2013 NFL Mock Draft: Round 4

Last update: Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013. Major changes in all 4 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

You can find the complete seven-round 2013 NFL Draft Order by clicking the link.

  1. Jacksonville Jaguars: Matt Scott, QB, Arizona
The Jaguars have to spend a pick on a quarterback at some point. New general manager has sounded like a lunatic in his praise for Blaine Gabbert, but he must have a backup plan if/when Gabbert sucks again. Jacksonville has been linked to Matt Scott.

Pick change; previously Sean Porter, DE/OLB

  2. Kansas City Chiefs: Ryan Nassib, QB, Syracuse
The Chiefs will likely trade one of their early selections away for Nick Foles, so this is basically a voided pick. I slotted Ryan Nassib here because I couldn’t find a spot for him. The picture will be clearer once teams start signing/trading quarterbacks in March.

Pick change; previously William Gholston, DE/DT

  3. Oakland Raiders: Tank Carradine, DE, Florida State
The Raiders really missed Kamerion Wimbley. There’s a reason only the Jaguars had fewer sacks in the NFL this year. Oakland needs to find a legitimate pass-rusher.

Pick change; previously Jordan Hill, DT

  4. Philadelphia Eagles: Tony Jefferson, S, Oklahoma
Nate Allen and Kurt Coleman both finished in the top 12 for missed tackles among safeties even though they each were out of the lineup for a couple of games. They also blew tons of coverages each week. The Eagles must find at least one upgrade at the position.

  5. Minnesota Vikings: Kiko Alonso, ILB, Oregon
Jasper Brinkley needs to be upgraded, so the Vikings will be looking for middle linebacker help at some point this offseason. Manti Te’o, Alec Ogletree and Kevin Minter are strong possibilities in Round 1. If Minnesota takes someone else, a prospect like A.J. Klein would make sense at this juncture.

Pick change; previously A.J. Klein, ILB

  6. Arizona Cardinals: John Simon, DE/OLB, Ohio State
John Simon, who provides great value here in Round 4, could bolster an inconsistent pass rush and displace the injury-prone O’Brien Schofield.

Pick change; previously Andre Ellington, RB

  7. Cleveland Browns: Gavin Escobar, TE, San Diego State
Ben Watson is a free agent, while Jordan Cameron, drafted by the old regime, hasn’t shown much yet. The Browns will likely search for a tight end upgrade this offseason.

Pick change; previously Dion Sims, TE

  8. Buffalo Bills: Jelani Jenkins, OLB, Florida
Kelvin Sheppard was a big disappointment in his sophomore campaign. Nick Barnett, meanwhile, was just released. Two upgrades are needed at linebacker.

  9. New York Jets: Joseph Randle, RB, Oklahoma State
The Jets need to give their next quarterback some weapons to work with. Both the receiver and tight end positions need to be upgraded (see third-round pick). Running back must be addressed as well. Shonn Greene’s a free agent, but he wasn’t very good anyway. Joseph Randle is the top player available.

Pick change; previously Mike Gillislee, RB

  10. Tennessee Titans: Andre Ellington, RB, Clemson
Chris Johnson’s production picked up at the end of the year, but he still did a ton of dancing at the line of scrimmage. The Titans should add a mid-round running back just in case CJ2K sucks again.

Pick change; previously Tank Carradine, DE

  11. Carolina Panthers: Ryan Swope, WR, Texas A&M
Steve Smith will turn 34 a couple of weeks after the 2013 NFL Draft. The Panthers will need to think about finding a new No. 1 wideout for the future. I’m also not a big Brandon LaFell believer, so an upgrade across from Smith wouldn’t hurt.

  12. New Orleans Saints: B.W. Webb, CB, William & Mary
The Saints obviously have to upgrade their secondary after sporting one of the worst pass defenses of all time in 2012.

Pick change; previously Leon McFadden, CB

  13. San Diego Chargers: Sean Porter, DE/OLB, Texas A&M
Shaun Phillips will be a 32-year-old free agent in March, so San Diego will need a complement for Ingram if it can’t retain its long-time veteran.

Pick change; previously John Simon, DE/OLB

  14. Miami Dolphins: William Gholston, DE/DT, Michigan State
Olivier Vernon is expected to start across from Cameron Wake next year. The Dolphins like Vernon, but they’ll have to add some competition for him.

Pick change; previously Justin Pugh, G/OT

  15. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Chris Faulk, OT, LSU
Donald Penn struggled to close out the year, while Demar Dotson isn’t very good. The Buccaneers will be looking to bring in another tackle.

Pick change; previously Zac Dysert, QB

  16. St. Louis Rams: Sanders Commings, S, Georgia
The Rams’ defense was great this past season, but they have a couple of areas they need to address. One such spot is the safety position. Craig Dahl must be upgraded.

