2013 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2

Last update: Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013. Major changes in all 4 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

You can find the complete seven-round 2013 NFL Draft Order by clicking the link.

  1. Jacksonville Jaguars: Matt Barkley, QB, USC
The Jaguars will spend one of their first two picks on a quarterback. Blaine Gabbert is done starting for Jacksonville. He’s absolutely terrible. I never imagined that Matt Barkley could fall to Round 2, but it’s definitely a strong possibility now. He really cost himself by going back to school.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

  2. Kansas City Chiefs: Justin Hunter, WR, Tennessee
Kansas City’s new quarterback will need a new receiver if Dwayne Bowe leaves. I wouldn’t spend the money on Bowe; he’s overrated because he’s inconsistent and piles up most of his stats in garbage time. He was responsible for a ton of turnovers, including both of Matt Cassel’s interceptions against the Ravens.

  3. Philadelphia Eagles: Tony Jefferson, S, Oklahoma
Nate Allen and Kurt Coleman both finished in the top 12 for missed tackles among safeties even though they each were out of the lineup for a couple of games. They also blew tons of coverages each week. The Eagles must find at least one upgrade at the position.

  4. Detroit Lions: Barrett Jones, G/C/OT, Alabama
Barrett Jones can play virtually any position on the offensive line, including center. Detroit’s current center, the declining Dominic Raiola, will be due $4.05 million in a 2013 walk year. Help is needed at guard as well, as Stephen Peteramn performed poorly.

  5. Cincinnati Bengals: Giovani Bernard, RB, North Carolina
BenJarvus Green-Ellis rushed for 100-plus yards in four of the five games prior to Pittsburgh, but that’s mostly just great blocking rather than the Law Firm improving. One of the Bengals’ top priorities is finding a capable running back. Giovani Bernard would complement Green-Ellis very well.

  6. Arizona Cardinals: Tyler Wilson, QB, Arkansas
John Skelton just put on one of the worst quarterbacking performances of all time in Seattle, while Kevin Kolb, who is also iffy, cannot stay healthy. Oh, and let’s not forget Ryan Lindley, who might just be even worse than Skelton. They all made Brian Hoyer look like the second coming of Kurt Warner, as Hoyer was actually capable of getting the ball to Larry Fitzgerald and Michael Floyd.

Arizona needs a franchise quarterback, and Fitzgerald, who generally has a say in whom his team drafts, will pull for one in the first two rounds.

  7. New York Jets: Ryan Nassib, QB, Syracuse
The Jets need to take a chance on a young quarterback because Mark Sanchez is awful. They have to give their fans some hope, or they may lose more supporters than just Fireman Ed.

  8. Tennessee Titans: Margus Hunt, DE/DT, SMU
The Titans have zero depth behind Derrick Morgan and Kamerion Wimbley, and in a division that features Matt Schaub and Andrew Luck, they need all the pass-rushing help they can get.

  9. Buffalo Bills: DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Clemson
The Bills drafted a quarterback in the first round, so they’ll need to find a weapon for him. Steve Johnson is currently the only downfield play-maker on Buffalo’s roster.

  10. Miami Dolphins: Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida
Stud defensive tackle Randy Starks will be a free agent in March. If the Dolphins can’t retain him, they’ll have to find a replacement this offseason. They’d have the option of moving Jared Odrick inside, but they may not want to do that if they can get someone as talented as Sharrif Floyd in Round 2.

  11. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Zach Ertz, TE, Stanford
Charlie Campbell (@DraftCampbell) has informed me that the Buccaneers will be targeting a tight end early in the 2013 NFL Draft. Dallas Clark is a worn-down free agent, while Luke Stocker has been a disappointment thus far. Josh Freeman needs a consistent intermediate target.

  12. Carolina Panthers: Lane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma
Jeff Otah was released before the start of the season, and right tackle Byron Bell struggled as a replacement. Meanwhile, left tackle Jordan Gross will be 33 in July, so the Panthers need some stability and young blood up front.

Pick change; previously Dallas Thomas, OT/G

  13. San Diego Chargers: Dallas Thomas, OT/G, Tennessee
The Chargers almost have to make this pick. Philip Rivers appears to be regressing, but it’s impossible to tell if that’s the case because he’s getting slaughtered behind a pathetic offensive line. San Diego cannot, under any circumstances, enter the 2013 season with Jared Gaither as its starting left tackle. He’s just way too injury-prone and unreliable.

Pick change; previously Lane Johnson, OT

  14. St. Louis Rams: D.J. Fluker, OT, Alabama
Another upgrade for the Rams’ poor offensive line. They need to protect Sam Bradford. D.J. Fluker is the top prospect available who makes sense.

