Live 2022 NFL Draft Grades: Round 6

These Live 2022 NFL Draft Grades will be posted minutes after each pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Follow @walterfootball for updates.

2022 NFL Draft Grades - Round: Picks 1-16 | Picks 17-32 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | NFL Draft Team Grades

  1. Buffalo Bills: Matt Araiza, K/P, San Diego State – B+ Grade
Wait, Walt is grading a kicker/punter pick favorably? Yes, and I almost can’t believe it. Two things, though. First, this is the sixth round, which is not the fourth round. Second, Matt Araiza can play both punter and kicker, so he can save a roster spot, which could end up being very valuable.

  2. Philadelphia Eagles: Kyron Johnson, LB, Kansas – C Grade
I don’t know why the Eagles traded up for Kyron Johnson when they could’ve obtained him or a similar player at their natural spot. Still, Eagles fans won’t be too upset about another linebacker, given the huge need.

  3. New York Giants: Darrian Beavers, LB, Cincinnati – A Grade
Of the two NFC East teams that picked linebackers in the sixth round, the Giants made the better choice. Not only did they not trade up for Darrian Beavers; they obtained the superior prospect, as I had Beavers in the fourth round.

  4. New England Patriots: Kevin Harris, RB, South Carolina – D Grade
I’m not going to flunk the Patriots for a sixth-round pick, but this is ridiculous at this point. They’re not addressing any sort of need, and they’re taking a player who was a consensus UDFA. Forget the hate mail; Bill Belichick may send a bomb to my house!

  5. Minnesota Vikings: Vederian Lowe, OT, Illinois – B Grade
Offensive line depth is always welcome, and Vederian Lowe brings tons of starting experience with him. He has a decent chance of making the roster. I thought he would go around this range, maybe a bit later.

  6. Buffalo Bills: Christian Benford, CB, Villanova – C Grade
I never had Christian Benford on my radar as a draftable prospect. He was a productive player at Villanova, but it was just Villanova. At the very worst, he’ll provide needed depth at cornerback if he makes the roster.

  7. Chicago Bears: Zachary Thomas, OT/G, San Diego State – B Grade
I don’t like this offensive line pick as much as I did the last one Chicago made, but it’s still a solid choice. Zachary Thomas can play both tackle and guard, and his versatility will be key for a team with severe blocking issues.

  8. San Francisco 49ers: Nick Zakelj, OT, Fordham – B+ Grade
Another tackle pick may seem redundant, but the 49ers are making a great value choice because I thought Nick Zakelj could have easily been chosen in the fourth round. It’s nice that San Francisco shored up its offensive line depth.

  9. Detroit Lions: Malcolm Rodriguez, LB, Oklahoma State – B+ Grade
The Lions had tons of neds entering the 2022 NFL Draft, and linebacker was one of them. Malcolm Rodriguez was someone I had in the fifth- or sixth-round range, so this seems like another solid choice for Detroit.

  10. Carolina Panthers: Amare Barno, DE, Virignia Tech – A Grade
I was told that the Panthers wanted to address their edge-rushing depth with one of their “earlier” picks in this draft. They finally addressed the situation with this pick, and they did so with an incredible value. I had Amare Barno in the third round of my mock in some updates!

  11. Atlanta Falcons: Justin Shaffer, G, Georgia – B+ Grade
Justin Shaffer is a big guard with some upside. The Falcons needed help on the offensive line, which goes without saying because they had holes everywhere. However, blocking was a major issue that desperately needed to be addressed. I had Shaffer a round earlier than this.

  12. Minnesota Vikings: Jalen Nailor, WR, Michigan State – B Grade
Jalen Nailor missed some action last year, but he was projected to go in this range, so that didn’t cost him his draft position. The Vikings needed receiving depth with Adam Thielen turning 32, so this is a solid choice.

  13. Indianapolis Colts: Andrew Ogletree, TE, Youngstown State – A- Grade
Andrew Ogletree never found his way into my mock draft, but perhaps he should have after his amazing pro day. He ran a 4.69 and benched 26 reps at 260 pounds. You have to love the swing for the fences at a position of need.

