2013 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2

Last update: Wednesday, March 20, 2013. Major changes in all 5 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

You can find the complete seven-round 2013 NFL Draft Order by clicking the link.

  1. Jacksonville Jaguars: Johnthan Banks, CB, Mississippi State
Derek Cox signed with the Broncos. Aaron Ross signed with the Giants. Rashean Mathis and William Middleton are gone. That leaves two guys named Mike Harris and Alan Ball as the starting cornerbacks. That’s not good.

Johnthan Banks had an awful Combine, but he fits perfectly into Gus Bradley’s system as a tall, lanky corner.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

  2. San Francisco 49ers: Jonathan Cyprien, S, Florida International
Despite making the Pro Bowl, Donte Whitner hasn’t been very good this year (he surrendered more touchdowns than any safety). Dashon Goldson, meanwhile, was slapped with a franchise tag this prior offseason. The 49ers, who might want to upgrade the secondary after Joe Flacco torched them in the Super Bowl, will need a replacement if they can’t sign him to a long-term deal.

Jonathan Cyprien made this big leap recently. There’s so much buzz about him recently, and there are multiple reports indicating that several teams have him ranked as the No. 2 safety in this class.

  3. Philadelphia Eagles: Menelik Watson, OT, Florida State
Teams that draft quarterbacks early usually use their next selection on an offensive complement. Think of Sam Bradford and Rodger Saffold, Matthew Stafford and Brandon Pettigrew, Andrew Luck and Coby Fleener, and so on.

The Eagles have to bolster the offensive line. Adding a tackle is key because Jason Peters may not be the same player coming off a torn Achilles. Even if he is, adding a right tackle and moving Todd Herremans inside makes a ton of sense.

Pick change; previously E.J. Manuel, QB

  4. Detroit Lions: DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Clemson
The Lions have brought in Cordarrelle Patterson and Justin Hunter for private interviews lately (check the NFL Draft Prospect Meetings list for more). Both are off the board, but another talented wideout would help across from Calvin Johnson.

  5. Cincinnati Bengals: Matt Elam, S, Florida
The Bengals had a big need at safety last spring, but they didn’t address the position until the fifth round of the 2012 NFL Draft. They’ll put more effort into finding an upgrade the following offseason because they won’t survive with Reggie Nelson and the benched Taylor Mays (or cornerback Nate Clements, an impending free agent who was playing out of position) as their starters.

Pick change; previously Giovani Bernard, RB

  6. Arizona Cardinals: Matt Barkley, QB, USC
I don’t think Matt Barkley makes any sense for Arizona’s offensive scheme, but he’s been linked to the Cardinals enough that I’m going to mock him to them in the second round.

I doubt Barkley will last this long, but Arizona could easily move into the 25-35 range to obtain him.

Pick change; previously Matt Barkley, QB

  7. New York Jets: Ryan Nassib, QB, Syracuse
The Jets need to take a chance on a young quarterback because Mark Sanchez is awful. They have to give their fans some hope, or they may lose more supporters than just Fireman Ed. They’ve shown lots of interest in Ryan Nassib.

  8. Tennessee Titans: Darius Slay, CB, Mississippi State
The Titans were interested in drafting a highly ranked cornerback at No. 20 back in April, but neither Stephon Gilmore nor Dre Kirkpatrick fell to them. Maybe they’ll have more luck in the 2013 NFL Draft, but if not, they could definitely take a corner in the second round. Alterraun Verner will be entering his contract year in 2013, so Tennessee will need a new starter if it can’t retain him. Besides, the Titans need to fix their 24th-ranked pass defense.

  9. Buffalo Bills: E.J. Manuel, QB, Florida State
General manager Buddy Nix told the media that he would probably trade up for a quarterback this April. Maybe this is what he meant.

As with Matt Barkley, I do not expect E.J. Manuel to be around this long. In fact, he was invited to the 2013 NFL Draft, so he could be traded up for in the early 20s.

Pick change; previously Matt Barkley, QB

  10. Miami Dolphins: Justin Pugh, G/OT, Syracuse
Justin Pugh has dinosaur arms, so he might be forced into playing guard. That’s fine for the Dolphins because they need help at both right tackle (in the wake of the Jake Long departure) and right guard. The NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah recently stated that he believes Pugh will go late in the first round, so this is a steal for Miami.

Pick change; previously Terron Armstead, OT

  11. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Zach Ertz, TE, Stanford
Charlie Campbell (@DraftCampbell) has informed me that the Buccaneers will be targeting a tight end early in the 2013 NFL Draft. Dallas Clark is a worn-down free agent, while Luke Stocker has been a disappointment thus far. Josh Freeman needs a consistent intermediate target.

Pick change; previously Jamar Taylor, CB

  12. Carolina Panthers: Jamar Taylor, CB, Boise State
Here’s some much-needed secondary help. Chris Gamble was cut recently, so the Panthers have to find a new top cornerback, especially considering the receivers they have to deal with in the division.

Pick change; previously Blidi Wreh-Wilson, CB

  13. San Diego Chargers: Larry Warford, G, Kentucky
More offensive line help for Philip Rivers. The Chargers’ top three guards were all free agents, and all they did was add former Bill Chad Rinehart. Another starter is needed.

  14. St. Louis Rams: Kawann Short, DT, Purdue
With tons of picks and not too many needs, the Rams can go with the best player available. That could be Kawann Short, who would address the lack of depth the team has at defensive tackle. Starter Kendall Langford, who disappointed a bit last year, is due $16 million over the next three years, so he may not be around much longer.

