2013 NFL Mock Draft: Round 3

Last update: Wednesday, March 6, 2013. Major changes in all 5 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

You can find the complete seven-round 2013 NFL Draft Order by clicking the link.

  1. Kansas City Chiefs: Markus Wheaton, WR, Oregon State
The Chiefs re-signed Dwayne Bowe, but they still need a No. 2 wideout, as Jonathan Baldwin, who is part of the old regime, has shown nothing thus far.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

  2. Jacksonville Jaguars: Khaseem Greene, LB, Rutgers
With Daryl Smith gone, the Jaguars don’t really have anything at outside linebacker. Khaseem Greene, who could easily be taken off the board in the middle of Round 2, would fix that.

Pick change; previously Terron Armstead, OT

  3. Detroit Lions: Cornelius Washington, DE, Georgia
The Lions need defensive end help with Kyle Vanden Bosch getting cut and Cliff Avril entering free agency. Cornelius Washington, who blew up the Combine, would be a great fit in Detroit’s wide-9 formation.

Pick change; previously Sam Montgomery, DE

  4. Oakland Raiders: Marc Anthony, CB, California
The Raiders were without their two starting cornerbacks most of this season. Ronald Bartell was released, while Shawntae Spencer just isn’t very good.

Pick change; previously Sam Montgomery, DE

  5. Philadelphia Eagles: Robert Alford, CB, Southeastern Louisiana
Brandon Boykin was a nice pick in the fourth round, but he won’t be enough if Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie leaves via free agency, as Philadelphia wants three high-level cornerbacks. Nnamdi Asomugha will probably be cut this spring. He was absolutely terrible.

  6. Cleveland Browns: Tyler Bray, QB, Tennessee
New regimes mean new quarterbacks, so unless Michael Lombardi trades for Ryan Mallett, he could spend an early selection on a developmental signal-caller.

Pick change; previously Tyler Wilson, QB

  7. Arizona Cardinals: Sio Moore, OLB, Connecticut
Sio Moore, who provides great value here in Round 3, could bolster an inconsistent pass rush and displace the injury-prone O’Brien Schofield.

Pick change; previously J.J. Wilcox, S

  8. Tennessee Titans: Jordan Reed, TE, Florida
Jared Cook wasn’t franchised, which means the Titans have a pretty big hole at the tight end position.

Pick change; previously Barrett Jones, G/C/OT

  9. Buffalo Bills: Vance McDonald, TE, Rice
General manager Buddy Nix recently told the media that he plans on upgrading the tight end position. Expect one of his Day 2 selections to be used on this.

Pick change; previously Jordan Reed, TE

  10. New York Jets: Ryan Nassib, QB, Syracuse
The Jets need to take a chance on a young quarterback because Mark Sanchez is awful. They have to give their fans some hope, or they may lose more supporters than just Fireman Ed.

Pick change; previously Gavin Escobar, TE

  11. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Sam Montgomery, DE, LSU
No one should be surprised if Sam Montgomery falls to the third round or later. His comments about quitting and betting on football have drawn some serious red flags. However, he’s the best player available and fills a big need for Tampa Bay.

Michael Bennett is a free agent, while Da’Quan Bowers was arrested for bringing a gun to an airport, so the Buccaneers could be targeting a defensive end early in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Pick change; previously Tharold Simon, CB

  12. San Francisco 49ers: Jamie Collins, DE/OLB, Southern Miss
The 49ers will probably plan to do something about their serious lack of depth at rush linebacker this offseason. Jamie Collins had an awesome Combine and is generating a ton of buzz, so I could eventually move him into the second round.

Pick change; previously Robert Woods, WR

  13. New Orleans Saints: Eric Reid, S, LSU
The Saints are desperate for help in the secondary and are expected to take a defensive back early. Local product Eric Reid is one of the top prospects available.

Pick change; previously Brandon Williams, NT

  14. San Diego Chargers: Travis Frederick, G/C, Wisconsin
More offensive line help for Philip Rivers. The Chargers’ top three guards are all free agents. At least one replacement will be needed.

  15. Miami Dolphins: Stedman Bailey, WR, West Virginia
Brian Hartline didn’t do very much after posting 200-plus yards at Arizona, so it’s clear that he’s not a No. 1. The Dolphins need a top option for the inconsistent Ryan Tannehill.

  16. St. Louis Rams: D.J. Swearinger, S, South Carolina
The Rams’ defense was great this past season, but they have a couple of areas they need to address. One such spot is the safety position. Craig Dahl must be upgraded.

Pick change; previously David Bakhtiari, OT

  17. Pittsburgh Steelers: Aaron Dobson, WR, Marshall
The Steelers never shy away from a play-maker if one provides good value. That’s the case with Aaron Dobson. The butterfingered Mike Wallace could be gone this offseason.

