2014 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2

Last update: Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013. Major changes in all 3 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

The order of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft is based on my NFL Power Rankings.

*** THIS IS A LIVE 2014 NFL MOCK DRAFT. PICKS ARE BEING POSTED NOW. TO SEE PREVIOUS VERSIONS, CHECK OUT THE ARCHIVED 2013 NFL MOCK DRAFT SECTION. FOLLOW @walterfootball FOR UPDATES ***

  1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Zach Mettenberger, QB, LSU
The Buccaneers could have a new regime in place next year, so the new front office may want to draft their own quarterback, even if Mike Glennon plays well to close out the year.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

  2. Jacksonville Jaguars: Lache Seastrunk, RB, Baylor
Maurice Jones-Drew is an impending free agent. He’ll likely want to leave such a terrible situation, so the Jaguars will need to find a new running back.

  3. Minnesota Vikings: Anthony Johnson, DT, LSU
The Vikings drafted Sharrif Floyd, but they’ll need another defensive tackle with Kevin Williams being an impending free agent. Besides, Anthony Johnson is the top player available.

Pick change; previously Trent Murphy, DE

  4. Houston Texans: Ryan Shazier, LB, Ohio State
The Texans really wanted to add some inside linebackers in the 2013 NFL Draft, but never got around to it (Arthur Brown was snagged off the board right before they picked in Round 2). They remain pretty thin at the position, especially in the wake of yet another injury to Brian Cushing.

Pick change; previously Christian Jones, LB

  5. Atlanta Falcons: Bishop Sankey, RB, Washington
Steven Jackson has been a huge disappointment. He has shown no burst on the rare occasions when he’s been on the field. The Falcons need to just draft a talented running back.

  6. Buffalo Bills: Marcus Roberson, CB, Florida
The Bills were expected to address the cornerback position in the 2013 NFL Draft, but never got around to it. They probably won’t avoid that area two years in a row. Justin Rogers can’t be allowed on the field anymore.

  7. Washington Redskins: Loucheiz Purifoy, CB, Florida
The Redskins have the worst defense in the NFL (though the Falcons may have something to say about that). They’re currently ranked 28th against the pass in terms of YPA, and DeAngelo Hall won’t be around much longer.

  8. Oakland Raiders: Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State
Nick Foles’ stat line should tell you everything you need to know about Oakland’s secondary.

Pick change; previously Aaron Colvin, CB

  9. New York Giants: Cameron Erving, OT, Florida State
The Giants, who have major pass-protection issues, need to shield Eli Manning as he continues into his mid-30s. William Beatty has struggled on the blind side this year, while Justin Pugh has totally been out of place at right tackle. This pick would allow Pugh to slide into his natural guard position.

Pick change; previously Ryan Shazier, LB

  10. Pittsburgh Steelers: Stephon Tuitt, DE/DT, Notre Dame
The Steelers spent a couple of early selections on five-techniques in recent years, but they’ve all disappointed. If that continues – Pittsburgh can’t get any pressure on the quarterback – the front office will have to try someone else.

  11. St. Louis Rams: Kyle Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech
Cornerback wasn’t seen as a need two months ago, but Cortland Finnegan has been torched by everyone this season. If he keeps struggling, the Rams will have to find someone new to play across from Janoris Jenkins.

Pick change; previously Cameron Erving, OT

  12. Miami Dolphins: James Hurst, OT, North Carolina
What a mess. The Dolphins have gotten rid of Richie Incognito and may have lost Jonathan Martin forever. Though Incognito and Martin will resolve their differences in five years, the offensive line still needs multiple upgrades. Ryan Tannehill has taken a league-leading 37 sacks through nine games.

  13. Baltimore Ravens: Adrian Hubbard, DE/OLB, Alabama
This may seem like an odd selection with Terrell Suggs and Elvis Dumervil both playing well, but Courtney Upshaw does not look like he’s developing into a potential starter down the road.

  14. Tennessee Titans: Corey Robinson, OT, South Carolina
The Titans are fine at offensive tackle right now, but Michael Roos and David Stewart will be free agents in 2015 and 2014, respectively (the latter has a voidable year after this upcoming season). They’ll need to retool at the position if they don’t re-sign either of the two.

  15. San Diego Chargers: Trent Murphy, DE/OLB, Stanford
The Chargers were so desperate for help at rush linebacker that they signed Dwight Freeney. The former Colt is obviously not a long-term solution for the team’s pass-rushing woes.

Pick change; previously Jeremiah Attaochu, DE/OLB

  16. Cleveland Browns: Lamarcus Joyner, S, Florida State
Here’s some secondary help for the Browns, who could use someone to challenge Tashaun Gipson at safety.

