Drew Mestemaker Prospect Preview
By Charlie Campbell
Career Recap:
Mestemaker flashed special ability with North Texas in 2025, completing 69 percent of his passes for 4,379 yards with 34 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He also had five rushing scores.
2026 Season Outlook:
Mestemaker will see a lot of easy opponents in 2026, but he does have some tough tests, including games against Oregon (Sep. 12) and Texas Tech (Nov. 14).
Prospect Summary:
There is no doubt that Mestemaker has the physical talent to be a starting quarterback in the NFL. Mestemaker has good size with athleticism and a powerful arm. The skill set is there for Mestemaker to start, but he also has untapped potential and upside to develop.
What jumps out immediately about Mestemaker is his arm talent. He has a powerful arm capable of throwing fastballs into tight windows. With easy arm strength, Mestemaker can push the ball downfield as he has no problems firing missiles through the secondary. Mestemaker stretches the field vertically with his ability to throw deep down the field, and he doesn’t need receivers to be open for long, as he can rip the ball to his wideouts in a blur. Mestemaker has the ability to be a pocket passer with a power arm for the NFL.
On top of his arm strength, Mestemaker is a good athlete and is capable of picking up yards on the ground. He throws well on the run and is capable of dodging the rush when his protection breaks down.
Considering he has only started one year at North Texas, it is not a surprise that Mestemaker is raw and could use development. His footwork needs improvement for the NFL, as he is inconsistent with his feet. Improving his footwork will make him more accurate for the pros as well. Mestemaker also could stand to improve his mechanics, and sometimes he drops his arm low. Mestemaker will have to improve his field vision for the NFL and work on making progressions through receivers. At North Texas, he played in a simple college offense that had a lot of screen, swing passes, pop passes, and quick throws to the primary receiver. Mestemaker is going to need to be taught to read coverage, work through his progressions, and get comfortable operating a professional offense. It also would not hurt for Mestemaker to add some weight and fill out his frame some more.
2027 NFL Draft Expectations:
Entering the 2026 season, Mestemaker has the potential to be an early-round prospect in either the 2027 or 2028 NFL Draft.
