Live 2018 NFL Draft Grades: Round 5

These Live 2018 NFL Draft Grades will be posted minutes after each pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Follow @walterfootball for updates.

2018 NFL Draft Grades - Round: Picks 1-16 | Picks 17-32 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | NFL Draft Team Grades | Supplemental

  1. Green Bay Packers: Cole Madison, G/OT, Washington State A- Grade
Cole Madison was introduced as a tackle, but I think he may have to play guard. That makes more sense, as Green Bay had to bolster its interior protection. I like this pick a lot, as I could see a scenario in which Madison starts as a rookie.

  2. New York Giants: R.J. McIntosh, DE/DT, Miami A Grade
General manager Dave Gettleman strikes gold again. R.J. McIntosh was a very disruptive interior presence for Miami last season, and he could’ve been taken a round or two earlier. He’s a nice fit as a five-technique in the Giants’ new 3-4 scheme.

  3. Oakland Raiders: Maurice Hurst, DT, Michigan A+ Grade
Wow! What a great pick. This might just be the best selection in all of Day 3. The Raiders are getting a first-round prospect, an interior disruptor who will put lots of heat on opposing quarterbacks. Hurst fell because of a scary heart condition, but the fifth round is a great time to take a chance like this. What else could the Raiders do, take a special-teams scrub?

  4. Seattle Seahawks: Shaquem Griffin, LB, Central Florida A- Grade
People were wondering if Shaquem Griffin fell, but I had him at this very exact spot in my 2018 NFL Mock Draft. The Seahawks liked him all the way as a sub-package linebacker who will make an instant impact on special teams. Seattle had major problems when Bobby Wagner and K.J. Wright got hurt, so they desperately needed strong depth like this.

  5. San Francisco 49ers: D.J. Reed, CB, Kansas State B+ Grade
I thought D.J. Reed would go in this range, so this pick makes sense, especially when considering that the 49ers needed depth at cornerback. Reed will bring some extra value as a return specialist.

  6. New England: Ja’whuan Bentley, LB, Purdue MILLEN WOULD LOVE TO INSERT KIELBASAS INTO CHEWBACCA’S BACKSIDE Grade
And we’ve reached the point in the draft in which Bill Belichick mails it in and starts taking UDFA players. The Patriots notoriously have a small board, and Bentley certainly is a UDFA prospect.

  7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Justin Watson, WR, Penn B Grade
Justin Watson was considered a fifth-round prospect, so he makes sense at this juncture. Watson is a highly athletic receiver, but will need to prove that he can be productive out of the Ivy League. The Buccaneers will need to replace DeSean Jackson soon, so maybe Watson can start in 2019 and beyond.

  8. Chicago Bears: Bilal Nichols, DE/DT, Delaware B Grade
Bilal Nichols was seen as an early third-day prospect, so it’s a logical move for the Bears to take him at this spot. Nichols is a small-school player who will need to prove himself, but he could provide solid depth on the defensive line for a team that needed it.

  9. Seattle Seahawks: Tre Flowers, S, Oklahoma State C- Grade
This pick isn’t as exciting as Seattle’s other fifth-rounder, and it’s not as good either. Tre Flowers is a stiff-hipped safety who doesn’t seem like he’ll pan out in the NFL. Maybe he can be good on special teams.

  10. Los Angeles Rams: Micah Kiser, LB, Virginia B+ Grade
I had Micah Kiser slotted to the Rams in this same exact spot (except, 11 picks earlier, since they didn’t have this selection originally.) I thought it made a lot of sense because the Rams needed help at linebacker in the wake of the Alec Ogletree departure, and Kiser is a late-fourth, early-fifth prospect.

  11. Pittsburgh Steelers: Marcus Allen, S/LB, Penn State A- Grade
The Steelers just obtained the best Penn State safety, though Troy Apke was taken earlier. Marcus Allen is similar to Terrell Edmunds in that he’s a safety who may have to move to linebacker in the pros. Either way, Pittsburgh needed help at both positions, so I like this pick.

