Live 2018 NFL Draft Grades: Round 7

These Live 2018 NFL Draft Grades will be posted minutes after each pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Follow @walterfootball for updates.

2018 NFL Draft Grades - Round: Picks 1-16 | Picks 17-32 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | NFL Draft Team Grades | Supplemental

  1. New England Patriots: Danny Etling, QB, LSU B Grade
Bill Belichick has a good eye for quarterbacks, so it wouldn’t be a big surprise if Danny Etling pans out. Etling was inconsistent at LSU, but finished the year well. His size and accuracy isn’t great, but he could develop into a fine backup.

  2. Seattle Seahawks: Alex McGough, QB, Florida International B+ Grade
This seventh-round quarterback pick isn’t nearly as surprising as New England’s choice of Danny Etling. Alex McGough generated lots of late interest. He’s an accurate quarterback with mobility, and he could develop into a solid NFL backup.

  3. Indianapolis Colts: Matthew Adams, LB, Houston C Grade
Matthew Adams wasn’t really seen as a draftable prospect, but it’s the seventh round, so teams may not have players on their board anymore. I’m not going worse than a “C” in Round 7, so that’s what I’m giving the Colts.

  4. Houston Texans: Jermaine Kelly, CB, San Jose State C Grade
Jermaine Kelly transferred from Washington to San Jose State because he was benched. If he couldn’t start for the Huskies, how will he make it in the pros? I did not see Kelly as a draftable prospect, or even a priority UDFA.

  5. San Francisco 49ers: Jullian Taylor, DT, Temple B+ Grade
Jullian Taylor created some buzz for himself after a strong pro day. This prompted many visits, including speculation that he would go in the late rounds. This pick makes sense for the 49ers, as they had to find some defensive line depth. Taylor has plenty of upside.

  6. Chicago Bears: Javon Wims, WR, Georgia B+ Grade
Javon Wims lacks athleticism, but he could become a solid possession receiver in the NFL if he sticks around. Wims is a logical choice as a Round 6-7 prospect, and the Bears’ need at wideout could allow him to hang on to a job.

  7. Minnesota Vikings: Devante Downs, LB, California B+ Grade
Devante Downs was probably going to be a mid-round prospect before suffering an injury to close out the season. It remains to be seen if he’ll be ready for 2018, but the Vikings could be getting a solid value here if he is.

  8. Denver Broncos: David Williams, RB, Arkansas C Grade
David Williams is a plodder who will run for two yards and fall down if he gets NFL carries. I didn’t think he would be drafted. He offers no athleticism or upside.

  9. Miami Dolphins: Quentin Poling, LB, Ohio B Grade
Quentin Poling was slotted nine selections earlier in my mock draft, so I like the range for him. Poling should be a quality special-teamer and reserve linebacker in the pros. Given Miami’s linebacking woes, he could see more action than he would elsewhere.

  10. Oakland Raiders: Marcell Ateman, WR, Oklahoma State A Grade
I had Marcell Ateman slotted to the Raiders’ Bay Area rival 49ers in the fifth round, so I like the value here in the seventh frame. Ateman can’t separate very well, but he’s largely framed and has nice ball skills. He could easily stick in the pros.

  11. Miami Dolphins: Jason Sanders, K, New Mexico C Grade
It’s the seventh round. Time to take a kicker. Meh.

  12. Jacksonville Jaguars: Leon Jacobs, LB, Wisconsin B Grade
Leon Jacobs, if he does anything beyond special teams, will have to be limited to just two downs. He was strong versus the run in Wisconsin, but his coverage skills are questionable. This is a decent pick in the seventh round.

  13. Los Angeles Rams: Travin Howard, LB, TCU C Grade
Travin Howard was productive at TCU prior to the second half of 2017, but had some injury problems this past season. I can’t imagine Howard being anything much beyond a special-teamer. He’s a safety/linebacker tweener otherwise.