Pick change; previously Quinton Patton, WR

  18. Dallas Cowboys: Barrett Jones, G/C/OT, Alabama
The interior of Dallas’ offensive line is an abomination. The front office found two downgrades at guard last offseason. Hopefully it finds better players this time around.

Pick change; previously Brennan Williams, OT

  19. New York Giants: Kiko Alonso, ILB, Oregon
The Giants have issues in the middle of their defense. Chase Blackburn shouldn’t be starting, while Keith Rivers, a free agent in March, can never get healthy. General manager Jerry Reese said that there needs to be better linebacker play next year.

Pick change; previously Khaseem Greene, LB

  20. Miami Dolphins: Justin Pugh, G/OT, Syracuse
Justin Pugh has dinosaur arms, so he might be forced into playing guard. That’s fine for the Dolphins because they need help at both right tackle (if Jake Long leaves) and right guard.

  21. Minnesota Vikings: J.J. Wilcox, S, Georgia Southern
As noted in my Minnesota Vikings NFL Offseason Needs, Harrison Smith deserves Rookie of the Year consideration, but he’s the only talented safety on Minnesota’s roster.

Pick change; previously Bacarri Rambo, S

  22. Cincinnati Bengals: Jelani Jenkins, OLB, Florida
The Bengals have major issues at linebacker. Manny Lawson is a free agent, while Rey Maualuga was one of the worst defensive starters in the NFL last year.

  23. Washington Redskins: Ryan Swope, WR, Texas A&M
The Redskins have to fix their secondary and offensive line, but something else they should do is find some help at receiver. I think they’ll do that if they get good value. That’s definitely the case in this scenario.

Pick change; previously Aaron Dobson, WR

  24. Indianapolis Colts: Corey Lemonier, DE/OLB, Auburn
Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis won’t be around much longer. The Colts need to find new players who can rush the passer.

Pick change; previously Corey Lemonier, DE/OLB

  25. Seattle Seahawks: Everett Dawkins, DT, Florida State
Perhaps Seattle’s greatest priority this offseason is finding an interior pass-rushing presence. Having something like that would make the already-awesome secondary much more potent.

Pick change; previously Zaviar Gooden, OLB

  26. Green Bay Packers: Knile Davis, RB, Arkansas
James Starks has yet to prove that he can stay healthy, while Alex Green has shown nothing in several starts. Cedric Benson is obviously not a long-term answer, though I’ve been impressed with DuJuan Harris in his limited action. Still, the Packers may address the running back position early in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Knile Davis was awesome at the Combine. There are some who believe that Davis would be the No. 1 running back in this class if it weren’t for his injury history.

Pick change; previously David Queseenberry, G/C/OT

  27. Houston Texans: Cobi Hamilton, WR, Arkansas
The Texans have needed a No. 2 receiver for years, but now that Andre Johnson is into his 30s, it won’t be long before they have to secure a new No. 1 wideout for Matt Schaub.

  28. Denver Broncos: Montee Ball, RB, Wisconsin
John Fox is not shy about using early selections on running backs. He needs one. Willis McGahee is old, Knowshon Moreno can’t be trusted, and Ronnie Hillman’s just a chance-of-pace back.

Pick change; previously Everett Dawkins, DT

  29. New England Patriots: Mike Glennon, QB, N.C. State
The Patriots have used a third-round pick on a troubled but talented SEC quarterback before, so how about a third-round pick on a high-upside but raw ACC product? There’s talk that Bill Belichick could trade Ryan Mallett to Michael Lombardi, so if that happens, New England may search for another project at the signal-caller position.

  30. Atlanta Falcons: Zaviar Gooden, OLB, Missouri
As noted in my Atlanta Falcons Offseason Needs page, the Falcons’ play at linebacker must improve. Stephen Nicholas can’t be on the field on all three downs, while Akeem Dent was a disappointment in his first season as a starter. The team needs to find a linebacker capable of playing all three downs with Sean Weatherspoon.

Pick change; previously Knile Davis, RB

  31. San Francisco 49ers: Tharold Simon, CB, LSU
Teams are always looking for cornerback depth, especially if they have extra picks. Besides, Carlos Rogers didn’t play as well this past season. He was solid at times, but was inconsistent.

Pick change; previously Logan Ryan, CB

  32. Baltimore Ravens: Da’Rick Rogers, WR, Tennessee Tech
The Ravens take chances on players like Da’Rick Rogers. If Rogers stays out of trouble, he could be a solid weapon for Joe Flacco. The expensive Anquan Boldin will be entering his contract year and will have to be replaced soon.