  12. Seattle Seahawks: Michael Dickson, P, Texas C Grade
The Seahawks moved up … for a punter!? OK, so this isn’t nearly as dumb as taking a punter in the third round, over Russell Wilson, no less, but I’m not a fan of trading resources for a punter. Still, Michael Dickson projects as a great punter, so I don’t hate this.

  13. Cleveland Browns: Genard Avery, LB, Memphis B Grade
Mike Mayock mentioned that Genard Avery has a knee problem of some sort. This was news to me, but the Browns apparently aren’t too concerned. Avery was seen as a fourth-round prospect who would have to be limited to two downs because of his struggles in pass protection. He should be a force versus the run, however.

  14. Cincinnati Bengals: Davontae Harris, CB, Illinois State B Grade
Davontae Harris struggles with deep speed, but he’s a solid zone cornerback, and he definitely fits the range as a fifth-round prospect. He’ll provide some much-needed depth at cornerback.

  15. Tennessee Titans: Dane Cruikshank, S/CB, Arizona B+ Grade
Dane Cruikshank is a very athletic safety who might be able to play cornerback. His natural position might be safety, however, and the Titans needed to find someone to challenge the disappointing John Cyprien. Cruikshank could’ve gone a bit earlier than this.

  16. Detroit Lions: Tyrell Crosby, OT, Oregon A Grade
The Lions had major problems whenever one of their tackles went down with an injury, so they had to find a solid reserve. Tyrell Crosby could end up being more than solid. He was a second-day prospect who would’ve gone much earlier if it weren’t for some concussion concerns. Those might re-surface, but the fifth round is a nice time to take a chance.

  17. Buffalo Bills: Siran Neal, S/CB, Jacksonville State C Grade
Siran Neal is someone believed to be a sixth-round prospect at best. He’s versatile in that he can play both cornerback and safety, but his instincts and tackling ability are below average. The Bills could’ve done better.

  18. Los Angeles Chargers: Scott Quessenberry, C/G, UCLA A Grade
Scott Quessenberry is someone who could’ve been taken a round earlier than this. He’s a versatile blocker who can start at center or guard eventually, but I imagine the Chargers will want to use him at center once Mike Pouncey gets hurt. I can’t criticize the Chargers for adding to Philip Rivers’ blocking.

  19. Denver Broncos: Troy Fumagalli, TE, Wisconsin B Grade
The Broncos didn’t get much production from their tight ends last year, but they have Jake Butt coming back from injury. Here’s a tight end they can pair with Butt. Troy Fumagalli seemed like a fifth-round choice to me, so this pick makes sense.

  20. Minnesota Vikings: Tyler Conklin, TE, Central Michigan B Grade
Tyler Conklin has been a consistent receiving threat at Central Michigan. He’ll pair with Kyle Rudolph over the next two years. Rudolph will be an impending free agent in a couple of seasons, so perhaps Conklin will develop into a starter by then.

  21. Cincinnati Bengals: Andrew Brown, DE/DT, Virginia A- Grade
Andrew Brown was very inconsistent at Virginia, but showed his great potential at the Senior Bowl and combine. Brown could’ve been chosen a round or maybe even two earlier than this, so I like this pick for the Bengals, who are bolstering defensive line depth well.

  22. Indianapolis Colts: Daurice Fountain, WR, Northern Iowa A Grade
I like this pick a lot. Daurice Fountain is a quick receiver with solid route-running ability. He was the fastest receiver at the Shrine Game, raising his stock. I thought he could’ve easily gone early in Round 4. I don’t think it’s crazy to think he could start at some point as a rookie.

  23. Los Angeles Rams: Ogbo Okoronkwo, DE, Oklahoma A Grade
I should note very quickly that the Rams just traded Tavon Austin to the Cowboys. I’ll have a grade on that after the draft. As for this pick, I love this a lot more than the Rams’ earlier selections. I think Ogbo Okoronkwo could have gone in the third round, or definitely the fourth frame. He fills a huge need on the edge with Robert Quinn gone.

