Live 2023 NFL Draft Grades: Round 4

These Live 2023 NFL Draft Grades will be posted minutes after each pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Follow @walterfootball for updates.

2023 NFL Draft Grades - Round: Picks 1-16 | Picks 17-32 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | NFL Draft Team Grades

  1. New Orleans Saints: Nick Saldiveri, G/OT, Old Dominion – C- Grade
I’m not sure why the Saints needed to trade up for Nick Saldiveri, who was a late-round prospect. Saldiveri is at least a versatile lineman – he can play tackle and guard – which is key because New Orleans needed blocking help.

  2. Las Vegas Raiders: Jakorian Bennett, CB, Maryland – B- Grade
The Raiders obviously needed a cornerback and could have taken Christian Gonzalez at No. 7 overall. Jakorian Bennett was a steady corner at Maryland, but might be limited to slot duties in the NFL. I think the Raiders could have gotten a better corner, but this pick is OK.

  3. Philadelphia Eagles: Kelee Ringo, CB, Georgia – A+ Grade
Surprise, surprise, the Eagles drafted a Georgia player. Kelee Ringo is a big cornerback with tons of upside, and he easily could have been chosen in the second round. This is tremendous value, and it fills a long-term need.

  4. Indianapolis Colts: Blake Freeland, OT, BYU – A Grade
The Colts’ offensive line is not what it once was. Their blocking was poor at times last year, so offensive line help was needed with Anthony Richardson now under center. Blake Freeland is a very athletic tackle with tons of upside. He could have easily gone a round earlier than this.

  5. New England Patriots: Jake Andrews, C, Troy – C- Grade
Patriots fans can’t be upset with the team drafting an offensive lineman, given how bad the blocking was last year. However, Bill Belichick is going off the board again, as Jake Andrews was a borderline draftable prospect. New England should have traded down.

  6. Seattle Seahawks: Anthony Bradford, OT/G, LSU – B+ Grade
The Seahawks had two stud rookies at tackle last year, but needed help at guard. Anthony Bradford can actually play both positions. He’s a solid prospect who looked very smooth in the combine drills to help himself. This is a quality pick to help Geno Smith.

  7. Houston Texans: Dylan Horton, DE/OLB, TCU – B Grade
Dylan Horton had a great season last year as a dynamic pass rusher for TCU. The Texans needed someone to get after the quarterback, and Horton fits the range. This is a fine pick for a team that needed to revamp its defense.

  8. Indianapolis Colts: Ade Adebawore, DE/DT, Northwestern – A+ Grade
The Colts are having a great start to Day 3. Ade Adebawore is a highly athletic defensive lineman who could have easily gone early on Day 2. He’ll help with the pass rush to combat Trevor Lawrence.

  9. Cleveland Browns: Dawand Jones, OT, Ohio State – A+ Grade
The Colts brought in plenty of offensive linemen for top-30 visits, as they wanted depth and a successor for Jack Conklin. Dawand Jones is a massive offensive lineman who will blast open huge running lanes for Nick Chubb. He could have gone in the second round, so I love this value.

  10. New England Patriots: Chad Ryland, K, Maryland – DON’T KICK THE 100-PERCENT USDA MAN IN THE NUTS MILLEN Grade
Not only did the Patriots waste a fourth-round pick on a kicker; they traded up for one! This is a Millen grade, through and through. Kickers should be chosen in the late rounds, and no one should ever trade up for one.

  11. Atlanta Falcons: Clark Phillips, CB, Utah – A Grade
The Falcons drafting a cornerback should be a surprise to no one, so this definitely fills a big need. Clark Phillips is a talented cornerback, but has size issues. He’ll be limited to nickel play, but that’s what Atlanta is looking for, so I like this pick.

  12. Carolina Panthers: Chandler Zavala, G, N.C. State – B Grade
Protecting Bryce Young is obviously incredibly important, and the Panthers needed to improve their blocking. Chandler Zavala fits the range as a Round 4-5 prospect, so this is fine selection.

  13. Chicago Bears: Roschon Johnson, RB, Texas – B Grade
The Bears have taken the “other” Texas running back, which seems like a quality decision because the Bears don’t have the best backfield. Roschon Johnson is a big back with decent receiving ability for a player his size.

  14. Green Bay Packers: Colby Wooden, DE/DT, Auburn – B+ Grade
The Packers needed to continue to address their pass rush, which was very weak last year when they didn’t blitz. Colby Wooden will help generate pressure on the quarterback as a 3-4 defensive lineman. I had him in this range in my mock, so I like the pick.

  15. New England Patriots: Sidy Sow, G, Eastern Michigan – D Grade
Talk about going off the draft board. I never once considered putting Sidy Sow in the seventh round of my mock draft, so the Patriots are just beginning the UDFA segment early. At least they addressed the offensive line…

  16. Washington Redskins: Braeden Daniels, G/OT, Utah – B Grade
Braeden Daniels played tackle in college, but will have to move to guard in the NFL. However, he should be able to play well at guard for a team that needed help with interior blocking.

