2013 NFL Mock Draft: Round 3

Last update: Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013. Changes in all 4 rounds for Taylor Lewan going back to school.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

You can find the complete seven-round 2013 NFL Draft Order by clicking the link.

  1. Kansas City Chiefs: Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington
As written in my Kansas City Chiefs Team Needs page, “Javier Arenas has played well since Stanford Routt was unceremoniously released. He could stick as the starter across from Brandon Flowers, but the Chiefs will still need to find some depth.”

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

  2. Jacksonville Jaguars: Gabe Jackson, G, Mississippi State
Eben Britton was benched this past season, and replacement Mike Brewster wasn’t much better. A mid-round pick should be used on interior line help.

Pick change; previously Larry Warford, G

  3. Detroit Lions: Blidi Wreh-Wilson, CB, Connecticut
Taken from my Detroit Lions Team Needs page, “It wouldn’t be an offseason if the Lions didn’t need a cornerback. Chris Houston is a free agent, while Dwight “Bullet Bill” Bentley did not look good in three starts – even for a third-round rookie.”

Pick change; previously Khaseem Greene, LB

  4. Oakland Raiders: Kyle Long, OT, Oregon
The Raiders will need to upgrade their offensive line. Khalif Barnes cannot be a starter in this league. Kyle Long would appeal to Oakland fans for obvious reasons.

  5. Philadelphia Eagles: Carrington Byndom, CB, Texas
Brandon Boykin was a nice pick in the fourth round, but he won’t be enough if Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie leaves via free agency, as Philadelphia wants three high-level cornerbacks. Nnamdi Asomugha will be cut as soon as the season is over. He’s been absolutely terrible.

Pick change; previously Blidi Wreh-Wilson, CB

  6. Cleveland Browns: Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma
The Browns have a new front office, so they’ll want to draft a quarterback in the middle rounds if Colt McCoy is traded.

  7. Arizona Cardinals: Chris Faulk, OT, LSU
It doesn’t matter who the quarterback is; if the Cardinals can’t pass protect, that signal-caller will struggle.

Pick change; previously Corey Lemonier, DE/OLB

  8. Tennessee Titans: Travis Frederick, G/C, Wisconsin
Chris Johnson has finally regained CJ2K form in recent weeks, but that doesn’t mean the Titans can’t use an upgrade or two on the offensive line. Help is needed on the interior, and Travis Frederick can play multiple positions up front.

  9. Buffalo Bills: Tank Carradine, DE, Florida State
The Bills spent tons of money on Mario Williams and Mark Anderson this offseason, but while the former has picked up his play lately, the latter has been dreadful whenever he’s been on the field. Buffalo needs to put as much pressure on the quarterback if it wants to unseat the Patriots in the division.

  10. New York Jets: Andre Ellington, RB, Clemson
The Jets need to give their next quarterback some weapons to work with. Both the receiver and tight end positions need to be upgraded. Running back must be addressed as well. Shonn Greene’s a free agent, but he wasn’t very good anyway.

Pick change; previously Da’Rick Rogers, WR

  11. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Will Davis, CB, Utah State
The Buccaneers don’t ever shy away from doubling up on positions. They may do so at cornerback, as this was a huge area of need even before the Aqib Talib trade.

Pick change; previously Brennan Williams, OT

  12. San Francisco 49ers: Corey Lemonier, DE/OLB, Auburn
The 49ers have a fantastic defense, but they have a serious lack of depth at rush linebacker. With so few needs, they can afford to take the best player available to address that problem.

Pick change; previously Chase Thomas, DE/OLB

  13. New Orleans Saints: Justin Pugh, OT, Syracuse
The Saints will need an offensive tackle next spring if they can’t re-sign free agent-to-be Jermon Bushrod. Bushrod isn’t that good to begin with, so New Orleans could stand to find an upgrade.

Pick change; previously John Simon, DE

  14. San Diego Chargers: Tyler Bray, QB, Tennessee
Philip Rivers will be a free agent after the 2014 season. Will the Chargers re-sign him to a long-term deal if he continues to choke in the clutch and show signs of regression? They should probably bring in a young quarterback as insurance.

  15. Miami Dolphins: Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State
The Dolphins have an extra Day 2 pick because they dealt Vontae Davis to the Colts, so they should probably use one of them on a replacement.

  16. St. Louis Rams: Da’Rick Rogers, WR, Tennessee Tech
The Rams should think about bringing in some competition for Brian Quick, who didn’t show very much promise in his rookie campaign.