  15. Dallas Cowboys: Eric Reid, S, LSU
I’ve learned that the Cowboys are interested in Eric Reid. He makes sense for them, as the safety position was a major weak point after Barry Church tore his Achilles’ tendon. Church was extended prior to the injury, but he’s owed less than $1 million next year, so that won’t prevent Dallas from picking a safety early.

  16. Pittsburgh Steelers: Jawan Jamison, RB, Rutgers
Rashard Mendenhall won’t be back next year, so the Steelers will need to find a running back to complement Jonathan Dwyer. Jawan Jamison, who declared for the 2013 NFL Draft recently, will bring an element that Pittsburgh’s offense has lacked since the days of Willie Parker.

  17. New York Giants: Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida State
Prince Amukamara looks like the real deal, but the Giants need help across from him. Corey Webster, who was torched often this past year, could be cut this spring because he’ll be due $7 million in 2013.

Pick change; previously Khaseem Greene, LB

  18. Chicago Bears: Kyle Long, OT, Oregon
If you’ve watched Jay Cutler take a beating throughout this past season, you know that they need to find multiple upgrades for their struggling offensive line.

Pick change; previously Oday Aboushi, OT

  19. Washington Redskins: Jordan Poyer, CB, Oregon State
DeAngelo Hall, who has been inconsistent this year, is due $7.5 million in 2013, but none of it is guaranteed. Josh Wilson, meanwhile, will be entering his contract year. The Redskins will have to add some depth at cornerback.

Pick change; previously D.J. Fluker, OT

  20. Minnesota Vikings: Robert Woods, WR, USC
The front office has to add more talent to complement a very inconsistent Christian Ponder. The Vikings need an upgrade across from Percy Harvin, as Jerome Simpson is way too inconsistent to be a No. 2 receiver. Harvin may not even be back with the Vikings next year, so Minnesota may target two wideout upgrades this offseason.

Pick change; previously D.J. Fluker, OT

  21. Cincinnati Bengals: Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington
Nate Clements will be a free agent after this season, while Terence Newman won’t be around much longer. The Bengals will need a more permanent solution to go along with Leon Hall and Dre Kirkpatrick.

Pick change; previously T.J. McDonald, S

  22. Miami Dolphins: Carrington Byndom, CB, Texas
The Dolphins have an extra Day 2 pick because they dealt Vontae Davis to the Colts, so they should probably use one of them on a replacement.

Pick change; previously Stedman Bailey, WR

  23. Green Bay Packers: Eddie Lacy, RB, Alabama
James Starks has yet to prove that he can stay healthy, while Alex Green has shown nothing in several starts. Cedric Benson is obviously not a long-term answer, though I’ve been impressed with DuJuan Harris in his limited action. Still, the Packers may address the running back position early in the 2013 NFL Draft. Eddie Lacy and Harris would complement each other pretty well.

  24. Seattle Seahawks: Sylvester Williams, DT, North Carolina
Seattle’s defense is dominant, but one thing the unit is lacking is a consistent interior pass-rushing presence. Perhaps Sylvester Williams and his six sacks this year can fix that.

  25. Houston Texans: Jesse Williams, NT, Alabama
The one piece the Texans seem to be missing defensively is a run-stuffing nose tackle. Shaun Cody (a free agent) and Earl Mitchell are just mediocre talents, at best. Jesse Williams is one of the top available prospects.

Pick change; previously Robert Woods, WR

  26. Denver Broncos: Logan Ryan, CB, Rutgers
It really bothered me that none of the ESPN shows discussed how unbelievably bad Champ Bailey was against the Ravens. He looked like a member of New Orleans’ secondary. He could be done. Tony Carter, meanwhile, is a free agent. The Broncos suddenly need help at corner.

Pick change; previously Larry Warford, G

  27. Baltimore Ravens: Da’Rick Rogers, WR, Tennessee Tech
The Ravens need to add some weapons for the inconsistent Joe Flacco. The declining Anquan Boldin will be entering his contract year and will have to be replaced soon. There’s some talk that he could even be a cap casualty this offseason despite his brilliant performance against the Colts.

Pick change; previously Brennan Williams, OT

  28. San Francisco 49ers: Stedman Bailey, WR, West Virginia
Mario Manningham could be released in the coming months. He’s owed close to $4 million in non-guaranteed money, and he’s coming off a torn ACL and PCL that he suffered in late December.

Pick change; previously Jordan Poyer, CB

  29. New England Patriots: David Amerson, CB/S, N.C. State
Despite Steve Gregory’s performance against the pathetic Jets, New England still has issues at safety it’ll need to address this offseason. David Amerson may have to move to safety in the NFL, but I’m sure Bill Belichick will love his versatility.

  30. Atlanta Falcons: Larry Warford, G, Kentucky
Peter Konz could eventually move to center and replace Todd McClure, but the Falcons will still need an upgrade at right guard. Because of Konz’s versatility, they can afford to take the top interior lineman available.

Pick change; previously Joseph Randle, RB
