2014 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2

Last update: Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014. Major changes in all 4 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

The order of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft is based on my NFL Power Rankings.

*** This 2014 NFL Mock Draft (4 rounds) was updated Feb. 5. This mock draft will be updated at least once per week (Tuesday afternoons and other times for important events.). Check out old versions of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft in the archived mock draft section. Follow @walterfootball for updates. ***

  1. Houston Texans: Antonio Richardson, OT, Tennessee
As mentioned earlier, teams that spend early picks on quarterbacks often double up on offense. If the Texans decide to do that, they could certainly upgrade the right tackle position, which is a big problem area for them.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

  2. Washington Redskins: Stephon Tuitt, DE/DT, Notre Dame
The Redskins need help all over their defense, including up front. They had no push from their defensive line this past season.

  3. Cleveland Browns: Allen Robinson, WR, Penn State
The Browns desperately need a No. 2 receiver to upgrade Greg “Mr. Dependable” Little. There will be tons of options for them in Round 2.

Pick change; previously Brandin Cooks, WR

  4. Oakland Raiders: Scott Crichton, DE, Oregon State
No quarterback yet? Well, any signal-caller would be a reach at this point. Besides, as I mentioned, the Raiders need to add blue-chip players to their roster because they don’t have any currently under contract. Oakland needed another pass-rusher across from Lamarr Houston this past season, and now Houston happens to be an impending free agent.

Pick change; previously Aaron Donald, DT

  5. Atlanta Falcons: Xavier Su’a-Filo, G, UCLA
The Falcons have some major issues on the offensive line. Everyone wants to look at left tackle, but the guard position is an area that must be upgraded as well.

  6. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Brandin Cooks, WR, Oregon State
Mike Glennon’s options are rather limited once you get beyond Vincent Jackson and Mike Williams. The Buccaneers will be searching for a new No. 3 receiver this offseason.

Pick change; previously Odell Beckham, WR

  7. Jacksonville Jaguars: Ka’Deem Carey, RB, Arizona
Maurice Jones-Drew is an impending free agent (go here to check out my 2014 NFL Free Agent Rankings). He’ll likely want to leave such a terrible situation, so the Jaguars will need to find a new running back.

  8. Minnesota Vikings: Gabe Jackson, G, Mississippi State
The Vikings can help their new quarterback (as well as Adrian Peterson) with improved interior offensive line play. Charlie Johnson, the weak link on the unit, happens to be a free agent.

  9. Buffalo Bills: Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE, Washington
This offseason has to be all about building around E.J. Manuel. Buffalo already upgraded its offensive line; now it has to find a potent intermediate weapon for the second-year quarterback.

Pick change; previously Troy Niklas, TE

  10. Tennessee Titans: Tre Mason, RB, Auburn
There have been reports indicating that Chris Johnson will be cut this offseason. If that’s the case, Tennessee will obviously be searching for a new lead running back.

  11. New York Giants: Carlos Hyde, RB, Ohio State
The Giants are another team that will be hunting for a new running back. Andre Brown is a free agent, while David Wilson may not be ready for the 2014 season.

  12. St. Louis Rams: Dion Bailey, S, USC
St. Louis’ defense came on late in the season, but it struggled at times during the year for a couple of reasons. One was the play of safety Rodney McLeod. He wasn’t terrible, but it’s clear that the Rams need to find an upgrade next to T.J. McDonald.

Pick change; previously Loucheiz Purifoy, CB

  13. Detroit Lions: Travis Swanson, C, Arkansas
Dominic Raiola has seemingly been on Detroit’s roster forever, but he’ll be a 35-year-old free agent in March. The Lions will probably bring in a new center.

  14. Pittsburgh Steelers: Marcus Roberson, CB, Florida
The Steelers have to address the cornerback position. Ike Taylor was dreadful this past year, as the receivers he battled – save for A.J. Green, oddly enough – posted season-high totals against him.

Pick change; previously Jason Verrett, CB

  15. Dallas Cowboys: Lamarcus Joyner, S, Florida State
Dallas had horrible safety play all year. An upgrade in this area would have allowed it to beat Philadelphia in Week 17.

Pick change; previously Calvin Pryor, S

  16. Baltimore Ravens: Jordan Matthews, WR, Vanderbilt
It should be quite apparent that the Ravens desperately need help at receiver. Neither Jacoby Jones nor Marlon Brown should be a No. 2 wideout in the NFL. Think Joe Flacco misses Anquan Boldin?

