2014 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2

Last update: Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013. Major changes in all 3 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

The order of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft is based on my NFL Power Rankings.

*** THIS IS A LIVE 2014 NFL MOCK DRAFT. PICKS ARE BEING POSTED NOW. TO SEE PREVIOUS VERSIONS, CHECK OUT THE ARCHIVED 2014 NFL MOCK DRAFT SECTION. FOLLOW @walterfootball FOR UPDATES ***

  1. Houston Texans: James Hurst, OT, North Carolina
Teams that spend early picks on quarterbacks often double up on offense. If the Texans decide to do that, they could certainly upgrade the right tackle position, which is a big problem area for them.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

Pick change; previously Tajh Boyd, QB

  2. Washington Redskins: Stephon Tuitt, DE/DT, Notre Dame
The Redskins need help all over their defensive, including up front. They’re getting no push from their defensive line.

  3. Atlanta Falcons: Cyril Richardson, G/OT, Baylor
The Falcons have some major issues on the offensive line. Everyone wants to look at left tackle, but the guard position is an area that must be upgraded as well.

  4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE, Washington
The Buccaneers could use an upgrade at tight end to help the emerging Mike Glennon, and the ultra-talented Austin Seferian-Jenkins is the top player available.

If the Rams get this pick via the trade I mentioned in Round 1, they could look at linebacker Christian Jones or defensive tackle Anthony Johnson.

  5. Jacksonville Jaguars: Lache Seastrunk, RB, Baylor
Maurice Jones-Drew is an impending free agent. He’ll likely want to leave such a terrible situation, so the Jaguars will need to find a new running back.

  6. Minnesota Vikings: Anthony Johnson, DT, LSU
The Vikings drafted Sharrif Floyd, but they’ll need another defensive tackle with Kevin Williams being an impending free agent. Besides, Anthony Johnson is the top player available.

  7. Oakland Raiders: Aaron Donald, DT, Pittsburgh
The Raiders strangely passed on Star Lotulelei and Sharrif Floyd when they had a huge need at defensive tackle. That is still the case, as Vance Walker and Pat Sims are a pretty underwhelming duo.

  8. Buffalo Bills: Aaron Colvin, CB, Oklahoma
The Bills were expected to address the cornerback position in the 2013 NFL Draft, but never got around to it. They probably won’t avoid that area two years in a row.

  9. Cleveland Browns: Jordan Matthews, WR, Vanderbilt
Brad Nessler called Greg Little “Mr. Dependable.” That’s pretty accurate, but only if you’re depending on Little dropping passes. The Browns need a new No. 2 wideout.

  10. New York Jets: Lamarcus Joyner, S, Florida State
The Jets have major problems at safety, as neither Antonio Allen nor Dawan Landry should be starting. The Ed Reed signing predictably hasn’t helped at all.

Pick change; previously Brandin Cooks, WR

  11. Tennessee Titans: Tajh Boyd, QB, Clemson
The Titans needed to make the playoffs for this current regime to survive. If they don’t, it’s likely that Mike Munchak and the front office are axed this offseason. If that’s the case, the new staff may want to bring in its own quarterback. Outside of a few games earlier in the season, Jake Locker hasn’t shown much promise. Besides, he hasn’t been able to stay healthy.

Pick change; previously Greg Robinson, OT

  12. San Diego Chargers: Adrian Hubbard, DE/OLB, Alabama
The Chargers were so desperate for help at rush linebacker that they signed Dwight Freeney. The former Colt is obviously not a long-term solution for the team’s pass-rushing woes.

Pick change; previously Trent Murphy, DE/OLB

  13. New York Giants: Marcus Roberson, CB, Florida
The Giants need help at cornerback, and Marcus Roberson happens to be one of the top players available.

Pick change; previously James Hurst, OT

  14. St. Louis Rams: Kyle Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech
Cornerback wasn’t seen as a need three months ago, but Cortland Finnegan has been torched by everyone this season. The Rams will have to find someone new to play across from Janoris Jenkins.

  15. Pittsburgh Steelers: Corey Robinson, OT, South Carolina
The Steelers have obvious issues on the offensive line. They won’t reach for a left tackle, but they’ll certainly draft one if a particular lineman happens to be one of the top players on their board.

