NFL Mock Draft 2023 updated March 7

This mock draft will be updated occasionally. Follow @walterfootball for NFL Draft updates.
  1. Chicago Bears Chicago Bears: Tyree Wilson, DE/DT, Texas Tech Texas Tech
Before I begin, I should note that we have some new features, including WalterFootball Premium. We’ve gotten lots of complaints about the ads over the years, but there hasn’t been anything I can do about them because I’ve needed the ad revenue to pay my employees and the hosting. This is an alternative way to view the site. For $7.99 per month, you won’t get any ads. You’ll also have access to a premium chat on Discord where I’ll be every day to answer any questions. If you want to support the site, besides telling others about it, signing up for WalterFootball Premium would be a great way to do so!

Thanks to the incompetence of the Houston Texans, the Bears were able to obtain the top pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Unless Chicago drafts a quarterback, it will trade out of this pick, holding it for a king’s ransom to the highest bidder. Given that so many teams are desperate for a franchise quarterback, the Bears will get a great haul for this selection. They will move down and select one of the top offensive linemen or defensive players available.

The Bears have a miserable offensive line, so Justin Fields doesn’t stand a chance when battling teams with elite pass rushes. The front office must do something about this. However, they should pick the best player available, and it’s not like they don’t need an improved pass rush. In fact, the Bears have the worst pressure rate in the NFL aside from the Falcons.

I’ve changed this from Will Anderson to Jalen Carter because I believed there was a better chance the Bears would obtain the latter after moving down. However, with Carter’s off-the-field issues, perhaps the Bears will turn to Tyree Wilson, who would be a great replacement for Khalil Mack.

Pick change; previously Jalen Carter, DT

  2. Houston Texans NFL Draft 2023 Houston Texans: C.J. Stroud, QB, Ohio State Ohio State
The Texans won’t be able to get the quarterback they want because of their foolish decision to win in Week 18 (I expect the Bears to swap picks with another team that needs a quarterback.) They could trade up to No. 1, but that would make them look extra stupid.

Houston passed on all the quarterbacks in the 2022 NFL Draft. No one blamed them for doing that, but they won’t be able to repeat that strategy this upcoming April.

C.J. Stroud completed 71 percent of his passes this past season. He’s a lethal passer, and as we saw in the college football semi-final, he can run if he needs to with his 4.65 speed.

  3. Arizona Cardinals Arizona Cardinals: Will Anderson, DE/OLB, Alabama Alabama
I think the Cardinals are live for Bijan Robinson, but it seems as though Will Anderson will be available here with the top two picks being quarterbacks. If so, that’s a no-brainer for Arizona, given that it lost Chandler Jones and J.J. Watt in consecutive offseasons.

Will Anderson has ridiculous speed and athleticism. He’s been a force in Alabama’s defense.

  4. Indianapolis Colts Indianapolis Colts: Bryce Young, QB, Alabama Alabama
The Colts need to find a permanent solution at quarterback, rather than play musical chairs at the position. In this scenario, the Colts can trade up with the Bears to leapfrog the divisional rival Texans to obtain the quarterback they want in this class.

Bryce Young has size issues – he’s 5-10, 204 – but he has drawn comparisons to Kyler Murray.

  5. Seattle Seahawks Seattle Seahawks: Jalen Carter, DT, Georgia Georgia
The Seahawks need to do a better job of getting to the quarterback and also stopping the run, especially after that disaster against Josh Jacobs and the Raiders, and subsequently, D’Onta Foreman and the Panthers.

It remains to be seen what will become of Jalen Carter’s draft stock. Carter has off-the-field issues that could be very serious. However, teams could deem that it’s not too bad. The Seahawks have taken chances on troubled players in the past, so they could certainly take a gamble on Carter.

Pick change; previously Jalen Carter, DT

  6. Detroit Lions Detroit Lions: Christian Gonzalez, CB, Oregon Oregon
Detroit’s back seven played well in the second half of the season, but the team still needs a No. 1 cornerback. There’s also a chance that the Lions could go after Bijan Robinson is available. Charlie Campbell details why the Lions would draft Bijan Robinson, although Charlie has Robinson going to Detroit at No. 18.