  17. New York Jets: Dee Ford, DE/OLB, Auburn
The Jets have a great interior pass rush, but they need to become more potent on the outside. Dee Ford followed up with his dominant performance in the national championship with a great Senior Bowl. I don’t know if he can sneak into the first round, but he’ll definitely be chosen early on Day 2 at the latest.

  18. Miami Dolphins: Bishop Sankey, RB, Washington
The Dolphins don’t trust Lamar Miller at all, while Daniel Thomas isn’t very good. They’ll likely be searching for a new starting running back this spring.

  19. Chicago Bears: Loucheiz Purifoy, CB, Florida
Chicago was able to re-sign Tim Jennings recently, but Charles Tillman’s contract is expiring soon. The Bears have to deal with Aaron Rodgers and Matthew Stafford twice per year, so they’ll definitely look to upgrade their secondary with multiple selections.

Pick change; previously Lamarcus Joyner, S

  20. Arizona Cardinals: Kyle Van Noy, DE/OLB, BYU
The Cardinals, who typically go with the top player on their board, will almost definitely be interested in someone like Kyle Van Noy, as they really need an upgrade at outside linebacker across from Sam Acho. John Abraham, 36 in May, won’t be effective much longer.

  21. Green Bay Packers: Trent Murphy, DE/OLB, Stanford
The Packers need pass-rushing depth in the event that Clay Matthews gets hurt again. As Charlie Campbell reported, the Packers are very interested in Trent Murphy.

  22. Philadelphia Eagles: Ed Reynolds, S, Stanford
Philadelphia’s defense was terrible for many reasons, one of which is the safety position. Nate Allen is an impending free agent, while Patrick Chung is absolutely terrible. I recently had Ed Reynolds in the fourth round, but I’ve moved him up my board recently, so he’s now in Round 2-3 range.

Pick change; previously Dion Bailey, S

  23. Cincinnati Bengals: Bradley Roby, CB, Ohio State
Mike Zimmer did a great job of getting the most out of Terence Newman and Pacman Jones, but he’s moved on to be the head coach in Minnesota. The Bengals will have to compensate with some new corners.

Bradley Roby is slotted pretty low in this mock because he played poorly this previous season. He’s also had some off-the-field issues. I think the Bengals would take a chance on him though.

  24. San Francisco 49ers: Craig Loston, S, LSU
The 49ers spent a first-round pick on a safety last year, but they may have to use another selection on one with Donte Whitner heading into free agency.

  25. San Diego Chargers: Michael Sam, DE/OLB, Missouri
The Chargers were so desperate for help at rush linebacker that they signed Dwight Freeney last offseason. The former Colt is obviously not a long-term solution for the team’s pass-rushing woes. He wasn’t even a short-term answer.

  26. New Orleans Saints: Stanley Jean-Baptiste, CB, Nebraska
The Saints have some issues at cornerback with Jabari Greer’s status being uncertain. Greer, who tore his ACL in November, is due $4.4 million next season as a 32-year-old.

Pick change; previously Kyle Fuller, CB

  27. Indianapolis Colts: Chris Borland, ILB, Wisconsin
The Colts need help all over their defense, including the linebacking corps, where the injury-prone Pat Angerer will be a free agent this March.

  28. Carolina Panthers: Morgan Moses, OT, Virginia
Jordan Gross is a free agent this season. He has said he’ll only play for Carolina, but he also discussed retirement. Even if he comes back, the Panthers will need to think about bringing in a long-term solution at left tackle, as well as an immediate upgrade over right tackle Byron Bell, who couldn’t block Junior Galette.

  29. San Francisco 49ers: Davante Adams, WR, Fresno State
Anquan Boldin and Mario Manningham will both be free agents next March. The 49ers will need a new receiver to complement Michael Crabtree.

  30. New England Patriots: Weston Richburg, C, Colorado State
Ryan Wendell, an impending free agent, has been most responsible for Tom Brady’s poor pass protection.

  31. Denver Broncos: Kyle Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech
You have to wonder what the Broncos plan on doing at cornerback in 2014 and beyond. Champ Bailey and Quentin Jammer will be 36 and 35, respectively, in June. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, meanwhile, will be a free agent in March.

Pick change; previously Paul Richardson, WR

  32. Seattle Seahawks: Paul Richardson, WR, Colorado
Golden Tate and Doug Baldwin are both impending free agents, but the Seahawks can do better at receiver anyway. I’m sure Cris Carter would agree.

Pick change; previously Stanley Jean-Baptiste, CB
