis has great size (6-3, 212), and I thought he could be chosen in the third round. There’s some question about his ability to separate from coverage, but the potential is certainly there. This doesn’t fill a need, but Davis was one of the better players available.

  23. New York Jets: Cameron Clark, OT/G, Charlotte – C Grade
This is the first pick of the Jets’ that I don’t love or like. I don’t hate it, as protecting Sam Darnold is a priority, but Cameron Clark was a sixth- or seventh-round prospect for me. I don’t even think Clark can remain at tackle in the NFL, as he may have to move inside to guard.

  24. Minnesta Vikings: James Lynch, DT, Baylor – A+ Grade
I had James Lynch slotted to the Vikings in the third round. In fact, I mocked Lynch into the second round at some point. I think the Vikings liked Lynch enough to take him in the third frame, so this is a steal. Lynch is talented and could end up being a nice starter next to Michael Pierce.

  25. Arizona Cardinals: Rashard Lawrence, DT, LSU – B Grade
Rashard Lawrence was very inconsistent at LSU, but he flashed his potential at times. The Cardinals have been trying to replace Calais Campbell for years. They’ll be hoping Lawrence can live up to his potential to be that guy, but I wouldn’t be so optimistic. Still, Lawrence is a decent gamble at this juncture.

  26. Minnesota Vikings: Troy Dye, LB, Oregon – A Grade
The Vikings continue to make excellent picks in Round 4. Troy Dye is an athletic linebacker who easily could’ve been chosen in the third frame. Minnesota needed someone like Dye to help in coverage, so he should be a nice contributor.

  27. Seattle Seahawks: Colby Parkinson, TE, Stanford – C- Grade
I like Colby Parkinson as a pass-catching tight end prospect, so that saves this grade. But how many tight ends do the Seahawks need!? Sorry, I’m just mad about this dumb musical performance on ESPN. ESPN is trash.

  28. Atlanta Falcons: Jaylinn Hawkins, S, California – O’BRIEN Grade
Get ready for some bad grades because ESPN is trash and playing music to appease dumb people who don’t like football. This is a terrible pick. Jaylinn Hawkins was not a draftable prospect. He’s a slow safety who will have to play on special teams if he even makes the roster.

  29. Pittsburgh Steelers: Kevin Dotson, G, Louisiana-Lafayette – D Grade
Bad picks, bad draft coverage. This sucks. Kevin Dotson was a late-rounder or a UDFA talent. He’s strong, but plays with horrible technique. He’s a major project.

  30. Los Angeles Rams: Brycen Hopkins, TE, Purdue – B- Grade
I wonder if this will spell the end for Gerald Everett. Brycen Hopkins is an athletic, pass-catching tight end who could contribute to the offense in the near future. I had him in this range at times in my mock.

  31. Jacksonville Jaguars: Josiah Scott, CB, Michigan State – C Grade
It makes sense for the Jaguars to draft another cornerback, given their issues at the position. However, it seems like they have enough players to cover the slot, which is what Josiah Scott does best. I think another cornerback prospect would’ve been a better option.

  32. Kansas City Chiefs: L’Jarius Sneed, CB/S, Louisiana Tech – B+ Grade
I’m curious to see where the Chiefs use L’Jarius Sneed. He can play all over the secondary, but Kansas City needs a cornerback more than anything. Sneed, who is very athletic, should be able to help in that regard.

  33. Las Vegas Raiders: Amik Robertson, CB, Louisiana Tech – B Grade
If it wasn’t for injury concerns, Amik Robertson may have been chosen earlier than this. I had him slotted in the fifth round, but he makes sense here as a player with upside who can fill a position of need.

  34. Jacksonville Jaguars: Shaquille Quarterman, LB, Miami – B- Grade
Shaquille Quarterman is a solid player, but he’s not a good athlete at all. He can be a decent, two-down player for the Jaguars. He doesn’t have much upside, however, and he won’t fix Jacksonville’s need to improve its coverage.

  35. Houston Texans: John Reid, CB, Penn State – D Grade
Leave it to Bill O’Brien to select a seventh-round prospect in the fourth frame. John Reid is small and slow, so I don’t think he’ll make the cut in the NFL.

  36. Washington Redskins: Antonio Gandy-Golden, WR, Liberty – A+ Grade
This is a steal. Antonio Gandy-Golden was projected to go in the first round once upon a time. That projection was obviously wrong, as concerns about separation arose with Gandy-Golden, but he’s a very good football player and could help the Redskins’ lackluster receiving corps.

  37. Baltimore Ravens: Ben Bredeson, G, Michigan – A+ Grade
Surprise, surprise, the Ravens just made an excellent pick. Ben Bredeson is a guard with great technique and quickness. He should be able to become a solid starter in the NFL, so this is a steal. It also fills a need with Marshal Yanda retiring.

  38. Seattle Seahawks: DeeJay Dallas, RB, Miami – B Grade
Some expected the Seahawks to add a running back in the first round, and they definitely could have. I think this makes more sense, so they don’t have to give up on Rashaad Penny. DeeJay Dallas is a very shifty runner with decent upside. This is a solid pick.

  39. Philadelphia Eagles: Jack Driscoll, OT, Auburn – B Grade
Jack Driscoll needs to continue to get stronger for the NFL. He’s a developmental project who could eventually become a starter. I imagine he’ll likely be a swing tackle, however, but he makes sense here at the bottom of Round 4.

  40. Dallas Cowboys: Tyler Biadasz, C, Wisconsin – A+ Grade
As if this draft couldn’t go worse for Eagle fans, they just watched their team allow the arch rival Cowboys to move up to this spot and select their replacement for Travis Frederick. Biadasz was one of the best players on the board, so this is another great pick for Dallas and another dubious move by the Eagles.
