2014 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2

Last update: Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013. Major changes in all 3 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

The order of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft is based on my NFL Power Rankings.

*** THIS IS A LIVE 2014 NFL MOCK DRAFT. PICKS ARE BEING POSTED NOW. TO SEE PREVIOUS VERSIONS, CHECK OUT THE ARCHIVED 2014 NFL MOCK DRAFT SECTION. FOLLOW @walterfootball FOR UPDATES ***

  1. Houston Texans: James Hurst, OT, North Carolina
As mentioned earlier, teams that spend early picks on quarterbacks often double up on offense. If the Texans decide to do that, they could certainly upgrade the right tackle position, which is a big problem area for them.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

  2. Atlanta Falcons: Cyril Richardson, G/OT, Baylor
The Falcons have some major issues on the offensive line. Everyone wants to look at left tackle, but the guard position is an area that must be upgraded as well.

  3. Washington Redskins: Stephon Tuitt, DE/DT, Notre Dame
The Redskins need help all over their defensive, including up front. They’re getting no push from their defensive line.

  4. Minnesota Vikings: Tajh Boyd, QB, Clemson
The Vikings paid Josh Freeman $3 million to find out if he can be their long-term franchise quarterback. That’s how desperate they are for one. Christian Ponder isn’t too bad, but he’s not good enough to consistently lead the team in the playoffs.

If the Rams get this pick via the trade I mentioned in Round 1, they could look at linebacker Christian Jones or defensive tackle Anthony Johnson.

Pick change; previously Anthony Johnson, DT

  5. Cleveland Browns: Ryan Shazier, LB, Ohio State
The Browns have a great front seven, but the one liability in the group is Craig Robertson, who has been abused in coverage this season.

Pick change; previously Jordan Matthews, WR

  6. Oakland Raiders: Anthony Johnson, DT, LSU
The Raiders strangely passed on Star Lotulelei and Sharrif Floyd when they had a huge need at defensive tackle. That is still the case, as Vance Walker and Pat Sims are a pretty underwhelming duo.

Pick change; previously Aaron Donald, DT

  7. Buffalo Bills: Adrian Hubbard, DE/OLB, Alabama
The Bills spent lots of energy addressing their offense in the 2013 NFL Draft, but they didn’t do anything to help their pass rush. That would explain why they traded for Jerry Hughes a couple of days afterward. Hughes has played well this year, but Buffalo could use another player who can get to the quarterback.

Pick change; previously Aaron Colvin, CB

  8. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE, Washington
The Buccaneers could use an upgrade at tight end to help the emerging Mike Glennon, and the ultra-talented Austin Seferian-Jenkins is the top player available.

  9. Jacksonville Jaguars: Lache Seastrunk, RB, Baylor
Maurice Jones-Drew is an impending free agent. He’ll likely want to leave such a terrible situation, so the Jaguars will need to find a new running back.

  10. Tennessee Titans: Bishop Sankey, RB, Washington
There have been reports indicating that Chris Johnson will be cut this offseason. If that’s the case, Tennessee will obviously be searching for a new lead running back.

Pick change; previously Tajh Boyd, QB

  11. New York Giants: Kelcy Quarles, DT, South Carolina
Linval Joseph is an impending free agent, so the Giants will have to find some help at defensive tackle if he leaves.

Pick change; previously Marcus Roberson, CB

  12. St. Louis Rams: Aaron Donald, DT, Pittsburgh
The Rams have a ferocious pass rush, but it could be even better if Kendall Langford is upgraded. Langford signed a big contract nearly two years ago, but he has been a huge disappointment.

Pick change; previously Kyle Fuller, CB

  13. Pittsburgh Steelers: Aaron Colvin, CB, Oklahoma
If Ike Taylor were a horse, he would have been on his way to the glue factory a couple of months ago. The Steelers need upgrades all over their defense, including the cornerback position.

Pick change; previously Corey Robinson, OT

  14. San Diego Chargers: Marcus Roberson, CB, Florida
The Chargers’ pathetic defense has made every single quarterback look like a Pro Bowler this year (save for Andy Dalton and Eli Manning). They have a dreadful cornerback situation, which could be remedied with the use of an early-round pick in May’s draft.

Pick change; previously Adrian Hubbard, DE/OLB

  15. New York Jets: Jordan Matthews, WR, Vanderbilt
Geno Smith has looked like the worst quarterback in the NFL on many occasions this season – even worse than Brandon Weeden and Jeff Tuel – but it’s not like he has much of a chance with his horrific receiving corps. Santonio Holmes can’t stay healthy, while Stephen Hill is a bust.

