2013 NFL Mock Draft: Round 3

Last update: Monday, March 11, 2013. Major changes in all 5 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

You can find the complete seven-round 2013 NFL Draft Order by clicking the link.

  1. Kansas City Chiefs: Terrance Williams, WR, Baylor
The Chiefs re-signed Dwayne Bowe, but they still need a No. 2 wideout, as Jonathan Baldwin, who is part of the old regime, has shown nothing thus far.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

Pick change; previously Markus Wheaton, WR

  2. Jacksonville Jaguars: Matt Scott, QB, Arizona
The Jaguars have to spend a pick on a quarterback at some point. New general manager has sounded like a lunatic in his praise for Blaine Gabbert, but he must have a backup plan if/when Gabbert sucks again. Jacksonville has been linked to Matt Scott.

Pick change; previously Khaseem Greene, LB

  3. Detroit Lions: Cornelius Washington, DE, Georgia
The Lions need defensive end help with Kyle Vanden Bosch getting cut and Cliff Avril entering free agency. Cornelius Washington, who blew up the Combine, would be a great fit in Detroit’s wide-9 formation.

  4. Oakland Raiders: Tyler Wilson, QB, Arkansas
There’s some speculation that Carson Palmer won’t agree to a paycut. If so, the Raiders will be looking for a quarterback – quite possibly as high as No. 3 overall with Geno Smith.

Pick change; previously Marc Anthony, CB

  5. Philadelphia Eagles: John Jenkins, NT, Georgia
The Eagles are moving to a 3-4 defense. Every 3-4 needs a nose tackle, but Philadelphia doesn’t have one. That’ll obviously have to change.

Pick change; previously Robert Alford, CB

  6. Cleveland Browns: Tyler Bray, QB, Tennessee
New regimes mean new quarterbacks, so unless Michael Lombardi trades for Ryan Mallett, he could spend an early selection on a developmental signal-caller.

  7. Arizona Cardinals: Sio Moore, OLB, Connecticut
Sio Moore, who provides great value here in Round 3, could bolster an inconsistent pass rush and displace the injury-prone O’Brien Schofield.

  8. Tennessee Titans: Jordan Reed, TE, Florida
Jared Cook wasn’t franchised, which means the Titans have a pretty big hole at the tight end position.

  9. Buffalo Bills: Vance McDonald, TE, Rice
General manager Buddy Nix recently told the media that he plans on upgrading the tight end position. Expect one of his Day 2 selections to be used on this.

  10. New York Jets: Christine Michael, RB, Texas A&M
The Jets need to give their next quarterback some weapons to work with. Both the receiver and tight end positions need to be upgraded. Running back must be addressed as well. Shonn Greene’s a free agent, but he wasn’t very good anyway.

Pick change; previously Ryan Nassib, QB

  11. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Sam Montgomery, DE, LSU
No one should be surprised if Sam Montgomery falls to the third round or later. His comments about quitting and betting on football have drawn some serious red flags. However, he’s the best player available and fills a big need for Tampa Bay.

Michael Bennett is a free agent, while Da’Quan Bowers was arrested for bringing a gun to an airport, so the Buccaneers could be targeting a defensive end early in the 2013 NFL Draft.

  12. San Francisco 49ers: Jamie Collins, DE/OLB, Southern Miss
The 49ers will probably plan to do something about their serious lack of depth at rush linebacker this offseason. Jamie Collins had an awesome Combine and is generating a ton of buzz, so I could eventually move him into the second round.

  13. New Orleans Saints: Robert Alford, CB, Southeastern Louisiana
The Saints obviously have to upgrade their secondary after sporting one of the worst pass defenses of all time in 2012.

Pick change; previously Eric Reid, S

  14. San Diego Chargers: Marc Anthony, CB, California
Both Quentin Jammer and Antoine Cason will be free agents in March. The Chargers will have to find some reinforcements at cornerback if they lose either defender.

Pick change; previously Travis Frederick, G/C

  15. Miami Dolphins: Gavin Escobar, TE, San Diego State
Anthony Fasano is an upcoming free agent, while Michael Egnew appears to be a sunk cost. Ryan Tannehill needs a solid intermediate target.

Pick change; previously Stedman Bailey, WR

  16. St. Louis Rams: David Bakhtiari, OT/G, Colorado
The Rams desperately need to upgrade their offensive front. Jeff Fisher said it as much – he defended Sam Bradford recently by saying the blocking needs to get better up front. Expect St. Louis to make multiple upgrades to the offensive line this offseason.