Pick change; previously Zaviar Gooden, OLB

  17. Dallas Cowboys: Shawn Williams, S, Georgia
The safety position was a major weak point for Dallas this past season after Barry Church tore his Achilles’ tendon. Church was extended prior to the injury, but he’s owed less than $1 million next year, so that won’t prevent the Cowboys from picking a safety early.

Pick change; previously Devin Taylor, DE

  18. Pittsburgh Steelers: T.J. McDonald, S, USC
Troy Polamalu can’t seem to get healthy, while Ryan Clark, who just turned 33, will be entering his contract year. The Steelers need to get younger at safety.

Pick change; previously Kenny Stills, S

  19. New York Giants: A.J. Klein, ILB, Iowa State
The Giants have issues in the middle of their defense. The safety position is a problem, as is inside linebacker. Chase Blackburn shouldn’t be starting, while Keith Rivers, a free agent in March, can never get healthy. General manager Jerry Reese said that there needs to be better linebacker play next year.

Pick change; previously Terron Armstread, OT

  20. Chicago Bears: Dion Sims, TE, Michigan State
Even more help for Jay Cutler, who desperately needs an intermediate target to throw to.

Pick change; previously Vance McDonald, TE

  21. Cincinnati Bengals: Brian Schwenke, C, California
Cincinnati’s offensive line did a great job for the most part in 2012, but the weak link was at center. Brian Schwenke was one of the stars at the Senior Bowl. He could provide an upgrade.

  22. Washington Redskins: Will Davis, CB, Utah State
DeAngelo Hall, who has been inconsistent this year, is due $7.5 million in 2013, but none of it is guaranteed. Josh Wilson, meanwhile, will be entering his contract year. The Redskins will have to add some depth at cornerback.

  23. Minnesota Vikings: Zac Dysert, QB, Miami of Ohio
The Vikings have to find a developmental quarterback because Joe Webb is not the answer. Someone has to be groomed in order to push Christian Ponder eventually.

Pick change; previously Oday Aboushi, G/OT

  24. Indianapolis Colts: Oday Aboushi, G/OT, Virginia
If you’ve watched the Colts at all in the final couple of weeks to close out the season, you know that their offensive line must be upgraded because Andrew Luck constantly had defenders in his face. The weakest of Luck’s blockers is right guard Mike McGlynn, who was guilty of four sacks in the final four games.

Pick change; previously Chase Thomas, DE/OLB

  25. Green Bay Packers: Christine Michael, RB, Texas A&M
James Starks has yet to prove that he can stay healthy, while Alex Green has shown nothing in several starts. Cedric Benson is obviously not a long-term answer, though I’ve been impressed with DuJuan Harris in his limited action. Still, the Packers may address the running back position early in the 2013 NFL Draft. They’ve been linked to Christine Michael per various sources.

  26. Seattle Seahawks: Terron Armstead, OT, Arkansas-Pine Bluff
Breno Giacomini was absolutely embarrassed in the season finale by Chris Long. Granted, Long has made so many right tackles look bad this year, but Giacomini has struggled in pass protection for most of the season.

Pick change; previously Jordan Mills, OT

  27. Houston Texans: Hugh Thornton, G, Illinois
The Texans want to bolster their offensive line this offseason. The right guard position was an issue last year.

  28. Denver Broncos: Jon Bostic, ILB, Florida
Keith Brooking, 37, saw extensive action at middle linebacker this past season when Joe Mays was lost for the year. Neither is very good, so the Broncos could be looking at an upgrade early in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Pick change; previously Montee Ball, RB

  29. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Jordan Hill, DT, Penn State
The Buccaneers need to find some interior pass-rushing help this offseason. There’s no other threat besides Gerald McCoy.

Pick change; previously Chris Faulk, OT

  30. Atlanta Falcons: Zaviar Gooden, OLB, Missouri
As noted in my Atlanta Falcons Offseason Needs page, the Falcons’ play at linebacker must improve. Stephen Nicholas can’t be on the field on all three downs, while Akeem Dent was a disappointment in his first season as a starter. The team needs to find a linebacker capable of playing all three downs with Sean Weatherspoon.

Pick change; previously Sio Moore, OLB

  31. San Francisco 49ers: Brandon Jenkins, DE/OLB, Florida State
The 49ers will probably plan to do something about their serious lack of depth at rush linebacker this offseason.

  32. Baltimore Ravens: Tharold Simon, CB, LSU
The Ravens suddenly have glaring issues at cornerback. Lardarius Webb tore an ACL for the second time in his career, while Cary Williams is a free agent

Pick change; previously Jon Bostic, ILB
