2013 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2

Last update: Monday, March 11, 2013. Major changes in all 5 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

You can find the complete seven-round 2013 NFL Draft Order by clicking the link.

  1. Jacksonville Jaguars: Johnthan Banks, CB, Mississippi State
As mentioned in the Jacksonville Jaguars 2013 NFL Team Needs, there seems to be something wrong with every Jacksonville cornerback. Derek Cox is an injury-prone free agent. Aaron Ross isn’t any good. Rashean Mathis is old. William Middleton is about to hit the market as well. Sixth-round rookie Mike Harris played decently until Tom Brady exposed him in Week 16. The new front office needs to find a new No. 1 cornerback.

Johnthan Banks had an awful Combine, but he fits perfectly into Gus Bradley’s system as a tall, lanky corner.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

  2. San Francisco 49ers: Jonathan Cyprien, S, Florida International
Despite making the Pro Bowl, Donte Whitner hasn’t been very good this year (he surrendered more touchdowns than any safety). Dashon Goldson, meanwhile, was slapped with a franchise tag this prior offseason. The 49ers, who might want to upgrade the secondary after Joe Flacco torched them in the Super Bowl, will need a replacement if they can’t sign him to a long-term deal.

Jonathan Cyprien made this big leap recently. There’s so much buzz about him recently, and there are multiple reports indicating that several teams have him ranked as the No. 2 safety in this class.

Pick change; previously Margus Hunt, DE

  3. Philadelphia Eagles: E.J. Manuel, QB, Florida State
Chip Kelly said there would be competition at the quarterback position. He probably meant between the signal-caller he just retained, Dennis Dixon and whomever he drafts in Round 2 or 3. As mentioned earlier, I can’t see Nick Foles staying on the roster; he doesn’t fit the offense, and the Eagles can get a third-rounder at the very worst for him.

E.J. Manuel is the best fit for Kelly’s offense out of the signal-callers available at this juncture.

  4. Detroit Lions: DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Clemson
The Lions have brought in Cordarrelle Patterson and Justin Hunter for private interviews lately (check the NFL Draft Prospect Meetings list for more). Both are off the board, but another talented wideout would help across from Calvin Johnson.

Pick change; previously Arthur Brown, LB

  5. Cincinnati Bengals: Giovani Bernard, RB, North Carolina
BenJarvus Green-Ellis rushed for 100-plus yards in four of the five games prior to Pittsburgh, but that’s mostly just great blocking rather than the Law Firm improving. One of the Bengals’ top priorities is finding a capable running back. Giovani Bernard would complement Green-Ellis very well.

  6. Arizona Cardinals: Kyle Long, OT/G, Oregon
This is a pretty obvious selection. The Cardinals have pressing offensive line issues that they’ll absolutely need to resolve this offseason. If they want to keep first-rounder Geno Smith healthy, they’ll need to find multiple upgrades up front.

  7. New York Jets: Ryan Nassib, QB, Syracuse
The Jets need to take a chance on a young quarterback because Mark Sanchez is awful. They have to give their fans some hope, or they may lose more supporters than just Fireman Ed. They’ve shown lots of interest in Ryan Nassib.

Pick change; previously Eddie Lacy, RB

  8. Tennessee Titans: Darius Slay, CB, Mississippi State
The Titans were interested in drafting a highly ranked cornerback at No. 20 back in April, but neither Stephon Gilmore nor Dre Kirkpatrick fell to them. Maybe they’ll have more luck in the 2013 NFL Draft, but if not, they could definitely take a corner in the second round. Alterraun Verner will be entering his contract year in 2013, so Tennessee will need a new starter if it can’t retain him. Besides, the Titans need to fix their 24th-ranked pass defense.

Pick change; previously Larry Warford, G

  9. Buffalo Bills: Matt Barkley, QB, USC
General manager Buddy Nix told the media that he would probably trade up for a quarterback this April. Maybe this is what he meant. I doubt Matt Barkley will last this long, but Buffalo could easily move into the 25-35 range to obtain him.

  10. Miami Dolphins: Terron Armstead, OT, Arkansas-Pine Bluff
With each passing day, it’s becoming more evident that Jake Long will not be back with the Dolphins next year, as the two teams just can’t seem to agree on a price. If Long leaves, Miami will have to find a new right tackle, as Jonathan Martin will move over permanently to the blind side.

  11. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Jamar Taylor, CB, Boise State
The Buccaneers failed to land a cornerback in the first round of this mock draft update, so they’ll need to do so in the second round. Their secondary is an abomination.

Pick change; previously Darius Slay, CB

  12. Carolina Panthers: Blidi Wreh-Wilson, CB, Connecticut
Here’s some much-needed secondary help. Chris Gamble was cut recently, so the Panthers have to find a new top cornerback, especially considering the receivers they have to deal with in the division.

Pick change; previously DeAndre Hopkins, WR

  13. San Diego Chargers: Larry Warford, G, Kentucky
More offensive line help for Philip Rivers. The Chargers’ top three guards are all free agents. At least one replacement will be needed.

Pick change; previously Jamar Taylor, CB

  14. St. Louis Rams: Zach Ertz, TE, Stanford
Lance Kendricks had an issue with drops as a rookie. He resolved that in 2012, but he didn’t exactly establish himself as a potent threat. The Rams could be looking for a new tight end. Remember, this regime has no allegiance to Kendricks.

  15. Dallas Cowboys: Bennie Logan, DT, LSU
The Cowboys need personnel for Monte Kiffin’s 4-3 defense. It appears as though Jay Ratliff will be on the roster next year, which is a huge mistake typical of the post-Bill Parcells Jerry Jones era. Defensive tackle still needs to be addressed though.

