2014 NFL Mock Draft: Round 1 – Picks 17-32

The order of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft is based on my NFL Power Rankings.

  1. Baltimore Ravens: C.J. Mosley, ILB, Alabama
    The Ravens had their eye on Dont’a Hightower as a possible replacement for Ray Lewis a couple of years ago. Perhaps they’ll finally land an inside linebacker from Alabama. Baltimore took Arthur Brown in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, but this position could still be addressed because Daryl Smith happens to be a free agent.

  2. New York Jets: Eric Ebron, TE, North Carolina
    The Jets need to add more play-makers to the roster because Geno Smith is surrounded by the worst supporting cast in the NFL. The top weapon who can be added to the roster is Eric Ebron, a stud tight end out of North Carolina. Kellen Winslow proved to be an insufficient replacement for Dustin Keller, so this is a position New York will look to upgrade this offseason.

  3. Miami Dolphins: Zack Martin, OT/G, Notre Dame
    Zack Martin had an outstanding Senior Bowl, and there’s talk that despite his short arms, he could be used at left tackle. Worst-case scenario, he’s a stud guard. Miami needs help at both positions in the wake of the Richie Incognito-Jonathan Martin incident.

    Also, here’s something to keep in mind: As Charlie Campbell noted on our NFL Draft Rumors page, Dennis Hickey has a huge inclination to go for high-character players. If a player is perceived to be a thug, gang-banger or have a drug issue that could knock them off Miami’s board. I could see Zack Martin being a fit.

  4. Arizona Cardinals: Ra’Shede Hageman, DE/DT, Minnesota
    Darnell Dockett, 33 in May, is due $5.75 million this upcoming season. He’s no longer the pass-rusher he once was, and Arizona lacks a long-term replacement for him. That would change with the selection of Ra’Shede Hageman, who was a monster for Minnesota this past year. Even if the Cardinals keep Dockett at his high price, they could definitely use Hageman as a depth rotational player in 2014 before asking him to start in 2015 and beyond.

  5. Green Bay Packers: Louis Nix, NT, Notre Dame
    The Packers spent last year’s first-round pick on a defensive lineman, but that doesn’t mean that Ted Thompson won’t double dip there. B.J. Raji happens to be a free agent, and his price tag is simply too high for Green Bay. Louis Nix is a steal here for the Packers.

  6. Philadelphia Eagles: Kony Ealy, DE/OLB, Missouri
    The Eagles would love to address their secondary with this pick, but Kony Ealy is way too good to pass up. Ealy is the best player available, and he would fill a need anyway. The only linebacker who consistently put pressure on the quarterback was Trent Cole, and he won’t last beyond next year because he’s due $10 million in 2015. Another pass-rusher is currently needed anyway.

  7. Kansas City Chiefs: Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Florida State
    The Chiefs need another outside receiver to start across from Dwayne Bowe. I recently mocked Jace Amaro here, but I’ve been told that Kelvin Benjamin is way more likely to be chosen by Kansas City. Either player makes a ton of sense.

  8. Cincinnati Bengals: Taylor Lewan, OT, Michigan
    The Bengals will want to look at the left tackle position this offseason depending on what happens. Anthony Collins, currently manning that spot now, will be a free agent (go here to check out my 2014 NFL Free Agent Rankings). Cincinnati moved Andrew Whitworth inside to compensate for injuries, but the team may want to keep him there as he enters his mid-30s. A long-term blind-side protector is needed.

  9. San Diego Chargers: Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State
    The Chargers’ defense made every single quarterback look like a Pro Bowler earlier in the year. They have a dreadful cornerback situation, which could be remedied with the use of an early-round pick in May’s draft. They’re getting one of the top players available at a major position of need.

  10. Cleveland Browns: David Yankey, G/OT, Stanford
    Teams that spend early picks on quarterbacks usually take an offensive player to complement that signal-caller with their next selection. Think Matthew Stafford-Brandon Pettigrew, Sam Bradford-Rodger Saffold, Andrew Luck-Coby Fleener, etc. As noted in my Browns team needs page, Shawn Lauvao is a free agent, but he needed to be upgraded anyway. Both he and Oniel Cousins stunk it up at this position.

  11. New Orleans Saints: Calvin Pryor, S, Louisville
    The Saints spent last year’s first-round pick on a safety, but they could easily double dip at the position. Malcolm Jenkins will be a free agent in March, but he’s never lived up to expectations anyway. New Orleans needs to find a better player next to Kenny Vaccaro.

  12. Carolina Panthers: Odell Beckham, WR, LSU
    Steve Smith is slowing down, while Brandon LaFell hasn’t proven that he can be a consistent starter. Oh, and Ted Ginn, who hates me, happens to be a free agent. The Panthers need to bolster their receiving corps.

  13. New England Patriots: Jace Amaro, TE, Texas Tech
    With Aaron Hernandez gone forever and Rob Gronkowski coming off a serious knee injury, the Patriots may want to bring in another talented tight end. Jace Amaro could be the first tight end off the board, so he’s a steal at his juncture.

  14. San Francisco 49ers: Jason Verrett, CB, TCU
    The 49ers need to fix their secondary. Their group of cornerbacks isn’t very strong, as Carlos Rogers has understandably declined at 32. He’s due $6.25 million next year, so San Francisco could cut ties with him. The 49ers extended Tramaine Brock, but they’ll still need corner help.

  15. Denver Broncos: Ryan Shazier, LB, Ohio State
    Wesley Woodyard has looked out of place trying to play middle linebacker. Paris Lenon is a disaster. This is an area Denver may want to upgrade to help improve its defense, which couldn’t get off the field in the Super Bowl.

  16. Seattle Seahawks: Cyrus Kouandjio, OT, Alabama
    I’ve bashed Breno Giacomini for the past couple of years, but he really stepped up in the playoffs and blocked well for Russell Wilson. Unfortunately for the Seahawks, this just means that Giacomini could command more money in the spring, as he happens to be an impending free agent. If he’s not retained, Seattle will be in the market for a new right tackle.