Christian Gonzalez is a tall cornerback who is fast and athletic.

  7. Las Vegas Raiders Las Vegas Raiders: Anthony Richardson, QB, Florida Florida
I’m stealing this pick from Charlie Campbell’s trade mock draft. This was the prototypical Al Davis pick, and Mark Davis may want to make a big splash. Besides, what else are the Raiders going to do at quarterback? And if Mark Davis ages very quickly, we could get a quote from him saying, “Anthony … Richardson … is a … great playa.”

Anthony Richardson is raw, but has a huge arm and great athleticism. He had a great 2022 debut, but struggled versus Kentucky the following week. He was inconsistent after that, but he looked great at the combine.

  8. Atlanta Falcons Atlanta Falcons: Peter Skoronski, OT/G/C, Northwestern Northwestern
The Falcons possessed a great offensive line when they went to the Super Bowl during the 2016 season. That has since changed. They need a huge boost in the interior right now and a left tackle for the future. Bijan Robinson is also an option if the Falcons think he would be a big upgrade over Tyler Allgeier.

Peter Skoronski is an athletic tackle who has kept his quarterback clean. He can play every position up front.

  9. Carolina Panthers Carolina Panthers: Will Levis, QB, Kentucky Kentucky
The Panthers need a franchise quarterback. I’m sure they’ll attempt to move up for Bryce Young or C.J. Stroud, but if they can’t, they could settle for the third or fourth option in this class.

Will Levis has a big arm and could be chosen in the top 10.

  10. Philadelphia Eagles Philadelphia Eagles: Lukas Van Ness, DE, Iowa Iowa
Brandon Graham won’t be around much longer, so the Eagles will need an edge rusher for the future. Philadelphia’s pass rush was horrendous in the Super Bowl anyhow.

Lukas Van Ness has a relentless motor, but is a bit raw. He was a great performer at the combine.

Pick change; previously Myles Murphy, DE/DT

  11. Tennessee Titans Tennessee Titans: Paris Johnson, OT/G, Ohio State Ohio State
Taylor Lewan is a 32-year-old coming off a knee injury. He was also due $14.8 million next season, so the Titans released him. I imagine the Titans will want to find help with their poor blocking.

Paris Johnson has good athleticism for an offensive lineman, and he can play both tackle and guard.

Pick change; previously Tyler Steen, OT/G

  12. Houston Texans Houston Texans: Jaxon Smith-Njigba, WR, Ohio State Ohio State
The Texans need a second receiver across from Brandin Cooks in the near term, and a different No. 1 wideout for the long haul.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba has incredible speed and athleticism. He had a huge 2021 campaign, which included a terrific Rose Bowl performance.

Pick change; previously Quentin Johnston, WR

  13. New York Jets New York Jets: Broderick Jones, OT/G, Georgia Georgia
Mekhi Becton has been a huge disappointment, so the Jets may use this pick to find a new offensive tackle.

Broderick Jones is a raw lineman who showed great upside at the combine.

Pick change; previously Paris Johnson, OT/G

  14. New England Patriots New England Patriots: Quentin Johnston, WR, TCU TCU
The Patriots need offensive line help, but they also could stand to address their pedestrian receiving corps.

Scouts are smitten with Quentin Johnston, who has drawn comparisons to Julio Jones.

Pick change; previously Jaxon Smith-Njigba, WR

  15. Green Bay Packers Green Bay Packers: Isaiah Foskey, DE, Notre Dame Notre Dame
The Packers need a receiver, but with the two top prospects at the position off the board, they can focus on bolstering their offensive line or front seven. The latter is an issue, as Green Bay had to blitz frequently last year as a result of four players not being able to get to the quarterback consistently.

Isaiah Foskey had a huge 11-sack campaign. He possesses great potential.

  16. Washington Commanders Washington Redskins: Brian Branch, CB/S, Alabama Alabama
The Redskins can’t cover anyone, thanks to William Jackson being a complete bust as a free agent signing. They desperately need someone new to stay with A.J. Brown and CeeDee Lamb.

Brian Branch has nice size and cover ability. He can play anywhere in the secondary.