  14. Green Bay Packers: James Looney, DE/DT, California B+ Grade
James Looney was considered a potential mid-round prospect heading into 2017, but he struggled this past season. On top of that, he’s a tweener. The good news is that Looney is athletic, so he has potential. Why not swing for the fences in the seventh round?

  15. Philadelphia Eagles: Jordan Mailata, OT, Australia A- Grade
Speaking of swinging for the fences, that’s exactly what the Eagles are doing with this pick. Jordan Mailata is a former rugby player; he’s a 345-pound guy who moves around pretty well. He impressed at a pro day in Florida, so the Eagles opted to draft him. Mailata obviously needs to learn football, so perhaps he’ll be ready to compete for a starting job once Jason Peters retires.

  16. Carolina Panthers: Andre Smith, LB, North Carolina C+ Grade
Andre Smith made a poor decision by declaring early after an injury-ridden 2017 campaign. Smith has athleticism limitations and will only be a two-down run-stuffing linebacker in the very best case scenario. Smith is fortunate to be drafted.

  17. Indianapolis Colts: Zaire Franklin, LB, Syracuse B+ Grade
This is a nice upside pick in the middle of the seventh round. Zaire Franklin is incredibly athletic, but looks like he hasn’t been coached a day in his life. Perhaps the Colts will be able to mold him into a contributor. It wouldn’t surprise me if he ended up starting one day. It also wouldn’t surprise me if he completely disappeared in six months.

  18. Dallas Cowboys: Bo Scarbrough, RB, Alabama A Grade
I cannot remember another instance in which Jerry Jones, a proud Arkansas alumnus, selected a player from the hated Alabama program. I guess he had to make an exception, and it was a good one. Bo Scarbrough was beaten out by a couple of running backs named Harris this past season, but he’s a physically gifted back who should’ve gone in the fourth round. This is a great pick.

  19. Detroit Lions: Nick Bawden, FB, San Diego State A Grade
A smart player and a stellar blocker, Nick Bawden will help inject some life into Detroit’s dead running game. Kerryon Johnson has to be thrilled about this pick, and I happen to think that it deserves an “A” grade.

  20. Baltimore Ravens: Zach Sieler, DE/DT, Ferris State B Grade
Zach Sieler was a late riser after thriving at his pro day. He’s very smart, and he’s a hard worker; he was a 215-pound walk-on several years ago, and he has since bulked up to 6-6, 290, giving him an ideal frame for a five-technique in the NFL.

  21. Green Bay Packers: Hunter Bradley, LS, Mississippi State C+ Grade
Long-snappers can be found on the street, but I’m fine with a team selecting one in the seventh round.

  22. San Francisco 49ers: Richie James, WR, Middle Tennessee State B+ Grade
Richie James was an explosive player for Middle Tennessee State when he was healthy, but endured one too many injuries. James had the talent to go earlier than this, but perhaps teams were concerned with his medical. Either way, the 49ers are getting a nice bargain here in the middle of the seventh round.

  23. Washington Redskins: Greg Stroman, CB, Virginia Tech B Grade
Greg Stroman was highly productive at Virginia Tech, but fell to the seventh round because teams don’t like cornerbacks who are both small and slow. Stroman was one of the worst testers in pre-draft workouts, but I could see him proving evaluators wrong.

  24. Carolina Panthers: Kendrick Norton, DT, Miami B+ Grade
Kendrick Norton had a few nice moments at Miami, but was a disappointment for the most part. He should have played better than he did, so perhaps Ron Rivera will be able to get the most out of him. I had Norton in the sixth round, so there’s some amount of value with this choice.

  25. New England Patriots: Keion Crossen, CB, Western Carolina C Grade
As mentioned earlier, Bill Belichick is not afraid to draft UDFA players because of his small board. Keion Crossen couldn’t have been on too many draft boards. This late in the draft, this is not a big deal.

  26. Los Angeles Rams: Justin Lawler, DE, SMU B- Grade
Justin Lawler has nice size for an edge rusher (6-4, 264) but his testing numbers were atrocious at his pro day, as he ran slower than five seconds in the 40. Lawler was productive at SMU, but he’s just too limited athletically.

