2014 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2

Last update: Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013. Major changes in all 3 rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

The order of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft is based on my NFL Power Rankings.

*** THIS IS A LIVE 2014 NFL MOCK DRAFT. PICKS ARE BEING POSTED NOW. TO SEE PREVIOUS VERSIONS, CHECK OUT THE ARCHIVED 2013 NFL MOCK DRAFT SECTION. FOLLOW @walterfootball FOR UPDATES ***

  1. Jacksonville Jaguars: Lache Seastrunk, RB, Baylor
Maurice Jones-Drew is an impending free agent. He’ll likely want to leave such a terrible situation, so the Jaguars will need to find a new running back.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

  2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Zach Mettenberger, QB, LSU
The Buccaneers will almost certainly have a new regime in place next year, so they’ll want to draft their own quarterback if Mike Glennon struggles in the second half of the season.

  3. Minnesota Vikings: Derek Carr, QB, Fresno State
The Vikings didn’t find a young quarterback this offseason because they didn’t want to hurt Christian Ponder’s confidence. However, Ponder seems done and Matt Cassel sucks. If Josh Freeman doesn’t show any promise – after his dreadful Monday night debut, it’s obvious he won’t – Minnesota may look into drafting a young signal-caller.

Pick change; previously A.J. McCarron, QB

  4. New York Giants: Ryan Shazier, LB, Ohio State
The Giants have one of the worst linebacking corps in the NFL. Something must be done about this. Jon Beason isn’t the answer.

  5. Washington Redskins: Loucheiz Purifoy, CB, Florida
The Redskins have the worst defense in the NFL (though the Falcons may have something to say about that). They’re currently ranked 30th against the pass in terms of YPA, and DeAngelo Hall won’t be around much longer.

  6. Atlanta Falcons: Corey Robinson, OT, South Carolina
Think the Falcons regret giving Sam Baker such a big contract? Baker hasn’t played much this year, but he’s been awful when on the field.

Pick change; previously Cameron Erving, OT

  7. Houston Texans: Stephen Morris, QB, Miami
Case Keenum will get a chance to prove himself for the rest of the season. If he doesn’t convince Houston’s front office that he can be a solid starter, the team will attempt to find a franchise quarterback in the spring.

  8. Pittsburgh Steelers: James Hurst, OT, North Carolina
Kelvin Beachum had a couple of nice starts before bombing against the Raiders. The Steelers then tried Mike Adams, who sucked once again. They need a solution at left tackle.

Pick change; previously Stephon Tuitt, DE/DT

  9. Philadelphia Eagles: Brandon Coleman, WR, Rutgers
Jeremy Maclin, who will be a free agent in March, tore his ACL prior to the season. Maclin hasn’t been able to stay healthy throughout his career, so the Eagles may want to search for a new No. 2 receiver next offseason.

Pick change; previously Craig Loston, S

  10. Buffalo Bills: Aaron Colvin, CB, Oklahoma
The Bills were expected to address the cornerback position in the 2013 NFL Draft, but never got around to it. They probably won’t avoid that area two years in a row. Justin Rogers can’t be allowed on the field anymore.

  11. St. Louis Rams: Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State
Cornerback wasn’t seen as a need about a month ago, but Cortland Finnegan has been torched by everyone this season. If he keeps struggling, the Rams will have to find someone new to play across from Janoris Jenkins.

Pick change; previously Kyle Fuller, CB

  12. Cleveland Browns: Craig Loston, S, LSU
Here’s some secondary help for the Browns, who could use someone to challenge Tashaun Gipson at safety.

Pick change; previously Brandon Coleman, WR

  13. Oakland Raiders: Bishop Sankey, RB, Washington
Like the Jaguars, the Raiders will be faced with a running back heading for the market. Darren McFadden will probably head elsewhere.

  14. Tennessee Titans: Trent Murphy, DE/OLB, Stanford
The Titans need to bring in someone to pressure the quarterback across from Derrick Morgan. Kamerion Wimbley hasn’t done anything this year.

  15. Miami Dolphins: Timmy Jernigan, DT, Florida State
Both Randy Starks and Paul Soliai are impending free agents. The Dolphins will have to replenish depth in the spring.

