2013 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2

Last update: Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013. Major changes in all 4 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

You can find the complete seven-round 2013 NFL Draft Order by clicking the link.

  1. Jacksonville Jaguars: Matt Barkley, QB, USC
The Jaguars will spend one of their first two picks on a quarterback. Blaine Gabbert is done starting for Jacksonville. He’s absolutely terrible.

I never imagined that Matt Barkley could fall to Round 2, but it’s definitely a strong possibility now. He really cost himself by going back to school. He could still go in the first round, but he had a poor 2012 campaign, and his mediocre arm won’t help matters. There’s also a developing aversion to USC quarterbacks, as some NFL personnel people believe they have such a high failure rate because they’re more Hollywood stars than football players in their environment.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

  2. Kansas City Chiefs: DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Clemson
Kansas City’s new quarterback will need a new receiver if Dwayne Bowe leaves. I wouldn’t spend the money on Bowe; he’s overrated because he’s inconsistent and piles up most of his stats in garbage time. He was responsible for a ton of turnovers, including both of Matt Cassel’s interceptions against the Ravens.

Pick change; previously Justin Hunter, WR

  3. Philadelphia Eagles: Jesse Williams, NT, Alabama
The Eagles are moving to a 3-4 defense. Every 3-4 needs a nose tackle, but Philadelphia doesn’t have one. That’ll obviously have to change.

Pick change; previously Tony Jefferson, S

  4. Detroit Lions: Barrett Jones, G/C/OT, Alabama
Barrett Jones can play virtually any position on the offensive line, including center. Detroit’s current center, the declining Dominic Raiola, will be due $4.05 million in a 2013 walk year. Help is needed at guard as well, as Stephen Peterman performed poorly.

  5. Cincinnati Bengals: Giovani Bernard, RB, North Carolina
BenJarvus Green-Ellis rushed for 100-plus yards in four of the five games prior to Pittsburgh, but that’s mostly just great blocking rather than the Law Firm improving. One of the Bengals’ top priorities is finding a capable running back. Giovani Bernard would complement Green-Ellis very well.

  6. Arizona Cardinals: E.J. Manuel, QB, Florida State
John Skelton just put on one of the worst quarterbacking performances of all time in Seattle, while Kevin Kolb, who is also iffy, cannot stay healthy. Oh, and let’s not forget Ryan Lindley, who might just be even worse than Skelton. They all made Brian Hoyer look like the second coming of Kurt Warner, as Hoyer was actually capable of getting the ball to Larry Fitzgerald and Michael Floyd.

Arizona needs a franchise quarterback, and Fitzgerald, who generally has a say in whom his team drafts, will pull for one in the first two rounds.

E.J. Manuel was the top signal-caller at the Senior Bowl. He’s a good fit for Bruce Arians’ vertical offense, unlike Tyler Wilson, whom I had slotted here a week ago.

Pick change; previously Tyler Wilson, QB

  7. New York Jets: Tyler Wilson, QB, Arkansas
The Jets need to take a chance on a young quarterback because Mark Sanchez is awful. They have to give their fans some hope, or they may lose more supporters than just Fireman Ed.

Pick change; previously Ryan Nassib, QB

  8. Tennessee Titans: Larry Warford, G, Kentucky
Chris Johnson has finally regained CJ2K form in recent weeks, but that doesn’t mean the Titans can’t use an upgrade or two on the offensive line. Help is needed on the interior. Larry Warford was dominant at the Senior Bowl.

Pick change; previously Dallas Thomas, OT/G

  9. Buffalo Bills: Justin Hunter, WR, Tennessee
The Bills drafted a quarterback in the first round, so they’ll need to find a weapon for him. Steve Johnson is currently the only downfield play-maker on Buffalo’s roster.

Pick change; previously Cobi Hamilton, WR

  10. Miami Dolphins: Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame
The Dolphins spent a third-round pick on a tight end last year, but it’s unlikely that Michael Egnew will be on the roster in September. Ryan Tannehill needs a real intermediate option, and Tyler Eifert’s just too good to pass up at this juncture.

  11. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Zach Ertz, TE, Stanford
Charlie Campbell (@DraftCampbell) has informed me that the Buccaneers will be targeting a tight end early in the 2013 NFL Draft. Dallas Clark is a worn-down free agent, while Luke Stocker has been a disappointment thus far. Josh Freeman needs a consistent intermediate target.

  12. Carolina Panthers: Dallas Thomas, OT/G, Tennessee
Jeff Otah was released before the start of the season, and right tackle Byron Bell struggled as a replacement. Meanwhile, left tackle Jordan Gross will be 33 in July, so the Panthers need some stability and young blood up front.

Pick change; previously Lane Johnson, OT

  13. San Diego Chargers: Alex Okafor, DE/OLB, Texas
The Chargers bolster a pass rush that accumulated 11 sacks against the Jets. Why would they do this, especially when they just spent a first-round pick on rush linebacker Melvin Ingram? Well, Shaun Phillips, who had 2.5 of those sacks, will be a 32-year-old free agent in March, so San Diego will need a complement for Ingram if it can’t retain Phillips.