Pick change; previously D.J. Swearinger, S

  17. Pittsburgh Steelers: Quinton Patton, WR, Louisiana Tech
The Steelers never shy away from a play-maker if one provides good value. That’s the case with Aaron Dobson. The butterfingered Mike Wallace could be gone this offseason.

Pick change; previously Aaron Dobson, WR

  18. Dallas Cowboys: Barrett Jones, G/C/OT, Alabama
The interior of Dallas’ offensive line is an abomination. The front office found two downgrades at guard last offseason. Hopefully it finds better players this time around.

  19. New York Giants: Travis Frederick, G/C, Wisconsin
Kevin Boothe is a free agent. If he’s not retained, someone named Selvish Capers will have to start at left guard. Sounds like some sort of comic book villain.

Pick change; previously Kiko Alonso, ILB

  20. Miami Dolphins: Justin Pugh, G/OT, Syracuse
Justin Pugh has dinosaur arms, so he might be forced into playing guard. That’s fine for the Dolphins because they need help at both right tackle (if Jake Long leaves) and right guard.

  21. Minnesota Vikings: Ryan Swope, WR, Texas A&M
Another receiver upgrade for the Vikings. They’ll need someone to man the slot in the wake of the Percy Harvin trade.

Pick change; previously J.J. Wilcox, S

  22. Cincinnati Bengals: Jelani Jenkins, OLB, Florida
The Bengals have major issues at linebacker. Manny Lawson is a free agent, while Rey Maualuga was one of the worst defensive starters in the NFL last year.

  23. Washington Redskins: Markus Wheaton, WR, Oregon State
The Redskins have to fix their secondary and offensive line, but something else they should do is find some help at receiver. I think they’ll do that if they get good value. That’s definitely the case in this scenario.

Pick change; previously Ryan Swope, WR

  24. Indianapolis Colts: Corey Lemonier, DE/OLB, Auburn
Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis won’t be around much longer. The Colts need to find new players who can rush the passer.

  25. Seattle Seahawks: Everett Dawkins, DT, Florida State
Perhaps Seattle’s greatest priority this offseason is finding an interior pass-rushing presence. Having something like that would make the already-awesome secondary much more potent.

  26. Green Bay Packers: Aaron Dobson, WR, Marshall
Greg Jennings is a free agent. He’s proven to be unreliable in terms of staying healthy, so he won’t be back. The Packers consequently may target a receiver early in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Pick change; previously Knile Davis, RB

  27. Houston Texans: D.J. Swearinger, S, South Carolina
The Texans will have to find safety help if they can’t retain top free agent Glover Quin.

Pick change; previously Cobi Hamilton, WR

  28. Denver Broncos: Knile Davis, RB, Arkansas
John Fox is not shy about using early selections on running backs. He needs one. Willis McGahee is old, Knowshon Moreno can’t be trusted, and Ronnie Hillman’s just a chance-of-pace back.

Pick change; previously Montee Ball, RB

  29. New England Patriots: Marquise Goodwin, WR/KR, Texas
Even if the Patriots happen to re-sign Wes Welker, they’ll need to find some help at receiver.

Pick change; previously Mike Glennon, QB

  30. Atlanta Falcons: Zaviar Gooden, OLB, Missouri
As noted in my Atlanta Falcons Offseason Needs page, the Falcons’ play at linebacker must improve. Stephen Nicholas can’t be on the field on all three downs, while Akeem Dent was a disappointment in his first season as a starter. The team needs to find a linebacker capable of playing all three downs with Sean Weatherspoon.

  31. San Francisco 49ers: Tharold Simon, CB, LSU
Teams are always looking for cornerback depth, especially if they have extra picks. Besides, Carlos Rogers didn’t play as well this past season. He was solid at times, but was inconsistent.

  32. Baltimore Ravens: Da’Rick Rogers, WR, Tennessee Tech
The Ravens take chances on players like Da’Rick Rogers. If Rogers stays out of trouble, he could be a solid weapon for Joe Flacco. He can be a solid replacement for Anquan Boldin, who was dealt to the 49ers. Check out the 2013 NFL Free Agent Grades page for my grades for Baltimore and San Francisco in that deal.