  14. Dallas Cowboys: Devin Harper, LB, Oklahoma State – B+ Grade
It’s no surprise that the Cowboys are addressing their need for linebacker depth. Devin Harper seems like a decent choice here in the sixth round, as I had him in this range in my updates.

  15. New Orleans Saints: Jordan Jackson, DT, Air Force – B+ Grade
Jordan Jackson is an intriguing pick because he generated so much pressure in college. The problem is the level of competition, but perhaps he’ll be able to continue to thrive in the pros. I like this gamble, as there’s not much risk in the sixth round.

  16. Los Angeles Chargers: Jamaree Salyer, G, Georgia – A Grade
What took Jamaree Salyer so long to come off the board? I had him in the third- or fourth-round range. He played tackle at Georgia, but will have to move to guard in the NFL. Still, Salyer could have some versatility, and he provides great value for the Chargers.

  17. Baltimore Ravens: Tyler Badie, RB, Missouri – A- Grade
I’ve had Tyler Badie going a bit earlier than this in my mocks, so I like the value. Badie is a small back, but he has positive strength and quickness. He’ll provide needed depth for the Ravens, who have nothing but injured running backs on their roster.

  18. Jacksonville Jaguars: Gregory Junior, CB, Ouachita – B Grade
Gregory Junior was very productive at Ouachita, but he’ll face much tougher competition in the NFL, obviously. This is the right range to pick him though, so it’s a solid pick for a Jaguar team that needed cornerback help.

  19. Philadelphia Eagles: Grant Calcaterra, TE, SMU – B Grade
Grant Calcaterra is a major injury risk. He actually had to retire for a season because of concussion issues. He could be a big producer if he sticks around in the NFL, but one more head injury could be curtains for him.

  20. Carolina Panthers: Cade Mays, OT, Tennessee – B+ Grade
Cade Mays has great physical talent, but he has some injury concerns. If he can get over those, he’ll be a potential starter down the road for the Panthers, though that may not be so difficult, given the team’s major blocking issues. It’s nice that Mays can play every position.

  21. New England Patriots: Sam Roberts, DL, Northwest Missouri State University – D Grade
Bill Belichick is going off the grid and picking players no one has ever heard of before. Sam Roberts has nice size, but he was not on anyone’s radar as a draftable prospect.

  22. Arizona Cardinals: Keontay Ingram, RB, USC – A- Grade
I had Keontay Ingram a round earlier than this, so I like the value. Ingram is a nice receiving back, which is crucial because Arizona lost Chase Edmonds this offseason.

  23. Cleveland Browns: Mike Woods, WR, Oklahoma – C Grade
Mike Woods was not a big producer at Oklahoma, and I didn’t have him on my radar as a draftable prospect. He would’ve been a fine UDFA, but I don’t know why the Browns drafted him over Justyn Ross, for example.

  24. Chicago Bears: Trestan Ebner, RB, Baylor – B Grade
A Tarik Cohen replacement? This is a fine pick. Trestan Ebner is a small back, but he’s a good receiver out of the backfield who runs quickly.

  25. Tennessee Titans: Theo Jackson, S, Tennessee – C+ Grade
Theo Jackson was a productive player as a quality blitzer at Tennessee, but I didn’t think he was going to be drafted. This is a bit of a reach, but we’re in the middle of the sixth round now, so I don’t think this is a big deal.

  26. Houston Texans: Austin Deculus, OT/G, LSU – A- Grade
It’s no surprise that the Texans are addressing their offensive line again. They’re getting a solid third-day prospect I had in the fifth round. Austin Deculus is a versatile player who can be used at tackle or guard.

  27. Denver Broncos: Matt Henningsen, DE/DT, Wisconsin – B Grade
Matt Henningsen never made it into my mock draft, but perhaps he should have after he posted some terrific numbers at his pro day. I like the Broncos taking a chance on such an athletic player late in the draft. Defensive line depth needed to be addressed.

  28. Chicago Bears: Doug Kramer, C, Illinois – C+ Grade
Doug Kramer was a rock-solid center at Illinois. I just didn’t think he had the athleticism to be in the NFL, but perhaps he’ll prove everyone wrong. Kramer could compete for starting action because Chicago’s offensive line is so bad.

