2014 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2

Last update: Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013. Some changes in both rounds.
Next update: Next week. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.

The order of this 2014 NFL Mock Draft is based on my NFL Power Rankings.

*** THIS IS A LIVE 2014 NFL MOCK DRAFT. PICKS ARE BEING POSTED NOW. TO SEE PREVIOUS VERSIONS, CHECK OUT THE ARCHIVED 2013 NFL MOCK DRAFT SECTION. FOLLOW @walterfootball FOR UPDATES ***

  1. Oakland Raiders: Brandon Coleman, WR, Rutgers
The Raiders’ current starting wideouts are Denarius Moore and Rod Streater. Neither is a No. 1 receiver, so Oakland needs to find one for its new quarterback.

    Follow @walterfootball for updates.

  2. Jacksonville Jaguars: Bryan Stork, C, Florida State
It was surprising to see the Jaguars ignore the interior of their offensive line in the 2013 NFL Draft. Center Brad Meester, who just turned 36, isn’t nearly the player he once was.

  3. Buffalo Bills: Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State
The Bills were expected to address the cornerback position in the 2013 NFL Draft, but never got around to it. They probably won’t avoid that area two years in a row.

  4. Cleveland Browns: Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M
Johnny Manziel would be a sure-fire first-rounder if it wasn’t for his off-the-field antics and arrogant personality. He may still go in the first, but I feel more comfortable dropping him to this spot.

Michael Lombardi won’t care too much about Manziel’s personality flaws. Remember, Lombardi was head over heels for Ryan Mallett despite his off-the-field issues. Factor in that Johnny Football fits perfectly into Cleveland’s offense, and this match just makes too much sense.

  5. New York Jets: Jordan Matthews, WR, Vanderbilt
Santonio Holmes won’t be on the team much longer, so even if Stephen Hill develops, the Jets will need another starting receiver.

  6. Arizona Cardinals: Stephen Morris, QB, Miami
If the Cardinals are drafting sixth overall, it means that the Carson Palmer experiment didn’t go too well. In that case, they’d consider a quarterback in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Stephen Morris would fit perfectly in Arizona’s offense.

  7. Philadelphia Eagles: Trent Murphy, DE/OLB, Stanford
There’s doubt that Brandon Graham and Trent Cole can fit into the Eagles’ new defense. If that turns out to be the case, Philadelphia will be searching for a pass-rusher across from Connor Barwin.

  8. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Stephon Tuitt, DE/DT, Notre Dame
The Buccaneers have issues all over on defense, one of which is at the end position because they couldn’t re-sign Michael Bennett.

  9. Detroit Lions: Ryan Shazier, OLB, Ohio State
Detroit has a pretty underwhelming linebacking corps. Stephen Tulloch hasn’t been as good as advertised, while Ashlee Palmer should not be a starter in the NFL.

Pick change; previously Christian Jones, LB

  10. San Diego Chargers: Adrian Hubbard, DE/OLB, Alabama
The Chargers were so desperate for help at rush linebacker that they signed Dwight Freeney. The former Colt is obviously not a long-term solution for the team’s pass-rushing woes.

Pick change; previously Khalil Mack, DE/OLB

  11. Tennessee Titans: David Fales, QB, San Jose State
If the Titans are drafting 11th overall, it means that Jake Locker struggled yet again. It’s also likely that the entire front office was fired, and new regimes mean new quarterbacks.

David Fales will go in the first round with another strong season. His decision-making, accuracy and field vision are terrific. He doesn’t have the strongest arm, but it’s good enough.

Pick change; previously Chaz Green, OT

  12. St. Louis Rams: Craig Loston, S, LSU
The Rams just drafted T.J. McDonald, but they’ll have to find another safety upgrade sometime soon.

  13. Dallas Cowboys: Timmy Jernigan, DT, Florida State
I have no idea what the Cowboys were thinking when they passed on Sharrif Floyd at No. 18 overall. Moving down and then selecting a third-round center made it clearer than ever that they need a real general manager. In the meantime, Jerry Jones will continue to run the team into the ground.

Perhaps Jones will suddenly realize that Dallas has a glaring need on the interior of its defensive front. Timmy Jernigan would be a nice fit as Monte Kiffin’s three-technique – just as Floyd would have been.

