Last update: Friday, April 8, 2011.

This is an Experts 2011 NFL Mock Draft. There were eight of us, so we took turns mock drafting. Thanks to Ryan West of RunningTheZone.com for setting this up. click here to view my real 2011 NFL Mock Draft or 2012 NFL Mock Draft.

Experts 2011 NFL Mock Draft: Picks 1-16

  1. New England Patriots: Cameron Jordan, DE/DT, California
    (By Walter Cherepinsky, WalterFootball.com)

The Patriots were beaten in the trenches in their playoff loss against the Jets. They have to bolster their offensive and defensive lines.

The best linemen available are arguably Cameron Jordan and J.J. Watt. If it comes down between those two, I have to believe that New England will choose the former; Bill Belichick does not like to deal with Watt’s agent, Tom Condon, since a contract dispute with Ben Watson back in 2004.

    MISSING

  2. San Diego Chargers: J.J. Watt, DE, Wisconsin
    (By Aaron Aloysius, DraftBreakdown.com)

The Chargers’ war room is crestfallen to see Cam Jordan come off the board right before their pick, but they’re able to bring in a quality substitute in JJ Watt.

Watt’s length makes him a perfect fit for playing five-technique. With some time spent in an NFL weight room, he should be able to add bulk to his frame and improve his already good playing strength. Despite only playing two years on the defensive side of the ball, Watt uses his hands extremely well and should only improve as he develops in the big leagues.

As a result, he’ll be a strong addition to a Chargers team that could use some more depth and an infusion of youth along its defensive line.

  3. New York Giants: Anthony Castonzo, OT, Boston College
    (By Michael Schottey, BleacherReport.com)

Chris Snee is the youngest starter on the New York offensive line at 29. Both offensive tackles are over 30 and David Diehl didn’t perform particularly well in 2010, allowing 8 sacks and 26 QB pressures. William Beatty hasn’t been effective in spot duty and Shawn Andrews isn’t the future either. Coach Tom Coughlin has an affinity for Boston College–a school he coached at–and there isn’t any reason to think he shouldn’t go back to that well for a ready-to-play tackle prospect.

  4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Jabaal Sheard, DE/OLB, Pittsburgh
    (By Hunter Ansley, DraftZoo.com)

The Bucs worked the interior of their defensive line in last year’s draft, but they still need a lot of help off the edge. Sheard is one of the most underrated prospects in the draft, plays with a lot of effort and energy and does a nice job of getting underneath offensive linemen’s pads off the snap before surprising them with his strength at the point. Plus, he saved an old woman from a burning building, which makes it easier to overlook his overblown “character concerns.”

  5. Kansas City Chiefs: Akeem Ayers, DE/OLB, UCLA
    (By Ryan West, RunningTheZone.com)

This is another team that needs to decide where it wants to address the team. The Chiefs could take NT Phil Taylor here to help bolster the line but I see Pioli going best available and that is Ayers. He will fit nicely in the 3-4 defense and well help out Tamba Hali.

  6. Indianapolis Colts: Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin
(By Matt Miller, New Era Scouting)

The Colts GM Bill Polian will forever regret passing on Rodger Saffold in the 2010 NFL draft, that is until he sees Carimi protecting Peyton Manning next fall.

Some may like Nate Solder better here but we believe Carimi is the best pure tackle in the 2011 class.

  7. Philadelphia Eagles: Nate Solder, OT, Colorado
    (By Wes Bunting, NationalFootballPost.com)

With Howard Mudd as the Eagles new OL coach, the Birds need to find more linear bodies at the tackle position who can play in space in the run game. Solder is a gifted athlete, can play on either side of the offensive line and gives the Eagles some much needed talent up front.

  8. New Orleans Saints: Justin Houston, DE, Georgia
    (By Evan Silva, RotoWorld.com)

Houston has been criticized for possessing similarities to Vernon Gholston, but it’s hard to rack up the second most sacks in the SEC and lead the Georgia football team in tackles for loss without being a pretty darn good football player.

It’s also hard to find 270-pound humans with 4.5 speed. Houston might be the most naturally explosive pass rusher in the draft.

The Saints’ defense needs more big plays, and Houston is a nightmare off the edge. He shouldn’t struggle to beat out Alex Brown.

  9. Seattle Seahawks: Adrian Clayborn, DE, Iowa
    (By Walter Cherepinsky, WalterFootball.com)

The Seahawks have a plethora of options at No. 25. There’s speculation that they could take a quarterback, which I don’t see. Jimmy Smith is a favorite. But if Adrian Clayborn is available, I believe he’ll be the pick.

Defensive ends are drafted earlier than expected, and this is far enough for Clayborn, who could bolster a Seattle pass rush that had to rely upon Chris Clemons last year. Clayborn has some character concerns, but Pete Carroll has taken chances on trouble players before (i.e. Mike Williams, LenDale White, Anthony McCoy, etc.)

  10. Baltimore Ravens: Derek Sherrod, OT, Mississippi State
    (By Aaron Aloysius, DraftBreakdown.com)

The Ravens appear determined to be rid of offensive tackle Jared Gaither, creating a need at the position. In Derek Sherrod, the team gets a smart man’s tackle who could start immediately on the right side. If Michael Oher continues to have trouble manning the blindside, Sherrod could swap spots with him, thereby ensuring that Joe Flacco’s kept clean.

The team may be tempted to take Jimmy Smith here, but Sherrod’s personal and football character make him a better fit for the squad. And if all goes well, the Mississippi State product could end up being the best offensive tackle to come out of this class.

  11. Atlanta Falcons: Cameron Heyward, DE/DT, Ohio State
    (By Michael Schottey, BleacherReport.com)

Atlanta has a certain type of player it looks for and Cam Heyward fits the bill in every way, shape and form. The former Buckeye is a hard worker, doesn’t wear down in games, and was a four year player at a major conference school who was voted team captain. All of this makes Heyward a possible Falcon. What makes it a lock? The Falcons need for a pass rusher and Heyward’s ability to consistently threaten the edge (although, not an elite edge rusher) while also being a legitimate run defender.

  12. New England Patriots: Mike Pouncey, G, Florida
    (By Hunter Ansley, DraftZoo.com)

Stephen Neal announced his retirement, so the Patriots will be looking for a guard early in the 2011 NFL Draft. The Patriots have to protect Tom Brady; he got killed in the playoff loss to the Jets.

Mike Pouncey could go as high as No. 15 to the Dolphins, so he’s a steal at No. 28.

  13. Chicago Bears: Benjamin Ijalana, OT/G, Villanova
    (By Ryan West, RunningTheZone.com)

It’s no surprise that the Bears need offensive line help. Jay Cutler was seemingly running for his life all season and the offense had it’s moments where it couldn’t it move the ball, especially against the Packers in the NFC championship game.

Ijalana would be a nice fit because he could play guard or tackle for the Bears and help the offense limit those moments. He can give the line some versatility and the Bears would be able to compete again for the NFC North crown. Anything other than addressing the offensive line will seemingly not help the Bears right away.

  14. New York Jets: On the clock
(By Matt Miller, New Era Scouting)

  15. Pittsburgh Steelers: Will be posted tomorrow
    (By Wes Bunting, NationalFootballPost.com)

  16. Green Bay Packers: Will be posted tomorrow
    (By Evan Silva, RotoWorld.com)