  29. Pittsburgh Steelers: Connor Heyward, FB, Michigan State – B Grade
A fullback was drafted. Huzzah! Connor Heyward is actually the brother of long-time Steeler Cameron Heyward. He’ll help in the running game, which will be crucial because the Steelers have dubious play at quarterback.

  30. Buffalo Bills: Luke Tenuta, OT, Virginia Tech – C- Grade
Luke Tenuta is a tough run-blocking offensive lineman, but I don’t think he has the athleticism to cut it in the NFL. We’ll see if he can prove me wrong. I’m not a fan of this pick, as I didn’t have Tenuta as being drafted at all.

  31. New England Patriots: Chasen Hines, G, LSU – A+ Grade
I can’t believe it. I love a Bill Belichick pick. Maybe he won’t bomb my house after all. Chasen Hines is an absolute steal toward the end of the sixth round. I thought he would be chosen in the third or fourth frame. Charlie Campbell agrees, as he listed Hines on his draft sleepers page.

  32. Los Angeles Rams: Quentin Lake, S, UCLA – B Grade
It makes sense that the Rams would strengthen their safety depth after what happened in the playoffs. They’re doing so with Quentin Lake, whom I believe should be chosen around this range.

  33. Los Angeles Rams: Derion Kendrick, CB, Georgia – A Grade
Derion Kendrick is a talented cornerback, but he has character concerns that caused him to slip. I like the Rams taking a chance on him this late in the draft. Why not? There’s barely any risk, and Kendrick could become a good player who fills a need.

  34. Atlanta Falcons: John Fitzpatrick, TE, Georgia – B+ Grade
The Falcons needed a backup tight end, as Hayden Hurst is no longer with the team. Adding another tight end here makes sense, and John Fitzpatrick fits the range. I thought he could go a bit earlier.

  35. San Angeles Chargers: Ja’Sir Taylor, CB, Wake Forest – B Grade
The Chargers need as many cornerbacks as possible to combat all the passing talent in the division. Ja’Sir Taylor was a likely sixth- or seventh-round pick. He should be able to play in the slot.

  36. Arizona Cardinals: Lecitus Smith, G, Virginia Tech – B+ Grade
I mocked Lecitus Smith to the Cardinals at No. 201, so I like the fit. It’s a nice touch of value, and this pick potentially fills a need. Arizona needed as many blockers as possible to make sure Kyler Murray lasts a full season for once.

  37. Indianapolis Colts: Curtis Brooks, DT, Cincinnati – B Grade
Curtis Brooks is a smaller defensive tackle who will only be used on pass-rushing downs because he’s such a liability in run defense. Still, a specialist like him is a fine pick toward the end of the sixth round. He makes sense in this range.

  38. Detroit Lions: James Houston, DE/OLB, Jackson State – A- Grade
The Lions know they need as many pass rushers as possible to consistently beat Aaron Rodgers and Kirk Cousins. James Houston is a quality edge rusher I mocked in the fifth round, so I like this value Detroit is getting toward the end of the sixth frame.

  39. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Ko Kieft, TE, Minnesota – C Grade
I’d ordinarily scoff at blocking tight end picks, but this is the end of the sixth round, so that’s fine at this juncture. Ko Kieft was not someone I projected to be drafted, however.

  40. Tennessee Titans: Chance Campbell, LB, Ole Miss – C Grade
I thought this said Charlie Campbell for a second, which would be a better pick for Tennessee. Chance Campbell has been a productive linebacker for both Ole Miss and Maryland throughout his collegiate career, but I didn’t think he would be drafted.

  41. San Francisco 49ers: Kalia Davis, DT, Central Florida – B+ Grade
Kalia Davis is a big run-stuffer, which is key for the 49ers as they try to combat the Rams and Seahawks. Davis is coming off a torn ACL, causing him to drop in the 2022 NFL Draft. At this point, he’s worth the risk.

  42. San Francisco 49ers: Tariq Castro-Fields, CB, Penn State – A- Grade
Wow, this is quite the fall for Tariq Castro-Fields, who used to appear in the second round of my mocks. Castro-Fields, however, had a horrible 2021 campaign. Perhaps he’s been exposed, but he could rebound and perform like he did prior to 2021. I like this gamble.