  16. Green Bay Packers: Ryan Shazier, LB, Ohio State
The Packers released Desmond Bishop in the offseason. On top of that, the rapidly aging A.J. Hawk will have an expiring contract soon. Ted Thompson will have to address the inside linebacker position in the near future.

  17. Miami Dolphins: Loucheiz Purifoy, CB, Florida
The Dolphins need help at cornerback. Brent Grimes, coming off a torn Achilles, is just a short-term solution. Dimitri Patterson, the other starter, hasn’t been able to stay healthy.

Pick change; previously Marcus Roberson, CB

  18. Chicago Bears: Zach Mettenberger, QB, LSU
It’s looking more and more like the Bears will allow Jay Cutler to walk in free agency. If that happens, they’ll obviously be searching for a quarterback in the spring.

  19. Arizona Cardinals: Bishop Sankey, RB, Washington
Andre Ellington is a great threat out of the backfield who can go the distance on any play, but the Arizona coaching staff doesn’t see him as an every-down runner. Perhaps they’ll pair him with someone who is.

  20. Philadelphia Eagles: Craig Loston, S, LSU
Philadelphia’s defense is terrible for many reasons, one of which is the safety position. Nate Allen is garbage, while Patrick Chung can’t stay healthy.

Pick change; previously Lamarcus Joyner, S

  21. Baltimore Ravens: Allen Robinson, WR, Penn State
It should be quite apparent that the Ravens desperately need help at receiver. Neither Jacoby Jones nor Marlon Brown should be a No. 2 wideout in the NFL. Think Joe Flacco misses Anquan Boldin?

Pick change; previously Adrian Hubbard, DE/OLB

  22. Dallas Cowboys: Christian Jones, LB, Florida State
Bruce Carter has been a poor fit in Dallas’ new 4-3 system. The Cowboys will have to consider spending an early draft pick on a linebacker.

  23. Detroit Lions: Bryan Stork, C, Florida State
Dominic Raiola has seemingly been on Detroit’s roster forever, but he’ll be a 35-year-old free agent in March. The Lions will probably bring in a new center.

  24. Cincinnati Bengals: Jackson Jeffcoat, DE, Texas
The Bengals drafted Margus Hunt, but they have Michael Johnson hitting free agency soon. With Carlos Dunlap recently extended, it’s very unlikely that Johnson will be retained.

  25. San Francisco 49ers: Brandin Cooks, WR, Oregon State
Anquan Boldin and Mario Manningham will both be free agents next March. The 49ers will need a new receiver to complement Michael Crabtree.

Pick change; previously Allen Robinson, WR

  26. Indianapolis Colts: Odell Beckham, WR, LSU
We now see what Indianapolis’ offense looks like without Reggie Wayne. Wayne will be back next year, but he won’t be around forever. The Colts need a long-term solution at wideout to go along with T.Y. Hilton.

Pick change; previously Ed Stinson, DE/DT

  27. Carolina Panthers: Ka’Deem Carey, RB, Arizona
Cam Newton has made huge improvements this year, but he could still really benefit from a potent, pass-catching weapon coming out of the backfield.

Pick change; previously Craig Loston, S

  28. San Francisco 49ers: Dominique Easley, DE, Florida
The 49ers will need a successor for Justin Smith (Tank Carradine, maybe?) and also some depth on the defensive line. With four Day 2 selections, they can take a chance on someone like Dominique Easley, a tremendous talent who is coming off a terrible injury.

  29. New Orleans Saints: Brandon Scherff, OT, Iowa
The Saints don’t value offensive tackles enough to take one in the first round, but perhaps they’ll search for an upgrade over the struggling Charles Brown on Day 2.

  30. New England Patriots: Travis Swanson, C, Arkansas
Ryan Wendell, an impending free agent, has been most responsible for Tom Brady’s poor pass protection.

  31. Denver Broncos: Trent Murphy, DE/OLB, Stanford
The Broncos are getting to the quarterback once again now that Von Miller is back in the lineup, but they still need to upgrade their pass rush. They can’t count on Shaun Phillips to produce much longer.

Pick change; previously Yawin Smallwood, ILB

  32. Seattle Seahawks: Greg Robinson, OT, Auburn
The Seahawks’ biggest issue right now is pass protection, as we all saw several Monday nights ago. They have so many injuries on the offensive line, but that was an area that had to be upgraded even before multiple blockers went down.

Pick change; previously David Yankey, G/oT
