2014 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2

Last update: Tuesday, April 29, 2014. Major changes in all 6 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

*** This mock draft will be updated at least once per week (Tuesday afternoons and other times for important events.). Check out old versions of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft in the archived mock draft section. Follow @walterfootball for updates. ***

  1. Houston Texans: Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville
You would’ve been locked in a mental ward had you told someone five months ago that the Texans could draft Teddy Bridgewater – in the second round! But Bridgewater is probably going to fall that far. You can check out the various reports in the NFL Draft Rumor Mill, including one article that has an NFC personnel executive (team with a franchise quarterback) saying that Bridgewater is just a “fourth-round guy.”

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

  2. Washington Redskins: Morgan Moses, OT, Virginia
Right tackle Tyler Polumbus will be a free agent after this season, so the Redskins may want to add a potential replacement. As noted on the NFL Draft Rumors page, Tony Pauline reported that Morgan Moses won’t fall beyond Washington at No. 34.

  3. Cleveland Browns: Allen Robinson, WR, Penn State
The Browns had tremendous problems at receiver this past season outside of Josh Gordon. Greg “Mr. Dependable” Little continued to struggle, while Davone Bess was even worse. If Cleveland doesn’t go with Sammy Watkins at No. 4 overall, another receiver will definitely be in play at Nos. 26 and 35.

Pick change; previously Carlos Hyde, RB

  4. Oakland Raiders: Timmy Jernigan, DT, Florida State
I have a feeling Timmy Jernigan will fall during the draft for multiple reasons. If that happens, the Raiders will be more than happy to take him at this juncture, as he would strengthen a weak group of defensive tackles.

  5. Atlanta Falcons: Dee Ford, DE/OLB, Auburn
If the Falcons can’t obtain Jadeveon Clowney or Khalil Mack in the first round, they’ll almost certainly draft a pass-rusher here. Dee Ford fits what Thomas Dimitroff looks for in a prospect. I’m sure Mike Smith would love to have Ford on his team after the Auburn pass-rusher destroyed his offense at the Senior Bowl.

  6. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Jordan Matthews, WR, Vanderbilt
The Buccaneers would love for Sammy Watkins to fall to them at No. 7, but there’s not much of a chance of that happening. They could also take Mike Evans as a solid consolation prize. If, however, they go with the quarterback route, they may opt to address the receiver position in the second round.

Pick change; previously Allen Robinson, WR

  7. Jacksonville Jaguars: Jimmy Garoppolo, QB, Eastern Illinois
The Jaguars have to take a quarterback early for obvious reasons. As mentioned earlier, there have been reports indicating that Jacksonville wants to draft Jimmy Garoppolo in the second round.

  8. Minnesota Vikings: Louis Nix, NT, Notre Dame
Kevin Williams is gone, so the Vikings will need another defensive tackle to pair with Sharrif Floyd and Linval Joseph. Louis Nix is the top player available. Besides, it seems like Rick Spielman is contractually obligated to pick a Notre Dame player in every draft.

Pick change; previously Demarcus Lawrence, DE/OLB

  9. Buffalo Bills: Troy Niklas, TE, Notre Dame
The Bills have to add play-makers around E.J. Manuel, who needs all the help he can get. The tight end position definitely needs to be upgraded.

  10. Tennessee Titans: Jeremy Hill, RB, LSU
The Titans have gotten rid of Chris Johnson, who was signed by the Jets (go here for my NFL Free Agent Signing Grades). Tennessee will obviously be searching for a new lead running back.

  11. New York Giants: Demarcus Lawrence, DE/OLB, Boise State
New York could double dip in the trenches. Justin Tuck was one of many Giants to sign with the Raiders, so a replacement is needed despite the Robert Ayers signing.

Pick change; previously Scott Crichton, DE

  12. St. Louis Rams: JaWuan James, OT, Tennessee
The Rams may not go with a lineman in the first round. If not, they can definitely take one here. JaWuan James has received some first-round grades from teams, and he happens to be a good fit for St. Louis’ offense.

Pick change; previously Dion Bailey, S

  13. Detroit Lions: Cody Latimer, WR, Indiana
I had the Lions moving up for Sammy Watkins in my trades mock. They may do so in real life, but chances are they’ll have to address the receiver position on Day 2.

  14. Pittsburgh Steelers: Stephon Tuitt, DE/DT, Notre Dame
The Steelers lost Ziggy Hood and Al Woods in free agency. Neither was an impactful player, but the team is severely lacking in depth up front. Stephon Tuitt qualifies as best player available.

  15. Dallas Cowboys: Scott Crichton, DE, Oregon State
The Cowboys managed to re-sign Anthony Spencer, but they’re still in desperate need of help at both defensive end and defensive tackle. Scott Crichton is a great fit for Monte Kiffin’s stop unit.

