2014 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2

Last update: Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014. Major changes in all 4 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

The order of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft is based on my NFL Power Rankings.

*** This 2014 NFL Mock Draft (4 rounds) was updated Feb. 19. This mock draft will be updated at least once per week (Tuesday afternoons and other times for important events.). Check out old versions of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft in the archived mock draft section. Follow @walterfootball for updates. ***

  1. Houston Texans: Antonio Richardson, OT, Tennessee
As mentioned earlier, teams that spend early picks on quarterbacks often double up on offense. If the Texans decide to do that, they could certainly upgrade the right tackle position, which is a big problem area for them.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

  2. Washington Redskins: Brandin Cooks, WR, Oregon State
The Redskins must improve their defense, but they also have to focus on upgrading the receiver position. A No. 2 wideout is needed. By the way, check out our NFL Draft Team Rumors for a report about the Redskins wanting to move into the first round.

Pick change; previously Allen Robinson, WR

  3. Cleveland Browns: Carlos Hyde, RB, Ohio State
The Browns planned on courting Ben Tate in free agency, but that was when Michael Lombardi was in charge. As for now, Carlos Hyde is the type of running back Cleveland is looking for per our NFL Draft Team Rumors page.

  4. Oakland Raiders: David Yankey, G/OT, Stanford
The Raiders need multiple upgrades on their offensive line. Lucas Nix might be the worst starting guard in the NFL, so he needs to be replaced.

Pick change; previously Scott Crichton, DE

  5. Atlanta Falcons: Xavier Su’a-Filo, G, UCLA
The Falcons have some major issues on the offensive line. Everyone wants to look at left tackle, but the guard position is an area that must be upgraded as well.

  6. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Ryan Shazier, LB, Ohio State
New defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier discussed the middle linebacker position as a need for the Buccaneers. Ryan Shazier would be a nice fit.

  7. Jacksonville Jaguars: Ka’Deem Carey, RB, Arizona
Maurice Jones-Drew is an impending free agent (go here to check out my 2014 NFL Free Agent Rankings). He’ll likely want to leave such a terrible situation, so the Jaguars will need to find a new running back.

  8. Minnesota Vikings: Derek Carr, QB, Fresno State
I know I’ve had Derek Carr at No. 8 in my previous updates, but I’ve discussed him being a reach at this juncture. He has great value here, so the Vikings certainly wouldn’t hesitate to pull the trigger on him in Round 2 unless they really dislike him. That doesn’t appear to be the case, as the Vikings met with Carr extensively during the Senior Bowl.

  9. Buffalo Bills: Allen Robinson, WR, Penn State
This offseason has to be all about building around E.J. Manuel. Buffalo already upgraded its offensive line; now it has to find a potent weapon for the second-year quarterback. Stevie Johnson won’t be around much longer, so a new receiver is needed.

Pick change; previously Brandin Cooks, WR

  10. Tennessee Titans: Marcus Roberson, CB, Florida
The Titans are certain to lose Alterraun Verner in free agency next month, so they could be interested in taking a cornerback during the early rounds if one happens to be the best player available.

Pick change; previously Dee Ford, DE/OLB

  11. New York Giants: Scott Crichton, DE, Oregon State
New York could double dip on the defensive line. Justin Tuck is a free agent, so the Giants will need another pass-rusher if he moves on.

Pick change; previously Morgan Moses, OT

  12. St. Louis Rams: Dion Bailey, S, USC
St. Louis’ defense came on late in the season, but it struggled at times during the year for a couple of reasons. One was the play of safety Rodney McLeod. He wasn’t terrible, but it’s clear that the Rams need to find an upgrade next to T.J. McDonald.

  13. Detroit Lions: Lamarcus Joyner, S, Florida State
The Lions cut Louis Delmas recently. If they can’t find a safety in free agency, they’ll have to use an early selection on one because they have nothing at the position.

Pick change; previously Bradley Roby, CB

  14. Pittsburgh Steelers: Loucheiz Purifoy, CB, Florida
The Steelers have to address the cornerback position. Ike Taylor was dreadful this past year, as the receivers he battled – save for A.J. Green, oddly enough – posted season-high totals against him.

Pick change; previously Marcus Roberson, CB

  15. Dallas Cowboys: Jimmie Ward, S, Northern Illinois
Dallas had horrible safety play all year. An upgrade in this area would have allowed it to beat Philadelphia in Week 17.

