*** 2021 NFL MOCK DRAFT updated Dec. 23. This mock draft will be updated occasionally. Follow @walterfootball for NFL Draft updates. ***
  1. Jacksonville Jaguars: Trevor Lawrence, QB, Clemson
The Jaguars were gifted the No. 1 overall pick due to the Jets’ incompetence. This was a franchise-altering turn of events that even had the mayor of Jacksonville thanking the Jets via Twitter. If the Jaguars hold on to this selection, it’ll be obvious. The Gardner Minshew experience was fun, but it’s sadly coming to an end. Minshew is a feisty quarterback, but will be relegated to backup duties because he can’t throw passes longer than 15 yards.

Trevor Lawrence is locked in as the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He has it all, and that includes size (6-6, 215), a big arm, accuracy and mobility.

Pick change; previously Trevor Lawrence, QB

  2. New York Jets: Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State
The Jets made a very foolish decision to beat the Rams. Now, they have a dilemma. Do they select the second-best quarterback in the class or stick with Sam Darnold? Considering that Darnold has shown no signs of becoming a franchise quarterback and has admitted to “seeing ghosts,” it would be best to trade him, especially given that New York will have to pay him a large contract to retain him. It would be smart to trade him for a second- or third-round pick.

Justin Fields made the egregious mistake of committing to a program with a talented, young quarterback in Jake Fromm, so he was blocked from starting. Fields, however, was able to transfer to Ohio State, where he dominated in his first season. He continued his strong play into the shortened 2020 campaign, aside from sloppy performances against Indiana and Northwestern.

Pick change; previously Trevor Lawrence, QB

  3. Cincinnati Bengals: Penei Sewell, OT, Oregon
Joe Burrow was doing so well considering that he didn’t have much time to throw. This ultimately led to his unfortunate knee injury. The Bengals need to fill the numerous holes they have on the offensive line.

Penei Sewell was so good as a sophomore, he received a second-place Heisman vote.

  4. Carolina Panthers: Ja’Marr Chase, WR, LSU
A receiver may not seem like a logical choice for the Panthers, given that they have major talent at the position. However, both Robby Anderson and Curtis Samuel are impending free agents. Besides, Ja’Marr Chase is the best player available.

Chase caught 17 passes in his freshman year, then took a huge step forward in 2019, displaying the ability of a top-10 prospect.

  5. Atlanta Falcons: Gregory Rousseau, DE, Miami
The Falcons have needed to improve their pass rush for years. They need help on their defensive line, whether that’s in the interior or on the edge.

Gregory Rousseau logged double-digit sacks as a redshirt freshman in 2019. He was compared to Calais Campbell entering Miami.

Pick change; previously Aidan Hutchinson, DE

  6. Miami Dolphins: Micah Parsons, LB, Penn State
The Dolphins need to bolster their linebacking corps, as it would be the weak point of their defense if the pass rush is addressed.

Looking like the next great linebacker to come out of Penn State, Micah Parsons was very productive. That was not a surprise, as Parsons was a highly athletic five-star recruit.

  7. Philadelphia Eagles: Jaycee Horn, CB, South Carolina
The Eagles have some obvious problems on defense. They’ve been poor against the pass for years. They’ve tried different No. 1 cornerbacks, but it’s time for a permanent solution.

Jaycee Horn is a fast, fluid athlete. Team sources have told Charlie Campbell that Horn is a better prospect than his teammate, Israel Mukuamu.

  8. Dallas Cowboys: Kwity Paye, DE/DT, Michigan
The Cowboys have dealt with numerous injuries this year, which is part of the reason they’ve struggled so much defensively. However, they still need an injection of talent, and a dynamic pass rusher would go a long way in helping the secondary.

Kwity Paye has a chance to move into the upper half of the first round; he’s shown some upside in his only year as a starter.

Pick change; previously Gregory Rousseau, DE

  9. Los Angeles Chargers: Alijah Vera-Tucker, OT, USC
The Chargers need to protect Justin Herbert as well as possible. They have a huge hole at left tackle that must be addressed.

Alijah Vera-Tucker made a great decision to opt back in to the season. He has played extremely well at left tackle for the Trojans.

Pick change; previously Gregory Rousseau, DE

  10. New York Giants: Rashawn Slater, OT/G/C, Northwestern
The Giants can’t count on the injury-prone Nate Solder, especially after he quit on them this year.

Rashawn Slater can play every position on the offensive line. He some great tape against Chase Young.

Pick change; previously Alijah Vera-Tucker, OT

  11. Detroit Lions: Christian Barmore, DE/DT, Alabama
The Lions need to address every position on defense, and this includes the front line, which took a hit with some offseason losses prior to 2020.

Christian Barmore has nice length, quickness and athleticism.

Pick change; previously Carlos Basham, DE/DT

  12. San Francisco 49ers: Patrick Surtain II, CB, Alabama
The 49ers have some excellent cornerbacks, but with Richard Sherman and Jason Verrett entering free agency, help will likely be needed at the position.

Son of former Dolphins star cornerback Patrick Surtain Sr., Surtain II was tested early by teams, yet was able to punish opponents for doing so. The 6-foot-2 cornerback projects as a top-15 pick in the future.

  13. Denver Broncos: Christian Darrisaw, OT, Virginia Tech
The Broncos just signed Garett Bolles to a long-term deal, but they could use a better bookend on the offensive line.

Christian Darrisaw had an amazing 2020 season, propelling himself into first-round consideration.

Pick change; previously Rashawn Slater, OT/G/C

  14. Minnesota Vikings: Carlos Basham, DE/DT, Wake Forest
The Vikings need as much defensive help as possible. They have to bolster their defensive line to replace some recent departures.

Carlos Basham always stuffed the run well, but his pass rush improved tremendously from 2018 to 2019.

Pick change; previously Kwity Paye, DE/DT

  15. New England Patriots: Jaylen Waddle, WR, Alabama
The Patriots have the worst receiving corps in the NFL. The only viable, young player they have at the position is Jakobi Meyers.

Jaylen Waddle looks to be the next great Alabama receiver to enter the NFL. He’s one of the quickest players in college football.

  16. Chicago Bears: Trey Lance, QB, North Dakota State
The Bears need to move on from Mitchell Trubisky. They could opt for one of the four projected first-round quarterbacks in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Lance has some nice physical tools, and he’s coming off a huge year in 2019. For more on him, check out Charlie Campbell’s entry in the NFL Hot Press.

Pick change; previously Christian Darrisaw, OT