Pick change; previously Lamarcus Joyner, S

  16. Green Bay Packers: A.J. Johnson, ILB, Tennessee
The Packers released Desmond Bishop in the offseason. On top of that, the rapidly aging A.J. Hawk will have an expiring contract soon. Ted Thompson will have to address the inside linebacker position in the near future.

Pick change; previously Ryan Shazier, ILB

  17. Dallas Cowboys: Christian Jones, LB, Florida State
Bruce Carter has been a poor fit in Dallas’ new 4-3 system. The Cowboys will have to consider spending an early draft pick on a linebacker.

  18. Miami Dolphins: Kyle Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech
The Dolphins need help at cornerback. Brent Grimes, coming off a torn Achilles, is just a short-term solution. Dimitri Patterson, the other starter, hasn’t been able to stay healthy.

Pick change; previously Loucheiz Purifoy, CB

  19. Chicago Bears: A.J. McCarron, QB, Alabama
It’s looking more and more like the Bears will allow Jay Cutler to walk in free agency. If that happens, they’ll obviously be searching for a quarterback in the spring.

Pick change; previously Zach Mettenberger, QB

  20. Arizona Cardinals: Trent Murphy, DE/OLB, Stanford
The Cardinals, who typically go with the top player on their board, will almost definitely be interested in someone like Trent Murphy, as they really need an upgrade at outside linebacker across from Sam Acho.

Pick change; previously Bishop Sankey, RB

  21. Baltimore Ravens: Allen Robinson, WR, Penn State
It should be quite apparent that the Ravens desperately need help at receiver. Neither Jacoby Jones nor Marlon Brown should be a No. 2 wideout in the NFL. Think Joe Flacco misses Anquan Boldin?

  22. Detroit Lions: Bryan Stork, C, Florida State
Dominic Raiola has seemingly been on Detroit’s roster forever, but he’ll be a 35-year-old free agent in March. The Lions will probably bring in a new center.

  23. Indianapolis Colts: Brandin Cooks, WR, Oregon State
We now see what Indianapolis’ offense looks like without Reggie Wayne. Wayne will be back next year, but he won’t be around forever. The Colts need a long-term solution at wideout to go along with T.Y. Hilton.

Pick change; previously Odell Beckham, WR

  24. Philadelphia Eagles: Lamarcus Joyner, S, Florida State
Philadelphia’s defense is terrible for many reasons, one of which is the safety position. Nate Allen is garbage, while Patrick Chung can’t stay healthy.

Pick change; previously Craig Loston, S

  25. San Francisco 49ers: Odell Beckham, WR, LSU
Anquan Boldin and Mario Manningham will both be free agents next March. The 49ers will need a new receiver to complement Michael Crabtree.

Pick change; previously Brandin Cooks, WR

  26. Carolina Panthers: Ka’Deem Carey, RB, Arizona
Cam Newton has made huge improvements this year, but he could still really benefit from a potent, pass-catching weapon coming out of the backfield.

  27. Cincinnati Bengals: Jackson Jeffcoat, DE, Texas
The Bengals drafted Margus Hunt, but they have Michael Johnson hitting free agency soon. With Carlos Dunlap recently extended, it’s very unlikely that Johnson will be retained.

  28. San Francisco 49ers: Dominique Easley, DE, Florida
The 49ers will need a successor for Justin Smith (Tank Carradine, maybe?) and also some depth on the defensive line. With four Day 2 selections, they can take a chance on someone like Dominique Easley, a tremendous talent who is coming off a terrible injury.

  29. New Orleans Saints: Corey Robinson, OT, South Carolina
The Saints don’t value offensive tackles enough to take one in the first round, but perhaps they’ll search for an upgrade over the struggling Charles Brown on Day 2.

Pick change; previously Brandon Scherff, OT

  30. New England Patriots: Travis Swanson, C, Arkansas
Ryan Wendell, an impending free agent, has been most responsible for Tom Brady’s poor pass protection.

  31. Seattle Seahawks: Ben Gardner, DE, Stanford
The Seahawks can afford to go with the best player available. They signed a couple of defensive ends this offseason to short-term deals, so they may want to find a decade-long solution at the position.

Pick change; previously Greg Robinson, OT

  32. Denver Broncos: David Yankey, G/OT, Stanford
What’s better than Peyton Manning and four awesome targets? Peyton Manning and four awesome targets with upgraded protection. Zane Beadles, the weak link on a solid Denver front, is an impending free agent.

Pick change; previously Trent Murphy, DE/OLB
