2018 NFL Trade Mock: Picks 1-16

  1. Los Angeles Chargers: Da’Ron Payne, DT, Alabama
The Chargers would be crazy to move out of No. 17 if a stud nose tackle like Da’Ron Payne fell into their lap. Payne is the best player available and fills a big need, so he’s the easy choice.

  2. New York Giants: Marcus Davenport, DE, Texas-San Antonio
*** Trade 8: Giants acquire No. 18 overall from Seahawks for second-, third- and fourth-round picks (Nos. 34, 66, 108) ***

This is something I discussed in my 2018 NFL Draft Proposed Trade article. In short, the Seahawks need to move down because they don’t pick again until No. 120, while the Giants can obtain a talented edge rusher after passing on one at No. 5 overall.

  3. Baltimore Ravens: Calvin Ridley, WR, Alabama
It’s nice that the Ravens can move back three spots and select the player I slotted to them in my real 2018 NFL Mock Draft. This would also earn a very high grade, though I don’t like Calvin Ridley as much as Vita Vea.

  4. Detroit Lions: Taven Bryan, DT, Florida
I think the Lions will stay put and select Taven Bryan. He’s a great fit for them, and I don’t think they’d be able to obtain him after trading down.

  5. Cincinnati Bengals: James Daniels, C, Iowa
The Bengals typically don’t like to trade on draft day. I’m not saying it won’t happen, but Mike Brown is like that fantasy owner in your league who will reject every single proposal you send to him without any counter-offers. That guy is me, by the way, in all of my leagues. I think I’ve made one fantasy trade in the past five years, and that deal was getting Kirk Cousins for Jameis Winston, solely because of bye-week conflicts with the starters.

  6. Buffalo Bills: Isaiah Wynn, G/C, Georgia
I thought about having the Bills trade down because they’ve moved up twice already. However, they still have tons of draft capital, so I don’t think they’ll be in any hurry to slide down from this selection, especially if they can get a talented blocker for their new quarterback.

  7. Washington Redskins: Derrius Guice, RB, LSU
It would take a Laremy Tunsil bong-type situation for Saquon Barkley to slip to No. 13, so taking any other running back at that juncture would be a major reach. Getting Derrius Guice at No. 23, on the other hand, is much more reasonable. Guice would be a nice boon for the Redskins and their dormant rushing attack.

  8. Carolina Panthers: Joshua Jackson, CB, Iowa
The Panthers have two third-round picks, so they won’t be desperate to trade down. Why make a move when a talented player who fills a need like Joshua Jackson is available?

  9. Minnesota Vikings: Will Hernandez, G, UTEP
*** Trade 9: Vikings acquire No. 25 overall from Titans for No. 30 overall, fifth-round pick (No. 167) and 2019 third-round pick ***

The Vikings really want to upgrade their offensive line, and yet the only first-round guard still available (Will Hernandez) could be taken by the Falcons, Dolphins, Cardinals and Jaguars. Minnesota could leap all of them, and it would be possible because the team has a bunch of extra sixth-round selections.

  10. Atlanta Falcons: Courtland Sutton, WR, SMU
Courtland Sutton is the best player available, and he would be a logical choice in this scenario. The Falcons need to make sure their offense still functions if Julio Jones misses time.

  11. Miami Dolphins: Rashaan Evans, LB, Alabama
The Dolphins currently don’t have a viable strongside linebacker on their roster right now. Roquan Smith would be a great choice at No. 11, while Rashaan Evans makes just as much sense at this spot.

  12. Arizona Cardinals: Kolton Miller, OT, UCLA
The Cardinals missed out on Mike McGlinchey at No. 15, so they decided to trade down. Getting Kolton Miller with the 28th-overall choice is a nice consolation prize.

  13. Jacksonville Jaguars: D.J. Moore, WR, Maryland
Jacksonville’s receivers did a good job this past season in the wake of Allen Robinson’s injury, but none of them projects as a true No. 1. There’s no sense in trading down when a solid value like D.J. Moore is available.

  14. Tennessee Titans: Harold Landry, DE/OLB, Boston College
What a steal! Harold Landry could easily go in the 18-25 range, yet the Titans still obtained him after moving down. This is another A+ grade.

  15. New England Patriots: Jaire Alexander, CB, Louisville
The Patriots lost Malcolm Butler. Jason McCourty will replace him in the next year or two, but they’ll need a long-term answer across from Stephon Gilmore.

  16. Indianapolis Colts: Sony Michel, RB, Georgia
*** Trade 10: Colts acquire No. 32 overall from Eagles for second- and fourth-round picks (Nos. 36, 104) ***

The Eagles have to move down. After the first round, they don’t pick again until No. 130. The Colts, meanwhile, have lots of draft capital, which is a good thing because they’re in desperate need of lots of things, one of which might be a running back. They could be scared that the Seahawks will take their runner of choice (Sony Michel?) so this is their chance to leap over them.

  17. Cleveland Browns: Maurice Hurst, DE/DT, Michigan
I’ve decided to include the top four picks of the second round because two of them were involved in trades.

The Browns acquired several players recently, but they did manage to trade one away. That was Danny Shelton, a run-plugger. Larry Ogunjobi will take his place, but Cleveland needs an interior rusher to start next to Ogunjobi.

  18. Seattle Seahawks: Ronald Jones, RB, USC
It turns out the Colts were right in that the Seahawks were targeting a running back after trading down. Sony Michel might be the better prospect, but Ronald Jones has great potential as well.

  19. Cleveland Browns: Brian O’Neill, OT, Pittsburgh
Joe Thomas has retired, so the Browns will need to spend an early resource on a left tackle. Unfortunately for them, there aren’t many exciting options in this draft class.

  20. Philadelphia Eagles: Mike Hughes, CB, Central Florida
The Eagles could move down again – they now don’t pick again until No. 104 – but for simplicity’s sake, I’ll just have them take a player here. I think Mike Hughes is a great fit for them, as he would be able to take the departed Patrick Robinson’s spot and cover the slot very well.