  27. New Orleans Saints: Will Clapp, C/G, LSU A Grade
I had Will Clapp in the fifth round. He’s a smart, versatile interior lineman who can play both guard and center. He needs to work on pass protection, but could be a stout run blocker. I could see him starting one day.

  28. Pittsburgh Steelers: Joshua Frazier, NT, Alabama B Grade
Joshua Frazier might be able to stick as a backup nose tackle. He was a backup for Alabama because of the talent there, but it wouldn’t be the biggest surprise if he were able to make the 53-man roster.

  29. Jacksonville Jaguars: Logan Cooke, P, Mississippi State C Grade
Logan Cooke isn’t even a good punter prospect. I’d go lower than a “C” on this if I promised I wouldn’t go lower than a “C” in the seventh round.

  30. Green Bay Packers: Kendall Donnerson, DE/OLB, Southeast Missouri State B+ Grade
Kendall Donnerson made a name for himself with a stellar pro day workout. He ran a 4.44 and leapt 40 inches despite weighing close to 250 pounds. Donnerson was going to draw tons of interest on the UDFA market, so credit the Packers for taking the initiative by going after Donnerson prior to the conclusion of the draft.

  31. Cincinnati Bengals: Logan Woodside, QB, Toledo B Grade
Marvin Lewis said the Bengals would have to “start from scratch” this offseason. Is this what he meant? Logan Woodside makes sense this late in the draft – I had him going 198th overall – and the Bengals might be able to develop him into a solid No. 2 quarterback, which they need in the wake of the A.J. McCarron departure.

  32. New England Patriots: Ryan Izzo, TE, Florida State B- Grade
Some insurance for Rob Gronkowski? Probably not. Ryan Izzo may not make the roster, but if he does, he’ll contribute on special teams pretty well, much like another player named Izzo who used to play for the Patriots.

  33. Los Angeles Chargers: Justin Jackson, RB, Northwesten A- Grade
Justin Jackson was extremely productive at Northwestern, and when he tested very well at the combine, I thought he could go in the fifth or sixth round. Jackson provides strong value here toward the end of the draft. I like this move a lot, as Jackson could end up being a solid backup behind Melvin Gordon.

  34. Cincinnati Bengals: Rod Taylor, G/OT, Ole Miss A- Grade
It’s not a surprise that the Bengals added another offensive lineman. Rod Taylor should be able to make the 53-man roster as a backup, thanks to his versatility. He played four positions (everything except center) at Ole Miss, and he has nice length and strength to stick in the pros. It wouldn’t surprise me if Taylor emerged as a starter one day, but he’ll likely be a reserve.

  35. Cincinnati Bengals: Auden Tate, WR, Florida State C+ Grade
Auden Tate made a huge mistake by declaring early. There were concerns leading up to the draft that he wouldn’t be able to get any sort of separation in the pros, and that’s exactly why he fell to the seventh round. I’d be pretty surprised if he remained in the NFL for more than a year or two.

  36. Arizona Cardinals: Korey Cunningham, OT, Cincinnati B Grade
Korey Cunningham possesses plenty of upside. He’s very athletic, and he was also productive at Cincinnati. The problem is that he lacks the length to be a tackle and the strength to be a guard. If he can develop some strength, he might be able to stick around as a backup lineman.

  37. Buffalo Bills: Austin Proehl, WR, North Carolina B+ Grade
Austin Proehl, a blue-collar receiver, and son of former NFL wideout Ricky Proehl, can give the Bills some special-teams returning ability. He might also be able to develop into a slot receiver. I wouldn’t count out Proehl making an NFL roster and contributing for a team somehow.

  38. Washington Redskins: Trey Quinn, WR, SMU A- Grade
Trey Quinn might be one of the better Mr. Irrelevants we’ve seen in a while. He was an extremely productive receiver for SMU this past season. He’s quick and sure-handed, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he emerged as a quality slot receiver in the NFL. Well done by Bruce Allen at the very end of the 2018 NFL Draft!