Pick change; previously Zach Ertz, TE

  15. Dallas Cowboys: Bennie Logan, DT, LSU
The Cowboys need personnel for Monte Kiffin’s 4-3 defense. It appears as though Jay Ratliff will be on the roster next year, which is a huge mistake typical of the post-Bill Parcells Jerry Jones era. Defensive tackle still needs to be addressed though.

  16. Pittsburgh Steelers: Kevin Minter, ILB, LSU
The Steelers, as they always do, catch a falling prospect. Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette recently reported that the Steelers could be targeting an inside linebacker early in the 2013 NFL Draft. Kevin Minter may go at the end of the first round, so he’s a steal at this juncture.

Pick change; previously Manti Te’o, ILB

  17. New York Giants: Terron Armstead, OT, Arkansas-Pine Bluff
Will Beatty re-signed with the Giants earlier this offseason, but the right tackle position is still a mess. David Diehl was retained, but he’s a human turnstile. With Anthony Spencer and Brandon Graham squaring off against New York twice per year, this is an area that desperately needs to be addressed to keep Eli Manning from getting too banged up as he advances into his 30s.

Pick change; previously Khaseem Greene, LB

  18. Chicago Bears: Stedman Bailey, WR, West Virginia
The Bears have revealed that they will be searching for a speed element to their passing game this offseason. If that’s the case, they may consider Stedman Bailey at this juncture. Chicago cannot have Devin Hester on the field as a receiver any longer.

  19. Washington Redskins: Blidi Wreh-Wilson, CB, Connecticut
A Redskin fan recently asked me to mock three cornerbacks to his team. I can’t blame him for that request, given that the team’s starting corners are Josh Wilson and Richard Crawford.

Pick change; previously Matt Elam, S

  20. Minnesota Vikings: Manti Te’o, LB, Notre Dame
Manti Te’o had a miserable Combine. He ran a 4.82 40 and later blamed it on fatigue (as if the other players weren’t tired). He looked stiff in the drills. Worst of all, he drew that ridiculous press conference. Te’o handled himself well in front of the media, but the press conference itself was the major problem. No team wants to deal with the media circus that will come with acquiring Te’o.

The Vikings have done a ton of research on Te’o during this pre-draft process, so perhaps they’re planning to take him if he’s available in Round 2. He’d fill a big need at middle linebacker.

Pick change; previously Kawann Short, DT

  21. Cincinnati Bengals: Johnathan Franklin, RB, UCLA
BenJarvus Green-Ellis rushed for 100-plus yards in four of the five games prior to Pittsburgh, but that’s mostly just great blocking rather than the Law Firm improving. One of the Bengals’ top priorities is finding a capable running back. Johnathan Franklin, who is getting a ton of positive buzz right now, would complement Green-Ellis very well.

Pick change; previously Eric Reid, S

  22. Miami Dolphins: Alex Okafor, DE/OLB, Texas
Cameron Wake is the only player on this roster who consistently gets pressure on the quarterback, and that simply can’t be the case if you’re trying to unseat Tom Brady and the Patriots in the AFC East.

  23. Green Bay Packers: Eddie Lacy, RB, Alabama
James Starks has yet to prove that he can stay healthy, while Alex Green has shown nothing in several starts. Cedric Benson is obviously not a long-term answer, though I’ve been impressed with DuJuan Harris in his limited action. Still, the Packers may address the running back position early in the 2013 NFL Draft.

I had Eddie Lacy in the first round of my mock draft a couple of weeks ago, but I’ve dropped him because he can’t work out because of an injury. He won’t fall too far, but he’s unlikely to be chosen on Thursday night unless he can run for teams.

  24. Seattle Seahawks: Kyle Long, OT/G, Oregon
The Seahawks don’t have too many needs now, but they could stand to upgrade the right side of their offensive line. Guard Paul McQuistan is pretty mediocre, while tackle Breno Giacomini is a liability in pass protection. Kyle Long could improve one of those spots.

Pick change; previously Margus Hunt, DE/DT

  25. Houston Texans: Jordan Reed, TE, Florida
The Texans love utilizing multiple tight ends. They’ll be looking for another one this offseason in the wake of losing James Casey to the Eagles.

Pick change; previously Kevin Minter, ILB

  26. Denver Broncos: John Jenkins, NT, Georgia
The Broncos signed Terrance Knighton, but that doesn’t mean they won’t add another interior lineman. Jack Del Rio loves having multiple massive defensive tackles. Think back to his days in Jacksonville with Marcus Stroud and John Henderson.

Pick change; previously Kevin Minter, ILB

  27. New England Patriots: David Amerson, S/CB, N.C. State
Aqib Talib re-signed and Adrian Wilson was added, but neither might be around come 2014; Talib inked a 1-year deal, while Wilson will be 34 in October. The Patriots are always looking for secondary depth, and Bill Belichick seems to love these corner-safety hybrids.

  28. Atlanta Falcons: Margus Hunt, DE, SMU
The overpaid Ray Edwards was cut during the season. John Abraham was also released recently. Defensive end will be a priority early in the 2013 NFL Draft, and the Falcons may even double dip at the position in the first few rounds.

Pick change; previously Dallas Thomas, G/OT

  29. San Francisco 49ers: Jamie Collins, DE/OLB, Southern Miss
The 49ers will probably plan to do something about their serious lack of depth at rush linebacker this offseason. Jamie Collins had an awesome Combine and is generating a ton of buzz, which is why I moved him into the second round.

Pick change; previously Robert Woods, WR

  30. Baltimore Ravens: D.J. Swearinger, S, South Carolina
Ed Reed has been flirting with the Texans. If he signs in Houston, the Ravens will have two massive holes at safety, as Bernard Pollard was cut recently. Baltimore has to address this position early in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Pick change; previously Jesse Williams, NT