  14. St. Louis Rams: Phillip Thomas, S, Fresno State
The Rams’ defense was great, but they have a couple of areas they need to address. One such spot is the safety position. Craig Dahl must be upgraded.

Pick change; previously D.J. Fluker, OT

  15. Dallas Cowboys: Eric Reid, S, LSU
I’ve learned that the Cowboys are interested in Eric Reid. He makes sense for them, as the safety position was a major weak point after Barry Church tore his Achilles’ tendon. Church was extended prior to the injury, but he’s owed less than $1 million next year, so that won’t prevent Dallas from picking a safety early.

  16. Pittsburgh Steelers: Eddie Lacy, RB, Alabama
Rashard Mendenhall won’t be back next year and Jonathan Dwyer isn’t viewed as a starter per reports, so the Steelers will need to find a new running back. Eddie Lacy is an easy choice following his dominant performance against Notre Dame.

  17. New York Giants: Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida State
Prince Amukamara looks like the real deal, but the Giants need help across from him. Corey Webster, who was torched often this past year, will likely be cut this spring because he’ll be due $7 million in 2013.

Pick change; previously Sharrif Floyd, DT

  18. Chicago Bears: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia
The Bears have revealed that they will be searching for a speed element to their passing game this offseason. If that’s the case, they won’t hesitate selecting Tavon Austin if he’s available at this juncture. Chicago cannot have Devin Hester on the field as a receiver any longer.

Pick change; previously Kyle Long, OT

  19. Washington Redskins: Terrance Williams, WR, Baylor
The Redskins want secondary help, but Terrance Williams is just too good to pass up at this juncture. Besides, Washington has to obtain upgrades at receiver, so why not grab one of Robert Griffin’s former teammates?

Pick change; previously Xavier Rhodes, CB

  20. Minnesota Vikings: Sylvester Williams, DT, North Carolina
The Vikings can address one of their biggest needs with arguably the best player available. Defensive tackle is a big issue right now; Kevin Williams will turn 33 in August, and there’s no one of note playing next to him. Letroy Guion is a decent rotational guy but should not be a starter. Besides, reuniting the Williams Wall could excite Minnesota fans.

Pick change; previously Jesse Williams, NT

  21. Cincinnati Bengals: Jamar Taylor, CB, Boise State
Nate Clements will be a free agent in March, while Terence Newman won’t be around much longer. The Bengals will need a more permanent solution to go along with Leon Hall and Dre Kirkpatrick.

Pick change; previously Jordan Poyer, CB

  22. Miami Dolphins: Blidi Wreh-Wilson, CB, Connecticut
The Dolphins have an extra Day 2 pick because they dealt Vontae Davis to the Colts, so they should probably use one of them on a replacement.

Pick change; previously Desmond Trufant, CB

  23. Green Bay Packers: Quinton Patton, WR, Louisiana Tech
Greg Jennings will be a free agent in March. He’s proven to be unreliable in terms of staying healthy, so the Packers may choose not to re-sign him. If so, they may target a receiver early in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Pick change; previously Christine Michael, RB

  24. Seattle Seahawks: Markus Wheaton, WR, Oregon State
The Seahawks’ receiving corps really needs to be upgraded. Sidney Rice is constantly laboring through injuries and has struggled to get any sort of separation for most of the season. Golden Tate, meanwhile, is way too inconsistent, though he was better at the end of the season. Russell Wilson kept improving every week, so Pete Carroll needs to bolster his wideout corps.

Pick change; previously Sylvester Williams, DT

  25. Houston Texans: Aaron Dobson, WR, Marshall
The Texans have needed a No. 2 receiver for years, but now that Andre Johnson is into his 30s, it won’t be long before they have to secure a new No. 1 wideout for Matt Schaub.

Pick change; previously Stedman Bailey, WR

  26. Denver Broncos: Arthur Brown, LB, Kansas State
Keith Brooking, 37, saw extensive action at middle linebacker this past season when Joe Mays was lost for the year. Neither is very good, so the Broncos could be looking at an upgrade early in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Pick change; previously Logan Ryan, CB

  27. New England Patriots: David Amerson, CB/S, N.C. State
Despite Steve Gregory’s performance against the pathetic Jets, New England still has issues at safety it’ll need to address this offseason. David Amerson may have to move to safety in the NFL, but I’m sure Bill Belichick will love his versatility.

  28. Atlanta Falcons: Kyle Long, G/OT, Oregon
Peter Konz could eventually move to center and replace Todd McClure, but the Falcons will still need an upgrade at right guard. Because of Konz’s versatility, they can afford to take the top interior lineman available.

Pick change; previously Larry Warford, G

  29. Baltimore Ravens: Brandon Williams, NT, Missouri Southern
Terrence Cody is a bust. He was playing behind Ma’ake Kemoeatu in his third season. Kemoeatu is a 34-year-old free agent, so the Ravens may want to bring in a new nose tackle this offseason.

Pick change; previously Da’Rick Rogers, WR

  30. San Francisco 49ers: Darius Slay, CB, Mississippi State
Teams are always looking for cornerback depth, especially if they have extra picks. Besides, Carlos Rogers isn’t playing as well this season. He’s been solid at times, but has been inconsistent.

Pick change; previously Jamar Taylor, CB