Pick change; previously Jimmie Ward, S

  16. Baltimore Ravens: Cyrus Kouandjio, OT, Alabama
The Ravens are no strangers to drafting Alabama players. Cyrus Kouandjio could be the latest one. I’m sure Ozzie Newsome would consider Kouandjio a steal, given that he was seen as a first-round prospect prior to his Combine medical. Kouandjio fills a big need at right tackle.

Pick change; previously Jordan Matthews, WR

  17. New York Jets: Paul Richardson, WR, Colorado
The Jets need to add more play-makers to the roster because Geno Smith was surrounded by the worst supporting cast in the NFL last year. Eric Decker was signed, but New York needs more receivers.

Pick change; previously Jace Amaro, TE

  18. Miami Dolphins: Chris Borland, ILB, Wisconsin
The Dolphins are in the market for a new middle linebacker, as Dannell Ellerbe predictably struggled this past season. Miami’s new front office has no allegiance to Ellerbe.

  19. Chicago Bears: Marcus Roberson, CB, Florida
Chicago was able to re-sign Tim Jennings recently, while Charles Tillman was brought back, but for only one year. The Bears have to deal with Aaron Rodgers and Matthew Stafford twice per year, so they’ll definitely look to upgrade their secondary with multiple selections.

  20. Arizona Cardinals: Jimmie Ward, S, Northern Illinois
The Cardinals could use some safety help, as free agent Yeremiah Bell is thinking about retirement.

Pick change; previously Terrence Brooks, S

  21. Green Bay Packers: Jace Amaro, TE, Texas Tech
The Packers will be targeting a tight end in Rounds 2-4, and Jace Amaro makes a lot of sense. Amaro may not be available at this juncture – it will be tough for him to get by the Jets – so Green Bay may trade up, just like it did for Jerel Worthy in the second round two years ago.

Pick change; previously Weston Richburg, C

  22. Philadelphia Eagles: Martavis Bryant, WR, Clemson
As mentioned in Round 1, the Eagles want a big, fast receiver. Martavis Bryant is raw, but he fits that description. He can be groomed to start across from Riley Cooper in 2015 and beyond.

  23. Cincinnati Bengals: Cameron Fleming, OT, Stanford
The Bengals lost Anthony Collins in free agency, so they’ll have to look elsewhere for a long-term solution at left tackle.

Pick change; previously Marcus Martin, C

  24. San Francisco 49ers: Keith McGill, CB, Utah
San Francisco’s group of cornerbacks isn’t very strong, as Carlos Rogers and Tarell Brown have both moved on to new teams. The 49ers are weak at this position, so they could easily spend two early selections on upgrades in the 2014 NFL Draft.

  25. San Diego Chargers: Jeremiah Attaochu, DE/OLB, Georgia Tech
The Chargers have shown a lot of interest in Jeremiah Attaochu, who could help their pass-rushing woes; they need an upgrade across from Melvin Ingram.

  26. New Orleans Saints: Carl Bradford, LB, Arizona State
Carl Bradford would be a nice piece for New Orleans’ defense. The Saints could use depth – and future starters – at both rush linebacker and inside linebacker, and Bradford can play both positions.

Pick change; previously Davante Adams, WR

  27. Indianapolis Colts: Gabe Jackson, G, Mississippi State
The Colts’ top priority has to be protecting Andrew Luck, so they’re expected to use one of their second-day choices on a lineman.

Pick change; previously David Yankey, G/OT

  28. Carolina Panthers: Davante Adams, WR, Fresno State
The Panthers obviously could double up – or even triple up – on receivers during the early stages of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Pick change; previously Cyrus Kouandjio, OT

  29. San Francisco 49ers: Kareem Martin, DE, North Carolina
The 49ers have Tank Carradine waiting in the wings, but with four second-day picks, they can afford to go with the best player available who fits their scheme perfectly.

  30. New England Patriots: Weston Richburg, C, Colorado State
Ryan Wendell was re-signed, but an upgrade at center is still needed. He was most responsible for Tom Brady’s poor pass protection.

Pick change; previously Bishop Sankey, RB

  31. Denver Broncos: Marcus Martin, C, USC
The Broncos have shown interest in bringing a center, which is understandable. They could add an upgrade over Manny Ramirez and slide him out to guard.

Pick change; previously Trent Murphy, DE/OLB

  32. Seattle Seahawks: Marcus Smith, DE/OLB, Louisville
The Seahawks lost Chris Clemons to the Jaguars and may see Cliff Avril walk next spring. They need a new LEO. Marcus Smith perfectly fits what Seattle looks for in its draft prospects.