Pick change; previously Darqueze Dennard, CB

  16. Baltimore Ravens: Adrian Hubbard, DE/OLB, Alabama
This may seem like an odd selection with Terrell Suggs and Elvis Dumervil both playing well, but Courtney Upshaw does not look like he’s developing into a potential starter down the road.

  17. New York Jets: Ka’Deem Carey, RB, Arizona
The Jets have three running backs they like to use on their roster, but none of them happens to be a legitimate starter. Geno Smith would improve if he had a viable threat coming out of the backfield.

  18. Arizona Cardinals: Stephon Tuitt, DE/DT, Notre Dame
The Cardinals may part ways with Darnell Dockett soon. Dockett, 33 in May, is due about $12 million over the next two seasons. He hasn’t played well the past couple of seasons, so he’s not worth keeping around at that price tag.

Pick change; previously Derek Carr, QB

  19. Chicago Bears: A.J. McCarron, QB, Alabama
I find it completely insane that the Bears could let Jay Cutler walk. If that happens, they’ll obviously be searching for a quarterback in the spring.

Pick change; previously Timmy Jernigan, DT

  20. Carolina Panthers: De’Anthony Thomas, RB, Oregon
Cam Newton is an inconsistent passer. He could really benefit from a potent, pass-catching weapon coming out of the backfield.

  21. Dallas Cowboys: Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State
The Cowboys need to think about bringing in someone to challenge Morris Claiborne, who has been in and out of the starting lineup because of performance issues.

Pick change; previously Damian Swann, CB

  22. San Diego Chargers: Jeremiah Attaochu, DE/OLB, Georgia Tech
The Chargers were so desperate for help at rush linebacker that they signed Dwight Freeney. The former Colt is obviously not a long-term solution for the team’s pass-rushing woes.

  23. Detroit Lions: Bryan Stork, C, Florida State
Dominic Raiola has seemingly been on Detroit’s roster forever, but he’ll be a 35-year-old free agent in March. The Lions will probably bring in a new center.

  24. Indianapolis Colts: Ed Stinson, DE/DT, Alabama
I mocked Datone Jones to the Colts for a while in the 2013 NFL Draft because they need a pass-rushing presence up front. That’s still a hole they have to fill, as we learned by watching Indianapolis fail to pressure Philip Rivers a couple of Monday nights ago.

  25. Green Bay Packers: Christian Jones, LB, Florida State
The Packers released Desmond Bishop in the offseason. On top of that, the rapidly aging A.J. Hawk will have an expiring contract soon. Ted Thompson will have to address the inside linebacker position in the near future.

  26. New England Patriots: Michael Dyer, RB, Louisville
The Patriots, as we all know, like to take chances on troubled players. Michael Dyer would be a consensus first-round pick if he had a clean off-the-field history. New England may bring him in if Stevan Ridley’s fumbling problems persist.

  27. Cincinnati Bengals: Jackson Jeffcoat, DE, Texas
The Bengals drafted Margus Hunt, but they have Michael Johnson hitting free agency soon. With Carlos Dunlap recently extended, it’s very unlikely that Johnson will be retained.

  28. San Francisco 49ers: Dominique Easley, DE, Florida
The 49ers will need a successor for Justin Smith (Tank Carradine, maybe?) and also some depth on the defensive line. With four Day 2 selections, they can take a chance on someone like Dominique Easley, a tremendous talent who is coming off a terrible injury.

  29. New Orleans Saints: Henry Anderson, DE/DT, Stanford
I mocked Sheldon Richardson to the Saints a couple of times last spring because they happen to be thin at defensive end in their new 3-4. That’s still the case.

  30. Denver Broncos: Ben Gardner, DE, Stanford
The Broncos are getting to the quarterback once again now that Von Miller is back in the lineup, but they still need to upgrade their pass rush. They can’t count on Shaun Phillips to produce much longer.

Pick change; previously Will Sutton, DT

  31. Seattle Seahawks: Gabe Jackson, G, Mississippi State
The Seahawks have multiple areas of concern on their offensive line, including both guard spots. Imagine how potent Russell Wilson would be with upgraded protection.

  32. San Francisco 49ers: Brandin Cooks, WR, Oregon State
Anquan Boldin and Mario Manningham will both be free agents next March. The 49ers need a speed receiver to complement Michael Crabtree.

Pick change; previously Donte Moncrief, WR