  16. Pittsburgh Steelers: Manti Te’o, LB, Notre Dame
Manti Te’o had a miserable Combine. He ran a 4.82 40 and later blamed it on fatigue (as if the other players weren’t tired). He looked stiff in the drills. Worst of all, he drew that ridiculous press conference. Te’o handled himself well in front of the media, but the press conference itself was the major problem. No team wants to deal with the media circus that will come with acquiring Te’o.

The Steelers, as they always do, catch a falling prospect. Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette recently reported that the Steelers could be targeting an inside linebacker early in the 2013 NFL Draft.

  17. New York Giants: Khaseem Greene, LB, Rutgers
The Giants have issues in the middle of their defense. Chase Blackburn shouldn’t be starting, while Keith Rivers, a free agent in March, can never get healthy. General manager Jerry Reese said that there needs to be better linebacker play next year.

Pick change; previously Sylvester Williams, DT

  18. Chicago Bears: Stedman Bailey, WR, West Virginia
The Bears have revealed that they will be searching for a speed element to their passing game this offseason. If that’s the case, they may consider Stedman Bailey at this juncture. Chicago cannot have Devin Hester on the field as a receiver any longer.

Pick change; previously David Bakhtiari, OT/G

  19. Washington Redskins: Matt Elam, S, Florida
Here’s some much-needed help for the Redskins’ secondary, as both safety positions need to be addressed. Brandon Meriweather cannot be relied upon to stay healthy, and it’s not like he was a Pro Bowl talent anyway. Madieu Williams, meanwhile, needs to be upgraded because he’s not any good.

  20. Minnesota Vikings: Kawann Short, DT, Purdue
The Vikings can address one of their biggest needs with the best player available. Defensive tackle is a huge issue right now; Kevin Williams will turn 33 in August, and there’s no one of note playing next to him. Letroy Guion is a decent rotational guy but should not be a starter. Kawann Short is too good to pass up at this juncture.

Pick change; previously John Jenkins, NT

  21. Cincinnati Bengals: Eric Reid, S, LSU
The Bengals had a big need at safety last spring, but they didn’t address the position until the fifth round of the 2012 NFL Draft. They’ll put more effort into finding an upgrade the following offseason because they won’t survive with Reggie Nelson and the benched Taylor Mays (or cornerback Nate Clements, an impending free agent who was playing out of position) as their starters.

Pick change; previously Blidi Wreh-Wilson, CB

  22. Miami Dolphins: Alex Okafor, DE/OLB, Texas
Cameron Wake is the only player on this roster who consistently gets pressure on the quarterback, and that simply can’t be the case if you’re trying to unseat Tom Brady and the Patriots in the AFC East.

  23. Green Bay Packers: Eddie Lacy, RB, Alabama
James Starks has yet to prove that he can stay healthy, while Alex Green has shown nothing in several starts. Cedric Benson is obviously not a long-term answer, though I’ve been impressed with DuJuan Harris in his limited action. Still, the Packers may address the running back position early in the 2013 NFL Draft.

I had Eddie Lacy in the first round of my mock draft a couple of weeks ago, but I’ve dropped him because he can’t work out because of an injury. He won’t fall too far, but he’s unlikely to be chosen on Thursday night unless he can run for teams.

Pick change; previously Terrance Williams, WR

  24. Seattle Seahawks: Margus Hunt, DE/DT, SMU
Margus Hunt makes sense for Seattle. He’s very athletic, so he’s the type of player Pete Carroll loves. He could bolster a pass rush that needs to improve, especially in the wake of Colin Kaepernick developing into a dynamic threat in San Francisco.

Pick change; previously Justin Hunter, WR

  25. Houston Texans: Kevin Minter, ILB, LSU
There’s a ton of uncertainty at inside linebacker for Houston. Brian Cushing is coming off a torn ACL, Bradie James is an impending free agent who isn’t very good, while neither Tim Dobbins nor Darryl Sharpton is worthy of starting.

Pick change; previously Jesse Williams, NT

  26. Denver Broncos: Phillip Thomas, S, Fresno State
Denver’s young corners played well alongside Champ Bailey, but safety help is needed because Michael Adams isn’t very good. He’s going to be a 32-year-old entering his contract season anyway. Oh, and then there’s the whole Rahim Moore thing.

Pick change; previously Quinton Patton, WR

  27. New England Patriots: David Amerson, S/CB, N.C. State
Aqib Talib is a free agent, while second-year Alfonzo Dennard could spend some time in prison after striking a police officer. The Patriots will be looking to improve their secondary, and Bill Belichick seems to love these corner-safety hybrids.

  28. Atlanta Falcons: Dallas Thomas, G/OT, Tennessee
Peter Konz could eventually move to center and replace Todd McClure, but the Falcons will still need an upgrade at right guard. Because of Konz’s versatility, they can afford to take the top interior lineman available.

  29. San Francisco 49ers: Robert Woods, WR, USC
Mario Manningham could be released in the coming months. He’s owed close to $4 million in non-guaranteed money, and he’s coming off a torn ACL and PCL that he suffered in late December. If that happens, San Francisco could look for another wideout despite the Anquan Boldin trade.

  30. Baltimore Ravens: Jesse Williams, NT, Alabama
Terrence Cody is a bust. He was playing behind Ma’ake Kemoeatu in his third season. Kemoeatu is a 34-year-old free agent, so the Ravens may want to bring in a new nose tackle this offseason.

Pick change; previously Phillip Thomas, S