  24. Carolina Panthers: Jermaine Carter, LB, Maryland C Grade
Jermaine Carter tested very well in the lead up to the draft, running a 4.69. Still, he’s a raw player who probably should’ve been taken in the sixth round at the earliest. He can provide depth when Thomas Davis is serving his suspension.

  25. Baltimore Ravens: Jordan Lasley, WR, California C Grade
Jordan Lasley is coming off a great year, but he has some major holes in his game. His route-running isn’t very good, and he drops too many passes. He also has character issues. This doesn’t seem like a very good pick.

  26. Washington Redskins: Tim Settle, NT, Virginia Tech A Grade
The Redskins already selected a nose tackle, but they might as well add another one, given how much they’ve struggled against the run. Settle is a force versus the rush, but he can also apply some pressure on the quarterback.

  27. New Orleans Saints: Natrell Jamerson, S, Wisconsin B Grade
Natrell Jamerson is going to play special teams for a while, but he’s a smart, instinctive player who could eventually develop into a starter. This is a logical pick, as Jamerson was drawing fifth-round grades.

  28. Pittsburgh Steelers: Jaylen Samuels, TE/RB, N.C. State A Grade
I thought Jaylen Samuels could go in the third round, but it seems like he fell to the fifth frame because he doesn’t have a natural position. However, Samuels is an athletic player who is a Swiss Army Knife type who can contribute in multiple facets. I love this pick for Pittsburgh.

  29. Buffalo Bills: Wyatt Teller, G, Virginia Tech A Grade
Any offensive line pick is a good one right now for the Bills, whose blocking could really struggle next year. The Bills have such holes up front that Wyatt Teller could start as a rookie. This is great value for Teller, who could’ve gone a round-and-a-half earlier.

  30. Minnesota Vikings: Daniel Carlson, K, Auburn C Grade
We’ve had some recent Super Bowl winners cut kickers and bring new ones in, so that should tell you how valuable that position is. Daniel Carlson deserved to be the top kicker taken, but I can’t give this anything higher than a “C” in the fifth round.

  31. Seattle Seahawks: Jamarco Jones, OT, Ohio State C Grade
Jamarco Jones is an awkward projection, as he’s not athletic enough to play tackle and he’s not strong enough to play guard. That said, I can’t strongly criticize the Seahawks trying to improve their blocking.

  32. Indianapolis Colts: Jordan Wilkins, RB, Ole Miss B Grade
Jordan Wilkins is a solid fifth-round prospect who was productive at Ole Miss. He also has nice receiving ability. Wilkins could be Indianapolis’ starting running back next year, albeit by default, given the lack of talent at the position.

  33. Cincinnati Bengals: Darius Phillips, CB, Western Michigan B Grade
It shouldn’t surprise anyone that the Bengals have doubled up on cornerbacks, given their dire need at the position. Darius Phillips makes sense as a fifth-round prospect, and he should be able to play in the slot and double up as a solid special-teamer.

  34. Dallas Cowboys: Mike White, QB, Western Kentucky B- Grade
I don’t like this pick from a needs perspective. The Cowboys already had a solid backup in Cooper Rush. However, I don’t hate this selection either, as Mike White was the top quarterback on the board.

  35. Green Bay Packers: JK Scott, P, Alabama C- Grade
Once again, punters grow on trees, and solid ones at the position can be obtained as undrafted free agents. They make sense in the sixth or seventh rounds, but a fifth-round pick should be used on a real football player.

  36. Oakland Raiders: Johnny Townsend, P, Florida MILLEN PUNTS BALL INTO THE BACKSIDE Grade
The only thing worse than taking a punter in the fifth round is reaching for a punter in the fifth round. The Raiders wanted JK Scott, so they panicked and selected a worse punter, all because they didn’t like their punter’s antics. Dumb.

  37. Green Bay Packers: Marquez Valdes-Scantling, WR, South Florida B Grade
Marquez Valdes-Scantling is a very raw player, but has some good upside. He’s a player Al Davis would’ve liked as a height-weight-speed guy. He could be a good player one day, or he could be a flop. Sounds like a fifth-round pick to me.