Pick change; previously Kenny Stills, WR

  17. Pittsburgh Steelers: Cobi Hamilton, WR, Arkansas
The Steelers never shy away from a play-maker if one provides good value. The butterfingered Mike Wallace could be gone after this season.

Pick change; previously Ryan Swope, WR

  18. Dallas Cowboys: Alvin Bailey, G, Arkansas
The interior of Dallas’ offensive line is an abomination. The front office found two downgrades at guard last offseason. Hopefully it finds better players this time around.

Pick change; previously E.J. Manuel, QB

  19. New York Giants: Everett Dawkins, DT, Florida State
Marvin Austin has shown nothing thus far in his career, so the Giants may bring in another young defensive tackle with Rocky Bernard set to hit free agency.

Pick change; previously Arthur Brown, LB

  20. Miami Dolphins: Arthur Brown, LB, Kansas State
Something the Dolphins must do this offseason is find some linebacker depth because they’re awfully thin there.

Pick change; previously Gerald Hodges, LB

  21. Minnesota Vikings: Jon Bostic, ILB, Florida
Jasper Brinkley needs to be upgraded, so the Vikings will be looking for middle linebacker help at some point this offseason. Manti Te’o and Kevin Minter are strong possibilities in Round 1. If Minnesota takes someone else, a prospect like Jon Bostic would make sense at this juncture.

Pick change; previously Alvin Bailey, G

  22. Cincinnati Bengals: Chase Thomas, DE/OLB, Stanford
The Bengals have to make some changes in their linebacking corps, one of which is at strongside linebacker. Manny Lawson is a free agent, so here’s a replacement if he leaves.

Pick change; previously Chase Thomas, DE/OLB

  23. Washington Redskins: Bacarri Rambo, S, Georgia
More help for the Redskins’ secondary. Brandon Meriweather cannot be relied upon to stay healthy, and it’s not like he was a Pro Bowl talent anyway.

  24. Indianapolis Colts: Brandon Jenkins, DE/OLB, Florida State
Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis won’t be around much longer. The Colts need to find new players who can rush the passer.

Pick change; previously Chase Thomas, DE/OLB

  25. Baltimore Ravens: Tyrann Mathieu, CB, LSU
The Ravens suddenly have glaring issues at cornerback. Lardarius Webb tore an ACL for the second time in his career, while Cary Williams is a free agent.

It appears as though Tyrann Mathieu will enter the 2013 NFL Draft. The Ravens have taken a chance on another troubled cornerback.

  26. Seattle Seahawks: Sean Porter, DE/OLB, Texas A&M
Chris Clemons tore his ACL. He’ll be 32 in October, and he’s due $13.5 million over the next two years. Here’s some insurance just in case he doesn’t recover fully.

Pick change; previously Brennan Williams, OT

  27. Green Bay Packers: Markus Wheaton, WR, Oregon State
Greg Jennings will be a free agent in March. He’s proven to be unreliable in terms of staying healthy, so the Packers may choose not to re-sign him. If so, they may target a receiver early in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Pick change; previously Jordan Reed, TE

  28. Houston Texans: Montee Ball, RB, Wisconsin
This doesn’t fill any sort of current need, but Ben Tate will be a free agent after next season, so the Texans may want to trade him because they can’t exactly pay top dollar to two running backs.

Pick change; previously Andre Ellington, RB

  29. San Francisco 49ers: Ryan Swope, WR, Texas A&M
Mario Manningham could be released in the coming months. He’s owed close to $4 million in non-guaranteed money, and he’s coming off a torn ACL and PCL that he suffered in late December.

Pick change; previously Zac Dysert, QB

  30. New England Patriots: William Gholston, DE/DT, Michigan State
Chandler Jones has had a monstrous rookie campaign thus far, but the Patriots need someone across from him to get to the quarterback, as Jermaine Cunningham has been a disappointment. Undrafted free agent Justin Francis broke out in the season finale, so perhaps he could be seen as the solution with more strong performances.

  31. Atlanta Falcons: Jordan Reed, TE, Florida
Tony Gonzalez is becoming like Brett Favre in terms of flip-flopping about retirement every season. If Gonzalez finally decides to call it a career, the Falcons will strongly consider a tight end early in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Pick change; previously Brandon Jenkins, DE/OLB

  32. Denver Broncos: Robert Lester, S, Alabama
Denver’s young corners have played well alongside Champ Bailey, but safety help is needed because Michael Adams isn’t very good. He’s going to be a 32-year-old entering his contract season anyway.