Pick change; previously Craig Loston, S

  17. Philadelphia Eagles: Brandon Coleman, WR, Rutgers
Jeremy Maclin, who will be a free agent in March, tore his ACL prior to the season. Maclin hasn’t been able to stay healthy throughout his career, so the Eagles may want to search for a new No. 2 receiver next offseason. As with Nick Foles, I’m not buying Riley Cooper yet. He can barely get separation.

  18. Chicago Bears: Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State
The Bears will have to address their two cornerback positions next offseason, as Charles Tillman and Tim Jennings both have expiring contracts.

Pick change; previously Kyle Fuller, CB

  19. Arizona Cardinals: Stephen Morris, QB, Miami
It’s amazing that the Cardinals are 5-4 despite how poorly Carson Palmer has played in most games. He has been guilty of multiple turnovers in seven of nine contests. Arizona needs to find a franchise quarterback before Larry Fitzgerald loses his mind.

Pick change; previously Ed Stinson, DE/DT

  20. Green Bay Packers: Christian Jones, LB, Florida State
The Packers released Desmond Bishop in the offseason. On top of that, the rapidly aging A.J. Hawk will have an expiring contract soon. Ted Thompson will have to address the inside linebacker position in the near future.

Pick change; previously Yawin Smallwood, LB

  21. Dallas Cowboys: Ka’Deem Carey, RB, Arizona
There were reports earlier in the year that the Cowboys don’t trust DeMarco Murray. They’ll try to sign Darren McFadden this offseason. If they’re not successful, perhaps they’ll go with a running back early in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Pick change; previously Justin Gilbert, CB

  22. New York Jets: Yawin Smallwood, ILB, Connecticut
The Jets don’t have particularly strong play at inside linebacker, so they could spend an early selection on a player to challenge David Harris and Demario Davis.

Pick change; previously Ka’Deem Carey, RB

  23. Cincinnati Bengals: Jackson Jeffcoat, DE, Texas
The Bengals drafted Margus Hunt, but they have Michael Johnson hitting free agency soon. With Carlos Dunlap recently extended, it’s very unlikely that Johnson will be retained.

  24. Detroit Lions: Bryan Stork, C, Florida State
Dominic Raiola has seemingly been on Detroit’s roster forever, but he’ll be a 35-year-old free agent in March. The Lions will probably bring in a new center.

  25. Indianapolis Colts: Gabe Jackson, G, Mississippi State
Jim Irsay took to Twitter earlier in the season and demanded better protection for Andrew Luck. I suppose that means the Colts will drafting a lineman or two early.

Pick change; previously Taylor Hart, DE/DT

  26. San Francisco 49ers: Jeremiah Attaochu, DE/OLB, Georgia Tech
The 49ers may consider spending an early pick on a pass-rusher. Aldon Smith, who spent some time in rehab, has a pretty cloudy future with numerous off-the-field issues. San Francisco needs to protect itself in case Smith can’t stay out of trouble.

Pick change; previously Brandin Cooks, WR

  27. Carolina Panthers: Allen Robinson, WR, Penn State
How much longer are the Panthers going to rely on Brandon LaFell as a starting receiver? They need more explosion on offense; not to mention a No. 1 receiver after Steve Smith retires.

Pick change; previously De’Anthony Thomas, RB

  28. New England Patriots: Travis Swanson, C, Arkansas
Ryan Wendell, an impending free agent, has been most responsible for Tom Brady’s poor pass protection.

  29. New Orleans Saints: Ed Stinson, DE/DT, Alabama
I mocked Sheldon Richardson to the Saints a couple of times last spring because they happen to be thin at defensive end in their new 3-4. That’s still the case.

Pick change; previously Henry Anderson, DE/DT

  30. Denver Broncos: Ben Gardner, DE, Stanford
The Broncos are getting to the quarterback once again now that Von Miller is back in the lineup, but they still need to upgrade their pass rush. They can’t count on Shaun Phillips to produce much longer.

  31. Seattle Seahawks: David Yankey, G/OT, Stanford
The Seahawks have multiple areas of concern on their offensive line, including both guard spots. Imagine how potent Russell Wilson would be with upgraded protection.

Pick change; previously Henry Anderson, DE/DT

  32. San Francisco 49ers: Dominique Easley, DE, Florida
The 49ers will need a successor for Justin Smith (Tank Carradine, maybe?) and also some depth on the defensive line. With four Day 2 selections, they can take a chance on someone like Dominique Easley, a tremendous talent who is coming off a terrible injury.
