*** 2016 NFL MOCK DRAFT (2 rounds) updated Sept. 9. This NFL Mock Draft will be updated occasionally for important events. Check out old versions of this 2016 NFL Mock Draft in the archived mock section. Follow @walterfootball for NFL Draft updates. ***
  1. Washington Redskins: Cardale Jones, QB, Ohio State
Jay Gruden has done such a terrific job as the Redskins’ coach thus far, so it’s almost crazy to imagine that he won’t be back in 2016. OK, in all seriousness, Washington is a complete disaster, and it’s easy to envision Daniel Snyder firing everyone after what should be a 2-14 season. Thus, even though Cardale Jones doesn’t fit Gruden’s system, it won’t matter because there will be a new coaching staff in place.

Cardale Jones would’ve been a second-round prospect had he declared for the 2015 NFL Draft, though there was a chance he would’ve gone late in the first via a team trading up. That will hardly be the case in the 2016 NFL Draft. If Jones continues to thrive – he was impressive in the opener – he’ll be a top-five selection, and he could potentially go No. 1 overall. He has way too much upside and natural talent, displaying Ben Roethlisberger- or Daunte Culpepper-type ability.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

Pick change; previously Christian Hackenberg, QB

  2. New York Jets: Connor Cook, QB, Michigan State
Blegh. I’m not a fan of Connor Cook because of his accuracy issues, but in a quarterback-hungry league, he could very easily be chosen second overall. The Jets obviously need a franchise quarterback, and Geno Smith, who was already on shaky footing, displayed that he had zero leadership in the locker room when some random linebacker made him look like Glass Joe from the Mike Tyson’s Punchout Nintendon game. Glass Geno, perhaps?

Pick change; previously Robert Nkemdiche, DE

  3. Chicago Bears: Joey Bosa, DE/DT, Ohio State
Charlie Campbell recently reported that Joey Bosa is regarded by some as a 5-7 overall player; not a top prospect as many believe he is. You can read all about it in the NFL Draft Rumor Mill. However, the one caveat is that Bosa could rise in a weaker class, and I have to think the Bears would love to grab him in an attempt to improve their underwhelming defense. I’m sure John Fox would love to add a play-maker to his defense, which sorely needs one.

Pick change; previously Connor Cook, QB

  4. San Francisco 49ers: Laremy Tunsil, OT, Ole Miss
I recently published a new page called NFL Disaster Ratings where I discuss how dire each injury, retirement and suspension is for each team. I included Anthony Davis as one of the write-ups. The right tackle surprisingly retired, so he’ll need to be replaced.

  5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Ronnie Stanley, OT, Notre Dame
The Buccaneers spent a couple of second-day selections on offensive linemen, so this pick might seem curious. However, Ronnie Stanley is the best player available, and the tackle position isn’t completely resolved. Demar Dotson, who is dealing with a knee injury, will be heading into his contract season at this time next year, while Donovan Smith’s best place might be at guard.

  6. Cleveland Browns: Jared Goff, QB, California
You know those Geico “It’s What You Do” commercials? Well, they could easily do one for desperate NFL teams because they reach for quarterbacks. It’s what they do. And it’s hard to blame them, either, given the state the league is in. If you don’t have a quarterback, you’re screwed.

The Browns most certainly don’t have one, and no, Johnny Manziel is not the answer. If the NFL awarded six points for rolling $20s in bathrooms, he would be a Pro Bowler, but sadly, that is not the case. I expect Cleveland to target a signal-caller in the 2016 NFL Draft. In a previous update, that would’ve been Christian Hackenberg, but he has dropped considerably after that ridiculous performance he had versus Temple. Jared Goff, whom I’ve been down on, was much better, albeit against a weak opponent.

Pick change; previously Cardale Jones, QB

  7. Tennessee Titans: Vernon Hargreaves, CB, Florida
Most teams draft a weapon or a blocker right after obtaining a new franchise quarterback, but the Titans’ cornerback situation was so dire that they were considering a player at that position atop Round 2. Here’s their chance to find help at that spot.

  8. Oakland Raiders: Jalen Ramsey, S, Florida State
Some teams are concerned about Jalen Ramsey moving to cornerback this season, but he’ll ultimately find a home at safety in the NFL, given that he’s seen as such a special talent at that position. The Raiders obviously need help there, as they still start Charles Woodson, who can barely move at this stage of his career.

Pick change; previously Joey Bosa, DE/DT

  9. Jacksonville Jaguars: Laquon Treadwell, WR, Ole Miss
The rumors about the Jaguars considering Amari Cooper were untrue. The front office drafted two receivers early the previous year, so it wants to give them time to develop. If, however, one of them disappoints this upcoming season – and it definitely seems that Marqise Lee is barely going to do anything in 2015 – this will be an option Jacksonville will explore. There was previous optimism about Justin Blackmon turning things around, but the team has given up on him.

  10. St. Louis Rams: Tyler Boyd, WR, Pittsburgh
The Rams had interest in DeVante Parker as a candidate for No. 10 overall, but they opted to go with Todd Gurley instead. Perhaps they’ll find a top receiver next spring because they absolutely need to get Kenny Britt out of the starting lineup. I thought about dropping Tyler Boyd in this update in the wake of his DUI arrest, but the Rams are a team that tends to take chances on troubled players.

  11. Carolina Panthers: Robert Nkemdiche, DT, Ole Miss
It may seem strange that the Panthers would be bolstering a strength here, but we’ve seen them take the best player on their board before. They would love a receiver – and I’m sure their hearts were broken when Tyler Boyd was chosen earlier – but going with the top prospect remaining is never a bad option. Besides the Panthers could use some insurance, as they probably won’t be able to re-sign both Star Lotulelei and Kawann Short a couple of years from now.

  12. New Orleans Saints: Leonard Floyd, DE/OLB, Georgia
The Saints drafted injury-risk Hau’oli Kikaha in the second round of the 2015 draft. Even if he pans out, the team will need another pass-rusher in the wake of the Junior Galette mess to put pressure on the many talented quarterbacks in the NFC South.

Pick change; previously Leonard Floyd, DE/OLB

  13. New York Giants: A’Shawn Robinson, DE/DT, Alabama
Johnathan Hankins is a very talented defensive tackle, but that’s all the Giants have at the position. They need to fill the huge void they have next to Hankins, so I expect that to be a priority for them next offseason.

Pick change; previously A’Shawn Robinson, DE/DT

  14. Houston Texans: Myles Jack, LB/RB, UCLA
The Texans spent a third-round pick on Benardrick McKinney, but they’ll be in the market for another inside linebacker next offseason once they release Brian Cushing, who has struggled in recent years. Myles Jack figures to be an upgrade.

  15. Kansas City Chiefs: DeForest Buckner, DE/DT, Oregon
Andy Reid loves bolstering the trenches in the early stages of the NFL Draft, and he might look at grabbing a defensive lineman in the first round next April. Mike DeVito is coming off a torn Achilles, so he may never be the same again, while the other defensive ends don’t really bring much to the table.

Pick change; previously A’Shawn Robinson, DE/DT

  16. Detroit Lions: Taylor Decker, OT, Ohio State
The Lions upgraded the guard position in the 2015 draft, but they still have a huge hole at right tackle. I can’t imagine them failing to address this void two years in a row.