  14. Kansas City Chiefs: Henry Anderson, DE/DT, Stanford
The Chiefs decided to keep Tyson Jackson for one more season, but it’s unlikely that he’ll be back in 2014. With that in mind, they’ll be looking for a new defensive end next offseason.

  15. Minnesota Vikings: Cyril Richardson, G/OT, Baylor
The Vikings had to address the interior of their offensive line in the 2013 NFL Draft. They did so – but only in the sixth and seventh rounds.

  16. Miami Dolphins: Ty Zimmerman, S, Kansas State
Chris Clemons will be hitting the market in March, so the Dolphins will need help at safety if he leaves.

  17. Carolina Panthers: Quandre Diggs, CB, Texas
The Panthers went back-to-back defensive tackles this past April, so they could definitely do the same thing at the cornerback position considering the circumstances.

  18. Washington Redskins: Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State
DeAngelo Hall won’t be around much longer, so the Redskins will be in need of another cornerback sometime soon.

  19. Chicago Bears: Derek Carr, QB, Fresno State
The Bears will almost certainly re-sign Jay Cutler, but it wouldn’t hurt for them to grab a potential successor in this loaded draft class.

  20. Pittsburgh Steelers: Eric Ebron, TE, North Carolina
Heath Miller suffered a brutal knee injury. He’s entering his contract season after the 2014 NFL Draft, so the Steelers may look into finding a new tight end.

  21. Atlanta Falcons: Will Sutton, DE/DT, Arizona State
The Falcons didn’t address defensive tackle even though they have a hole there next to Jonathan Babineaux. Peria Jerry will be given one more chance to prove himself.

Will Sutton can line up both inside and outside to create tons of pressure on the quarterback. He’ll be useful to have against Drew Brees and Cam Newton.

  22. New York Giants: Cameron Erving, OT, Florida State
I have no idea what the Giants are thinking by continuing to start David Diehl at right tackle. He made Erik Walden look good in a preseason game, for crying out loud.

Pick change; previously Chaz Green, OT

  23. Baltimore Ravens: Colt Lyerla, TE, Oregon
Dennis Pitta just suffered a brutal hip injury that could downgrade his effectiveness in the 2014 season. Ed Dickson, meanwhile, is an impending free agent.

  24. Cincinnati Bengals: Travis Swanson, C, Arkansas
The Bengals don’t have much at center, with Trevor Robinson and Kyle Cook set to battle for the job this year.

  25. Indianapolis Colts: Jeoffrey Pagan, DE/DT, Alabama
I mocked Datone Jones to the Colts for a while because they need a pass-rushing presence up front. That’s still a hole they have to fill.

  26. Houston Texans: Bryn Renner, QB, North Carolina
Matt Schaub needs to prove that he can take the Texans deep into the playoffs. If he fails again, the front office may begin looking elsewhere. T.J. Yates is still there, but I’m not sure he’s viewed as the long-term solution.

  27. New Orleans Saints: Deandre Coleman, DE/DT, California
I mocked Sheldon Richardson to the Saints a couple of times because they happen to be thin at defensive end in their new 3-4. That’s still the case.

  28. San Francisco 49ers: Josh Huff, WR, Oregon
Anquan Boldin and Mario Manningham will both be free agents next March. The 49ers need a speed receiver to complement Michael Crabtree.

  29. Green Bay Packers: Morgan Breslin, DE/OLB, USC
Khalil Mack will add depth to a thin 3-4 outside linebacker group and challenge Nick Perry for a starting job if the USC product disappoints in 2013.

  30. New England Patriots: Daniel McCullers, NT, Tennessee
The Patriots surprisingly avoided the defensive tackle position in the 2013 NFL Draft, so perhaps they’ll double up next spring. They’ll find help there once Tommy Kelly inevitably fails, though this is more of a long-term replacement for Vince Wilfork.

  31. Denver Broncos: Andrew Jackson, ILB, Western Kentucky
The Broncos have such an epically bad situation at inside linebacker that they’ll almost be forced to address the position via free agency or the first couple rounds of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Pick change; previously David Yankey, G/OT

  32. Seattle Seahawks: Odell Beckham, WR, LSU
The Seahawks might be looking for a receiver early in the 2014 NFL Draft despite trading for Percy Harvin. Sidney Rice may not be around much longer.