Pick change; previously Lamarcus Joyner, S

  16. Baltimore Ravens: Jordan Matthews, WR, Vanderbilt
It should be quite apparent that the Ravens desperately need help at receiver. Neither Jacoby Jones nor Marlon Brown should be a No. 2 wideout in the NFL. Think Joe Flacco misses Anquan Boldin?

  17. New York Jets: Kyle Van Noy, DE/OLB, BYU
The Jets have a great interior pass rush, but they need to become more potent on the outside. I mocked Kyle Van Noy to the Jets in the first round during the season, so he has to be considered a steal at this juncture.

  18. Miami Dolphins: Tre Mason, RB, Auburn
The Dolphins don’t trust Lamar Miller at all, while Daniel Thomas isn’t very good. They’ll likely be searching for a new starting running back this spring.

  19. Chicago Bears: Ed Reynolds, S, Stanford
Chicago has a huge void at the safety position; Major Wright is a free agent, while Chris Conte’s ineptitude was quite apparent in the win-and-in season finale versus the Packers.

Pick change; previously Loucheiz Purifoy, CB

  20. Arizona Cardinals: Jeremiah Attaochu, DE/OLB, Georgia Tech
The Cardinals, who typically go with the top player on their board, will almost definitely be interested in someone like Jeremiah Attaochu, as they really need an upgrade at outside linebacker across from Sam Acho. John Abraham, 36 in May, won’t be effective much longer.

  21. Green Bay Packers: Trent Murphy, DE/OLB, Stanford
The Packers need pass-rushing depth in the event that Clay Matthews gets hurt again. As Charlie Campbell reported, the Packers are very interested in Trent Murphy.

  22. Philadelphia Eagles: Carl Bradford, DE/OLB, Arizona State
The only linebacker who consistently put pressure on the quarterback was Trent Cole, and he won’t last beyond next year because he’s due $10 million in 2015. Another pass-rusher is currently needed anyway.

Pick change; previously Ed Reynolds, S

  23. Cincinnati Bengals: Bradley Roby, CB, Ohio State
Mike Zimmer did a great job of getting the most out of Terence Newman and Pacman Jones, but he’s moved on to be the head coach in Minnesota. The Bengals will have to compensate with some new corners.

Bradley Roby is slotted pretty low in this mock because he played poorly this previous season. He’s also had some off-the-field issues. I think the Bengals would take a chance on him though.

Pick change; previously Jack Mewhort, OT

  24. San Francisco 49ers: Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE, Washington
Jim Harbaugh loves to run multiple-tight end formations. He missed Delanie Walker this past season, so I could see San Francisco using one of its many second-day selections on a replacement.

Pick change; previously Craig Loston, S

  25. San Diego Chargers: Bashaud Breeland, CB, Clemson
The Chargers’ defense made every single quarterback look like a Pro Bowler early in the year. They have a dreadful cornerback situation, which could be remedied with the use of an early-round pick in May’s draft.

Pick change; previously Gabe Jackson, G

  26. New Orleans Saints: Stanley Jean-Baptiste, CB, Nebraska
The Saints have some issues at cornerback with Jabari Greer’s status being uncertain. Greer, who tore his ACL in November, is due $4.4 million next season as a 32-year-old.

  27. Indianapolis Colts: Chris Borland, ILB, Wisconsin
The Colts need help all over their defense, including the linebacking corps, where the injury-prone Pat Angerer will be a free agent this March.

  28. Carolina Panthers: Davante Adams, WR, Fresno State
Steve Smith is slowing down, while Brandon LaFell hasn’t proven that he can be a consistent starter. Oh, and Ted Ginn, who hates me, happens to be a free agent. The Panthers need to bolster their receiving corps.

Pick change; previously Jarvis Landry, WR

  29. San Francisco 49ers: Jarvis Landry, WR, LSU
Anquan Boldin and Mario Manningham will both be free agents next March. The 49ers will need a new receiver to complement Michael Crabtree. Even if Boldin is retained, a third wideout is needed.

Pick change; previously Davante Adams, WR

  30. New England Patriots: Marcus Martin, C, USC
Ryan Wendell, an impending free agent, has been most responsible for Tom Brady’s poor pass protection.

Pick change; previously Travis Swanson, C

  31. Denver Broncos: Kyle Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech
You have to wonder what the Broncos plan on doing at cornerback in 2014 and beyond. Champ Bailey and Quentin Jammer will be 36 and 35, respectively, in June. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, meanwhile, will be a free agent in March.

  32. Seattle Seahawks: Paul Richardson, WR, Colorado
Golden Tate and Doug Baldwin are both impending free agents, but the Seahawks can do better at receiver anyway. I’m sure Cris Carter would agree.