  17. Kansas City Chiefs: Chamarri Connor, S/CB, Virginia Tech – C- Grade
I don’t get why the Chiefs traded up for Chamarri Connor, when he should have been available late in the draft. However, he fills a need, as the Chiefs lost Juan Thornhill this offseason. Connor is a solid in run support.

  18. New York Jets: Carter Warren, OT, Pittsburgh – B- Grade
The Jets get their high-upside tackle, albeit much later than originally planned. Carter Warren needs improvements in his game, but he has the ability to eventually become a starting tackle in the NFL. He could have been obtained a bit later, but at least the Jets traded down.

  19. Jacksonville Jaguars: Ventrell Miller, LB, Florida – B+ Grade
Ventrell Miller won’t be a three-down defender, but that’s fine because he’ll help the Jaguars defend the run. I had Miller around this range, so I’m a fan of Jacksonville drafting him at this spot.

  20. Arizona Cardinals: Jon Gaines, G, UCLA – B Grade
The Cardinals are getting an athletic offensive lineman to help Kyler Murray. The injured quarterback has to be happy about this pick. Jon Gaines has high upside, so this is a good pick in the middle of the fourth frame.

  21. Seattle Seahawks: Cameron Young, NT, Mississippi State – B Grade
The Seahawks were terrible against the run last year, so they needed to make a pick like this. Cameron Young will help them stuff the rush. He makes sense in the middle of the fourth round.

  22. Baltimore Ravens: Tavius Robinson, DE, Southeastern – D Grade
I didn’t have Tavius Robinson remotely close to any of my mock draft. While Robinson has good athleticism, he is a tweener and needs to add strength. I figured he’d be a UDFA.

  23. Los Angeles Chargers: Derius Davis, WR, TCU – B Grade
The Chargers apparently were big fans of the TCU receiving corps. Derius Davis is extremely fast and should be used in the slot at the next level. The Chargers needed to revamp the receiving corps, so this pick makes sense.

  24. Cleveland Browns: Isaiah McGuire, DE, Missouri – C+ Grade
The Browns needed to continue to bolster their defensive line, which was very weak last year outside of Myles Garrett. Isaiah McGuire is a powerful defensive lineman who could do well in Cleveland’s rotation. I had him going later though.

  25. New Orleans Saints: Jake Haener, QB, Fresno State – C+ Grade
The Saints needed a quarterback of the future, so Jake Haener makes sense to fill that role. Haener is an accurate quarterback, but has an injury history. I think there were better options at the position, but I don’t hate this pick.

  26. Los Angeles Rams: Stetson Bennett, QB, Georgia – A+ Grade
The Rams have their quarterback of the future, something they needed with Matthew Stafford old and injured. Stetson Bennett is a great leader with an underrated arm. He’s short, but that’s his only downfall. Sean McVay should be able to develop him very well.

  27. Dallas Cowboys: Villami Fehoko, DE, San Jose State – B Grade
The Cowboys made a big mistake by passing on Nolan Smith and allowing him to fall to the Eagles, but they eventually got the additional edge rusher they were looking for. Villami Fehoko made nice improvements throughout his career at San Jose State.

  28. Jacksonville Jaguars: Tyler Lacy, DE, Oklahoma State – B Grade
The Jaguars are getting a high-upside player in Tyler Lacy. However, Lacy needs to get bigger and stronger for the NFL, as he doesn’t appear to be ready to play many snaps in the pros at the moment. I actually had Lacy going one pick earlier, so the range makes sense.

  29. Cincinnati Bengals: Charlie Jones, WR, Purdue – A Grade
The Bengals add yet another receiver for the future when they’ll have to trade either Tee Higgins or Tyler Boyd. I like Charlie Jones quite a bit; he’s a shifty route runner with reliable hands. I thought he could have gone in the third round.

  30. Pittsburgh Steelers: Nick Herbig, DE/OLB, Wisconsin – B+ Grade
The Steelers were 8-2 with T.J. Watt last year, but really struggled without him. Edge-rushing depth was needed, and Nick Herbig is a very talented player who can get good pressure on the quarterback. The problem is that he’s small, so he’ll have to be a situational pass rusher to start, but I like this value at the end of the fourth round.

  31. Chicago Bears: Tyler Scott, WR, Cincinnati – A- Grade
I had Tyler Scott going about 20-25 picks earlier than this, so I’m a fan of this value. Tyler Scott is a small receiver, but he’s extremely quick. He should be able to help Justin Fields.

  32. Minnesota Vikings: Jay Ward, S, LSU – B Grade
The Vikings have a poor secondary, so they needed to add numerous defensive backs to help their woeful pass defense. Jay Ward moved from cornerback to safety at LSU, which proved to be a smooth transition. He’s a sound tackler, and I think he should have gone in this range.

  33. Las Vegas Raiders: Aidan O’Connell, QB, Purdue – A- Grade
Josh McDaniels said he wanted a quarerback for the long haul, so here he is. Aidan O’Connell has a good arm and really improved his accuracy last year. I like this pick, as I had O’Connell going 24 selections earlier.
